Big treat for motor enthusiasts BY DON BRYCE

C

oming up on Saturday 1 October is the eagerly-awaited 12th annual Wizards on Wheels Car Show. The display, which has become one of the biggest events on the local motoring calendar, was started in 2005 by the chairman of the Border Street Rod and V8 Club, Johan Hattingh. His idea was to put together a show involving all motoring clubs and private enthusiasts in the region, inviting them to display their vintage, classic and unusual vehicles. WOW is more than just a car show; it offers a day’s outing for the whole family with food stalls, industrial stalls, a mini flea market, a big screen TV for rugby fans and pub facilities for the thirsty. Organiser Barry Gradwell quotes the show’s slogan: “‘We want your car and anything extraordinary on wheels’. Whether or not you belong to a specific club feel free to bring your vehicle, as long as it’s something different or unique,” He goes on to say that there is a special surprise coming from Port Elizabeth this year, something that hasn’t been seen here before, but you will have to attend the show to find out what that is! In addition, there should be drift cars, racing cars, stock cars, go-karts, motorcycles and 4x4’s, including a 4x4 contingent from Port Elizabeth. Food stalls are already allocated, but Gradwell says there is still space for other types of stalls. “Anything from model cars 54

to clothing, car parts, sweets and treats to virtually whatever you can think of is welcome”. Cost per stall stand is R100 and any parties interested may contact Joyce Hattingh on 043 741 2577 or 084 798 6248 to book a spot. “We are expecting exhibitors from all over the region, including Port Elizabeth and Queenstown”, says Gradwell. “The motor dealers have also been invited, and the response so far has been good. Last year we had over 2000 spectators through the gates, and this year we expect even more. I think the public can expect a show of a high standard with great displays and plenty of vehicles from old to new. For exhibitors, it’s an opportunity to meet and chat to fellow enthusiasts about their pride and joy. That’s what the show is all about, to bring people with the same interests at heart together”. Anyone wanting to display vehicles can contact either Vaughn Smith on 082 345 8086 or Leslie Thomas on 083 412 8138 Entry is free to exhibitors of old and exotic vehicles, allowing driver and one passenger per vehicle. Vehicles to be parked by 9am at the latest. Gates open at 10am for the public. Cost for spectators is R30 for adults and R10.00 for scholars. For a nominal fee of R5.00 there will be secure onsite public parking on the netball courts. There will be a braai after the show. Braai packs will be on sale and the public is welcome to attend.
