S

o ... we just need to get through the next two months and then it is all downhill to summer!! I do enjoy a bit of cold though, so the gas bottles are filled, the wood is stacked and the gluwein waiting to be warmed up. Speaking of gluwein, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown is upon us and many East Londoners will make their way to Grahamstown. Safe travels and enjoy the festival! July is also the month for the Washie, a gruelling 100 mile (160 km) run from Port Alfred to East London. Starting at 5pm from the Halyards Hotel, these brave men and women run through the night, with the full moon lighting the way. Oh and speaking of full moon, we’ll have two of them in July; 2nd of July and 31st of July (blue moon). The month is jam-packed with happenings, from Joan Armitrading performing at Hemingways, to the Hogsback Xmas in July Winter Fest. There’s a Parent & Child Expo hosted by Beacon Bay Crossing and a breakfast fun run hosted by Beacon Bay Retail Park. The Alliance Francaise goes all French with their Tour De Force Bike Race at 3 Silos. Sounds like a lot of fun!! Chris Chameleon is performing at the Guild Theatre as part of the theatre’s “The Show Must Go On” campaign. Please help the Guild in their fundraising campaign. Oh and last but not least, we will all pitch in on 18 July with our 67 minutes for Madiba! Once again we have cool giveaways, thanks to all who sponsored this. Please see the events diary from page 45 onwards for lots more. Should you wish to advertise with us, please contact Rentia on 079 594 2267 or Tirsa on 043 735 2059. Enjoy what East London has to offer this month and send us any event-related info. We will publish it free of charge.

Craft your own

A

t the foot of the grand Outeniqua Mountains in the heart of the Garden Route lives Luigi Marucchi, master craftsman and luthier extraordinaire. In his well-equipped workshop at his home in George hang violins and guitars in various phases of completion. Luigi’s journey started as a young boy with a simple love of wood and woodworking. He taught woodwork for a while, and then branched into making custom furniture on a fulltime basis. But then another bug bit. “While my furniture business was paying the bills, my heart has always been with instruments”, he says. In 2000 he went on a violin-making course and since then he has been creating stringed instruments. A visit to Cremona in Italy was a source of inspiration, says Luigi. “There are a hundred and fifty registered instrument makers making a living in this tiny town. The quality of the instruments is astounding. I just kept thinking that I want to do this fulltime and not just as a hobby.” Realising that handmade violins were never going to sell to the masses in South

18

Africa, Luigi turned his hand to guitar making. After the complexities of the violin, guitars were quicker to make and much more fun. “I also realised that, with some additional equipment, specially shaped frames, the right materials and some hands-on guidance, it could be possible for almost anyone to make a guitar.” And so Luigi set about designing a course – not a kit, but a course. Students are required to cut, sand, glue and varnish all the bits and pieces. The saddle and bridge are made of bone, frets are cut and inserted, and mother of pearl dots and a rosette are in-laid. “In fact, the only things they won’t be making are the strings, tuners and fret wire.” The wood used is traditionally some of the best tone woods used in guitar making. The soundboard is Spruce, the back and sides are Indian Rosewood and the neck is made from Mahogany. Students may choose from three basic shapes of guitar: a Grand Classic (with more curve in the centre bout and very responsive to a light touch), a Dreadnaught (with a larger sound box and a more assertive sound) and a nylonstringed Classical. A maximum of three students are admitted to a course,

splendid guitar ensuring individual attention. Everything you will need in order to complete your instrument is included: all timber, tone wood, strings, machine heads, the nut and saddle, side dots, bindings, sound hole inlays, truss rod and a hard case. The course consists of sixteen full days in the workshop. Here, from the humble beginnings of the raw wood,

you will build an acoustic guitar – each step guided and explained to allow you to create a quality instrument, complete with personalised name on the headstock. For more information on this wonderful course visit the website at www.guitarmaking. co.za. Alternatively you may contact Luigi on 083 286 1803 or email him on luigi@ guitarmaking.co.za.

Every garden needs a

lemon tree

L

emons are the most popular of all the fruit trees that are sold in SA today. One of the most versatile fruit used by many almost every day, they are incredibly easy to grow, so we think every garden should have one. Being well suited to growing in containers they also work well on patios or balconies and as they are self pollinating you only need one tree to provide your own lemons. Lemons set their fruit through early summer after a spring flowering and are ready to harvest from mid winter. They stay fresh on the tree for months which means that as they mature one can have a steady supply of fruit for most of the year. Selecting your lemon tree: There are a few lemons that grow well in our local area. Spring and early summer is the best time to plant your tree. One of the most popular is Lemon Eureka; a smooth skin lemon which is a good for juice and the tree bears the most fruit of all the varieties in the garden. The Cape Rough Skin Lemon has a thick rind which makes it good for cooking. The Meyer Lemon has also been popular as it has a larger fruit, is juicy and has a good rind. New on the market in SA since 2014 is the Genoa Lemon - A Delicious

and cold hardy lemon. This lemon tree grows in a shrub-like form and it grows wide rather than tall, making it quite easy to harvest these delicious lemons. Its size also makes it ideal for container planting. Where to plant: All lemons need a well drained soil to grow well. Water your lemon tree well once a week to every ten days. If it looks like your soil might be a problem rather opt for a container. When selecting a container ideally select a pot that is more than 40cm in height and diameter. Your tree must have the most sun you can give it. Full sun is the best but some shade in the day is not a problem. If your tree gets more shade one gets less fruit and the tree can also be more susceptible to disease. Feeding: Lemon trees are very hungry and need regular feeding. The most important time of the year to feed them is late winter through spring with a high nitrogen fertiliser. Feeding them with the organic fertiliser, Sudden Impact for Flowers will give them the nitrogen they need as well as the potassium to stimulate flowering which will lead to a good harvest.

JULY EVENTS DIRECTORY Stage of the National Arts Festival, and created by the world- renowned Dutch puppet theatre company, Speeltheater Holland Studio. Red Earth Revisited plays at the Guild Theatre, East London for 4 performances only on 20-21 July. Drawing on actors from South Africa and the Netherlands, Red Earth Revisited is a lively and engaging piece of visual storytelling featuring magical puppetry and song, created by one of Netherlands’ leading theatre companies, led by the husband and wife team, Onny Huisink and Saskia Janse. The innovative sets and puppets have been devised for the production by Onny Huisink, in collaboration with Keiskamma Art Project from Hamburg. Red Earth Revisited recreates the legendary story of Nongqawuse, the young girl who prophesied that the Xhosa would be rid of their enemies if they killed their cattle and burned their grain. A migratory stork is the narrator in this vibrant revisiting of the story to determine if she really was the cause of the disaster that ensued… Audiences will be fascinated to discover the “bird’s eye view” of events that this stork with homes in both hemispheres is able to offer. The production features powerful performances from Macebo Mavuso, Thami Mbongo and Roshina Ratnam, highly experienced and skilled performers and puppeteers. 20 July: 11am and 7pm; 21 July: 9am and 12pm. We are very excited to present this new work. The exhibition will open to the public from the 17th July, 2015. Sunday opening times: by appointment ANN BRYANT MAIN GALLERY: Sonwabiso Ngcai's Masters: Fine Art through VUT Sonwabiso Ngcai a master’s degree student studying through UNISA will be exhibiting his final dissertation in the main gallery of the Ann Bryant. Dr John Steele is co-supervising Sonwabiso Ngcai's Masters: Fine Art degree who is working separately from the group who are studying through UNISA. Close on Thursday 9th July 2015. Xhosa twins: Sonwabiso explains, “My works explore myths, beliefs and ritual practices relating to birth, life and death of Xhosa twins. In working on the con-

cept of twins I have created installation type sculptures wherein I look at notions of connectedness, duality, multiplicity and mirroring. This approach, which is inspired by a British sculptor Antony Gormely, relates to the fact that my work has always been in the form of multiple components because of multiplicity being such an important part of my life because of my own experience of being a twin. The fact that I am a multiple product of my mother goes hand in hand with my creative style and the idea of multiples and multiplicity. My works are created with clay as a main medium, to which are incorporated found objects, thereby forming both abstract and realistic images of varying scale, just as variation occurs in fraternal and identical twins, as well as in triplets. The broader thematic context of my work also alludes to a heightened sensitivity to the idea of cultural prescriptions, social behaviour and concepts of identity which are prevalent among societies that attach metaphysical ideas to the notion of twins and conformities. Born as a twin into a rural Xhosa community I have experienced some unusual practices during my upbringing. In the artworks I have tried to create awareness on how culture and identity can mould an individual. My works also add significantly to the body of knowledge about local ritual practices and Xhosa Indigenous Knowledge Systems to do with twins.” GERMAN SETTLER MONUMENT EXHIBITION is on display in the main gallery until 20 August 2015. Between the years 1856 and 1860 and later in the 1870s, some 7000 German settlers arrived in the Eastern Cape. These people, noted for their hard work and industry while facing many hardships, made new lives for themselves and their descendants. Entitled DEN DEUTSCHEN EINWAN-

DEREN, the memorial, designed by architect, Jack Marsden, had two parts. The one was a granite stone figure group, created by the noted South African sculptor, Lippy Lipshitz, which stands in a commanding position on the East London beachfront. It was unveiled in 1960. The other part consisted of five plaques set into a wall, which depicted scenes from the lives of the settlers. The bronze reliefs were designed and made by the German sculptor, Bodo Kampmann and were unveiled in September 1961 by Mr O.E. Heipertz, the West German consul. The bronze plaques have since been stolen, it is then that Former Director of the East London museum Dr Gillian Vernon teamed up with Darby Gounden

of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality's International Relations department and with the aid of local artists through the Friends of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery ran a competition to design the artwork. Mr John Kingsley-Hall won the competition having the most historically correct design. The design were then turned into mosaics and were installed by a Cape Town based company Mosaic works headed by Jacqueline black. The mosaic installation was funding by the German Consulate. These mosaics can be viewed at the gallery in the form of pictures or can be seen at the actual monument itself. PERMANENT COLLECTION On view until 20 August 2015.
