NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN

Summer gardening chores “Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds

W

e have had a very cold, wet and windy start to spring. Not very inspiring, however the lawns are greening up and growing, weeds are thriving and there is no time like the present to get stuck into your garden. WHAT TO DO: Start a feeding programme. Use liquid or granular fertilizers on a monthly basis throughout spring and summer on your lawn and in your garden beds. Feed plants in containers and hanging baskets with a liquid fertilizer once a week and water them every day. Adding compost and mulch to beds is very important and beneficial. Compost improves the texture and waterholding capacity of the soil. While the nutritional content of compost might not be very high, it is still valuable for adding humus and microorganisms to the soil. Mulch helps prevent weeds, keeps an even soil temperature and reduces water evaporation from the soil. WHAT TO PLANT: Now is the time to plant perennials for year-round colour. In sunny places plant dwarf Pentas, free-flowering Angelonias, butterfly-like Gaura, Salvias in various colours and long-lived Petunias or Alyssum. In partial shade Begonia Dragon Wings, available in red, white, pink and salmon are the best. Also try Fuchsias, New Guinea Impatiens, Inca Lilies, Aquilegias and Coleus.

s 2017 draws to a close, the What’s On team is proud and gratified to reflect on what has proven to be a most momentous moment in our history.

This year we celebrated our 50th year of publication – no small feat when one considers the increasingly tough economic storms that have battered our city, and the rest of our country, in recent years. Not only have we survived, the What’s On is going from strength to strength, as we continuously innovate and leverage new technologies to best showcase our beautiful region and the many fine businesses rooted here. This year, our social media platforms – already among the most visited in the province – set new records of engagement, and our brand new website, www.thewhatson.co.za is a must-visit resource to plan your weekend or catch up on local activities. Thank you to all our advertisers and our many loyal readers and online visitors for making the What’s On your partner of choice in tourism, retail, leisure and entertainment. We take great pride on showcasing our beautiful city to visitors and residents alike, and look forward to the many new and exciting ways we plan on being of service to our city. As always, the December edition of the What’s On will be a bumper holiday publication as we prepare to welcome our upcountry visitors. Don’t hesitate to send us details of your events and activities, and be sure to check out our website for details on how to maximise your exposure, both in print and online. Good luck to all our matriculants and everyone knuckling down to end-of-year study. Vasbyt! The holidays are near.

Out

Box of the

Charity Shop

CMR East London – one of the oldest community service organisations in the greater Border-Kei region – is opening a new charity shop in Nahoon, and urgently needs your help to make this new venture a success. The Out of the Box Charity Shop is located in Old Transkei Road, next to Nahoon Fisheries and across the road from Wakaberry and PNA. “The purpose of the new shop is twofold,” says CMR East London Manager Gaye Moonieya. “It is aimed at bringing in extra income in view of recent subsidy cuts and the constant need to fund our work. But we also strive to give dignity to people by making it possible for them to buy items they need at a discount price, rather than receiving hand-outs.” CMR East London gratefully receives many donations that they can’t immediately use or pass on to other organisations, she added. “So this is also an outlet for that. When you simply hand out donations, you are never sure whether it is what the recipient most needs. By allowing people to choose what they want, you know that it’s what they need and what they will find the best use for.” The shop is gratefully taking donations of: •

clothing and shoes

kitchen and household items

jewellery

toys

books

bedding/curtains

CDS DVDS

magazines

There is limited street parking in front of the shop, but ample additional enclosed parking around the corner in Smartt Road. The shop also has a back entrance and a ramp for easy access.
