Connecting with your community

For the greater good!

Giving can go a long way. The feeling someone can get by helping someone else in just the slightest way can improve your own life and attitude. Volunteering for a cause can bring you life-long friends who you may not have ever met if you hadn’t become involved. We’ve looked at seven different charities in our January edition and this month we have four more, all very worthy causes in need of your help.

Furever Fixed AnimAl rescue is primarily a sterilization organization. Our main focus is to sterilize as many strays as possible. We rescue and rehome kittens with a sterilization policy to ensure no future breeding. Our main need is funds or items for us to auction, Sterilizations: Amy 079 696 2626 Adopt a Kitten: Amber 071 293 3063 as each sterilization costs R800 and we average Furever Homes - east london 25 sterilizations a week.

Kitesurfers wax lyrical about the rush of harnessing the wind and ripping along the water before being scooped skywards then sinking into the surf. They say nothing compares with the power and thrill of a good session at sea. It comes pretty close to flying.

If 2019 signals the start of your kitesurfing quest, pick a day when the north-east is pumping and head down to Nahoon beach to chat to the men and women who are about to launch or are packing their kite bags after ripping the waves.

If you want to spring off the sidelines and ignite some personal bliss, East London is the place to do it. With strong north-east winds prevailing between September and March the city’s beaches are a playground for both local and visiting kite surfers, especially on the incoming tide. The gear is lightweight and can be popped into the boot. Experts say technological advances allow for easier to control, so go out and harness some freedom!

WHAT’S ON MOTORING

ALL NEW SANTA FE BY HYUNDAI

Value all the way! By Gerry Gericke. SAGMJ yundai has just launched its 4th Generation Flagship: the all new Santa Fe which was first launched in 2001 which was the Korean Manufacturer’s first SUV. I have to strongly disagree with some motoring scribe who compares the Santa Fe to the Toyota Fortuner which dominates the segment. There is no comparison between the two marques as the Hyundai is far superior to the rigid rear axle suspension of the antiquated Toyota. The Santa Fe is packed with every conceivable feature to make family motoring an absolute pleasure. It is time that the motoring public recognised the fact that Hyundai means “Quality,” providing one of the best warrantees across the spectrum. The 2018 Sante Fe is all new with regard to its size which has grown quite substantially in length and breadth. Hyundai has retained the 2,2-litre diesel powerplant which means this will remain until they follow the rest of the world and go electric! One of the strong points of Hyundai is its new 8 speed automatic which replaces the previous 6 speed gearbox. The new gearbox swops cogs seamlessly or with the use of paddles on the steering column. The new gearbox also improves accel-

H

eration and fuel consumption dramatically. The 2,2 litre diesel engine has been retained across the three-model range and is the quietest powerplant we have encountered to date. Response from the engine is absolutely incredible. The launch route included some extremely corrugated gravel roads which the Sante Fe cruised without the semblance of a rattle or loss of direction. Driving the large Sante Fe creates the ambience of a saloon and not the feeling of a goanywhere family SUV. The Executive trim grade adds driver assist gadgets like Rear Cross Traffic Collision Avoidance (with auto-braking function), Blind Spot Detection as well as luxuries in the form of push-button start, electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, folding side mirrors and retractable rear door curtains. VERDICT: Probably one of the best SUVs on the market with regard to quality and the comprehensive list of features. Over and above all that, the Elite packs front park assist, a 17.8cm TFT digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate and steering-mounted paddle shifters. The range-topper also comes with an industry-first safety feature that can alert the driver if he or she forgets a child in the rear seat and tries to leave the car.

Chicken Burritos INGREDIENTS 1. 30ml olive oil 2. 4 spring onions, finely chopped 3. 1 red pepper, finely diced 4. 1 red chilli, finely diced (seeded) 5. 2 cloves garlic, crushed 6. 1 stick celery, finely diced 7. 5ml Robertsons Cumin 8. 15ml Robertsons Paprika 9. 200g long grained rice according to instructions on the packet, cooked and left cold for 2 hours or more. 10. zest and juice of 2 lemons 11. chicken and picked, Roasted and shredded 12. 1 x Chicken Stock Pot 13. 10ml bbq sauce 14. 4 large tortillas 15. 45ml coriander, chopped 16. 60g cheddar cheese, grated METHOD 1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan. Add the spring onions, peppers, chillies, garlic and celery. Cook on medium heat for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables start to soften but do not brown. 2. Add the Cumin and Paprika, mix well on medium heat. 3. Add the cooked rice, the lemon zest and lemon juice. Shake the pan well so that the rice and vegetables mix together really well. 4. In a separate bowl, mix the shredded chicken with the Chicken Stock Pot and BBQ sauce. 5. Heat the tortillas in a large dry frying pan on medium heat for 1-2 minutes until they soften up. 6. HEALTHIER FOR YOU TIPS: For added fibre switch the tortillas to wholewheat tortillas and use brown rice for the filling.
