A

friend of mine recently moved back to East London after spending about 30 years living in Cape Town. Although she visited East London often during that time, living here again has been an adjustment. And not in a negative way!! She can’t stop talking about how long a tank of fuel lasts and how everything is literally within a 15min driving radius from her house. The fun thing for me is to experience our city through someone else’s eyes for a change. To get excited about the little gems our city has to offer and to explore forgotten places. It is a sad fact of life that we often get so completely wrapped up in our own worlds that we don’t notice exciting things around us anymore. Little things like watching a ship come into port from the short pier ... the ship so close you can almost touch it. Or taking a slow drive over the weekend to some of the coastal villages on both sides of our city. We are well and truly blessed with spec-

tacular beaches and rivers, abundant wildlife, luxurious as well as family friendly and affordable resorts on our doorstep. In this month’s edition we focus a little on accommodation and adventure activities in the Grahamstown area. Once again the month is packed with interesting / fun / informative events and you will find a comprehensive list from p44 - p52. FYI, event listings are free of charge, so please send any event-related info to us on admin@thewhatson.co.za and we’ll publish it. This month sees the Pam Golding Gardens of East London charity event, it is Oktoberfest time, the Beacon Bay Retail Park Kids Market Day challenge is on 17 October and Jennifer Rush is finally here! Also see on page 14 how you can win great prizes with the Buffalo Selfie Competition. And lastly ... good luck to all our Grade 12 learners with their upcoming final exams! Should you wish to advertise with us, please contact Rentia on 079 594 2267 or Tirsa on 043 735 2059.

ADVERTORIAL

Cape Town duo launches innovative impact grip for smartphones

J

ust picture it. You get home from a long day at work, climb out of your car and hear the heart-stopping sound you never want to hear – your phone… making contact with the tarmac. Your breathing stops, your blood runs cold and the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Your phone is lying face down and you just can’t know the extent of the damage until you slowly, painfully pick it up and turn it over. Enter the latest tech accessory to bounce out of Cape Town. Just-inCase, a specially designed smartphone impact grip is the simple, easy, colourful answer to smartphone protection. Because, let’s face it, you choose your smartphone for its brain and beauty. You don’t really want to conceal it with just any phone cover, but you also can’t risk it going without protection! Developed by local gadget development company, TNKR, Just-in-Case was launched just a few short months ago, and has taken the local smartphone 16

accessory market by storm. “We’re all about coming up with innovative new products and rethinking old ones to make people’s lives easier. Just-in-Case is our very first innovation and people love it! It turns a simple, existing concept on its head and offers something completely new!” says Carl Nieuwoudt of TNKR. Just-in-Case is a specially developed Monprene smartphone impact grip that stretches onto any standard smartphone. It adds bounce and can absorb the impact of a fall from 1.2 metres onto a flat surface, so your smartphone doesn’t have to. It also adds grip, which means your smartphone is less likely to slip out of your hands – or across your dashboard – and its patented corner spheres give your device the elevation it needs to avoid damage from liquid spills. It comes in a rainbow range of colours and with an affordable price tag, which means, ladies and gents, that you can mix and match the grips according to your mood, outfit, or the weather.

So whether you’re heading off to a big corporate meeting, taking your boisterous dogs for a walk, or partying up a storm in

town, make Just-in-Case your essential smartphone companion – for fun, for colour, for peace of mind... Just-In-Case.

Where can I get my Just-in-Case? Get your Just-in-Case from TNKR’s online store at www.tnkr.co.za. Order three or more and get free delivery to anywhere in South Africa. Also available at Takealot.com. Email: carl@tnkr.co.za Web: www.tnkr.co.za

Three lucky readers can each win a JUST-IN-CASE SMARTPHONE IMPACT COVER. SMS/Whatsapp your answer and your name to 083 388 9517 or mail to whatsonwin@gmail.com by 23 OCTOBER 2015 at 12 noon. Winners will be notified and posted on facebook. QUESTION: From where can one order JUST-IN-CASE smartphone covers?

An

artist’s garden

T

he first weekend in October brings the longawaited “Gardens of East London” show - the fifth since this initiative, which sees local charities benefitting from donations from members of the public, was launched by Hanlie Bassingthwaighte of Pam Golding Properties in 2011. The What’s On team paid a visit to the garden which blew everyone away last year and promises to do the same this year – the Bonnie Doon garden of Dr. Wessel Strydom.

It is hard to believe that it took only one year to create this fabulous artist’s garden – a year in which the site was transformed from an impossibly steep rubble dumping ground to a jaw-dropping work of art. Still impossibly steep, of course, but now completely accessible through a network of paths and stairs which allow one to explore every corner of the property. Nine months of the year were spent doing the structural work - building retaining walls, paths and stairways –

18

leaving only three months to do the actual planting. It’s only when Strydom starts mentioning numbers that one realises the enormity of the task undertaken by this creative and capable man. Trenches two meters deep, dug by hand. Twelve tons of concrete delivered to the trenches by thirty previously unemployed men using wheelbarrows and a system of ramps and slides which Strydom himself ingeniously devised and built. Retaining walls, five meters high, built using nine thousand retainer blocks, each weighing 25kg, carried and carefully placed using manpower and ropes. Walls clad in stone dug from the rubble. And before the planting could start, one hundred tons of topsoil. Here again Strydom gave wings to his artistic side, designing his garden as a series of rooms inspired by his travels. There is a room reminiscent of the Free State, where Strydom grew up. A tropical garden hints at his travels in

the Amazon and a crystal forest (complete with fairies, I’m sure) is inspired by the forests of Ireland. A blue garden is based on the Majorelle Gardens in Morocco and a formal garden hints at the temple gardens of Indonesia. And then there’s the artwork! Last year we saw, amongst others, sculptures inspired by the famous Mud Maid of Helligan and the towers of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Arches serve as an ode to Roman Architecture. Also eye-catching was Strydom’s own take on The Burghers of Calais. During last

year’s show visitors were asked to suggest a title for this sculpture. This year Strydom has another idea for some interactive participation. It’s really all too much to describe. This garden needs to be experienced. Maybe even twice! Seriously, don’t miss it. Go on Saturday 3 October, because you will want to return the next day. One can only wonder what he has in store for us next year.

TUSKERS LODGE 24

Glen Boyd Lodge

Glen Boyd was established in 1858 after the first of the Frontier Wars. The Lodge is situated in the gardens of the historical Glen Boyd homestead. The Glen Boyd gardens are an arboreal delight, with ancient Jacarandas said to be the tallest in South Africa. The lodge overlooks the fields teeming with game, including White Rhino and Cape buffalo. 6 luxury en-suite chalets overlook the ravine. The dining room overlooks the swimming pool and tennis court. The main dwelling is beautifully restored to its former glory, high Pewter Ceilings and original wood work. Tented Camp: The Tented Camp overlooks the

Glen Boyd Dam. This unique setting blends in with the surrounding bush and is ideal for catching a few fish in the evening after a great day of game drives, game viewing, etc. 6 colonial tents under thatch and connected by wooden paths offer a unique environment for those wishing to experience something different. The spacious bar and dining room offers a great social area. We do cater for end of year functions and the farm makes for a beautiful wedding venue.
