Flying way up high How many of us stop to watch whenever an aircraft passes overhead and dream about where the pilot’s flight path may take them? Or watch a microlight swoop up and around on a perfect summer’s day and wish, for a moment, to be as free. If you have ever stopped to wonder what a ‘bird’s eye view’ looks like, or what it must feel like to have ‘the wind beneath your wings’ then consider signing up for flying lessons. A talk with a flight instructor at either Wings Flight School, for those interested in microlights and small fixed wing aircraft, or AV8 Helicopters, if helicopters are your thing, will leave you feeling reassured that hopping into a small vessel and leaving the earth behind really is a thrilling and safe hobby! “It’s certainly a lot safer to fly from one South African city to another than it is to drive your car,” says Patrick Hill, safety officer at Wings Flight School. While AV8’s Brian Katz agrees, saying: “Regulations governing the maintenance of all aircraft are extensive”.

16

Hill is one of six instructors at Wings Flight School, two of which train students to fly microlights and four on fixed wing light aircraft. According to Sharon Seager, who owns Wings Flight School, many avid flyers begin with microlights as it is probably the most affordable way to enjoy powered flight. Ten hours minimum of dual instruction, usually with lessons lasting an hour at a time, will allow you to sit your solo flight test. After this, another 15 hours of solo flying, will enable you to do your first cross country flight, of 90 minutes, with an instructor. Following this, students have to do two more cross country solo flights and seven theory exams before they can apply for a National Pilot’s Licence (NPL). “Don’t be fooled into thinking you can do this in a month – it takes a minimum of three months to get your licence. Weather is a limiting factor, so it is actually better done over the course of a year, because then you get to experience all different kinds of weather patterns,” says Sharon.

The instructors over at AV8 helicopters, which provides chartered helicopter flights as well as flight instruction, are equally passionate about their work. Five instructors are available to conduct helicopter pilot training at the AV8 accredited helicopter flight training school based at the East London Airport. The minimum licence one needs to fly a helicopter is a private pilot’s licence (PPL) – which involves at least 50 hours of training time. This time is made up of at least 35 hours of dual instruction and at least 15 hours of solo flying time, five hours of which involve cross country flying. Katz says getting a helicopter pilot’s licence can be done in three months. So there you have it – two excellent flight training

schools on East London’s doorstep – offering wannabe pilots a chance to fly like a bird and enjoy the world from a perspective that very few humans get the chance to do. Border Aviation Club has been teaching people to fly since the 1940’s. It is an organisation filled with like-minded Aviation enthusiasts and has a Flight School attached to it. It is also the only Flying Club in the Border region. We offer Fixed-Wing flight training from Private Pilot Licenses right though to Commercial Pilot Licenses. Whether you are wanting to start flying as a career or just as a hobby, Border Aviation Club is the place to be. Book review & giveaway Simply SMS your name and DIET to 083 388 9517 or whatsonwin@gmail.com by 20 November 2013 at 12 noon. Books to be collected from What’s On office in Nahoon. The 2-Day Diet is the original, clinically proven 5:2 diet to get you slim and healthy, as developed by acclaimed scientists Dr Michelle Harvie and Prof Tony Howell at Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention (all author proceeds go to this charity). To reach your perfect weight, all you need to do is follow this low-carb intermittent diet for two days a week. For the rest of the week just eat normally but sensibly. It really is that simple, and the science proves it: in trials followers lost more weight than those on continuous calorie-controlled diets, almost twice as much fat, and more centimetres around their waist - and they were 26

more successful at keeping it off! The 2-Day Diet is packed with clear, safe and simple guidance, plus meal planners and 100 delicious and filling recipes to help you on your way. You'll find out how and why the diet works, and the numerous proven health benefits associated with it, including: reducing cancer risks; lowering high blood pressure; anti-ageing effects; and improving well-being, mood and energy levels. This is a unique way of eating that can completely retrain your appetite and rejuvenate your body on a cellular level. Finally, you can enjoy your food and stop worrying about your weight for good. http://www.amazon.co.uk

Manage Your Stress In 76 Seconds When you are in a fix and you need to calm your nerves, use the following breathing practice recommended by Dr Andrew Weil. The 4-7-8 breathing practice shifts the autonomic nervous system away from the sympathetic predominance (which triggers your stress responses such as a racing heart and sweaty palms) and allows the parasympathetic nervous system to take over. Sit or stand up straight and place the tip of your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. Now breathe in silently through your nose to the slow count of 4. Hold your breath to

the count of 7. Exhale through your mouth to the count of 8, making a slight audible sound. Repeat the 4-7-8 cycle another three times, for a total of four breathing exercises. If you have children or teenagers, www.gozen.com has a teaching video on the 4-7-8 breathing exercise that may be useful to share with them. Or if the 4-7-8 rhythm seems to challenging for your child or you, try the 5-5-5. Inhale to the count of five, hold for five, exhale for five, once this approach is mastered you can add another 5, holding the breath out for 5. Again do this for at least 3-4 breathing rounds.

Drugs stopped working? We can help. Narcotics Anonymous meetings held at Saint Nicholas Church, Pell Street, Beacon Bay every Wednesday and Friday from 7-8pm. All are welcome.
