New look

for Jumbo Beach 2 Beach run/walk

The Jumbo Beach 2 Beach has taken on a spanking new identity and will be run on Sunday 16 March under the banner of the all new “running movement” called Born 2 Run, which emanates itself, out of the hugely successful parkruns that happen weekly at Sunrise-onSea, Kidds Beach and Nahoon point Nature Reserve. Buffalo City Metro Athletics will oversee the championship aspect. The Beach 2 Beach will consist of a flagship Half Marathon with great prize money e.g. R15 000 to the winner of both the men’s and women’s races. There is also R100, 000 on offer for a new South African Record. A 5km family event will also be run. The route constitutes two similar laps through the EL Harbour, Esplanade and it includes the historical pier. The half marathon is billed as probably the fastest in Africa, an assertion based on the fact that world records were recorded by Mathews Temane in 1987 and Elana Meyer in 1991 in East London. Not only will it be an extremely fast route it will be as beautiful a route as is to be found anywhere, a fact that too many East Londoners do not always acknowledge.

Once established it is certaintain that the event will grow into one of both national and continental stature and thereafter international recognition. The parkrun phenomenon is delivery thousands of potential new runners into organised road and trail running and as they progress they will seek specialised races. The Beach 2 Beach is therefore an ideal introduction as it will attract a spectator following and be manageable to novices. Lusapho April who hails from Uitenhage is retained by Jumbo as an ambassador to the race and is expected therefore to race it, while East London’s own Queen of the roads, Hanlie Botha, is Born 2 Run’s star performer and a driving force behind the movement. She is also ambassador to the Discovery Surfers Challenge which took place last month. The race is developmental in nature and it is an opportunity to showcase talent, the likes of Luthando Hejana who has shown fantastic resolve in his racing this year. Entries are available online and at Jumbo Head Office. Registration for all runners will be at Nahoon Laerskool from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 15th March.

Venue: GUILD THEATRE Date: 3rd and 4th APRIL 2014 TIME: 7.30pm Tickets can be purchased at the Guild Theatre, East London 043 - 743 0704 or at Computicket

Fifteen cardboard boxes on stage. Each filled with characters and stories. And Pieter-Dirk Uys. That`s all the visual required to make turn his latest show into an evening to be talked about long after the fact. Now in his late sixties, Pieter-Dirk Uys can vividly recall the recent history of South Africa with ease and is probably the most up to date person on current South African politics. He engages his audiences, speaking to the young, the expat, the gay and the gatvol. "An Audience with Pieter-Dirk Eish" is just that. With the choice of fifteen boxes on stage, a member of the audience

chooses a number. Out come characters and entertainment that could be either a drama, a comedy, a farce or a shocking expose. Every box holds a familiar laugh, all truly South African! Uys is on stage sharing a life that reflects the lives of so many of his audiences, memorable experiences growing up in South Africa then and now, and doing sketches of various characters and their unique stories, some of them harking back to that dark past; most of them trying to make sense of this crazy future. Only every night the show and the characters will be different. Come and enjoy the show!!

Daily disciplines for Lent (5TH March - 19TH April)

Lent is derived from the Anglo Saxon word lenctem, meaning spring. Lent is the 40 days (excluding Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Traditionally it has been a time of fasting commemorative of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness following his baptism. Lent also recalls the 40 days that Elijah and Moses both spent with God, as well as the 40 years that Israel spent wandering in the desert. Lent prepares the way for the greatest observance of the year, the death and resurrection of Jesus. Lent is a good time self-reflection, a time to re-examine our lives and get realigned in our relationship with God and the world around us. This year I would like to suggest that the path we travel is that of simplicity. Simplicity, contrary to the suggestion

of its name, is not a particularly simple or easy way. Life is very complex and the walk of simplicity is complicated and demanding, but the rewards are many. Simplicity is a spiritual discipline that re-orients our lives by deliberately organizing it for a purpose. It is spiritual because simplicity deals intimately with the beliefs and views that lend shape and order to our lives. Simplicity is a discipline because we have to work at it and practice it in order to apply it in our lives. Each of our paths will be unique to our situation. Simplicity touches every area of our lives as we open more of ourselves to God and the central value that directs our lives. May these 40 days of Lent be a time of refreshing and renewal as we practice these daily disciplines. (With acknowledgement to Ann Hagmann)

Tea And Cake

Anyone?

A breath of fresh air has blown into East London in the form of new Hemingways General Manager Madeleine Roux who took up her position at the hotel in February this year. Having arrived here via Monte Casino Palazzo in Johannesburg, where she worked as deputy GM for a number of years, followed by a short stint at Sandton Garden Court as general manager, Madeleine has marvellous plans for Hemingways that involves East Londoners – not just those visiting from out of town looking for somewhere fabulous to stay. From romantic getaways to “popthe-question” dinners and even high teas, Madeleine plans to have East Londoners think Hemingways first when choosing a venue for their weekend escapes, engagements to significant others, special occasion dinners or even kiddies’ tea parties. Hemingways Hotel has just undergone a revamp – another 30 rooms were added to the 108 luxurious rooms with en-suite bathrooms on offer. There are also three executive rooms, seven suites and a presidential suite, which has a lounge area looking towards Nahoon and the Indian Ocean. Madeleine has two immediate goals “to add finesse to the hotel property and try and integrate it better with the local townsfolk”. “Local people are our biggest asset and marketing tool – if they don’t support us why would tourists?” she said, adding that “if they don’t know our product how can they support it”. To ensure locals become very familiar with the hotel, Madeleine plans on doing plenty of promotions in the forthcoming months to bring them out 42

in their numbers. “Hemingways is not just about the casino and the shopping, it’s an entertainment destination – where else in South Africa do you go to movies for R25? The buffets at our Key Largo restaurant, which also offers the high teas, are incredibly reasonable,” she says. “We will be pushing the romantic packages – where couples will be encouraged to attend a show and stay at the hotel for the night. Working at Monte Casino we saw that 80% of our hotel guests over weekends lived just 5km away,” she said. “Already we have introduced high teas on Wednesday’s – from 2.30pm to 5pm. Delicious savoury snacks and of course a stunning array of bakes are individually placed on a three-tier cake stand which serves “tea for two”. We hope, as this takes off, to offer these for kitchen teas and baby showers. Even kiddies’ birthday parties,” she said. Madeleine brings her formidable energy to the existing Hemingways team – injecting new ideas to add value to an already successful product. Having spent the first part of her career working in Indian Ocean hotels from Durban to the Comores, Seychelles and Bazaruto Island, and then the last nine years inland, Madeleine is relishing being back at the coast and life in the slower lane. “I love that I seem to have more time in the day because I’m not spending it all in my car fighting traffic! And my dogs are loving the beach walks,” she says.
