K

erry Hiles is a professional entertainer who has dabbled in acting for stage and screen. While you may recognise her voice from radio adverts and documentaries, it is as a singer and bass player that she is most well known. What you probably don’t know is that Kerry has a secret day job … one that started, almost by accident, in 2010 … that of a cheese maker! Fast forward to the present, and her Pickme range of ricotta, paneer, quark and haloumi cheese (in five different flavours) has become popular not only among East London delis and private clients, but also as far afield as Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. However, as with all good relationships (even those with cheese) there comes a time for change … a bit of excitement, a little fling … In Kerry’s case it came in the form of an opportunity to purchase a small yogurt business. This proverbial seven year itch needed to be scratched and Kerry jumped at the chance. Maintaining her ideal to provide affordable, quality home-grown goods and also cater to the health-

conscious market, Kerry uses non-animal rennet in her cheese, avoids preservatives in the cheese, uses no salt except in the haloumi (traditionally a salty cheese), and generally attempts to make the cheese as naturally good for a person as possible, focussing on vegetarianfriendly products. Her yogurt is gelatine-free (again, vegetarian-friendly), stabiliser-free and low in sugar. By careful selection of yogurt cultures, the 1kg fat-free yogurt has a creamy, smooth finish. The need for a longer shelf life, required by the restaurants and hotels, necessitates the use of potassium sorbate as a preservative in her fat-free yogurt. The 350ml full-cream drinking yogurt, however, is preservativefree. Initially created to cater for scholars as a healthy lunchbox treat, early market testing revealed that it was the parents, rather than their offspring, who most enjoyed the fresh, not-toosweet

drinking yogurt. It has now become a firm favourite among the moms! Fruit pulp, rather than syrup, is used to flavour the yogurt, and this adds to the overall natural taste. Milk is sourced from local professional dairies and then pasteurised before or during the cheese- and yogurt-making processes. Pickme cheese and yogurt is available to private customers and delivered to most areas in East London on a Thursday. If you can't wait that long for your next bite of haloumi or sip of yogurt, get along to various outlets around the city to buy your own. A comprehensive range of Pickme products is stocked at Lime Fusion, 3 Frere Rd, Vincent and Fusion Speciality Foods in Grahamstown. A limited range is available at Lavender Blue, Cinnamon Stick, Spargs and Irana. Alternatively, taste it on the menus at Umnenga Lodge, Haga Haga Hotel, Lavender Blue and Cafe Bella.

For more details, look up "Pickme Cheese and Yogurt" on Facebook, or email info@pickme-farm.co.za.

Traditional Bobotie Ingredients • 1 fairly thick slice crustless bread (white or brown) • 375 ml milk • 25 ml oil • 10ml butter • 2 onions, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 25 ml curry powder • 10ml salt • 25ml chutney • 15ml smooth apricot jam • 15ml Worcester sauce • 5ml turmeric • 25ml brown vinegar • 1 kg raw mince • 100 ml sultanas (don’t replace with raisins - they are too sweet) • 3 eggs • pinch each salt and turmeric • bay leaves Cooking method 1. Soak bread in milk. Heat oil and butter in large pan and fry onions and garlic. 2. When onions are soft, add curry powder, salt, chutney, jam, 42

Worcester sauce, turmeric and vinegar and mix well. 3. Drain and mash bread and reserve milk. Add bread to pan together with mince and sultanas. 4. Cook over low heat, stirring, and when meat loses its pinkness, remove from stove. Add 1 beaten egg, mix well, then spoon into a greased, 28 x 16 cm baking dish and level the top. Beat remaining eggs with reserved milk (you should have 300ml, or a little more) and the salt and turmeric. 5. Pour over meat mixture and put a few bay leaves on top. Stand dish in a larger pan of water (this is important to prevent drying out) and bake, uncovered, at 180 degrees celsius for 1 hour or until set. Serve with rice, coconut, chutney, nuts and bananas. - www.getaway.co.za

Below is the 4th extract from the book on East London Grand Prix history provisionally titled Off the Circuit: A South African Town Makes Grand Prix History currently being written by Glenn Hollands and scheduled to be released in time for the historic GP Festival in November

The story of Erroll Kobus and the East London – Port Elizabeth dash

T

By Glenn Hollands

he heady days of the 1960s Grand prix races in East London had been a source of great pride to the city. Famous names like Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark and Jack Brabham has returned to the city time and again to wow the locals and the tens of thousands of fans that had flocked to the city in chartered trains, special flights and their

own cars. By 1966 however, things were beginning to wind-down. The loss of FIA status in 1966 and the switch of the official South African Grand Prix to Johannesburg’s Kyalami was a bitter blow for the local organisers and the East London populace. But racing culture had become deeply ingrained in the city and the local racers including Erroll Kobus, who

raced his own Mercedes Benz cars in the production class, were deeply respected for their commitment to the sport. Kobus however, was to achieve his most notable moment of fame from an unlikely event.

The Tukutese family made world headlines in 1966 when the Nogesi Tukutese gave birth to quintuplets – the first woman in South Africa medical history to do so. The pictures of this momentous event were held by the Daily Dispatch and needed to be transmitted to the media world at large but the closest facility that could do this was in Port Elizabeth – some 300km away. The solution decided the Eastern

Province Herald was to have the pictures physically delivered in a high-speed road trip. The man for the job was racing driver Erroll Kobus. Kobus was the owner of a Berea garage that sold BMWs but was renowned for the large Black 220 SE Merc that he raced successfully on the GP track in the Saloon Car class. For the overnight road trip the Merc was to prove the ideal choice. Departing from the Daily Dispatch offices at 10 pm that night, the pictures were delivered to Market Square in Port Elizabeth by 12.30 am and Kobus was home by 3.10 am. He opened his garage at the normal time that morning.
