Connecting with your community Been feeling a bit bored with life? Is your New Year’s resolution to get involved with a charitable organisation? Volunteering is the answer and can be one of the most rewarding things you can do.
Benefits of volunteering Gain confidence. Volunteering can help you gain confidence by giving you the chance to try something new and build a real sense of achievement. Make a difference. Volunteering can have a real and valuable positive affect on people, communities and society in general. Meet people. Volunteering can help you meet different kinds of people and make new friends. Be part of a community. Volunteering can help you feel part of something outside your friends and family. Learn new skills. Volunteering can help you learn new skills, gain experience and sometimes even qualifications. Take on a challenge. Through volunteering you can challenge yourself to try something different, achieve personal goals, practice using your skills and discover hidden talents. Have fun! Most volunteers have a great time, regardless of why they do it. We’ve listed a few of the organsations in East London who needs help, and some have listed their specific needs. We will feature different charitable organisations and NGOs throughout the year. (Pages 13, 14, 15) Christelik-Maatskaplike raad Christian soCial serviCes onontlalontle

how to take proper care of your leather bag or briefcase
T
he durability and timeless style of a quality leather bag or briefcase is undeniable. To maintain your leather properly, keep in mind that leather was once a living hide and should be treated as such. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe away any dust and dirt before treating the leather with a natural balm lotion that is free of chemicals, oils, or waxes. This will help maintain and preserve the leather’s soft grain and pliable body.
Travel Gear
Remove water or excess moisture from leather quickly. Whenever rain or excess moisture gets on your leather item, use a dry cloth to blot, not rub, moist spots as quickly as possible. Do not place your leather bag near a heat source to dry, especially if it is a coated leather. Also, never put a briefcase, tote, or handbag on wet ground. Fully air-dry rain-soaked leather. Lay the bag on the floor or a table so that it is flat – this will avoid drooping, slouching, or wrinkling. If you’re drying a briefcase, tote, or handbag, it is best to stuff it with dry cloth to help it maintain its shape and draw out moisture from inside of the bag. Wipe the inside of your leather bag or briefcase at least once a month.

The Permanent Collection will be on view in January. A little history: The house was built in 1905 for Arthur Savage, and was bought two years later by a local businessman, Edmund Bryant. He died in 1928 and in 1946 his widow, Ann, left the house, then called “The Gables” in trust to the city on condition that it be used as an art gallery. She also left the city her collection of about 60 works, which formed the core of the collection. Since then the collection has grown substantially and it is a huge treat to visit the gallery and view the art on display. “Photography is my passion I crave the connection with Nature, the atmosphere, the experience and unique moments.” – Tony Baxter. Tony’s love for landscape photography is evident in the quality of work he has produced for this exhibition. An introvert by nature, Tony has an amazing talent for exposing the emotional connection he feels for the healing power of being at one with the landscape. This connection can be observed in his atmospheric photographs which are on display. Mon to Fri. 8.30am to 5pm. Sat. 9.30am to 1pm.

JANUARY IN THE GARDEN For generations, philodendrons have been a ‘tried & trusted’ option in interior gardens. Philodendrons are widely used by interior plantscapers – they are lush looking and popular primarily because they are extremely easy to care for, even inexperienced houseplant owners will have no trouble growing philodendron plants because they adapt readily to the conditions inside the home. Philodendron houseplants thrive indoors year round without complaint. Basic Philodendron needs: sunlight, water and fertiliser. Sunlight – Set the plant in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Find a position near a window where the sun’s rays never actually touch the foliage. While it’s normal for older leaves to yellow, if this happens to several leaves at the same time, the plant may be getting too much light. On the other hand, if the stems are long and leggy with several inches between leaves, the plant probably isn’t getting enough light. Water – When growing philodendron plants, allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. The length of your index finger to the first knuckle is about an inch, so inserting your finger into the soil is a good way to check the moisture level. Droopy leaves can mean that the plant is getting too much or not enough water. But the leaves recover quickly when you correct the watering schedule. Fertilising – Feed philodendron houseplants monthly with a balanced plant food that contains macro-nutrients. Source: The Life is a Garden
