East London
ADVERTORIAL
String Quartet Adding that elegant touch to your wedding, function, or special event.
P
lanning your perfect wedding is a lot of fun and it's so exciting putting together all those little details that will make your day extra special. Have you ever considered how magical it would be to have a live string quartet play as you walk down the aisle, or perhaps out on the lawns as your guests enjoy their predinner drinks? Or imagine what an elegant touch it would add to your reception to have a string quartet playing background music as your guests dine. If you're wondering how you could make this happen, you're in luck - East London has its own string quartet that can make your wedding dreams come true! 16Strings String Quartet - comprising of Jonathan Buitendag (violin), Una Driver-Boon (violin), Jacques du Plessis (viola) and Rosemary Robertson (cello) - is based in East London and is the only string quartet in the area. They're all professional and experienced musicians and pride themselves on adding that unique, elegant, and tasteful touch to weddings or other special functions or events. They play a relaxed and enjoyable mix of light classical and more contemporary pieces, including any special requests by the bridal couple. Their repertoire ranges from ‘Chasing Cars’ (Snow Patrol) and ‘A Thousand Years’ (Christina Perri) to Andrew Lloyd Weber classics and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. For further information or to request a quote, please contact Una on 079 727 7774 or see their Facebook page (16Strings String Quartet) for more details.

Ultimate Frisbee is flying high So you have seen some people at Hams Club throwing a frisbee around? They look pretty serious, but is it a real sport?
U
ltimate Frisbee is most definitely a “real sport” and in 2015 the International Olympic Committee officially recognised the sport. Ultimate, as it is called, is played in over 90 countries and South Africa has a strong history in the game, currently ranked 32. What is Ultimate? Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands the world over. It mixes the best features of sports such as Soccer, Basketball, American Football and Netball into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game. It is a fast-paced game, demanding its players to develop razor sharp throwing skills and immense stamina and agility. The Game Ultimate is played between two teams of seven players on a large rectangular pitch. A line drawn across the pitch at either end
creates two “endzones” (like in American Football). These are the goal-scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing (or more likely running) in the endzone they are attacking. Players cannot run with the disc. When you get the disc you must come to a stop and try to throw it to another player (a bit like netball). By passing from player to player, the offence attempts to work the disc up the pitch towards the endzone they are attacking. If the disc hits the ground or is intercepted or knocked down by the other team, then the opposition takes possession. Possession also changes if a receiver is outside the playing area when he or she catches it. Fouls and “Spirit of the Game” Ultimate is essentially non-contact; any contact between players can be declared a foul. There’s a variety of other minor violations, but that’s the big one.
Ultimate is unique in that it is refereed by the players themselves, even at World Championship level, according to a code of conduct known as “the Spirit of the Game”. This places the responsibility for fair play
Does it sound like it’s for you, even slightly? Here’s how you can join in the fun. Mondays at Hams Club. Open to everybody interested in the sport, men as well as ladies. 5:30pm - 7pm. Wednesdays at Hams Club. Separate training session for men and ladies for half the session. Social game after the training. 5:30pm - 7pm. Contact Jason: 083 651 3987 Nicole: 073 775 6089
COMING UP 21-22 July 2018.
Mixed Regionals 2018 Hams Club, Clevedon Rd, Selborne. Saturday: 10.30am - 6.30pm. Sunday: 8am - 1.30pm
on the players themselves. In that respect, playing Ultimate is a completely different experience to playing other sports. And believe it or not, Ultimate’s system of self-refereeing works. Beautifully.

T
he pre-war races in East London from 1934 – 1939 were of major historical significance as they brought international Grand Prix racing to a little-known frontier city. Within this era of racing, the 1937 Grand Prix in East London was especially legendary because it attracted the cream of Nazi-supported German motor racing less than two years before WW2 would break out.

The German Auto Union was an amalgamation of four vehicle manufacturers (Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer) founded in 1932 and still alive today in the form of Audi. Reich Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, backed both Mercedes and the Auto Union because
his master plan included not only a people’s car, but the ascendancy of the German auto industry and an allpowerful state-sponsored racing programme.
Prior to their appearance in South Africa, the monstrously powerful Auto Union racing cars designed by Ferdinand Porsche and branded with Nazi swastikas, were already familiar on international tracks. There were a rash of fascinating and romantic twists to the tale of how the Auto Union were attracted to the small and remote city of East London (read the book!) The Auto Union shocked the South African racing world with its power and efficiency. Ace driver Bernd Rosemeyer

arrived in East London on a Messerschmitt aircraft flown from Berlin by his new bride and celebrated pilot, Elly Beinhorn. He was accompanied by team mate Ernst von Delius. The cars were offloaded at the East London Harbour with all their own spare parts and a small army of support technicians. The machines that found their way to the East London circuit in 1937 were the Type C design with a massive 6-litre V16-cylinder supercharged engine that produced 520 horsepower at 5 000 revs.
The cigar-shaped cars with their huge wheels were a spectacle – the over-powered engines stripped the synthetic rubber Continental tyres to the canvas in just 12 laps. There were red faces among local tyre experts when the locally sourced alternatives lasted for just four laps. The practise laps of the German drivers were so fast that their handicap dictated that they start nearly an hour after the slowest racer.
On the straight, both Germans were notching 180 miles per hour on a track they had initially described as “too narrow and bumpy”. Rosemeyer managed fifth place despite the bizarre handicap and a tyre burst that saw the German driver getting it seriously sideways at 135mph in a heart-stopping 50 metre slide. The best local performance was a second place by East London’s Buller Meyer driving a Riley Ulster. The Auto Unions signalled more than Nazi sponsored technical dominance – they were the last in the line of race cars that succeeded through brute, barely controllable power. Both Rosemeyer and his team mate Von Delius, would die behind the wheel within a year of the East London Grand Prix. Rosemeyer while pursuing a speed records at on the Frankfurt Autobahn and Von Delius in a collision with Dick Seaman in the 1938 German Grand Prix.1
