3 June: Human, a 2015 documentary by French environmentalist Yann ArthusBertrand, presented by the Alliance Française d’East London at the Nahoon Mouth Bowling Club from 6.30pm. HUMAN is a collection of stories and images of our world, offering an immersion to the core of what it means to be human. Through these stories full of love and happiness, as well as hatred and violence, HUMAN brings us face to face with the Other, making us reflect on our lives. From stories of everyday experiences to accounts of the most unbelievable lives, these poignant encounters share a rare sincerity and underline who we are – our darker side, but also what is most noble in us, and what is universal. Our Earth is shown at its most sublime through never-before-seen aerial images accompanied by soaring music, resulting in an ode to the beauty of the world, providing a moment to draw breath and for introspection. HUMAN is a politically engaged work which allows us to embrace the human condition and to reflect on the meaning of our existence. Contact: Aline 072 196 4445. THE sea will turn silver soon, teeming with sardines making their annual pilgrimage up the coast. Every year, usually between May and July, the greatest migration on Earth takes place, and it happens right on our doorstep! Billions of sardines travel northwards into the sub-tropical seas of South Africa’s wild coast. The sardines migrate along the cooler inshore waters to avoid the strong and warm offshore Agulhas Current, which flows in the opposite direction to the migration. Sardine prefer water temperatures between 14°C -20°C. The sardine run is always accompanied by predators searching for their share of the shoals. Dolphins, game fish, sharks, gannets, cormorants and other birds herd the little silver fish into
catchable baitballs, where a feeding frenzy takes place. The “greatest shoal on earth” is a marine wildlife spectacle - a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be part of and something that many consider the mostintense and spectacular marine wildlife event in the world. It would be amiss to live in East London or elsewhere on our coast and not take a boat out to see the action first hand. Those brave enough to venture into the water can even take a snorkel and swim among the sardines. Apparently the sharks are too busy scoffing sardines to be bothered with voyeuristic humans but, please note, this activity is entirely at your own risk!
GO LOCAL Southern Cross Harbour and River Cruises offer an affordable way to get out into the heart of the sardine run as it happens on our doorstep. Chat to owner and skipper John Barry about the options he offers for optimum sardine run watching. Barry is based at Latimer’s Landing and can be reached on 082 938 6275.
