nd just like that, with a whiff of jasmine in the air and a promise of gentler temperatures, September has arrived. Looking at the fourteenday weather forecast, there’s also the promise of some muchneeded spring rain. Welcome to our September edition. We had great fun preparing the story about Life on the Buffalo River. I hope you too will find it interesting and take time out to visit the various establishments at the harbour. I would like to dedicate this edition to all the people who make this publication possible. Thank you to each and every advertiser - we are proud to have you in our fold. Within these pages you will find the best coffees, the best brekkies, and restaurants with the best views and settings. You will find the best spots for a family or romantic breakaway, great family-fun places, and the best shopping experiences. Also the best jewellers, the purest water, the healthiest trends and the best party venues.

6

Within these pages you will find someone who will teach you to fly, who will take you on a cruise or a horseback adventure, who will skydive with you. Or if pampering’s more your thing, you will find that too. Then, a huge thank you to the Coral Print pre-press, printing and finishing staff for humoring me and my insane deadlines month after month. You guys rock! Local is so lekker! Please see our events listing from page 44 onwards. Once again there’s something for everyone ... yes, even an evening with Nataniel is on offer this month!! The Music of Queen on 6 September at the Guild Theatre is another not-to-bemissed event. Should you wish to advertise with us, please contact Rentia on 079 594 2267 or Tirsa on 043 735 2059. Enjoy what East London has to offer this month and send us any event-related info. We will publish it free of charge.

LIFE

on the

Locals may be surprised to read about the burgeoning hub of activity on the Buffalo River but it’s true, Buffalo River has a new lease on life and the revamp of Latimer’s Landing has started. Make the most of spring this month and take some time to explore the leisure offerings around our river port – you won’t be disappointed.

O

cean breezes, a working harbour with ships and cranes to delight the kids, great fish and chips next to the river or a fresh Cape salmon to take home for the pan – what’s not to like? Buffalo River has a myriad of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Relax with some quayside refreshments or a lunch, take to the water on a cruise or if you’re the more energetic type, try your hand at rowing or learning how to sail. It’s all there for the taking on both the east and west banks. Here’s a roundup of life on the Buffalo River and what’s on offer:

18

Food and drinks with a view

Sea Spirit Fish Market The brainchild of Mark and Cammy McArthur, this little gem is your onestop-shop for fresh line fish, frozen shellfish and a variety of frozen fish. There’s a little takeaway selling a range of light meals (fish and chips is a paltry R35) and if you time it right, you can watch the highly skilled crew members scale, debone, butterfly or fillet their catch once the boats are in. A bonus is the sms messages sent out to their growing database of customers as the boats dock with a list of the catch. They welcome customers to bring some wine or a six-pack and enjoy the river views while eating takeaways and take in the atmosphere. Contact Cammy on 082 498 2848 or the landline 043-722 7146.

Footprints Cafe With a good all-round menu (including kiddies and vegetarians), Footprints Café is a great place for lunches, drinks, sundowners and party events. There’s a full bar, conferencing venue and staff are helpful under the watchful eye of Brian Heathcote. Contact Footprints Café on 043-722 0056, 083 984 6379 or footprintscafe@gmail.com

The Velvet Jazz Lounge

This classy venue with its wide deck overlooking the river is aptly named with its trendy décor, cool sounds and atmospheric setting.

There’s a resident DJ – the Jazz master – to keep you entertained no matter whether it’s a relaxing drink after a long hard week or that special birthday party or event you’ve planned for months. Look out for their monthly over 30s parties as well. Facilities include a seating capacity of 180 or 300 (auditorium style), a great sound system and a full bar, explained Denash Gonda. Contact them on 043-722 1076, Denash on 082 601 2995 or Alfredo on 084 729 8162 or follow them on Facebook.

Riverine advent ures

Leander Rowing Club If doubles, quads, octals and sculls are your thing then head across the Buffalo River and get yourself to the rowing community centred around the Leander Rowing Club on the west bank. Three clubs (two schools and Leander) share the

facility explains club President Dave Hartwanger with an umbrella body managing the interest of all three bodies. Home to the Buffalo (the 128th was held in February this year) and the Selborne (56th in 2015) Regattas, the clubhouse boasts spectacular river views and punters can enjoy

19

the call of resident Fish Eagles when enjoying a post rowing drink on the club’s expansive deck. For the past year the Club have been developing what they call a Novice Programme to cater for those who want to try their hand at the sport over a 10-week course. If it’s not for you, one can walk away but if the bug bites – then one can consider joining the club with a number of membership options available. “We wanted to create a standard and structured programme to introduce people to rowing which consists of a single two-hour session per week,” says Dave. Three training boats are available with a larger vessel for rowing in groups nearing completion as “people want to row in groups, they feel safer and more secure,” added Dave. The initiative, which Dave describes as a work in progress, is an innovative way of catering for people who are intimidated by highend elite racing craft, people who just want to enjoy getting out on the water. “It’s a way of cultivating a more social side to the sport,” says Dave. Interested in trying your hand, joining the club or hiring the venue: Contact Leander Rowing Club through Dave (076 733 6480), the Club Captain, Kurt van Aardt (071 604 5069) or leander@leander.co.za or on the Web http://lean606.wix.com/ leander

Blue Horizon Marine Academy

Miscellaneous sights

If you’re looking to comply with legal skipper requirements, look no further than the Blue Horizon Marine Academy for courses accredited by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). Legally, any craft over three metres and over 15 horsepower will require a skippers’ ticket and this includes inland waters such as dams and rivers. Sea going licenses are also catered for. Don’t be tempted to bypass this requirement, our coastal waters are not called the Wild Coast for nothing, get proper training to equip yourself to deal with all situations. The price of courses ranges from R1000-R1500. Contact the Blue Horizon Marine Academy: Glenda Wakeford on 083-303-7652.

One of the most worthy of causes, the NSRI plays a vital role in assisting with emergencies on our coastline. If you’re interested in volunteering and/or training the Leading Lights Academy at NSRI Station 7 offers training. You will find them on the east bank, turn a sharp right at the Latimer’s Landing harbour entrance, cross the railway line and you will find them just before the Sea Spirit Fish Market. The gate will open automatically. Contact Jeff on 082 990 5972.

Sailing courses: Contact John Barry on 082 938 6275.
