ouple the Gonubie Hotel’s landmark seaside site with value for money, throw in some old-world charm, delicious food and ice-cold beer and it is no wonder it's such a lovable landmark. Built in 1925 by the wellknown Schwedhelm family, the rambling hotel welcomes laidback visitors with sand between their toes as well as the sleek corporate set, who choose to conference in the hotel’s hi-tech facilities and then stretch their legs on the beach, just a stone’s throw from the establishment. Wedding parties also descend on the Gonubie Hotel to say their “I dos” and capture the romance of the day at the photogenic coastal surrounds. Duncan Cameron, Nicholas Williams & Laura Risk in Concert at Rosemount Hall (41 Rosemount Av) from 8pm. Duncan Cameron creates fresh and detailed folk music. His compositions and adaptations of old songs in both French and English reveal the depth and contrast of emotions in lyrics as well as instrumental music. To that end, his arrangements and compositions draw not only from Celtic roots but also classical music, funk, and other popular styles. Laura Risk and Nicholas Williams have been consistently praised for their subtle musicianship, their synergy, and their dynamic approach to traditional Scottish and Québécois music. Their duo concert features traditional songs and tunes, as well as original compositions, played on the fiddle, blackwood flute, accordion, and piano. 31 March. WHAT’S ON MOTORING

ALL NEW NIMBLE 2019 SUZUKI JIMNY

T

he motoring scene has recently been flooded with SUV type vehicles which boast a higher than normal ground clearance, allowing the driver and passengers an elevated all-round view. This high box on wheels has proved so popular over the years that most manufacturers now boast a SUV in their line-up, with most having the option of all-wheel drive. It has become a South African status symbol to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle in your private fleet! Suzuki has recognised the need for smaller all-wheel drive vehicles which do not cost the earth, but can traverse virtually any obstacle and still be used as a family runabout. Thus, the introduction of the Jimny a few years ago, a vehicle that was light, nimble and could go anywhere. A few years ago, Suzuki kindly invited me along to a test track in Gauteng which really opened my eyes to the fantastic capabilities of the “Jimny”. This funky little vehicle can really conquer any obstacle that threatens to impede its progress. This 4x4 runabout is the subject of this test report. Wherever we came into contact with the public we encountered exclamations like “Wow what a cute vehicle, how much does it cost?” Comments were especially from the fairer sex who apparently prefer to sit in an elevated driving position. The secret of the success of the Jimny lies in its extreme nimbleness and

Photo: Carsales.com

the short wheel base allowing it to conquer types of terrain that were previously only accessible to the extremely expensive off roaders. Being very light of body is also an added bonus. The newest Jimny includes most bells & whistles which make travelling a pleasure. The Jimny is essentially a fun vehicle which can go anywhere. The cockpit provides ample seating space although storage is a bit sparse, whilst the rear is only just adequate. Powered by an all-new 4-cylinder 1500cm3 engine it has quite scintillating performance whilst mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The gearbox has a rather low first gear ratio, presumably to assist in sticky situations and, lets admit it, gives more feeling of urge on take-off at the same time saving clutch wear, but changing gears is a breeze with the slick gear change. Suspension is very comfortable, not harsh as in most SUV type vehicles! We loved the solid feel of the Jimny on really rough roads! VERDICT: A fabulous little fun vehicle that will really be a bonus in any garage, although we would have liked to see it slightly cheaper, but then again, the Jimny is a most competent off-road vehicle that will conquer any obstacle that gets in its way. Unfortunately, as in all vehicles the price is rising fast and has increased by R100 000 since 2012. However, it is a vast improvement on previous models!
