HISTORY in motion Over 20 pre-war Grand Prix cars confirmed for the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival starting 25 November in East London.

T

he South African Historic Grand Prix Festival promises to be as exciting an experience as they come – and one not to be created again any time soon.

GT cars, the race meeting promises loads of thrills.

Over 20 vintage Grand Prix cars are confirmed for the historic reunion of some of the exact cars that raced in the South African Grand Prix between 1934 and 1939. Some of them are even winners of the race, including the inaugural race-winning Maserati 8CM and the 1937-winning ERA.

If you’re keen on a bigger classic experience, then follow the cars down to Franschhoek on 1 and 2 December for the Grand Prix Garden Party where the cars will be on display once again alongside some 120 of the best classic cars from around the country. Val de Vie Estate, located between Franschhoek and Paarl, will host a spectacular experience on the pristine polo fields with live entertainment and fine food.

Never again will an assembly of pre-war machinery of this calibre be seen in South Africa. It’s a spectacle not to be missed with a historic opportunity to see these incredible cars up close and hear and smell their irreplaceable allure. All in the very place they competed some 80 years ago.

Also confirmed for the event are a number of Rileys, Bugattis, the Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 from the 1936 race, a local Aston Martin Ulster, and another Ulster which is a very famous car, and a brace of ex-SA Grand Prix MGs, including the very K3 that Dick Seaman raced in the 1934 SAGP, amongst others.

Much of the original Prince George Race Track in East London still exists. The cars will retrace the historic 17km circuit in a parade taking place between two short sprint races on the current track on 25 November. Amongst the support races from historic single seaters, touring cars and sports and

Limited general access and VIP Hospitality tickets for both the East London Race event and the Grand Prix Garden Party are available for purchase at www. sahistoricgp.com or follow the event on Facebook - SA Historic Grand Prix Festival. Kids under 12 gain free access so bring the family!

East London’s Grand Prix past - a book begging to be written

By Glenn Hollands

O

ff the Circuit: A South African Town Makes Grand Prix History, will be launched in November this year and will coincide with the historic Grand Prix festival to be hosted at East London’s legendary race circuit. There are several factors that made this uniquely East London story worth telling but mostly it was the passion of veteran racing enthusiasts like Jim Redman, Norman Hickel, John Pringle, Clarence Coetzer, Ray van den Berg, and many others. Listening to their memories of racing endeavour, track construction and redesign and cobbled together racing machines, it seemed crazy that their stories had never been documented. This book makes a very small dent in that challenge. When researching this book, I came the realisation that East London had been short-changed. The 1930s motoring reporter for the Daily Dispatch, Brud Brown recognised the unique capacity of the people of East London to leach a bit of excitement from

facilities and resources that were generally unremarkable. Brown managed to kick-start the Grand Prix adventure because he had a few overseas contacts, a talent for spin but mostly because he had an inordinate appetite for risk. It became clear to me that Brown’s vision had paid off in spades – although he had garnered little recognition for his efforts. From 1934 to 1939 the crowds that flocked to East London in trains, ships and cars rivalled any sports event in the Southern Hemisphere. Not only did the city lap up the attention and the large tourist spend that came with it, it responded in a coherent and creative manner that could, and indeed should still be an example, to the city’s current economic investment planners. The city’s leadership sailed out to meet the arriving race teams and drivers were treated as royalty – their appreciation soon became apparent in the publicity generated back in Europe and America.

I was fascinated by the different spectrum of people that were drawn into racing in far flung places. Grand Prix racing in this era attracted the rich, the idiotically daring and many with seriously dodgy political inclinations. Fascism was on the rise and birthed its own racing elite in the form of the 1937 Auto Union team, British woman racer Fay Taylour and her equally politically tainted compatriot, Richard Seaman. They would all be welcomed to South Africa, and some to the winner’s podium in East London, by the right-wing politician, Oswald Pirow – a self-proclaimed admirer of Hitler and other fascist leaders. Towards the end of the 30s, Mario Massacurati – an Italian engineer who had helped to build Hout Bay harbour, would be interred in a POW camp despite his contribution to South African infrastructure and his popularity with the East London racing fans. In the wake of the austerity that followed WW2, East London managed to keep motor racing alive with the beachfront Winter Handicap races. Although lacking

Grand Prix status, these races were hugely popular and seriously dangerous. Prominent landmarks like the Kings Hotel and the Windmill roadhouse were an integral part of the circuit that would sometimes be likened to the inner-city circuits like Monaco. With the 1960s return to the redesigned Grand Prix circuit on the West Bank came the big international names like Hill, Moss, Brabham, Bonnier and East London ploughed its still limited resources into a series of annual events that many still regard as the peak of motor racing in South Africa. Races were multiple day events with the public allowed to scrutinise cars being race prepped and to camp out at the track. Practise sessions attracted 10 000 or more and that figure increased by nearly tend fold on race day. Ultimately East London lost out to larger economic forces and GP racing moved to Johannesburg, but the rich history of the Grand prix era survives, not just in racing circles but in the memories of anyone who was fortunate enough to make it to the track.

The above is a short reflection on writing the book on East London’s Grand Prix history provisionally titled Off the Circuit: A Small South African City Makes Grand Prix History. The book was written by Glenn Hollands and is scheduled to be released in time for the historic GP Festival in November 2018. Copies of the book may be pre-ordered from glenhol@telkomsa.net or rentia.ellis@gmail.com

WHAT’S ON MOTORING

EXCITING HYUNDAI KONA CROSS-OVER

W

By Gerry Gericke. SAGMJ

hy is the Cross-Over so popular with the motoring public? As our roads are fast deteriorating the Cross-Over and SUV models with their elevated driving position and ground clearance is ever more sought after. The launch venue took place on the winding undulating roads in the Lanseria Airport vicinity which are relatively quiet from traffic. Two models were available at the launch, a conventional 2 litre 4 cylinder equipped with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and a turbocharged 3-cylinder 1 litre engine coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. We assume that the 1 Litre model will be available with an automatic gearbox in the near future as manual gearboxes are fast disappearing. The modern Automatic transmission is so advanced that it is preferable to a conventional manual gearbox. We commenced the test route using the more powerful 2 litre Kona and then after the halfway changeover switched to the 1 litre model. The smaller engined model was definitely the more desirable car! Hyundai has enhanced the motor driven steering which enables quicker steering action due to increased gear ratio. This resulted in an entire new responsiveness combined with

gas filled high performance dampers and new suspension. The 17 cm ground clearance enables the Kona to tackle off-road tracks with confidence. We felt that the less powerful model was tauter and more versatile than its more powerful and heavier brother. Hyundai is the only manufacturer which uses its own steel resulting in a strong light body which increases passenger safety. The Hyundai Kona is one of the safest cars in its segment confirmed by its 5-star safety rating. The active safety features include ABS (Anti-skid braking), ESP Electronic Stability programme, downhill brake control, Blind-spot collision warning and rear crosstraffic collision warning. Inside the cockpit a 7-inch floating touchscreen controls the infotainment system, navigation, media and connectivity features, also a full onboard computer to facilitate travelling long distance. The Kona offers plenty of space for both passengers and luggage including a hidden storage tray. VERDICT: A worthy competitor for the Ford Ecosport which rules the segment presently. No other manufacturer can match the warranty offered by Hyundai which makes it our choice quality and desirability wise!
