Medical emergencies –
are you prepared?
SUMMER holidays mean more time spent outdoors in the sun and on the beach and usually mean far more sunburns, cuts and grazes and occasionally more serious medical emergencies. While a well-stocked first aid kit will see you through minor medical mishaps, luckily we have a great medical response team in Dynamic Emergency Medical Services (Dynamic EMS) to call in the event of an emergency. Established in 2000 by Adrian Trollip who has 25 years experience in the field, Dynamic EMS employs over 80 staff and has a fleet of 29 emergency response vehicles based throughout the Eastern Cape. While Adrian is of the opinion that every South African should have completed as least one first aid course, such as those offered by Dynamic EMS at their training college, he says there are a few things one can do in certain emergency situations while you wait for paramedics to arrive: In near-drownings - make sure the victim’s airways are unobstructed. Pull them from
16
the water if safe to do so, clear their airways and lie them in the recovery position – on their left side with their right knee bent. If in cardiac arrest then start CPR until a paramedic arrives. If you suspect the victim may have injured their neck or back jumping into the water, support them gently in the water while ensuring their airways are clear. When paramedics arrive they will fit a neck brace onto the victim to ensure no further injury to their spine. In the event of a snake bite or blue bottle/jelly fish sting - sucking out the poison, or urinating on the sting is not the best route to follow despite what you may have read. Not all bites and stings are treated identically and, if you are the first on the scene and while you wait for paramedics, the best approach would be to try and identify the culprit, and ensure the victim lies quietly and is kept warm until help arrives. In every emergency, a Dynamic EMS call taker will stay on the line with you and talk you through what to do until their paramedics arrive.

n Damp io n O & e s e e h C
Being a nation who enjoys a good braai on a balmy summer’s day, we also enjoy the addition of a good starch. This damper seriously ticks all the boxes. It’s easy to prepare, can be eaten with the hands, and satisfies any bread lover’s palate with enough comforting flavour!
Ingredients 500 g self-raising flour 5 ml salt 80 ml spring onions, finely chopped with the green tops 65 ml onion flakes 150 g mature cheddar, cut into small cubes 500 ml buttermilk up to 125 ml water, if necessary Method Sift the flour and salt together in a large bowl. Add the spring onion, onion flakes and cheese and mix lightly. Add the buttermilk and mix until the dough comes together. It must be soft and pliable. If not, add a little water until the dough is the correct consistency. Fashion the dough into a ball and place in the centre of an oiled baking sheet. Score into 4 - 8 wedges using the long end of a wooden spoon, or cut the lines with a pair of scissors. Bake in an oven, preheated to 180º C for 60 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean, and the bread sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from the oven and serve immediately with butter at your next braai. Yields 1 damper. 42
