Art Bonsai of

S

o, a friend gave you a bonsai for your birthday ‌ or you have seen them and feel inspired to cultivate one your own - where to from here?

A bonsai tree is a unique combination of horticulture and art and is unlike any other potted plant gift you can find on the market. In Japanese the word bonsai simply means plant in a tray, but this little treasure is much more than that. While it does take some meticulous care and pruning, a bonsai can grow to become a very special feature of your home. So where does one start? Although bonsai can be very daunting to newcomers, in reality it is as simple as you make it. One can buy a bonsai from a garden centre or shopping mall, or collect a wild plant, best done in early spring. If buying a tree, be careful not to make the mistake of choosing a struggling/stunted tree and putting it straight into a bonsai pot. There are many species and varieties of trees available to grow and many new techniques that can be learnt to improve bonsai appearance, but the most important aspect as a beginner is to learn how to simply maintain the shape of your tree and keep it alive. Bonsai are neither stunted nor deformed, nor are they starved or deprived of water! In fact they need the right supply of water, air, light and nutrients. Important aspects of bonsai care include:

1. Light

Most outdoor bonsai trees need sunlight for at least a few hours a day. Their internodes and leaves will grow too large otherwise and will then be prone to pests and diseases. Most conifers should be placed in full sun for healthy growth. 2. Humidity On hot days and in a paved place surrounded by walls the trees can suffer from low humidity. You can increase humidity near your bonsai tree by placing it on a humidity tray filled with water and by misting your tree a few times a day. It also helps to wet the shelves, floors and walls around the trees. 3. Watering and fertilizing The most important rule is; never water on a routine. Monitor your tree and only water when needed. This can be once in three days or several times a day, depending on the weather, species and size. 4. Temperature Outdoor trees can endure high temperatures as well as very cold weather if they are cared for properly. It is important to provide protection from strong frost in winter. In spring, when the new leaves emerge, take care that the trees are protected even from light night frost. Patience is a virtue. One of the most important aspects of bonsai cultivation is embracing the learning curve and leaving room

for trial and error. Every tree has its own share of faults, so it’s vital that bonsai growers research how they want their trees to turn out after the growing process. Many trees don’t start out looking very attractive, but through perseverance and following the advice of bonsai growers around the world, a bonsai can turn into a showpiece for the home. There is a lot of information on the internet to get an enthusiast started but knowledge shared and gained by belonging to a club is invaluable. Some of the benefits include: •

Beginners course

Going on field trips to collect suitable material for bonsai

Demonstrations by experienced members

Workshops where you can get help and advice

Specialist tools and pots available in our club shop

The Bonsai club welcomes all, irrespective of experience or knowledge. There is a demonstration and a workshop every month. For more info www.borderbonsaisociety.blogspot.com Our annual show will be held at Pioneer Nursery from 1-9 November. There will be two exhibits of members’ trees and over the weekends there will be demonstrations to watch. Anyone is welcome to contact Victoria for questions or queries 082 318 9255.

5 signs you’re

sleep deprived 1. You fall asleep the minute your head hits the pillow. You might think this means you don’t have a problem with sleep, but the opposite is true: you need more sleep. 2. You’re more impulsive than usual. The area of your brain associated with judgement, impulse control and attention is affected by lack of sleep. 3. You’re more hungry than usual. Sleep deprivation can upset the hormones that tell us when we’re full (leptin) and when we’re hungry (ghrelin)so we eat more – and don’t stop when we’re full. 4. You’re being clumsy. Too little sleep can cause problems with motor skills. 5. You’re forgetting things. Sleep allows us to consolidate memories and so without enough of it, it’s more difficult to form memories.

’s Handel FANS of classical music are in for a treat with the revival of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Orchestra. The orchestra will be performing Handel’s Messiah on 20 November at The Guild Theatre. Richard Lento, East London strings teacher and accomplished pianist, said the idea to revive the orchestra was driven by a passion for classical music and a desire to see a local orchestra take to the stage and be a pride and a credit to the city. The orchestra is composed

of around 20 to 30 musicians, many from the schools where Lento teaches (Hudson, Cambridge and Legends School of Music), and also from his pupils taught at an individual level, or from musicians outside of these spheres. According to online promotional material, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Orchestra started a few years ago. The idea came as a result of a few strings that wanted to be involved in an orchestra so that at least they had an idea of what was expected of them when they finished matric.

In other words, while Lento teaches strings, the orchestra is a good way for these pupils to experience how their playing and their instrument fits in to the symphony of sound. The symphony the orchestra will perform dates back to 1741, and was composed by George Frideric Handel. Inspired by scripture, Messiah has become one of the best known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Lento said his vision for the orchestra was that it would grow

from strength to strength, and become a place where local musicians could find a musical home, on a par with the orchestras found in other cities like Durban and Johannesburg. •

Watch the newly revived Buffalo City Metropolitan Orchestra perform at The Guild on 20 November at 7pm. Tickets are R100 each. Contact The Guild on 043-743-0704/5 for bookings, or book at Computicket at www. computicket.co.za.

ou never know when one day you may need a blood transfusion. Accidents happen so quickly. Or perhaps you may not need blood but your grandmother will, or your newborn baby nephew, or your best friend. A unit of blood can save up to three lives, and it is often vulnerable patients like babies or cancer sufferers who benefit the most. Being scared of the needle is natural, but in overcoming that fear and donating regularly you can enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being a part of the group of South Africans who support the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the vital service they provide. There is always a high demand for blood, and this need spikes periodically – for example over festive weekends when there is a higher incidence of accidents on our roads, or over holidays when regular donors may be away. The more South African who make a commitment to donate “safe” blood, the better. Who can donate? This is the criteria: • You must weigh at least 50kg; 52

• Be between 16 and 65 years of age; • Be in good health; • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle; and • Consider your blood safe for transfusion. The donation process itself really doesn’t take a long time. A questionnaire must be filled out, your iron levels are checked, and then you are hooked up to the needle and blood sack. Once the unit has been given, you are encouraged to relax a little and enjoy some juice and a biscuit to avoid light-headedness, before you can be on your merry way. In East London, blood donation can be given in between shopping at places like Retail Park, or at the SANBS building in Pearce Street, Berea. Mobile units make their way to businesses, and are often set up in busy places, like Vincent Park Centre or at local festivals. Giving blood is the easiest way to be a hero. To find out more about giving blood in East London, contact Border Blood Bank PR Rene Vice on 043-704-8216 or rene. vice@sanbs.org.za.* Information sourced from www.sanbs.org.za
