Making the Hirsch Shield their own By BRIAN McLEAN

Queen's College won the Hirsch Shield for the 12th successive year but it took a big effort following the lunch break to do so, after finding themselves in second place and three points behind Kingswood College of Grahamstown. The team rallied magnificently with the following achieving top three places: Siphendulwe Nxasana (third 110m hurdles), Jerry Danquah (third discus), Murray Swan (second javelin), Bongo Mankayi (third high jump, second triple jump, first long jump), Viwe Peter an U16 boy competing in the Hirsch Shield (first 800m), Siya Gqeba (first 400m), Sihle Lutseke (first 100m) and Temba Fuzani (first pole vault). The winning 4 x 100m relay team was Mihlali Mazwai, Kojo Owusu-Sekyere, Sihle Lutseke and Qondikhaya Giyose. Queen's were awarded the O'Hare Cup for jumps, Badock Cup for field events and the Mosenthal Cup for sprints. Final positions were third Kingswood and St Andrew's (42 points), Selborne College second on 43 points and first Queen's with 65 points. The Sammy Gunn Shield (U14) was won by Grey High and SF Edwards Shield by Selborne College. The Queen's College athletics team which won the annual Hirsch Shield for the 12 successive year. We at School Sport Extra are thrilled at the many compliments received both via email and facebook regarding our magazine. It motivates the team to keep seeking the best stories and deliver what we hope is a more than decent read. Editing errors do occur however and reference was made to the article, carried in the previous edition, on Khanya Mavovana’s unbeaten Hudson Park U14B rugby side. No reference was made to it being a B team and we regret the error. Then in the story headlined “The three who conquered Hartleyvale,’’ reference was made to the Hudson Primary trio of Anele Makongolo, Caden Baupotic and Troy Mynhardt having made the U13 SA hockey team. It’s been pointed out this is not correct and we regret the

communication error. Nevertheless, we continue to strive to be the best and thank those readers who keep us on our toes. Again we thank our advertisers, old and new, for their support and all those schools who so readily give us access to their students during school time. With exams approaching, School Sport Extra understands the pressures which learners have to face and especially to those school leavers, we say learn hard and also strive to be the best in all subjects. Congratulations to Lindsay Killeen of Clarendon High who has been voted our Sports Star of the Month. Your R250 voucher will be delivered soon.

No stopping these Selborne teams By DEREK HINDMAN The Selborne U15A rugby and water polo players can look back on a highly successful season. The water polo team ended up unbeaten. The rugby side only lost their first fixture of the season but ended up being the only Selborne team to beat Grey Bloem who are arguably the best rugby school in South Africa. The water polo team won all 31 fixtures which underlines their pedigree. The rugby side started out the season rated as 32nd in the country as an U15A outfit but finished this season in eighth position. The team played 14 fixtures and notched huge wins against arch-rivals Queen’s and Dale in home and away matches. Coaches Siyabonga Guzana (water polo) and Michael Cousins (rugby) concede that many of the

U15A and B players played both sports. “As an U15 group our A, B, C and D water polo teams only lost a total of four matches all season. Our teams adopted an “all for one and one for all” approach and it worked fantastically. Our players won the

Port Rex U15A tournament, the Kingswood competition and the prestigious Sterrenberg event at which we played against leading schools in SA,” said water polo coach Siyabonga. As captain, Bradley Johnson scored more than 20 goals before

being moved to the sideline because of a recurring rugby injury. “I play water polo now and hopefully I will be ready to get back in the pool next year. Doctors have told me to stop playing rugby all together. As I watched from the side lines I saw Luke Johnson score at least 40 goals for the season which was fantastic,” Bradley said. Commented rugby coach Mike Cousins: “I think our biggest day was beating Grey Bloem 9-0. It’s been a pleasure working with these guys who all move to U16 level next year.” U15A rugby captain Jerome Bossr was tremendous all season at fullback in scoring 16 tries in 14 matches and all nine points came from his boot against Grey Bloem. “I used to play flyhalf but I love it at fullback as I get more time to make decisions when I get the ball,” Jerome said.

Tag Rugby grows and grows By DEREK HINDMAN

In three months, Future Kings, Streetwise Games, the Tag Rugby and Rugby Legends Associations have introduced and nurtured 20 junior schools teams at U9 level to a point where they will play in the Xerox U9 Tag Rugby Tournament at Police Park in East London on November 9. The winning team represent Border schools at the National Schools’ Tag Rugby event in early December in Port Elizabeth. There is plenty of room for more sponsors to help “Tag a Team” as the game is played at all age group levels by boys and girls and there are many more schools who want to start playing. Tag rugby is endorsed by Saru and other provinces have taken up this game some time ago.

The Duncan Village Streetwise Games Association under the chairmanship of Nkosinathi Mlatshwa introduced the concept there. The idea took off like wild fire in Duncan Village before Future Kings and SA Legends stepped in to help take the game further afield. Last month the first small tournament was held in East London between eight schools. “At our November event primary schools from as far afield as Berlin, Needs Camp and Parkside will be here to compete against East London Schools. “I have been astounded at how fast this programme has taken off in disadvantaged areas where children are dying to play sport of any kind. We also hold a “Lads and Dads Tag rugby afternoon at Police Park at 3pm each Sunday as the game is safe for adults and children to play together. Those who are interested can come and join in,” Heinrich said. Anybody interested in the Tag Rugby concept can contact Heinrich on cell number 084 308 7709.

Grooming soccer youngsters The Premiere Futbol Academy, housed at Hudson High School's Dashwood Park Sports Centre, is headed by Wally Walters a former footballer with over 40 years experience in football conditioning and coaching. He loves coaching the youngsters and is passionate about passing his knowledge on to today's generation. Wally caters for youngsters in the 2-11 and 12-16 age groups and says the younger a player starts learning the game the better.

His academy provides a fundamental skills development programme which focuses on the learning of basic skills such as ball trapping, set plays and tactics. Practice days are Tuesday's Thursday's and Friday's running from 5pm to 7pm. "There is so much talent in the junior schools. On Friday night's we play 7-a-side soccer against various schools and the youngsters love it,'' he said. Wally can be contacted on 0782027839.

Cambridge High School travelled to Bonnievale in the Western Cape to compete in their first ever interdistricts developmental tournament, they didn't know what to expect. The team was accompanied and coached by Border Bowls development officer, Richard Vlotman, and at the end of it all Border ended second in their section of six teams. “The youngsters really blossomed once they found their feet and had heaps of fun. There was a lot of young talent on display which looks good for the future of the game,’’ said Richard. Games were played over 12 ends with Border beating Western Province, Boland A and B and C and losing to Southern Cape 16-8. Admitted Edward Schemel who played lead: "Going into the tournament I had absolutely no confidence but after we beat Boland C 21-6 my confidence just boosted. Playing under floodlights was great,'' said Jonathon Forbes who played third to skip Mihlali Sigwela. "We had a problem though in that none of us were very good at speaking Afrikaans and Afrikaans was mostly spoken. After that I can definitely say our Afrikaans has improved,'' Jonathan said to laughter. Skip Mihlali had the last word. "It was my first time out of the Eastern Cape so I was thrilled. It was also good to pit our skill against other bowlers but skipping is difficult and a huge challenge. We all wish other schools would start playing bowls so we can play more and I want to stay with the game until I grow old,'' he said. Next year to tournament will be staged in Oudtshoorn with Border hoping to send a male and female team.

hearts out in an U19 inter-district bowling tournament at Bonnievale? The cream of the youngsters from four bowls districts, all giving high-fives, jumping up and down and cheering on each other’s bowls, are currently having a ball of a time and experiencing the enjoyment and excitement that bowls offers a wide spectrum of our communities. With lively music in the background and keen coaches and managers all egging their players on, the atmosphere is simply electric. Some 14 teams of four players each are all competing for the Envar Buys Trophy (named after a young

during the last national tournament in Klerksdorp). The tournament took place in a relaxed atmosphere that was enjoyed by all young and old. Well done to Border for sending a team to Bonnievale with their manager Richard Vlotman. They had to travel 2000km back and forth to play in the tournament. It was such a pleasure meeting them for the first time. What of the future? Well, these young bowlers, most of them playing in their first inter-district bowling tournament, are proving that the myth of ‘old-men’s marbles’ is OUT and that youngsters can and are enjoying the sport that has contributed meaningfully in the past and currently to the regular international recognition of our Protea teams.

Stirling High athlete Nicole Venter, Grade 11, broke all records this year when she received a fifth white Cum Laude blazer. Currently in Grade 11, she has already represented South Africa at biathle, duathlon and triathlon and was selected for the South African water polo team at the end of 2012 as a non-travelling reserve. This year Nicole was in the team that won the national Adventure Race title along with Philip Jordaan, Clayton Fletcher and Daniel Cesler. A selection of this year’s achievements includes second place at the SA National Biathle Championships, Border cross-country; Border athletics; first in Border cross-country cycling; second overall in both the Merrifield Mile and Makro 5km swim; first place in the SA Triathlon Championships; third place at the SA Duathlon Championships and national Adventure Race winner. Nicole has done biathle since Grade 2 and triathlon since Grade 7. She has been encouraged all the way by her dad Lucas who introduced her to triathlon. “I suppose I like trying out sports which include running and swimming and biathle provides that but triathlon is the toughest of the events. I train every week at my running, swimming and cycling but do have to cut back when exams are near,’’ she said. During the interview Nicole revealed she had been invited by Triathlon SA to travel to Zimbabwe on November 14 as part of their junior academy team (18-19 age group). Nicole will return home the day before writing an end-ofyear Maths paper but said cheekily: “I will be taking my school books with.’’ Talking of her dad Lucas who also cycles and runs, Nicole said he was always there for her and was an inspiration. Nicole next year plans to enter the SpecSavers Ironman Triathlon in East London as she will be 18. Go girl.

Hail the champions. We are talking here about the Hudson Park U13A netball team coached by Zelda Smit. Not only was the team crowned Border champions, they earned the right to represent Border at the East Cape Championships held in East London where they ended runners-up after going down to Framesby 14-15 in the final. The team was captained by Camagwini Villim who Zelda described as a skilful player with excellent leadership and communication skills. Said Zelda who heads the Hudson Park netball Academy: "Being the best takes hard work and there has to be good communication between players. The players had to have the necessary skills to have got where they did and they always worked together as a team.''

Zelda, who has been coaching netball since 1990 and represented South Africa at indoor netball, also turned out for Free State, Border and the old Eastern Transvaal. Hudson beat Grens for the right to attend the championships and according to Zelda, Grens were a very good team. Zelda said part of the secret to being a good netball player was elevator skills (learning to jump high in the air), ball handling and the ability to twist the body when jumping. "When doing this, body balance is essential,'' she said. The team had two Eastern Cape representatives in Camagwini and Buhle Nzamo with Zelda saying it was Buhle who always inspired the team and was a brilliant goal shooter. Last year playing at U12 level this same team lost most of their games which makes this year's feat all that more amazing.

Cambridge so proud of Hlalumi By BRIAN McLEAN Feeling nervous while on the starting line was to be expected when tiny Grade 6 Cambridge Primary athlete Hlalumi Mxi competed in the World Biathle Championships in Cypres earlier this month. Hlalumi came third in her heat in the Youth D Girls' section and with the top five qualifying in each heat, she found herself in the final where she finished 11th. "I was very nervous and when the starter's gun went off, was surprised and remember asking myself is this the start. Is it really now.'' The heat and final were held on the same day and comprises a 500-metre run, a 50-metre swim and

further 500-metre run. This is the second time Hlalumi has made the SA side and travelled to Bulgaria two years ago. Hlalumi said she trained really hard for the event under coach Lyn Shone. "I trained three times a week and I felt so proud to represent South Africa. My mom Pumela and dad Sabelo were also so proud I made the side,'' she said. Hlalumi said all the visiting athletes were friendly and she made special friends with some of the Koreans who could speak broken English. "Cypress is a nice country. We went shopping and I bought a lot of key rings as gifts for friends back home,’’ she said.

When it comes to achieving try this for size. Stirling High School’s Jamie Jackson has been a member of the Border swimming team since Grade 4. He has competed at the Level 3 Nationals (highest level in age groups) for six years and this year competed in the Level 5 Senior Nationals against the likes of Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh. He is ranked in the top three in his age group for 50m breaststroke and 18th in the Open 50m breaststroke in South Africa. He has also played Border hockey for seven years, Border water polo for four years and represented Border in biathle last year, coming fifth in his age group in South Africa. Last year he received the Victor Ludorum for swimming and

We were called the Awesome Foursome and I think that’s where I gained confidence in myself,’’ he said. “My success is a big thing for my family as I only joined Stirling at start of Grade 10 last year. My parents have never pushed me. You know it’s wrong for parents to do that as it causes undue pressure,’’ he said wisely. But swimming is hard work as he trains in the mornings on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s and every single afternoon and that’s why he also likes team sports. “Swimming can be a lonely sport but other sports offer the chance to play as a team,’’ he said. Does he feel he can reach the top in his favourite sport, swimming? Definitely.

EL prepares for huge water polo event Event a warm-up for SA Schools' inter-provincial. By DEREK HINDMAN

The Border girls' U19 school’s team will be ready to put in a strong challenge at the interprovincial water polo tournament due to be staged in East London from December 6-10, according to team coach Bevan Manson. Last month’s Co Ed School’s National Tournament in Port Elizabeth was ideal preparation for many of the player who are likely to make provincial teams. In December at least 1600 water polo players, consisting of boys and girls teams in each age group from U13 to U18, will play provincial finals at all levels. With at least 5000 visiting the city for the event, it should provide a welcome boost for the hospitality fraternity. Western Province has traditionally been strong at senior girl’s level. They won last year’s event in Port Elizabeth as well as seven of the last 10 events. “My Border team will have South African U19 national team players Lindsay Killeen,

Nina Cressy, Taylor Louw and Page Meecham playing for them, so I think our experience will count a a lot. "The U18 girls event should be a straight shootout between Gauteng, Western Province and us. The Border U18 girls last won this

event in 2009 but and they finished third in 2010, 2011 and 2012,” Manson added. The Joan Harrison Complex will be the main venue but teams will also play fixtures at Clarendon High, Selborne College, Hudson Park, Port Rex and Merrifield.

Wyclef Vlitoor, left, and Bulelani Ngaki who have made the SA Sevens rugby team which is to tour Portugal next year.

Well done to Dale Junior for providing two players who have been selected to represent the South African Sevens rugby team which is to tour Portugal early next year. The two are Dale U13A stars Wyclef Vlitoor (outside centre) and eighthman Bulelani Ngaki who were two of the stars in the powerful Dale team which only lost one game this season. Amazingly Wyclef and Bulelani produced an average of three tries a game and consistently earned man-of-the-match awards for their efforts. Wyclef, who started playing rugby at U9 level while at Eureka Primary School in Burgersdorp, is also a sprint star who has represented South Africa at athletics every year since 2010. While essentially a sprinter, he also does long jump and shot put. “My selection means a lot to me. An outside centre needs good hands, must be able to take the gap, have a fair bit of pace and be a good defender,’’ he said. The sturdily built Bulelani said he couldn’t believe it when he was named in the SA Sevens side. “I was blown away and am really looking forward to touring Portugal,’’ he said. Bulelani started rugby at U7 level while attending Crewe Primary and like Wyclef, came to Dale Primary last year. “A good eighthman must have a lot of strength, be a good tackler with good visual skills so he can read the game,’’ he said. He has represented Border at athletics and also plays hockey and cricket.

When it comes to debating, Grade 11 Hudson Park learner Rachel Gardiner has been there and done it. In August this year, she was a member of the SA debating team which travelled to Istanbul for the Eurasian Schools' Debating Championships where the team won after beating Canada in the final and subsequently were placed third in the world. Rachel, who is to be the school's head girl next year, said she started debating by default. "I started by default as when in Grade 9, I was brought into the debating team after another girl withdrew and I had to quickly find my feet. I didn't even know what debating was about,'' she said. After attending the Nationals with the Eastern Cape team, Rachel found herself as one of 12 trialists which travelled to Johannesburg where she was selected. So what makes a good debater, I ask? "One has to really know your stuff and express views clearly. Also, reading a lot helps with general knowledge as any subject could be thrown at you,'' Rachel says. Rachel adds that some people have the affinity and the aptitude to put themselves across well and this is what separates a good debater from a really good one. Rachel, it seems, is the latter.

Queen of the golf course Demi Flanagan of Hudson Park High recently represented the Border Women’s Open team at the recent inter-provincial golf tournament held at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club. Her scores for the five rounds were all under par and Demi won four matches and drew one. Border came third at the tournament and Demi was presented with the most valuable player award – an amazing achievement considering she is only 17. Other news is that three Hudson Park High golfers, Andre Nel, Byron Toogood and Courtney Wicks played in the A Division of the King William's Town Open recently and did Hudson Park proud by claiming all three podium positions. Andre won the tournament by two shots over Byron, with Courtney claiming third place. Tristan Naude and Athanathi Ngendane came second and third respectively in the B Division.

One of George Randell’s undoubted stars coached by Antonie Barnard is diminutive U13A flyhalf and vice-captain of the side, Marcello Flemmer, aged 12. Marcello is also a cricketer of note more specifically a fast bowler - who veteran Border cricketer, Richard Kent, believes has the talent to go all the way to the top. But let's deal first with his rugby talent. "A flyhalf must control the game and always be ready to look for holes (in the opposition defence). He must also communicate well with his backline,'' he says, which is not bad for a 12-yearold. Richard points out Marcello also has a good boot on him and as a rightfooter, is able to convert from as far as 35-metres out. Marcello this year made the Border U12 side which travelled to Riversdal At cricket, he also turns out for the schools’ U13A side and started playing aged nine. Richard is quick to point

the moment I can’t make up my mind which sport I like the best. Mike hopes it will be cricket and Antonie, rugby but the last word belongs to Marcello. “A rugby player must always have self-belief. That’s the difference between becoming a great player rather than just a good one.’’ Marcello’s future looks bright whatever sport he chooses.

out that when he first saw Marcello bowl he was amazed. “He would run in from the boundary and deliver a beautifully timed out-swinger and I thought this boy’s got talent.’’ Marcello says the best advice he received was when playing in the U10 Border cricket trials. “A selector came to me and said I must follow through with my delivery and it has helped a lot. George Randell’s top coach By BRIAN McLEAN

When it comes to coaches, George Randell Primary are lucky to have the services of Antonie Barnard who has coached rugby at the school since 2003 and the U13A side since 2008. Not only did Antonie coach the U13A school team on two unbeaten tours he also coached the Border Sevens side that came within a whisker of reaching the final in Pretoria. "Regarding the Sevens tournament, Border were drawn in Pool A against the Lions, Western Province and the Griffons which was referred to as the Pool of death. "But we topped our Pool after beating the Lions 14-12, Western Province 12-5 and the Griffons 17-5 and in the quarter-finals we upstaged a good Sharks team14-10. "In the semi-finals we were drawn against the Lions who beat us 12-7 after

they were awarded a penalty try in the last minute. We then beat Boland 21-10 to end third,'' he said. He is grateful for help, financial and other, from Pollocks Pro Photo Shop and Eco Tanks as the side received no assistance from the mother body. Antonie, who has an IRB Level 2 coaching diploma and IRB Level 1 (law), is also proud of his U13A team who remained unbeaten for the second successive year when touring Graaf-Reinet. "Many of the players are still U12 so they are punching way above their weight. Last year we beat good sides as Grey (PE), Graeme and Summerwood and this year the side thrashed Cradock (56-0), St Andrew's (Bloem) and Westering (25-5). Said Antonie: "I love coaching at George Randell, it's a real honour. Sometimes the boys have to tell me to stop as it's getting too dark.''
