A history of the

greater Nahoon area your chance to get on board

D

id you know that Nahoon once had its own private bus service? The service owned by Mr. Young, offered buses only every two hours as Nahoon was considered somewhat remote. In fact the municipal bus route went only as far as Berea thus providing Young with a solid public transport business opportunity. In the late forties however Nahoon grew rapidly as returning servicemen got good deals on land - traffic flows therefore increased. Although Beach Road remained relatively narrow and poorly developed, the municipality, never missing an opportunity to make a buck, deployed a traffic officer, Mr English who ‘nabbed’ those that failed to stop at the intersection of Beach and Old Transkei roads. If you are interested in these little-known stories and other ideas in which Nahoon became to symbolise fun and a sense of place in otherwise difficult social and political circumstances, you should make sure to pre-order a copy of Fighting and Fun at Nahoon. This locally written and published book will appear in limited editions available mainly to the people and businesses of Nahoon. Author Glenn Hollands is a Nahoon local and has previously published The Reef - A Legacy of Surfing in East London. It will make a very unusual corporate gift, an ideal local interest book for guest houses and an excellent Christmas present.

Fighting and Fun at Nahoon may be pre-ordered through Glenn Hollands – glenhol@telkomsa.net. The cost of the book is R200. Pre-ordering will ensure that final production stage of this unique book on local history. 18

T

he Border German Shepherd Dog Club and All Breeds Training School was started in March 1962 and soon grew into a vibrant and exciting club. The focus has changed a little over the years as training methods have changed and the emphasis on competition has faded to some extent. People are looking more to domestic obedience and fun activities with their dogs and we at the club strive to lead by example and provide a positive and nurturing environment in which we can grow and learn with our dogs. We use positive reinforcement methods which motivate the dogs. The club offers puppy socialisation, a 12-week course for elementary beginners, the Canine Good Citizen programme (which will ensure

the gift of training that you have a dog that is well behaved both at home and on the beach). Other facilities that the club can offer are a fully-qualified Animal Behaviourist who can help you with your problems with your dog, Learn how to go tracking with your dog and take part in companion dog training, which is great fun and exercises your dog’s mind. KUSA-sanctioned Open and Championship Shows featuring obedience, working trials and tracking are held on a regular basis. Training takes place at the Clubhouse in James Pearce Park on a Sunday morning, with puppy socialisation on a Tuesday evening at the same venue. For further information contact Shirley on 082 342 8939 or Jenny on 082 468 2186. The Border Dog Club is the only KUSA affiliated dog training club in East London.
