s Hi Mom
INSIDE Family Time
elcome to the Summer Edition of the Moms Matter, and thank you for once again welcoming our publication into your home and making us a part of your family. 2016 has been another hectic year and undoubtedly you and your family are looking forward to winding down and easing into a well-deserved holiday. May we take this opportunity of wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. Regular readers will notice that this edition of the Moms Matter has a slightly different look and feel. This is largely in response to the excellent positive feedback we’ve received over the past year, which has allowed us to tweak and tailor our content even further to make your magazine as useful and informative as possible. While we are still the definitive source for information on fun family outings and child-friendly entertainment and educational options, this edition also serves up some great Christmas ad holiday reading, as well as an indispensable back-toschool section to prepare for the new academic year. As always, we trust that you will find this edition a pleasurable and informative resource which you will be able to enjoy and refer to throughout the next few months. On a personal note, it’s been huge pleasure and privilege to edit this magazine for the past two editions. Thank you for your endless support and encouragement, not only to our readers but also our loyal advertisers, without whom this publication will not be possible. Daniele Spaumer is set to take over the editorial reins in January. Our first edition of the new year will be out in March, and I wish her great success in the months and years to come. First aid for sunburn Sunburn easily results in first-degree burns, especially in young children.
Sunburn easily results in first-degree burns, especially in young children. In severe cases, secondary burns could result. While children should be kept out of the sun between 10 am and 3 pm, parents can't always keep an eye. So what should you do if your child has had too much sun?
Take action: If needed, treat the child for dehydration; soothe the burns with cool water or compresses and let the child rest in a cool room; 1% hydrocortisone cream relieves pain, and tea tree oil may soothe the burn; use paracetamol for pain; apply lotion to relieve itch from peeling; and watch for signs of heat exhaustion. t’s hard to believe, but the year is slipping away. By now, if your child is due to go into Grade R in 2017, you should have found a school and registered your kid. Apart from booking a place, there are some things you can do to make your child’s transition easier. Blankie and doll weaning The blankie, doll or stuffed tiger your child has been lugging EVERYWHERE for the past couple of years needs to go into semi-retirement. Most schools prefer that toys are not brought into class, unless for show-and-tell, so in order to avoid last-minute trauma on the first day of school, start gently weaning your child off any object which they use for comfort. This needn’t be a painful process, if you’re patient, kind and positive in your approach. Clothing, diet and naps A classroom environment will mean that there’s slightly less freedom in choices of food types, eating times and clothing choices. Find out what times the school you’ve chosen has snack or meal times, what foods they don’t allow, and whether or not your child must comply with clothing rules, such as wearing shoes, for example. Then you can start to mimic the eating habits now, in preparation for the big day. Similarly, nap times may need to be adjusted.
16
Age-appropriate school readiness Kids going into Grade R don’t have to be able to perform academically- they’re going to school for that, but you can help your child to prepare by doing basic skills such as jigsaw puzzle building, cutting with safe scissors, pencil grip and posture. These needn’t be strenuous activities, as your child may not be able to concentrate for long periods, but rather just fun crafting times at home. Expressive action One of amazing things about small kids is their ability to absorb information. A great skill to start working on is showing them how to express all of the awesome fun that they’re having. When you go on a nature walk, talk about what you’re seeing, and ask them questions: What does that look like, what does that colour remind you of, how many birds are on that fence. When you get home, ask them to tell you about what they enjoyed most, or what was interesting about your trip. You may be panicking about how your little one is going to cope with the changes, but, if you find out as much as you can, and understand what your child will be going through, it will give you some peace of mind, too.

Glittering Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees Instructions 1. Cut the green popsicle sticks into 6 pieces in 1cm, 2cm, 3cm, 5cm, 6cm and 7cm lengths. 2. To cut the popsicle sticks, firmly cut into the popsicle stick on both sides of the popsicle stick a few times. Then bend it and it should cleanly snap apart where you scored it. 3. Add a generous glob of hot glue on the end of the purple popsicle stick, place both ends
of the twine on top of the glue, then sandwich the 1cm piece of green popsicle stick on top to hold the twine hanger in place. 4. Line up the remaining 5 green popsicle stick pieces evenly on the purple popsicle stick and glue them in place with hot glue. 5. Use hot glue to attach the sparkly foam sticker star. 6. Decorate your tree with the glittery rhinestones!

TOP BENEFITS OF KNOWING HOW TO SWIM (FOR KIDS) Safety The number one reason to engage in swimming lessons is it will save your child’s life. Knowing how to safely swim to the side of the pool and climb out are the most basic skills and are taught to children as young as 6 months old. Despite your best efforts, you cannot avoid water your entire life. Children can drown in bathtubs and kiddie pools just as easily as a backyard pool or lake. You could become distracted and lose track of your child, or an older family member may not have an adequate barrier around their pool that prevents your child from falling in. Give your child the tools of survival when it comes to water- do not keep them away from it hoping they will be alright. It should be noted that “swimming” with floaties, puddle jumpers, life jackets or other items like boards or pool noodles is not swimming. Swimming is actually defined as being able to propel yourself through water with your arms and legs. Do not assume that your child is any more safe using props for swimming than he is without. There is no substitute for learning proper swimming techniques. Respect For The Water Swimming lessons gives your child exposure to the power of water, and how easily it can become dangerous. A simple slip off the pool steps and a quick trip underwater will show them how scary it can be, and that they should respect the water. It’s fun to play in, but they also need to have adequate swimming skills to be trusted when it comes to being near a pool. Social Skills Swim lessons are a great way for children to be social with other swimmers. Most swim classes group children of similar skill level together, and it is sweet to
see how encouraging children can be of each other, even at the ages of 2 and 3. Better yet, swim lessons teach kids how to behave with others in the water, and not engage in activities that could cause harm or accidental drowning. Creates A Strong Bond and Builds Trust If you start young, you will probably be participating with your baby in the pool. While many lessons are a struggle at first, your child soon grows to trust you in the water, which inevitably creates a strong bond. Kids who trust you will listen to your directions about safety and heed warnings if the need arises. Higher Confidence & Better Self-Esteem Like any person who excels at a sport, a child knowing how to swim brings a higher level of confidence and better self-esteem. You will be surprised how much less fear pervades your trip to the pool or beach when your child is not fearful of the water. You can start swimming lessons as young as 6 months old and it’s been recognized that the younger a child is, the more comfort and confidence they will have in the watereven more than children who start at 4 years or older. Develop Better Coordination, Flexibility and Strength Swimming is hard work and requires a lot of coordination. It may seem simple to those who have been doing it for years, but a child learning to both kick their legs and move their arms in a way that results in actual swimming is the result of many hours spent in the pool. Kids who swim develop strength and flexibility in the water as they learn the various types of strokes and techniques of swimming. Life As Mama

We all want to feel safe. It’s so smooth and unsplintered and unlikely to scrape you or embarrass you or leave you with bruises. Sometimes, ‘safe and certain’ might be the perfect place for our kids to be, but so much growth and the things that will enrich them, will happen when they let go of the handrail, even if just for seconds at a time. Here are some ways to nurture their brave. Speak of their brave as though they’re already there. Kids and teens step up to expectations or down to them. Speak to the courage that is coming to life inside them, as though they are already there. ‘I know how brave you are.’ ‘I love that you make hard decisions sometimes, even when it would be easier to do the other thing.’ ‘You might not feel brave, but I know what it means to you to be doing this. Trust me – you are one of the bravest people I know.’ Give permission for imperfection. Failure and rejection are often a sign that you’ve done something brave. Every experience gives new information and new wisdom that wouldn’t have been there before. It’s why only the brave ones get there in the end – they have the knowledge, wisdom and experience that can often only be found when you land badly – sometimes more than once. Give them space for imperfection – it’s a growth staple. You won’t always feel ready. That’s why it’s brave. Let them know that it’s okay to hang on while they’re getting comfortable – while they’re working on a plan, fanning the brave spark inside them (and it’s always inside them), but then there will be a time to let go. When this time comes, it won’t always feel like readiness or certainty. That’s what makes it brave. And a little bit magical.
24
Try something new. Encourage them to do activities that push them to the edges of their physical or emotional selves – drama, sport, music. Anything that will help to nurture the truth to life that they are strong, powerful, that they can cope, and that they are not as fragile as they might feel sometimes will help to nurture their brave hearts. Be the example. Everything you do is gold in their eyes. Talk to them about the times you feel nervous, or the times you’ve said ‘no’ or ‘yes’, when everyone else was moving in the opposite direction. Talk to them about the times you’ve pushed through fear, exhaustion, sadness, anger, to do the thing that was right for you. Talk about your risky ideas, the times you thought differently, did differently, and the times you felt small, but did something big. Let them feel that the brave in you, is in them too. Give them space for courage of thought. Courage isn’t only about pushing against their own edges. Sometimes it’s about pushing against the friends who might steer them off track, the limiting expectations of others, the media, the majority, the world. Too many times, creative, change-making, beautifully open minds have been shut down in the name of compliance. There is nothing wrong with questioning – it opens hearts, minds and mouths – what’s important is that the questioning is done respectfully. One of the reasons the world is capable of great things, is because young minds who are brave enough to challenge the way things are and to want something better, grow into adults minds who make it happen. Ask for their opinions and let them know they can disagree with yours. Some of the world’s very ideas have often started with small ideas that made no sense at all at the time. Give space for their intuition to flourish – and teach them how to use it. Intuition is not magic and it’s not hocus pocus. It’s the lifetime of memories, experiences, and learnings that
sit somewhere in all of us, just outside of our awareness. Gut feelings and heart whispers all come from tapping into this pool of hidden wisdom. Scientists in Switzerland have found the physical basis of ‘gut feelings’. The innate fear response, or the feeling that something isn’t right, is heavily influenced by messages sent along the vagus nerve from the stomach to the brain. The vagus nerve is the longest of twelve pairs of nerves that leave the brain. It sends messages from the belly to the brain, touching the heart along the way. When the vagus nerve is cut, the loss of signals from the belly changes the production of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. (Neurotransmitters help to transmit messages between brain cells. Everything we do depends on these messages flowing properly.) The hard part – and the part that can take a lot of courage – is acting on gut feelings or intuition and doing what feels right, regardless of the noise that tells us to do otherwise. Encourage them to take notice of when something feels right or wrong for them. Sometimes this means giving them permission to let go of needing to justify or explain the reason they feel the way they do. ‘When you are still and quiet, what does your heart tell you?’‘Do you have a feeling about what you should do? Sometimes those feelings come from the part of you that knows what’s best. Taking notice of them can be really valuable.’ Encourage their sense of adventure. And let them see yours. It is in the adventure that we learn new ways of being, thinking and doing. Whether it’s taking a different turn, trying a different food, going something they’ve never been before, it’s all part of discovering their own capacity to cope with unpredictability and their own resourcefulness – and that is the fuel of the brave.
And finally … They might also believe that courage comes in the way of grand, big gestures, superheroic feats, or actions of dragon slayers. The truth is, our children are slaying their own dragons, every day. They’re heroes, every one of them. The key is helping them realise it so they can use it to push through their edges when they feel small, scared, confused, or unseen. Because one of the most important parts of being brave, is knowing that somewhere inside of you, ‘brave’ will be there when you need it, whether you feel it or not.

bowl. Add the sugar, a pinch of salt, egg yolks and margarine/butter and mix with a wooden spoon, hand mixer or cold hands quickly into a stiff dough (don’t mix for too long!). Wrap the dough in clingfilm and leave to rest and chill for 30 minutes in the fridge. Dust the work surface with a little flour and roll out the dough until it is about 5 mm thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on the baking tray. Alternatively you can just roll the
dough into balls and press them down lightly on the baking tray to make simple round cookies. Bake in the oven for 15 - 20 minutes until cooked and lightly browned. Leave the cookies to cool on the baking tray. Dust with sugar to finish (optional). These biscuits taste great as they are but you could also add chocolate chips or dried fruit and nuts for a variation.

About the book: When it’s pouring with rain, Gogo decides to pass the time by making some pancakes. But she soon discovers that the family has run out of three important ingredients: flour, eggs and milk. Without those, you can’t make pancakes. But clever Gogo has an idea. She sends Lungi and Sipho to a different neighbour to borrow what they need, and to take each of them a gift of lemons from the family’s lemon tree in return. And so, due to the kindness of the neighbours, Gogo and the eager children are finally able to make the pancakes. Author Katherine Graham tells a simple, moral story with charm and an ability to transport the young reader evocatively into the moment. The story is beautifully illustrated by Wendy Paterson.

Speed-garden. Toddlers and waiting don't mix. For fast
results, place a few pea or bean seeds and a slightly moistened cotton ball in a see-through plastic cup or sandwich bag (tape it to the window for maximum sun and easy viewing). This is the absolute easiest way to begin. You'll see sprouts within a week. Then transfer the seedlings to a garden or container.
