HOW TSO CERTIFICATION BENEFITS YOU Every feature in each Bose aviation headset has been carefully considered, engineered and refined to provide the greatest possible benefit to the pilot who wears it.

Meeting and exceeding the requirements of a TSO (Technical Standard Order) is one of those features. It’s far more than a regulatory box to check – it’s an important assurance that your headset is compatible with other equipment and has been rigorously tested to meet or exceed the demands of your flight environment.
CY
CMY
K
And while some aviation headset manufacturers claim they meet the standards outlined in the TSO, Bose is one of the few that actually pursues and receives the certification. Through this work, Bose affirms that our headsets are ready for and can endure the challenging operating conditions of the varied cockpit environments around the world. TSOs come from the Federal Aviation Administration. And like aircraft and pilot certification, TSO authorisation of aviation related equipment provides assurance from the FAA that the equipment has been tested and meets the basic standards set for the product category of aviation headsets. The FAA defines TSO as “a minimum performance standard for specified materials, parts and appliances used on civil aircraft.” Achieving TSO authorisation is not a simple or easy process, but it's one that brings real value to general aviation and professional pilots alike.
Before we offer a Bose aviation headset to the market, we ensure it can withstand the extremes of aviation – often far beyond what the FAA requires. In addition to FAA and EASA E/TSO standards, we perform our own tests to ensure Bose aviation headsets are safe, reliable and durable. We invest significantly in the engineering, manufacturing and testing process because doing so validates your own headset investment. Our headsets go through 145 separate tests. Through tests like extreme heat, electricity, explosive atmosphere testing, extended wear and many more, Bose affirms that each headset can endure the challenging operating conditions of cockpit environments around the world. By engineering our aviation headsets to meet and exceed TSO requirements, we bring pilots a more comfortable, durable and reliable product* that performs better for pilots flying all aircraft types, whether or not they’re required to use a TSO-certified headset. No matter what type of flying you do, peace of mind is important when you’re in the cockpit. Our own high standards, combined with the work required to achieve TSO certification, result in a headset that will stand up to the demands of your flying environment. Experience the ProFlight Series 2 Get to know the pilots who fly with the ProFlight Series 2. The ProFlight Series 2 is the lightest aviation headset Bose has ever produced, and when you’re putting in the hours required to become a professional pilot, comfort goes a long way. The pilot community is made up of people from all different backgrounds who fly all sorts of aircraft. But what unites us is the shared pursuit of becoming our best selves. These are the stories of pilots who strive to reach their potential – and then exceed it. Explore the stories below to learn about their unique experiences and how Bose is a part of their journey.
“I was always told, ‘You can tell a flight department is with the times depending on what headset they allow you to fly with.’ The first flight I ever did, I went with my director and I remember I got in the cockpit and looked over when he put on his ProFlight headset. It was such a cool feeling for me. I thought, ‘They get it. They are moving with the future!'” – Kim Kissh First Officer G550
“I am reliably listening to two or three frequencies at once in the 757. You have to listen to the ADS-B, actively be on the radio and listen to the captain. I need to make sure I can hear all of those things accurately in order to do the best job possible.” – Devan Anding Norris First Officer, B757, B767
“I think ultimately, it’s critical that equipment functions as it’s supposed to. It allows us to do our job and provide the safest and most dependable form of transportation there is.” – Menes Pierre-Pierre Captain, G650
“For someone to see a black person as a captain, I’m not the stereotypical person that you connect with flying a plane. I think representation matters a lot. You can be young, black, a woman, any minority; the airplane does not care who’s flying it.” – Timothy Karanja Captain, E170, E175 Connect with us @BoseAviation © 2022 Bose Corporation. Three Low-Cost Upgrades for your Pre-Owned Aircraft With the pre-owned business aircraft market having near-zero availability for some popular models currently, Dave Higdon shares some simple, low-cost upgrade ideas for breathing new life into some of the older inventory still available for sale…
I
n today’s pre-owned aircraft market, demand outweighs supply, making this a tight market for those wishing to break into business aircraft ownership. The current market dynamics also mean it can be difficult to find the ideal aircraft at a reasonable price. For would-be buyers who are flexible enough, there are some good options that could almost fit the bill. With a low-cost upgrade or two, these could in fact become the ideal airplane. Of course, the onus remains on the buyer to do due diligence before purchasing an aircraft to upgrade. The low-cost upgrades mentioned here assume that the aircraft isn’t due an engine overhaul anytime soon; that it already has any mandatory work (such as ADS-B compliance) installed; and that all Airworthiness Directives (ADs) are complied with.
1. IFR-GPS
Some jets and turboprops comply with a mandate, but the installed solution offers very little else, if anything. For example, the hardware installed may fulfill the need for a position source (ADS-B Out), but not for active navigation (ADS-B In). This could be a good time to revisit the options, replacing that position source with a true GPS navigator. More options exist today than a couple of years ago, and these new options deliver navigation and IFR approach capabilities. With the FAA eager to retire many expensiveto-maintain Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), and with an increasing number of IFR GPS approaches in the US (many of which offer greater utility, to more runway ends), replacing the data source-only GPS engine with a full navigator offers increased utility and, in most
cases, a graphic-display screen that serves as a Multi-Function Display (MFD). Less expensive than a full flight panel makeover, these newer options deliver more runway options, greater accuracy, and other desirable utilities for many older business aircraft, where the options simply didn't exist a couple of years ago.
2. Audio Panel System
Another low-cost improvement with functional utility for crew and passengers comes in the form of a modern audio panel system. There are several options available on the market, and improvements in audio quality is just the start of what a modern audio panel can offer. Choices could include stereo audio, dynamic audio (delivering differential audio), music inputs, and connections to video feeds, all of which can help give an older private aircraft’s cabin a boost with audio on a par with the newest business jets – all for a fraction of the cost.
3. Carpet, Brightworks & LEDs
When faced with a drab, gloomy cabin environment, it won’t always be necessary to spend on a full-cabin makeover. Budget solutions exist to give a candidate aircraft the look and aroma of brand new. Start at floorlevel, installing new carpeting where it’s needed, and work your way up to the overhead. New carpeting can dramatically enhance the all-important first impression the cabin gives. A change of carpet can open up options for colours and patterns that give a personalised feel (i.e. reflecting a corporation’s colours), and which are equal in look and feel to the carpets being installed into the cabins of today’s factorynew jets. Similarly, the polished appearance of new
buckles and brightworks can noticeably enhance the first-impressions given by the cabin. And, another low-cost upgrade to lift a lessthan-perfect cabin is LED lighting. The variety of colour options available suits just about every need and mood, while simultaneously reducing the load on the airplane’s electrical systems. Moreover, thanks to advances in LEDs, many of today’s options are literally plug-and-play to install. Carpet, brightworks, and LED lighting can combine to transform a previously tired, uninspiring cabin environment into an ideal place for occupants to work, rest and play en route, with no hint of the upgrade being done on a relative shoestring.
Avoiding Extravagance
Of course, once you begin delving into the literally hundreds of upgrade options, materials, and colours available on the market, it could be easy to lose focus and end up spending more than you originally intended to transform your ‘nearlyperfect’ acquisition into your ideal aircraft. It’s best right at the beginning of the process to make a list of what you’re willing to invest in upgrading and, having done so, to solicit bids from different MRO shops, helping to ensure the work is neither overpriced, nor so cheap that the quality suffers and you regret making the upgrade in the first place. ❚ DAVE HIGDON is a highly respected aviation journalist who has covered all aspects of civil aviation over the past 36 years. Based in Wichita, he has several thousand flight hours, and has piloted pretty much everything from foot-launched wings to combat jets. Contact him via Dave@avbuyer.com

2021 was a ‘BANNER YEAR’ for Business Aviation Business Aviation is doing well at the moment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its strengths were in great demand: anyone needing to make major trips could not avoid Business Aviation, as it was the only transportation segment able to compensate for the lack of services offered by the commercial airlines. All segments of the industry benefited from this.

Business Aviation in Europe has come through the global COVID-19 pandemic almost unscathed. During the past two years, passengers who needed to travel for business or pleasure had no viable alternative to Business Aviation to cover longer distances. Airlines had massively thinned out their schedules and networks, leaving only business jets to meet travel needs. Although Business Aviation also experienced a noticeable decline in booked flights in the first half of 2020, bookings rose quickly thereafter — in the second half of 2021 activity even surpassed the levels of the record year, 2019. The entire industry value chain benefited from this high demand and the high number of flights operated. Maintenance operations had more work to do, as a high number of flight hours led to higher demand for maintenance activities; aircraft brokers were very busy as used aircraft sold, leading to the number of available used aircraft on the market decreasing. This naturally put pressure on prices. Finally, manufacturers saw increased orders for new aircraft.
VistaJet’s Record Year Vista Global Holding, as one of the largest providers of business aviation services, had another record year in 2021. The group saw a 64 percent increase in flight hours flown worldwide last year compared to the previous year. Compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, the increase in hours flown is still an impressive 57 percent. VistaJet customers can also purchase their flights with the executive charter company via an annual 18 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE APRIL 2022
subscription. Last year, the number of hours flown by annual subscription customers increased by a staggering 90 percent to 22,000 hours compared to 2020. Thomas Flohr, Vista’s founder and chairman, said: “2021 has been an incredibly strong year for Vista and we have delivered all-time record-breaking figures as a result of the huge demand for our subscription, membership and on-demand offerings. There is clearly a paradigm shift in the global client’s view of private aviation and Vista’s world-leading position has enabled clients across the globe to experience its benefits as a critical mobility solution. We are seeing contract sizes grow significantly across both VistaJet and XO and we are working around the clock to ensure we have necessary infrastructure and capabilities in place to ensure the complete flexibility and diversification of our services in the most sustainable way. “We have added over 30 aircraft during the year, strengthening Vista’s over 200-strong fleet offering. Having a fleet of Global 7500s now fully operational has been a game-changing moment since its launch in 2021, and we will build on its success by adding even more new Global 7500 aircraft to strengthen our global offering by the end of 2022.”
Fractional Ownership NetJets, the world's largest provider of fractional ownership aircraft, has also benefited from the Business Aviation boom and experienced a record year in 2021. At the end of 2021, the company operated around 30 percent more flights than at the comparable time before the

outbreak of the Coronavirus crisis. In total, more than 600,000 passengers flew aboard the company’s aircraft last year. The combined fleet of NetJets in the US and NetJets Europe has grown to 760 aircraft – including those managed on behalf of customers. In 2021 alone, 55 new aircraft were added. In December, NetJets took delivery of its first Bombardier Global 7500, the company’s new ultralong-range flagship. Despite the many new additions, however, the capacity on offer was not enough and NetJets was forced to keep aircraft in its fleet longer than planned. The company even stopped selling used aircraft and at times stopped accepting new customers! Currently, according to NetJets, the list of requests for new aircraft ownership includes over 2,000 entries worldwide.
Orderbooks Swelled While commercial airliners manufacturers still had to accept order cancellations in 2021, the order books of business jet manufacturers filled up significantly. Some of the manufacturers had to struggle with problems in their supply chain in order to process all orders on time. According to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), manufacturers delivered 10.2 percent more business jets last year than in 2020. In absolute terms, there were 710 new business jets in the hands of their owners. Textron Aviation alone delivered 164 of these aircraft, Bombardier Aerospace came in at 120 deliveries, followed by Gulfstream Aerospace with 119, Embraer with 93, Pilatus Aircraft with 45, Honda Aircraft with 37, and Dassault Aviation with 30 business jets. In the personal jet segment, Cirrus Aircraft achieved 86 deliveries of its Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet.
French manufacturer Daher Aircraft, which produces the TBM turboprop singles and the utility single-engine Kodiak, was also quick to put the slump in deliveries in 2020 behind it. In 2021, the manufacturer delivered as many turboprop singles as it last did in the record-breaking year of 2019, delivering 17 Kodiak 100s to customers in addition to 51 TBM family aircraft. The main market for the TBM family is and remains North America, and this did not change last year: of the 51 aircraft delivered, 39 found their home there. Europe caught up somewhat with a total of eight deliveries: two aircraft remained in France, two went to the UK, while one TBM each was delivered to Germany, the Netherlands, Cyprus and Denmark. The outlook for 2022 is positive, according to Didier Kayat, CEO of the Daher Group. He spoke at the presentation of the 2021 figures that 2022 could be the best year ever for Daher's aircraft manufacturing activities. At the moment the situation for Business Aviation looks good, although what impact the war in Ukraine will have is not yet foreseeable. But when it comes to getting from point A to point B over longer distances individually, safely and quickly, there is no alternative to business aviation. In 2021, the industry was able to prove its resilience to the crisis by playing to its unique capabilities. ■

AERO 2022 will take place in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from 27 - 30 April, 2022. The show will focus on the industry’s restart after the pandemic, and the topic of sustainability in aviation will also play a central role. The upcoming edition will offer a complete range of products for all areas of General Aviation. Aircraft ranging from civil drones to gliders, ultralights and gyrocopters, helicopters, touring and training aircraft with piston or turboprop engines and business jets will be present. New propulsion systems, electric flight, stateof-the-art avionics, services, and accessories for pilots are further focal points. These topics are also reflected in the AERO Conferences, making Europe’s largest General Aviation event also an important platform for knowledge exchange and continuing education.

Turboprops Did Well Too However, not only the business jet segment, but also the turboprop segment performed well last year. According to GAMA, 527 turboprop aircraft were delivered by manufacturers to customers in 2021, which was 19 percent more than in 2020. Here, too, Textron Aviation came out on top with 54 Caravan family single-engine turboprops and 71 Beechcraft King Air twins delivered. Swiss manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft almost matched the previous year’s record with 88 PC-12 turbroprop singles delivered, while Piper Aircraft closed 2021 with 46 Piper M500 and M600 turboprops delivered.

The Tecnam P2010 H3PS is powered by a 104kW Rotax 915 IS engine coupled with a 30kW Rolls-Royce electric motor, providing a 134kW (180hp) powertrain in a fully integrated parallel hybrid configuration. “As such, this four-seat aircraft is first of its kind,” stated Tecnam. According to Tecnam research & development director Fabio Russo, the successful flight test demonstration marks “a major milestone” in the aviation industry’s journey towards decarbonisation and the introduction of alternative powertrains. “Though H3PS is not intended for market purposes, our successful flight tests demonstrate that a hybrid powertrain, with a combustion engine coupled with an electric motor, can bear the same useful load as the traditional 180hp combustion engine,” said Russo. H3PS, which stands for ‘High Power High Scalability Aircraft Hybrid Powertrain’, is a project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. “With [the project’s] success, Tecnam Aircraft and project partners have validated the aircraft’s scalability potential, lower emissions, state-of-the-

Italy’s Tecnam Aircraft, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce and Rotax, have successfully flown the new P2010 H3PS hybrid aircraft. The Permit to Fly was issued by ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority. The flight took place on 21st December 2021, at 3:54 pm, with Tecnam chief experimental test pilot Lorenzo De Stefano at the controls, and was observed by the Tecnam, Rolls-Royce and Rotax development teams.

Tecnam’s P2010 H3PS is the first General Aviation aircraft with a parallel hybrid configuration to take flight, representing a major milestone on the aviation industry’s journey towards de-carbonisation. art power management technology, building a viable launchpad for future green aircraft models.”
Green Transition Continues Commenting on future developments, Tecnam managing director Giovanni Pascale Langer said his company would continue to focus on driving the green transition in aviation. “Tecnam’s approach to innovation is truly sustainable,” he said. “I look forward to seeing H3PS inspire more innovation as it drives our industry forward with cleaner, more efficient technologies.” Rob Watson, president of Rolls-Royce Electrical, added: “The successful first flight of the P2010 H3PS demonstrator is a pioneering achievement by the team to advance hybrid-electric flight. Working with Tecnam and Rotax has been hugely beneficial, and this project has continued to build our capabilities in delivering allelectric and hybrid-electric power and propulsion systems for the advanced air mobility market. Rolls-Royce is committed to investing in the technology solutions to enable and deliver sustainable aviation.” Michael Dopona, head of design organisation BRP-Rotax, said: “We are very pleased that we could intensify our collaboration with Tecnam and RollsRoyce within the H3PS project. The tests showed that there are still challenges to take up. However, due to the efforts of all three parties the test flight could be concluded with deeper understanding and of course with a safe landing. “The project showed that the joint venture with the qualified knowledge of these three global player companies in aviation led to very interesting and future-orientated results for innovative propulsion systems.” I

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

SHARK Aircraft Celebrates Round-the-World Flight
The first SHARK prototype came into existence in 2009. The first three aircraft were delivered in 2011, and at the beginning of 2013 SHARK received Czech and German type certificates. As of March 2022, more than 100 aircraft had been delivered to 22 countries worldwide, with Zara’s SHARK bearing S/N 080.
In January 2022, SHARK went down in history when one if its aircraft conveyed 19-year-old British-Belgian Zara Rutherford around the world, leading to her becoming the holder of two Guinness World Records. For the whole five months, 200 flight hours and 52,000 kilometres, SHARK proved its reliability and versatility far beyond any doubt. The aircraft and its technical condition, which was being checked non-stop thanks to online data sharing, did not raise even a single worry although the conditions were truly extreme. It was rather weather pitfalls which made the SHARK team restless. Freezing temperatures combined with snowing in Iceland, Canada, Alaska and Russia; heavy rains in the wettest city in the world – Quibdo in Colombia — as well as in Indonesia or Singapore; thunderstorms in the whole region of South-East Asia; or hurricanes in the US, and a super-typhoon off the East coast of The Philippines; smoggy areas in South Korea and India; strong gusting winds in Dubai or in Russia; and, last but not least, desert heat and haze in the Middle East, or earlier in Mexico and in the south of the US. Even the last two legs in Europe did not go according to plan due to weather issues.
Challenging Flights
While SHARK.AERO’s CEO, Vladimir Pekár, considers flights above Iceland, Greenland and over the Bering Strait to be the most difficult and even too much given local low cloud cover combined with low temperatures, Zara reported long flights above uninhabited Siberian lands to be the most demanding due to almost no possibility of diversion. Nonetheless, throughout the expedition, Zara could count on SHARK’s performance, uncompromising aerodynamics, incredible flight characteristics, manoeuvrability, and capability to be operated on
all surfaces and in all climates, whether in freezing Magadan, Russia with temperature as low as -34°C or in Monterrey, Mexico with temperature climbing to +36°C. Altogether the circumnavigation took SHARK and Zara across 30 countries and five continents. The longest flight (2,000 km) took place from Mumbai, India to Al-Ain, the UAE, and the longest flight over water (1,861 km) led from India to the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. The highest altitude of 12,750 ft was recorded above Greenland. On the other hand, while detouring over the Sea of Japan to avoid North Korean airspace, the altitude of just 7,000 ft impeded any successful radio transmission.
What’s SHARK?
What is the SHARK aircraft and how was the aircraft with Serial Number 080 modified for the recordbreaking journey? Zara was lent an ordinary, fully equipped SHARK with main landing gear doors, heated pitot tube and an integrated parachute. The configuration comprises Rotax 912 ULS 100hp engine; Woodcomp two-bladed hydraulically adjustable propeller; 150-litre fuel tanks; 92-litre Turtle-Pac tank (with pump) on the rear seat; Dynon SkyView HDX avionics with autopilot; anti-collision system; and Flybox OBLO back-up EFIS. Modifications: A valve and switch were added for pumping fuel from the bladder tank into the fuel
tank in the right wing. Back-up Trig radio with antenna (not needed at all throughout the journey). Integrated Iridium satellite phone. Removed sidesticks and other control systems on the rear seat. Spare parts: Reserve tyre, regulator, accumulator, ventilating flaps’ servo, oil and spark plugs. Applied cruise regime: 5,000 RPM, MAP 26 = consumption of 20 l/h, speed of 260-270 km/h (in fact a little bit less – uncleaned plane, GoPro camera on the wing and elevator, another antenna), endurance of 12 hours, range over 3,200 km. Speed of 250 km/h for planning and flight in strong turbulence. Most flights lasted for 4-5 hours, in some cases less. The longest, Mumbai to Al Ain, took eight hours. Support and failures: Zara could address the SHARK team even during flights and she did so few times. The biggest issue was a clogged pitot tube following take-off from Spaceport America, which was repaired by local mechanics after a safe landing back on the ground. A ventilating flap servo was replaced in Russia. Dynon logs (up to 30 hours in case of second-by-second sampling) being sent by Zara to the SHARK team enabled remote diagnostics. After landing in Singapore, she asked for a voltage check. Log analysis indicated an issue which was solved by replacement of the regulator as well as accumulator for precautionary reasons.

Fly Aeolus
Air Taxi Model Grows in Europe Fly Aeolus is a company in the private air travel industry that offers affordable air taxi services with Cirrus SR22 and Piper PA46 Meridian (or Piper 500) aircraft in Europe. Fly Aeolus operates principally on a shared-ownership model. Before 2020 it also added an aircraft brokerage department. A Belgian company, Fly Aeolus was founded in 2009 by Stefaan Ghijs and Vincent Wigmans. Based in the city of Antwerp, it offers private flights in the form of air taxis throughout the European continent. 2011 marked the start of its operations. Since its inception, the company has seen continuous annual growth. Today the company has offices in Rotterdam, Liege and Berlin. Fundamental to its business model, its fleet has been extending in recent years throughout other European countries such as Germany, France and Belgium. Currently it is composed out of 14 Cirrus SR22 and one Piper Meridian aircraft. Aircraft are constantly added to the fleet. To increase the fleet Fly Aeolus cooperates with Cirrus SR22 owners looking to generate a return on investment on their aircraft while ensuring that the aircraft is operated in the Fly Aeolus programme in a careful and proper manner. Hence Fly Aeolus has become the largest Cirrus SR22 operator in Europe, flying on demand to a total of 1600 airports and airfields on the European continent.
New Partners Welcome Fly Aeolus is constantly expanding its fleet and is always looking for new Cirrus SR22 and Piper PA46 aircraft partners. The larger the spread of the fleet, the more it will be possible for Fly Aeolus to increase its distribution power and therefore reduce costs for customers. The company operates under a fractional ownership model. If a customer intends to make multiple flights in a year, the Fly Aeolus model requires that he or she will have to invest in a share in an aircraft within the fleet. The fractional acquisition is secured by signing a purchasing agreement and paying a registration fee. The aircraft eventually belongs to various customers. The flights will be paid by the customers on a per-operation basis. In addition, Fly Aeolus offers frequent flyers to subscribe to different membership programmes. These programmes allow customers to benefit from flight discounts and free cancellation insurance, among other things. Customers have access to the entire fleet. So, if the aircraft, in which the customer took a fractional share is unavailable at the time of a flight request, an alternative aircraft will be made available.
Fly Aeolus Fleet Fly Aeolus operates two aircraft types. First, it has the Cirrus SR22, a single-engine piston aircraft with four seats; and, secondly, the Piper PA46 Meridian or 500, a single-engine, 6-seater aircraft that is 9 m long and
3.4 m high. This aircraft allows the carriage of larger groups in comparison to the Cirrus SR22. Thanks to its range capabilities it is perfect for more distant destinations in Europe. The aircraft can fly in different weather conditions, even when they are unfavorable, climb to altitude, and is equipped with a de-icing system. The aircraft is equipped with a pressurised cabin which allows it to fly higher hence above the weather. This last element is probably the major difference to the Cirrus SR22 and makes it a perfectly reliable alternative. The twin fleet strategy not only allows for operational flexibility and scalability but also customer recognition. The aircraft are carefully chosen to allow them to be cost-competitive with entry-level private jets, while still providing basic comfort. The crew operating this fleet for Fly Aeolus customers are commercial licensed pilots. They meet specific criteria, such as having at least 500 hours total flying time and holding a valid CPL/IR or ATPL/IR. They all have successfully completed training on the Cirrus SR22 or the Piper PA46. Several freelance pilots make up a team and can alternate between the requested operations, hence guaranteeing availability. The company also recently offered aircraft brokerage, through Fly Aeolus Aircraft Sales & Acquisitions. The dual strategy aims to spread risks. This strategy was a distinct choice of Fly Aeolus owners, providing rapid expansion of the air taxi, sales and acquisition branches over the past two years proving the success of this strategy.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE !
Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”
ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE
E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), Beverley Meads Recreation Ground, Barham Road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, SW20 0ET UK. For further information please contact

ARE YOUR BUILDINGS PROPERLY INSURED? Insurance is a strange thing. Unless it’s compulsory (such as car insurance), it doesn’t become a problem until something goes wrong. So you have to think ahead. For example, you may have Hangar Keeper’s Liability Insurance, covering third party aircraft in your hangar, among other things, but is the actual building insured? This will be separate insurance. Recent bad weather in Europe including storms have damaged many structures on airfields and elsewhere, blowing trees down and even causing flooding. Whether you own an airfield or a hangar, or lease a hangar, please do let us know if you want a no-obligation audit of your insurance needs. And remember a good insurance broker can also help you get a lower price while making sure you’re not short-changed on what is covered.

AERIAL TOURS Thrills of a Lifetime!
Have you ever thought of enjoying breathtaking views from inside an aircraft while you soar over fascinating and breathtaking scenery around the world? Or wondered who provides such ‘Memories of a Lifetime’ services? Patrick Ryan offers a special ‘scenic air tour’ of this unique Aerial Work aviation sector, which comes together to make life more exhilarating and fun for everyone!
Welcome to ‘Aerial Work Aviation – Air Tours’
Can you picture it? The buzz from a single-engine Aviat Husky airplane echos in your ears as you soar above the Alaskan landscape. All around you, snow-covered mountains stare at you from every direction, punctuated only by twisting, flowing, cold rocky riverbeds below… a magnificent but remote landscape. Then the plane banks, and over the buzz of the engine the pilot directs you to look at what appears to be just another set of curving, rocky riverbeds. But then, as you scan, the rocks start to come to life, to form definitive shapes — with large brown shoulder humps, massive front claws, and piercing eyes looking up at you – it’s a family of grizzly bears spending the morning catching salmon. If you ever spent time flying around a 3D interactive Earth map at warp speed, you already know the appeal of viewing places from the sky. However, when seen from a real-world viewpoint like an aircraft, even familiar places become new, with different shades, forms, and geographical features you’d never known existed.
46 AERIAL WORK EUROPE APRIL 2022
So it makes sense that Aerial Tours have become more popular and more specialised over the years. Likewise, many Aerial Work service providers have broadened their offerings considerably as customer enthusiasm has grown even with pandemic restrictions.
What is this Special Aerial Work Sector?
Aerial Tours — also known as ‘Air Tours’ or ‘Flightseeing’ — refers to sightseeing trips carried out in an aircraft. An Air Tour means any flight conducted for compensation or hire in an airplane where the purpose of the flight is sightseeing over a preplanned location, often to experience something unique. What is not Aerial Tours? Aerial Tours is not Air Transportation or Recreational General Aviation. Instead, conducting Aerial Tours is a specialised job in its own right. Aerial Tours focuses on touring vs. delivering someone or something from point A to point B. Or taking your mother up in the air so she can see her neighborhood from a new and exciting perspective. There are specific laws and policies specifically regulating commercial Air Tours in many countries. For example, the FAA (under Part 136 – Commercial Air
GA BUYER ONLINE - AvBUYER.COM
ASOG APRIL22.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 11/03/2022 15:47 Page 2
Tours and National Parks Air Tour Management) requires the following safety standards for operators conducting commercial Air Tours: • Letters of Authorisation • Passenger briefings • Life preservers for over-water flights • Helicopter floats for over-water flights • Helicopter performance plan and operations • And many more rules regarding Air Tours over native lands and nature preserves…
Types of Air Tours
Today, the types of Aerial Tours run the full range of many fun and creative possibilities, taking in all kinds of scenery from various airborne vehicles, perspectives, and experiences. These can range from flightseeing enthusiasts choosing to take a short 30-minute flight around a local airfield, to spending a week exploring the remote regions of a desert or mountain range. Here are some of the different types of Air Tours available for you to enjoy on your next vacation: Landscapes & Historical Sites – Fly over panoramas like the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Stonehenge, or the Peruvian Nazca Lines. Cityscapes – Cruise or hover above hectic cityscapes both day or night and capture with your eyes the life of a major city like London, New York, or Dubai. If you’re in the romantic mode, fly & propose over your special city while taking in the exciting views and drinking champaign! Wildlife – Soar over unique wildlife without disturbing their habitat, like whale watching off the coast of northern California or zebra herds in Tanzania.
Adventure Tours – Spend days accompanied by an experienced tour leader and pilot and gain access to remote places of unimaginable beauty away from the well-trodden tourist path, like the outback of Australia or the best fishing spots in northern Canada and Alaska. Vintage Flights – Maybe not in the same category of watching the ground below, Vintage Flight tour services provide people the chance to experience flying a vintage aircraft like the PT-17 Stearman and many more. Ask your tour pilot for the aerobatic package if you have the stomach!
Australia, Antarctica specialists host discussions on natural history and ecological topics. Iditarod Dog Sled Race Flights, Alaska, USA – Besides Antarctica flight tours — and if you can’t get enough of freezing temperatures — fly along during the Iditarod Dog Sled Race in a Cessna or DeHavilland Beaver equipped with snow skis. These tours consist of flying over the race and dropping in at checkpoints to see the dogsled teams up close. Additionally, you’ll fly around Mount McKinley, mountain passes, and small settlements and outposts during your tour.
Unique & Interesting Air Tours
Open-Door Helicopter Flights over Oahu – Hawaii, USA — Fly aboard an open-door helicopter over Oahu for unhindered views of the island. Tour pilots will narrate while you fly over sights like Pearl Harbor, the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, Honolulu Harbor, Hanauma Bay, and the Halona Blowhole.
Zeppelin Rides Over Lake Constance, Munich & Rhineland, Germany — On a Zeppelin tour, you don’t exactly take off; instead, you gently float away from the ground (with the aid of engine power). The flight gives you the same quiet airborne hang-time sensation of a balloon ride but, unlike a hot-air balloon, a Zeppelin can manoeuvre in any direction while cruising at 45 knots.
Things to Think About Before You Fly!
To give you a better perspective of the different types of adventures the Aerial Work aviation ‘Air Tour’ sector provides, here are just a few particular unique and exciting journeys you can take today:
Nazca Lines Flights, Peru – Fly over the ancient and mysterious Nazca Lines in Peru. These flights consist of making numerous passes above unbelievable or unexplainable images of geometric shapes, strange human figures, whales, and monkeys. Antarctica Flights – On an Antarctica flight tour, you’ll fly on a special 11-hour round-trip from Australia aboard a chartered Qantas airliner. You’ll spend four hours over the frozen continent on one of 19 preplanned scenic routes. During the ‘dead time’ flying to and from
When it comes to planning your next air adventure, there are some things to consider. Here’s a shortlist of primary or critical things to think about to avoid wasting your time and treasure: Weather — Seasonal Conditions (e.g., winter snowfall and rainy season, etc.) – Regional Meteorological Trends (e.g., dust and haze that tends to hang in the air during the midday heat over deserts, afternoon mountain thunderstorms in the summer, or monsoon seasons, etc.). Flora & Fauna — Natural Rhythm (e.g., flightseeing trips that involve plants and animals viewing can be harder to predict, i.e., they often involve flying over the right place at the right time to capture the right thing you want to see in your particular creature’s life-cycle, e.g., the mating season in certain parts of the oceans, etc.). Scheduling — Seasonal (e.g., again, based on weather and nature, some Air Tour providers are seasonal and not year-round) – Peak Tourist Season (e.g., expect long lines, higher prices, limited reservation opportunities, etc.) Safety & Reliability — Think before you fly (e.g., the safety record of the Air Tour service provider, how long they’ve been providing aerial tour services, pilot ratings, type of services provided, and reserving a seat in advance, etc.)
The Providers & Aircraft that Thrill You!
As mentioned before, the Aerial Tour sector of Aerial Work aviation flies an array of fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and lighter-than-air (LTA) aircraft to provide safe and unique experiences. However, the types of aircraft used by Air Tour service providers generally provide comfort, excellent visibility, and the unique safety kit to meet the specific requirements of a tour. Here’s a breakdown of how each type or category of aircraft plays its part in the Air Tour business: ❯

Helicopters - Along with fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters are notably popular attractions in the Air Tour sector. Helicopters provide the ‘low & slow’ capabilities that a fixedwing aircraft cannot provide. Plus, it’s probably the first time for someone to have the chance to fly in a helicopter. Additionally, helicopters can provide the unique means to take tourists to unique locations like the bottom of the Grand Canyon for a lovely afternoon picnic. When it comes to the types of helicopters primarily used, most tour providers operate light-lift aircraft followed by medium-lift platforms with plenty of space and visibility for passengers. Here’s a shortlist of several Aerial Tour operators and the type of helicopters that will thrill you: • Celebrity Helicopters, Los Angeles, USA — Airbus H125, Bell 206 Jet Ranger, Bell 412 • Helicopter Tour Dubai, Dubai, UAE — Airbus H130, Augusta H109 • Volcano Heli, Iceland — Robinson R-44
Based on this, you’ll see Aerial Tour providers focus on vast scenic locations or highdemand sightseeing locations with fixed-wing aircraft such as:
Gyrocopter (Gyroplane, Autogyro) – Not used at the same level as fixed-wing and helicopters, gyrocopter flight tours can be found easily in all corners of the world. Gyrocopters provide a low-cost option for both tour providers and tourists. Even though gyrocopters don’t fly like helicopters, they are just as exciting and safe.
• Airventures Alaska, USA — Cessna 185 Skywagon (Floats, Bush Wheels, & Skis) • Antarctica Flights (Captain’s Choice Pty. Ltd), Australia — Boeing 787 Dreamliner • Aerial Collective, Duxford, U.K. — Spitfire T.IX, Me-109, P-51D, Lysander, Blenheim MK1
They also provide the thrill of flying ‘low & slow’ from an open cockpit or under a glass bubble canopy, which is still a great adventure. If you’re interested in such a flight, look at firms such as:
Gliders — Even though the glider or sailplane doesn’t have the flying capabilities of other powered aircraft (passenger capacity, etc.) gliders are still a popular tour with many tourists who want to ‘soar like a bird’ without all the noise. Like the powered aircraft Air Tour sector, many glider operators provide scenic and even aerobatic rides over cities, historical sites, and even geological locations like volcanoes.
• IntoTheBlue, Manchester Gyrocopter Tours, UK — Open cockpit M.T.O. Sport or closed cockpit Magni M24 • Adventure Flights, Costa Rica — E.L.A. Eclipse E.V.O.
Unlike the powered aircraft tour sector, travel agencies organise these excursions while freelance commercial glider pilots or soaring clubs provide the flight. Here’s a sample of some of the types of providers who’ll get you flying as soon as possible with a quick auto-tow or bungee-launch: • Virgin Experience Gifts — The type of tour and glider is almost endless. It depends on what you want. Just don’t forget about the ‘Things to Think About Before You Fly!’ section of this article. • Aero Club Adele Orsi Calcinate, Italy — Schempp Hirth Duo Discus, D-9828 • Honolulu Soaring, Hawaii, USA — ASK-21, S.G.S. 2-32 Lighter-than-Air (LTA) — Even before the Wright Brothers took their first flight, LTAs were already providing scenic tours by air. Today, balloon rides are still very popular and available worldwide and probably available in your area. But, like gliders, LTAs provide a simpler, quieter, and natural sense of floating effortlessly… plus, eating and drinking ‘Hors d’Oeuvres’ without turbulence. So, if you like it slower, lower, and a bit more romantic, here are some unique balloon tour providers around the world for a taste: • Hot Air Balloon Expeditions — Classic Style Passenger Riding Hot Air Balloons (Heavy-lift burners and enlarged baskets for up to 28-32 passengers) • Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei GmbH — ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Zeppelin NT
Single Engine & Twin Engine Fixed-Wing Aircraft – Before helicopters came into their own, the use of fixed-wing aircraft dominated aerial sightseeing tours since the 1920s. To this day, fixed-wing aircraft allow for longer flight times and incur lower running operating costs regarding ROI (Return-on-Investment) when it comes to specific tours. Additionally, fixed-wing aircraft are best suited for long-distance remote adventures, high and quiet wildlife tours, and large groups touring or transporting.
Unmanned Aircraft — Last but not least, the unmanned aircraft or ‘Drone’ aviation community, like other Aerial Work aviation sectors, are quickly entering the Aerial Tour sector with innovative ways to bring the same thrilling experience of seeing the world from the sky. One example of this innovation is an Air Tour provider or ‘Aerial Immersion Sightseeing Tour Operator’ in Montreal, Canada providing real-time virtual scenic flights. They use drones flown by professional pilots on-the-spot around the city to show spectacular sights while narrating the history of specific iconic areas. They do this by providing a steady stream of live imagery to the tourist through highresolution First-Person View (FPV) goggles. All the while, passengers are offered a 360-degree immersion experience while their feet are firmly planted on the ground, i.e., an excellent opportunity for elderly or less able-bodied tourists.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank You For Flying With ‘Air Tour’!”
It’s that time, as with any fun vacation or exciting adventure, all good things must come to an end, and sadly we must all go back to the ‘real world’. As you can see, Aerial Tours is not one type of aircraft or one type of experience. Instead, this Aerial Work aviation sector consists of many different non-transport flying excursions ranging from charity sightseeing to fishing adventures, onboard many unique platforms. All of which comes together to provide people with a ‘thrill of a lifetime’ or, in some cases , a ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’. So, when your magic carpet comes to its final parking place on any Aerial Tour event, and you walk away astonished, happy, and emotionally affected by what you observed or experienced – that’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ by the Aerial Work — Aerial Tour sector. The next time you take your family on vacation, think about booking an aerial tour to maximise and expand your perspective of the world. Without the world of Aerial Tour providers, life would be far less interesting (or dare I say “Boring”!) ■ 48 AERIAL WORK EUROPE APRIL 2022

Sourcing, Buying and Relocating Vintage Aircraft Having had the opportunity to write about some truly beautiful aircraft over the past six months, a question I’m often asked is: “When sold, how are these aircraft moved from one country to another?” Whether it’s a Chipmunk or a Spitfire, getting an aircraft moved around the planet is not an operation to take lightly. In the case of the airworthy examples, in particular, dismantling and packing the aircraft into a shipping container requires expert knowledge and a skilful engineering team. Buying an aircraft (any aircraft) is, for the most part, a checklist exercise. As long as you’ve got a good checklist, and someone who knows what they’re doing to assist you, there’s no reason for it to be a challenging manoeuvre. So, before I get into the logistics of a relocation, let’s first take a quick walk through the normal steps of purchasing an aircraft. These steps are actually true for any aircraft, not just warbirds, and should include due diligence, a contract, and taking clean title. Once it’s purchased, it can be packed and shipped to the new owner.
Aircraft Found…What Next?
Let’s assume you’re in the UK and have found an aircraft overseas, maybe South Africa. It looks nice in the brochure, you have some pictures, but what happens next?! First things first: is it as described? You should be able to acquire enough preliminary information about the aircraft, including the specification, it’s history and a good set of photographs, to decide if ‘in principle’ this is something you would like to proceed with (or not). If it is, then an early step I highly recommend is a PrePurchase Inspection (PPI). A PPI will usually take a couple of days — one day to review the records and logbooks, and a second day (or longer if required) to evaluate the aircraft physically. What’s a PPI looking to achieve, I hear you ask? In the case of the logbooks and records, the inspector dons his detective cap and looks at how complete the records are. Is there traceability on life-limited parts? What’s the history of the aircraft? In the case of the physical inspection, this will include the need to remove some panels and inspect the

aircraft from an airworthiness point of view. Attention will be drawn to looking for evidence of undisclosed accident damage. A further step will likely include carrying out an engine run or an air-test where notes are recorded about the performance and handling qualities of the aircraft (if flown) and such things as the temperatures and pressures (“T’s & P’s”) are recorded, and checking the aircraft systems, etc. It’s good practice to then carry out a post-flight ground run / inspection immediately after to look for oil leaks etc. All in all, is the aircraft as described according to the info that’s been supplied? And is it indeed airworthy and fully operational? Essentially, this is an audit rather than an annual maintenance inspection, but the inspector should be able to gather enough information to be able to supply you with a detailed technical report which further includes an assessment of the cosmetic condition as well.
Make Sure the Buyer is Serious…
However, before an owner will let one person after the other approach the aircraft with a tool kit, they want to know there’s a serious buyer at the end of it. After all,

Believe it or not, most single engine aircraft will fit into a single shipping container. There are three sizes of container available and it’s obviously essential to get the right one. Most aircraft need a 40ft high cube container. The high cube is (as the name suggests) higher than the standard 40ft size and most importantly includes taller doors which is otherwise a common restriction. A good shipping service will also include a ‘container drop’ which means the container is taken off the haulage trailer and placed on the ground for ease of loading. Depending on where you are in the world will depend on how this is done. In the UK there are many companies that have cranes built on to the trailer so it can unload itself. But abroad you’ll need a small crane to come separately. In the US they call these ‘Boom Trucks’ and even the small ones are pretty huge!
Load Plan
they’re taking their aircraft off-line for a couple of days and trusting whoever is coming to inspect it not to damage it. Standard procedure is to first agree an Aircraft Purchase Agreement (APA). Then send a deposit, usually via escrow (what’s escrow? See further below) which is fully refundable against the results of the PPI, i.e. the buyer can ‘accept’ or ‘reject’ the aircraft. If rejected, the deposit is refunded. If accepted, the deposit becomes non-refundable and the balance is due payable into escrow. At this same time, the seller will send a signed but not dated Bill of Sale to escrow to hold pending completion (‘Closing’). The APA will include any further pre-closing conditions applicable and, once completed, these steps will be confirmed to escrow as satisfied. At closing, the escrow agent will release the funds to the seller while simultaneously dating the Bill of Sale and releasing this to the buyer (thereby passing title). A good APA will outline all the steps nice and clearly so everyone can progress without ambiguity.
Using Escrow
What’s escrow? Many people won’t be familiar with using something called ‘escrow’. What is it? Escrow is a third party that independently holds funds for the buyer and holds title documents for the seller. The use of escrow resolves the chicken-and-egg scenario of closing the deal. That is to say, there’s no debate about who does what first – i.e., should the buyer release the funds and then take the keys, or take the keys and then pay. When the conditions of the APA have been met, they (escrow) simply swap hands at closing to release funds and title at the same time.
maintenance company will all liaise about what the aircraft will need in theory (if anything) for its future operation in its next country, including reasonable consideration for potential avionic changes such as 8.33 kHz-spaced radios and a Mode S transponder. These are all simple steps, but the process can vary from country to country so as long as you have knowledgeable people handling it for you, it’s all very straightforward for the buyer who should, to the best of everyone’s ability and for the sake of good planning, expect to be made aware of upcoming tasks and costs. Once the aircraft is purchased, we get to the relocation step. Let’s continue with the example aircraft located in South Africa.
Don’t Miss the Boat!
The most common way to move an aircraft from one place to another is ocean freight. As with the buying steps, a good sales company will likely have contacts and relationships with shipping companies and, in many cases, the sales service will include management and liaison with the various third parties to ensure a smooth journey ‘door to door’. From the buyer’s side it should be low stress, cost-effective, interesting and even enjoyable!
The load plan will depend on the aircraft. Most load plans will require a frame or support structure to be made. The aircraft is then partially dismantled and fitted to the frame. Often there is one frame for the fuselage and then one or two support structures for the wings so they can be loaded leading-edge down with the wing chord standing up. Then, in it all goes! The shipping company calls this ‘stuffing’, which sounds like it might include some kind of run-up. But don’t worry, it’s just a standard term. A well-coordinated plan will ensure the aircraft is ready when the trailer arrives. The container is then ‘grounded’ and the aircraft loaded (aka ‘stuffed’). This can usually be completed within the same day, sometimes two days if it’s a tight fit. If the aircraft is too big for a container load plan then you move to a ‘flat rack’ which is basically an opensided load platform to accommodate freight that is too big to fit inside the container. In our South African example, an export document (a ‘SAD500’) is required before you can deregister the aircraft abroad (also part of a pre-customs clearance), so this is all done ahead of packing and loading and often tied into the APA. The shipping company, liaising with the sales company, will help to ensure everything is teed up in good time (there’s a few other documents and steps required but it’s all taken care of as part of the service).
As you would expect, there are various escrow companies to choose from and the sales company should be able to offer some recommendations based on their previous experience. Typically, the escrow company used would be specifically experienced with handling aircraft transactions. Their fees aren’t expensive and are usually split 50:50 between the buyer and the seller. Using escrow is by no means compulsory but, especially in the case of higher value aircraft and overseas transactions, it’s highly recommended.
Registration, and Export?
Subject to the next register the aircraft will go on, you may require an Export Certificate of Airworthiness. ‘Export’ in this case is nothing to do with customs, it’s a means to certify the airworthiness of the aircraft as it leaves the foreign CAA. It will specifically note the importing CAA as well, as will the deregistration certificate. It should be expected that the sales company, the PPI inspector, and the future

There are several shipping lines from South Africa to the UK every week so by the time the sale closes and the documents are all in place, you can book a ship for about two weeks later. Or, if you’re running late, you can nearly always slide the booking to the next ship. So, you shouldn’t ever actually ‘miss the boat’! Most major ports in the world have similar availability. Once it’s all loaded, the doors are shut and locked with a ‘seal’. This has a unique serial number on it which is noted. Then the container is picked up (literally) and put back on the trailer and driven to the port a few days before the sailing date for loading on the ship.
Transit Time
Transit to the UK changes from voyage to voyage (as with trains, some make more scheduled stops than others) but it ranges from three to four weeks between Durban and the UK. Transit times for other parts of the world obviously vary. The east coast of the USA from London for example can be as quick as 14 days. The west coast, more like 30 days. The shipping company, still liaising with the sales company, will have an in-country customs broker ready for the import who will have all the documents ahead of the arrival time and they will take care of the import customs clearance. Within a couple of days of the ship arriving it will be back on a truck and heading to the final delivery address for unloading. The buyer (as the customer) should have to do very little indeed during any of this process — it should all be part of the overall service if the sales company is experienced in these steps.
Unloading
The maintenance company is usually the place of choice to unload the aircraft. The packing should have included a packing list, a Load Plan and photographs. This way, the arrival will all be a known quantity in terms of an extraction plan. Obviously there is then a work-scope for reassembly, registration and certification ready for flight which the buyer will have been made aware of in the buying stages as part of the planning. As with most things in aviation, a smooth journey ahead should be preluded by the law of the ‘Six P’s’ aka ‘Prior Planning & Preparation Prevents Poor Performance’. Actually most pilots refer to the ‘Seven P’s’ but I obviously can’t write the missing word in a publication! In conclusion: finding an aircraft, and with that, the best example of what you’re looking for, will often need to include looking further afield than your country’s shores. But in the right hands, with the right resource (and never forgetting half a dozen Ps), it can (and should) be a really exciting and interesting experience and forms part of the adventure of aviation that we all love. For aviation is nothing if it is not about getting out in the world and exploring. The team at TASC Vintage has been hands-on connected with some 500+ aircraft transactions. Many of which involve aircraft, buyers, and sellers from all four corners of the planet. More Details about ‘ME108 FOR SALE’! The official build date is 1951, although data plates on components are all 1940s. Some say Nord just assembled the German-made components —which is supported by all the part numbers having the Luftwaffe format. She spent most of her life in the USA as N108J, as part of the Champlin fighter collection. The owner re-engined with a Lycoming in the ‘70s so she could be a reliable everyday aircraft.

She was flown for years on the air show circuit for me by test pilot Dan Griffiths, and he loves it. He used to tell me, “It’s 90 percent of the fun of a Spit for five percent of the money!” I’ve had her since ‘98, and she’s pretty much been continuously flying since then — apart from a couple of years where she needed an engine overhaul, triggering a meaningful cash call. My co-owner took a year to address the situation, eventually selling me his half so I could crack on solo. The engine overhaul then took about six months. More recently, during Covid, I had her on GRO as the airshows dried up and I focused more on my rotary flying. In short, I think she’s 3,000ish hour TT but she’s only got about 40 hours on a new engine (from

Gama Aviation). I think the prop was new at the same time. She’s pretty much been exclusively looked after by Clive Denney at Vintage Fabrics, who also whips her around the odd airshow and again totally loves her. Panel-wise she’s modern radio and transponder with a bit of a dated Garmin GPS. About a year ago she had a new coat of paint by Peter Medley at Flying Colours and a bit of an interior refresh. She’s pretty tidy. Had some lovely adventures in her, she’s taken me to Malta three times for the airshows, then did six weeks in Sardinia with her on a film. You certainly get attention wherever you go! People say someone usually has to die before one comes available — that’s certainly how I purchased her and if you look at average length of ownership, you’ll see people just don’t let them go. Lyndsey Walton had one I think he kept for 30 years. I’m kind of breaking that rule (I hope). I have a second aircraft, G-OTME, that I’ve just done an identical engine conversion on.

New aircraft types like the Bell 505 spurred sales and deliveries in 2021. © EUROPEAN ROTORS
The Helicopter Market is on the Rise Again Helicopter manufacturers are well on their way to recovering from the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which had a significant negative impact on new helicopter deliveries in 2020. The overall mood of the industry is positive. At the helicopter trade show Heli-Expo, which took place in Dallas, Texas in early March this year, the impression (that could already be gained from the visit to EUROPEAN ROTORS in Cologne last November) was solidifying: The market for helicopters is picking up again. The data recently published by the industry association GAMA (General Aviation Manufacturers Association) also underline this trend. According to GAMA, helicopter manufacturers delivered a total of 826 civil and parapublic helicopters last year. Looking at the piston-engine powered and turbine-powered helicopter segments separately, the picture is identical: the number of turbine-powered helicopters delivered in 2021 rose to 645 units, an increase of 24.8 percent over the previous year, while the number of piston-enginepowered helicopters increased from 142 units delivered in 2020 to 181 last year. In relative terms,
this represents an increase of 27.5 percent. In parallel, the revenue generated from sales also increased by 28 percent from 2020 to 2021, to US$3.7 billion (equivalent to 3.4 billion euros).
RECOVERING FAST These figures prove that the helicopter industry is recovering faster than expected. In 2019 – which was a record year for the rotorcraft industry – the handover of 877 helicopters generated a total revenue of US$3.8 billion. The industry has come much closer to this mark again in the past year and has largely shaken off the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. New helicopter models spurred sales and will help to stabilise the rebound of the market. Bell, for example, in 2021 delivered 63 new Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, an aircraft type that was FAA-certified in
June 2017. All models combined, Bell delivered 163 helicopters in 2021. The Robinson Helicopter Company also reported an increase in deliveries: In 2021 Robinson handed over 244 new helicopters to customers, compared to only 177 in 2020. Airbus Helicopters reported 324 deliveries to GAMA, which converts into a market share of about 39 percent. And additional new helicopter types are coming to the market like the Airbus Helicopters H160 and the Bell 525, further spurring sales and deliveries. Unfortunately, the rebound of the market came too late for Enstrom Helicopters. The manufacturer had produced over 1,300 light helicopters between 1957 and 2021 but had experienced a steady decline in deliveries in recent years. In January this year the company filed for insolvency and laid off all employees, effective immediately. ■

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.
