Worried about sleep-related

breathing disorders?

MySleep, which now also has an East London office, is a clinical medical services company that provides healthcare services and products, with a strong emphasis on sleep-related breathing disorders. MySleep offers a tailored service where patients get tested for sleep apnea. Our services include home-based sleep studies, timely reports, continuous feedback to the specific requirements of the referring physician and complete CPAP, BiPAP treatment options. In addition to the diagnoses and treatment options, MySleep offers its patients a 3 year compliance monitoring program to ensure that each and every patient receives the best possible treatment.

is another form of sleep apnea characterised by airflow cessation due to the brain not signalling the breathing muscles to work. It is important to note how tired you feel and whether your signs and symptoms affect your daily routine.

Sleep apnea is a common yet often overlooked sleeping disorder. It is estimated that 158 million people worldwide suffer from sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) and affects approximately 2% of women and 4% of men worldwide. What is sleep apnea? Latest statistics show that 50% of the adult male population snores, of whom 20% suffer from sleep apnea. In the female post-menopausal population, this prevalence is the same.Sleep apnea is characterised by frequent pauses of breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by blocked airflow during sleep from narrowing and closure of the upper airway. Central sleep apnea 10

Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea: • Snoring • Chronic tiredness or sleepiness at work • Poor concentration or memory impairment • Morning headaches • Irritability • Poor quality sleep • No energy • High blood pressure

Medical consequences of sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than is generally understood. Quality and duration of sleep affect both our performance and physical wellbeing. OSA can affect quality of life negatively by impairing alertness and altering mood and memory. It can also result in workplace and motor vehicle accidents. OSA may also increase the risk of developing long term health risks such as: • High blood pressure • Heart attacks • Stroke • Obesity • Type 2 diabetes • Increases risk for glucose intolerance and insulin resistance How to detect and diagnose sleep apnea: • A screening questionnaire done by a healthcare practitioner will give an accurate indication of the probability of sleep apnea by asking questions about your sleep schedule and habits, • A comprehensive home or hospital-based sleep study test will identify sleep apnea. With the sleep study test, sensors are placed onto your body to record your sleeping pattern. These sensors measure various parameters of what happens to your body during sleep, • A home-based sleep study will accurately qualify and quantify obstructive sleep apnea, but will not always identify other sleep disorders or medical conditions.

Steps to get tested for sleep apnea at MySleep: 1. Obtain a referral from your healthcare practitioner 2. Please fax or email the referral. Medical aid authorisation is obtained for the night of the sleep study. If you cannot make the appointment, please notify our office at least 24 hours before the time of the study 3. A qualified technician will meet you at our rooms or hospital to explain the process and to set up the equipment 4. Please return the equipment the following morning. If you are in hospital, the technician will collect the equipment. The data will be downloaded and verified 5. MySleep maintains a prestigious network of sleep clinicians and physicians to review and interpret the test data received 6. Immediately after the analysis has been completed, the final report will be send to your healthcare practitioner 7. Based on the report, your healthcare practitioner and experts from MySleep, will recommend treatment. For any queries, please contact our East London Branch @ 043 050 4224 or Visit www.mysleep.co.za Sleep Well Live Well

e invite women to a one day self-INpowerment workshop designed to encourage mental and physical clarity in a threatening situation.

WIP was inspired by what happened to Mark Grobbelaar’s friend Alison Botha. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, Miss Universe 2017, accredits this workshop for saving her life when she was involved in an attempted hijacking in June 2017. WIP, Woman INpowered is a Personal Protection Program “more than self-defence”. It is an extremely simple and easy to learn, yet devastatingly effective. The self-INpowerment system is designed specifically for women to give them the mental and physical ability to make "a Choice" in a life threatening situation. WIP is a 4 session course which includes a Manual and Certificate and comprises of a physical and mental component. It ultimately will give you Proof of Inpowerment by breakthrough! WIZARDS ON WHEELS SHOW PUTS ITS SPELL ON EAST LONDON AGAIN

by Don Bryce

S

aturday 29 September will see the annual Wizards on Wheels show (WOW) taking place at Port Rex Technical High School. The event was founded in 2005 by previous Border Street Rod Classic and V8 Club chairman Johan Hattingh and his wife Joyce, who saw the need for an event in East London where car clubs, motoring enthusiasts and new-car dealers could get together and show off their vehicles. The event is gaining popularity around the region, with exhibitors from Port Eliz-

56

abeth, Queenstown and other centres attending. Organiser Heather Bridger says, “The 2017 WOW was the most successful one to date. It has also become an important feature on the school’s calendar of events. If the show continues to grow in the future, we will consider moving it to the lower sports fields, which offer more space”. Compared with other car shows around the country, WOW is pretty much up there with the best of them.

DYNAMIC EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES: 043 726 2225 / 082 317 6235

Bridger says that a lot of preparation and organisation goes into putting it together. “The whole family is catered for, with the inclusion of food stalls, entertainment for the children and the mini flea market. The revamped fathers’ and old boys’ club, now renamed ‘The Tool Shed’, will be open for the thirsty and those wanting to follow sport on the big screen”. Exhibitors don’t need to belong to motoring clubs. The show is open to any interesting vehicle whether it be a car or a bike or anything that is considered special and worthy of being shown off. Even if it is a work in progress, and can be brought to the show, it is more than welcome. A lot of interest has already been shown by the various motorsport clubs, with a number of karts, racing cars, bikes, stock cars, drift cars and 4x4’s to be displayed this year. Organiser Barry Gradwell says “The public can expect a top class show of vehicles ranging from Vintage to Modern, from Classic to Exotic and everything in between. Exhibitors have the opportunity of displaying their vehicles to the public and meeting and chatting with fellow enthusiasts about their pride and joy.

WOW is all about showing off your vehicle and attracting the attention that it deserves. We all know the amount of work that goes into keeping our vehicles in pristine condition”. There is still space for food stalls, craft stalls, flea market stalls and commercial stalls, so whether it be Dinky toys, clothing, car parts, sweets and treats or whatever else you would like to sell, bring it along. Anyone interested in having a car or motorcycle-related stall on the day can contact Heather Bridger on 076 144 8376 or 043 736 2698 to book a spot. Contact person for food stalls and craft stalls is Alwyn Schoeman on 083 461 3138. Those interested in displaying vehicles can contact Vaughn Smith on 082 345 8086 or Leslie Thomas on 083 412 8138 or e-mail lesliet@telkomsa. net, or Barry Gradwell on 083 518 9600. As usual, new-vehicle dealers are more than welcome to display. Vehicle exhibitors will have free entry for driver and one passenger. Cost for spectators is R30 for adults and R10.00 for scholars. Gates will be open from 7am for exhibitors, who must be parked and set up by no later than 9am. Gates open to spectators at 10am.

WHAT’S ON MOTORING

Ford Ecosport

By Gerry Gericke. SAGMJ SUVs are becoming increasingly popular with the motoring public as our roads continue to deteriorate and ground clearance becomes ever more important. The Ford Ecosport, which has sold more than 45 000 units in South Africa since its launch in 2013, is packed with the latest technology and that makes it extremely attractive to the motoring public. Sitting behind the wheel the driver is faced with an incredible number of technological gadgets to enhance driving experience. Its award winning EcoBoost 3-cylinder turbo boosted petrol engine is extremely frugal in fuel consumption and provides not only exhilarating performance, but is also very quiet. We have always supported the use of automatic gearboxes, today they are far more efficient and swap ratios imperceptibly. Ford has also provided paddles on the steering wheel to

allow overriding of the automatic function. Active driving safety has been also stepped up across the range with ESC (Electronic Stability Control), TC (Traction Control), RSC (Roll Stability Control) and HLA (Hill launch assist). The 2018 Ecosport also features a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), which alerts the driver when any of the tyres begin to lose pressure. The dashboard indicator showed the tyre losing pressure at a rapid rate necessitating pulling off the road immediately. What a super feature, it can easily save many lives, one reads every day about taxis overturning with huge loss of life. On the money side, it also saved the tyre which is after all a very expensive part of a vehicle today. Sensibly Ford provides a full-size spare wheel, a must for SA conditions. Ford vehicles are getting better every year and enjoy features as standard that are only found in more expensive upmarket vehicles. An 8-inch touchscreen dominates the centre of the dash where one controls most of the salient features of this Hi-tech vehicle. Buyers can choose either full leather upholstery (on the Titanium model) or cloth seats. A host of smart stowage solutions include a false bottom in the boot floor to conceal valuable items.
