WHAT’S the difference between a “twitcher” and a “bird as you go” bird watcher? Nothing much, just a difference in the lengths you’ll go to spot a bird in the bush, the forest or in the urban landscape. And both are types of bird watchers, with birding having been suggested as the fastest growing hobby in the world.
“This is a hobby that can be enjoyed at many different levels and by anyone of any age,” Johan Smulders of the Border Bird Club explains. “You can be a “Twitcher” who travels far and wide to find another rare bird to add to your life list or you can just

“bird as you go” about your usual activities.”
All you need is a pair of binoculars, a good field guide and a willingness to be still and patient. Birds may be beautiful, but they are generally small and can be hard to spot. They are beautiful creatures rich in variety, from a tiny Sunbird feeding in a Wild Dagga flower to a Crowned Eagle searching for its prey in the forest canopy. According to Smulders, in South Africa we have over 900 species of bird and the list for the Eastern Cape is about 400. “When you see for the first
time an African Oystercatcher feeding on the rocks at Nahoon Point Nature Reserve you will be amazed to see the bright colours of its beak and eyes. As you get a fleeting glance of a Knysna Turaco as it flies across an opening in the coastal bush you will catch your breath at its beauty,” Smulders said. Bird watching also connects you with nature and so with your world. “In the rush and bustle of today it is sometimes good to take a step back and simply enjoy the beauty of nature. A few minutes in your back yard, a quiet walk along a river or coastal forest listening to the different calls and admiring a Cape Robin Chat feeding in the undergrowth
of a Little Egret fishing in a rock pool will calm a restless spirit and bring a smile to your face and soul.” It is worth saving for a good pair of binoculars and a South African Bird Handbook as this will bring a new dimension to your world. “Soon you will become interested in the difference between a Knysna Woodpecker and an Olive one. Is the beautiful small blue and white bird a Pygmy or a Malachite Kingfisher?,” Smulder said. “In the larger picture it may not make a great difference in your life but there is a satisfaction in knowing more about nature and your world.”
The Border Bird Club at the Nahoon Estuary Nature Reserve will host a Bird Identification Course on Saturday 19 July from 12pm to 2pm. Enquire about the ever popular seal show to catch the playful seals in action, or take some time to spot a whale or two off the mini pier. Action bowling, arcade games, formula dodgems and more in a vibrant, exciting environment will stifle any “I’m bored” wails. After a few hours of strenuous fun, grab a bite to eat at the nearby café, or brows the stores, ranging from Outdoor Warehouse to High Fi Corporation. Reserve or pet the animals at Mel’s Fun Farm or Burnside Touch Farm. The Lion Park has 4 new cubs ... be sure to visit them. • Or drive out towards the East Coast Resorts and follow the Jikeleza Route. Here you can make a day of stopping in at craft stalls, visiting Inkwenkwezi Game Farm or dipping your toes in the ocean at any one of the seaside resorts, from Glen Muir to Glen Eden, Chintsa and beyond. • Further afield, the Grahamstown Festival in the City of Saints is a fabulous day out or overnight adventure. It’s the biggest celebration of the Arts on the African continent. Whether its arts and crafts you’re looking for at the massive Village Green, or if you’re keen for a bit of culture, the festival has something for everyone. It’s definitely worth consulting the programme online before heading out to catch a few shows, from kid-friendly shows to highbrow ballet, contemporary dance or adult comedy. East London is famous for its beautiful beaches. Winter days can be warm and there’s little chance of rain, so when the sky clears and the temperatures lift, head to the beaches. From Kaysers Beach to Gonubie, with everything in between and beyond, packing a picnic, an umbrella and some sunblock can make for a fantastic day out near the ocean.
