FLY HIGH WITH BORDER AVIATION

I

f criss-crossing the skies at the controls of a sleek light aircraft is a cherished dream, Border Aviation can make it take off. The acclaimed flight school has been training pilots since the 1940s and can teach enthusiastic aviators how to fly everything from weightshift microlights to warbirds and historical aircraft. Not only does Border Aviation offer attentive, professional one-on-one training, it uniquely does so from three bases, depending on the instruction required: •

Instrument flight training takes place at the flight school’s East London Airport base;

Short field training is done from Wings Park and

Mountain flying is taught from the Queenspark Airfield.

Highly trained, patient and dedicated, Border Aviation staff carry out Ab-initio training in both Private Pilot License (PPL) and National Pilot License (NPL) and commercial pilot training. The flight school also offers conversion to type training, hour building for commercial students, renewals, spin training, short field landings and take-offs and Instrument Flight (IF) training.

Aircraft is also available on a ‘hire and fly’ basis. With 140 members on its books, the school, which was once the Border Aviation Club, now consists of engineers, airline pilots and a diverse of male and female students who share the common interest of flying and all things aircraft. Border Aviation’s hangars house an impressive fleet of magnificent flying machines including Cessna 150s, a Sling 2, a Piper Archer 181, a Mooney M20 and a Beechcraft Baron (BE58). For thrilling weekend flying, there is the light sport aircraft, the Savannah XL. A glance at photographs in Border Aviation’s offices show the exhilarated faces of students enjoying cockpit time. One shows beaming commercial pilot student Dylan Aldag building up his hours in the Cessna 150 alongside his equally stoked 83-year-old granny. At its heart, the non-profit organisation operates on the belief that a career in aviation promises adventure beyond every horizon. If you would like to find out more about flight training with Border Aviation, please see our advert on page 48 of this What’s On.

When do age-related vision changes occur? Presbyopia. After you pass the milestone age of 40, you'll notice it's more difficult to focus on objects up close because of presbyopia. This is a perfectly normal loss of focusing ability due to hardening of the lens inside your eye. For a time, you can compensate for this gradual decline in focusing ability by holding reading material farther away from your eyes. But eventually you will need reading glasses, progressive lenses or multifocal contact lenses. Let us help you with your special visual needs.

PARTY FOR A CAUSE Music Fest is a fundraiser in aid of Restore Trust. Restore Trust is celebrating its 10th anniversary as an NPO that was established in response to growing needs in Buffalo City. They have a heart to bring restoration of those in need by developing innovative responses to social problems, treating the people of our city with dignity and respect. When you buy your ticket you’ll be supporting the following: BREATH OF LIFE – Impacting the lives of women in crisis pregnancies and the destinies of the unborn. They provide an alternative for women, who otherwise would have chosen either termination or abandonment. This growing crisis demanded an urgent response and the Restore Trust launched two projects under Breath of Life to meet this need: Place of Safety – offering a loving home to abandoned

babies. To date they have cared for 140 babies. Crisis Pregnancy Centre – offering counselling in termination clinics and schools around East London, educating women of their choices. To date they have counselled over 21,000 women. RESTORE JOB CREATION – Creating a new future by restoring, reskilling and recycling. This is achieved through two projects: iThemba Second Take Shop – offering hope and dignity to the less fortunate by providing quality second hand products, ranging from baby clothes to roof sheeting, at affordable prices. Restore4Life – offering a training program which gives candidates, who have been through their discipleship course, the opportunity to learn a new skills which they can use to obtain employment.

WHAT’S ON MOTORING by Gerry Gericke

ALL NEW RANGE OF FORD RANGERS

F

ord is one of the largest Manufacturers of Motor vehicles on the planet and their commercial light vehicle range, which is the subject of this report, runs a close second to Toyota, the leaders in worldwide sales at the moment. This report will concentrate on two of the Double Cab models which we drove extensively on the launch in George recently, namely the XLT and the Wildtrak. The new Ranger will be available in five specification levels providing a wide choice to buyers. Ford Motor company of SA employ 4300 souls and buyers are assured of “Proudly South African” vehicles, as the Ranger is manufactured in Silverton Pretoria. We have had the privilege of a tour of this most impressive plant. Local content of the new

Ranger is as high as 40%. Ford exports its products to 148 countries amounting to some 168 000 vehicles. Although Toyota SA leads sales of Single Cab models, Ford Ranger at present leads the Double Cab Sector. The George area is perfect for testing an all-Terrain vehicle as it provides a large variety of gravel and tarred mountain passes and many challenging off-road excursions, up the many tracks to the summits of the beautiful mountain ranges in the vicinity. The Organisers of the launch took us up some of the most challenging tracks to the summit of the mountains, up ‘trails’ which can only be described as tracks littered with boulders, but the Ranger sneered at those obstacles and took them effortlessly

in its stride, idling up to the top some 3000ft above sea level. After conquering these incredible rough tracks the route crossed the famous Robinson Pass above Mossel Bay which proved just how competent the Double Cab Rangers handled the real twisty and undulating tar roads. In between we used plenty of loose gravel roads demonstrating the superb road manners on gravel aided by the electronic stability programme. The new Ranger is loaded with the latest technology found in most expensive saloons. One of the most impressive features was how very quiet it was in the cabin even while traversing very rough surfaces. This is achieved through the space age technology of “A noise cancelling device which actually removes engine and road noise. Another impressive feature is the all new 10 speed automatic gearbox which changes ratios seamlessly. Some of the latest technology includes radar preventing collisions, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist,

driver alert system. Auto high beam, rear view camera and a tailgate with lift assistance. Towing power has also been uprated along with a locking diff and hill descent control. The celebrated Ford SYNC communication system is still included. The security anti-theft system has also been uprated. VERDICT: The Ford Ranger is now available in 33 models making it the most extensive and complete range available in SA. Ford has been monitoring sales of Manual Gearbox versus Automatic Gearbox demand in SA, which found the market favouring the Auto ever more. the market is at last going off manual gearboxes. The Ford Ranger deserves its position at the top of the pile with its quality build and car-like drivability, this certainly explains why so many people are driving bakkies today in SA. LIKES: The new Ranger handles almost as well as an expensive saloon car on winding roads. DISLIKES: None. Probably the best bakkie we have ever driven!

Prices include a 4 year or 120,000 km warranty and a 6 year 90,000 km service plan.
