When do age-related vision changes occur? Presbyopia. After you pass the milestone age of 40, you'll notice it's more difficult to focus on objects up close because of presbyopia. This is a perfectly normal loss of focusing ability due to hardening of the lens inside your eye. For a time, you can compensate for this gradual decline in focusing ability by holding reading material farther away from your eyes. But eventually you will need reading glasses, progressive lenses or multifocal contact lenses. Let us help you with your special visual needs.

Mountian biking around East London

Chicken Farm Trail extension now open

adventurous riders. Once on the track you can do as many loops as your legs will stand.

So close to East London surburbia that you can ride / or run from home, the trail is mostly single track and winds its way through the Floradale Nursery farm, starting at Café du Jardin and following a 6 or 8km loop, through steep valleys, small forests and around beautiful dams. It starts off with a short blood pumping pump track which leads straight on to the bush trail.

There is a trail usage fee of R10 per person which can be popped into the honesty box outside Café du Jardin during the week. This fee is R20 on weekends. A special yearly membership and track fee applies for all riders who belong to the Funtracks Mountain Bike Club.

hether it’s for a quick early morning run or ride, a lunch-time endorphine fix or a fun family hike, visit the Mountain Bike Track and Trail route at Floradale Nursery.

It’s a tight course and not for fainthearted cyclists as there are a few tricky drop-offs and small river crossings and some climbs which should get the heart pumping. However for the views out over Beacon Bay, it is all worth it. An A (red arrows) route for racing snakes and a B route (blue arrows) for the weekend warrior divides the track in places. The latest addition is the Chicken Farm Trail which has recently been completed and adds another 6km to the ride. A small common path joins the two tracks. This part of the ride winds its way through the farm and then drops down into a forested path, over bridges, and leads onto some hectic technical loops for the

The trail is also great for birders with pintailed whydahs, red-billed woodhoopoes and even fish eagles spotted at the dams.

Perfect for after exercise, Café du Jardin offers breakfast, lunch and everything in-between, where you can sit under a beautiful jade vine canopy and dine alfresco. Breakfast is the full range from a full English, to croissants, eggs Benedict and Florentine to light lunches, burgers and delicious snack platters as well as pizza and pasta specials. It is fully licensed for those lazy afternoon G&Ts or an ice cold frosty or sauvignon blanc. The delicious cakes are baked fresh on the premises daily and the coffee is freshly ground from the finest beans. The onsite jungle gym and sand pit keeps kids’ entertained while parents relax. The venue can be hired for private parties and nighttime functions are held under the lit canopy.

WHAT’S ON MOTORING by Gerry Gericke

W

Second generation Suzuki Ertiga launched

e were extremely fortunate inasmuch that Suzuki chose East London for the launch of their first 7-seater MPV family vehicle during June 2014. East London is a tad off the beaten track, so we welcome any Motor Manufacturer with open arms and are very grateful to Suzuki for using our most beautiful coast for the launch. The launch of the second generation Ertiga was held in Central Johannesburg and was based on a Quiz like exercise linking all the major tourist sightseeing parts of the city. The urban route demonstrated the ability of the all-new 1,5 litre engine to travel through rather congested traffic conditions with ease and minimum effort. The new Ertiga has been stretched in length by 130mm with the width increased by 40mm. The roof has been lifted by 5mm to accommodate tall occupants. The turning circle is unchanged at 5,2 metres. The interior has also been revised with more supportive seats, thanks to a new spring design whilst the second and third row seats can be folded flat to provide place for 2,820-metre-long objects with the front passenger seat also folded flat. The middle row of seats has also been designed to tilt assisting easy ingress and egress. Inside, the steering wheel has satellite controls to operate the sound system. A full trip computer monitoring fuel consumption, range etc. is also provided along

Photo: Carsales.com

with all the usual storage bins and USB sockets to make travelling a pleasure. Safety is also a prime consideration, with side impact door beams and dual front airbags. The five speed gearbox is slick and smooth providing the correct ratios for the vehicle. Inside the cabin there is a distinct lack of engine and road noise, all being well insulated. Brakes have been upgraded to provide for the extra weight of a full load and are adequate. LIKES: Build quality and space. Versatile engine. Air-conditioning for rear passengers situated above your head with outlets in the roof. Very quiet cabin. DISLIKES: Minimum legroom for passengers. VERDICT: Suzuki is fast becoming a major player on South African roads thanks to its quality and reliability. This new model has already proved itself overseas and will no doubt be a hit in South Africa. The Ertiga will be a direct competitor against the Toyota Avanza, which is rear wheel driven resulting in a transmission tunnel to house the prop shaft impeding foot space. The other competitor is the Nissan Livina. Both these competitors are more expensive than the Suzuki. We were really impressed with the Ertiga which is built on the platform of the Suzuki Swift and inherits the saloon car’s brilliant handling with aplomb. The Ertiga is available in 3 models, either GA or GL 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic.
