ENGINE TIPS
FROM THE
HANGAR
Since 1929, Lycoming has been producing piston aviation engines and parts from its factory in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. 90-plus years’ worth of research, innovation and dedication prove the company’s commitment to innovation and quality, a commitment that gives Lycoming parts – and, therefore, Lycoming Engines – their reputation for excellence. Airpart Supply is a proud distributor for Lycoming Engines, supplying factory engines and genuine spare parts to private owners, flying schools, FBOs and high-quality engine overhaul shops. Whether you’re new to aviation or a veteran, you know that one question only leads to more. We’ve collected many of the questions we get about our engines and how to properly manage them. These are some of the more common questions asked at our service hangar: QUESTION: Do your new, rebuilt or overhauled engines require a break-in period that consists of cruise at low-power settings? ANSWER: Definitely not. Fly them as you would a hightime engine. In fact, so-called “slow” flying may have harmful effects. The rings may not seat properly, resulting in higher-than-normal oil consumption.
QUESTION: At what rate of oil consumption does continued operation of the engine become a hazard? ANSWER: Generally speaking, when the oil consumption reaches one quart [around one litre] per hour, corrective action should be taken. However, the maximum permissible consumption for a particular engine is listed in the engine operator’s manual.
QUESTION: What are the dangers of operating an engine with high oil consumption? ANSWER: When excessive amounts of oil get past the rings, there is the danger of the ring sticking or breaking with a dramatic rise in oil consumption. Then oil-soaked carbon forms at a fast rate. At the same time, the presence of oil in the combustion chamber has the effect of lowering the octane rating of the fuel. Operating temperatures go up. We have now set up conditions inviting detonation and/or preignition.
QUESTION: What is the most common cause of premature engine wear? ANSWER: Dirt in the air entering the engine through the carburettor or injector due to a worn-out air filter, torn induction hoses or broken air boxes, and then being carried through the engine by the oil.
QUESTION: What is Lycoming EIS? ANSWER: The Lycoming EIS is a drop-in capable replacement for magnetos and provides easy installation and engine startability. Improved reliability in your reciprocating engine ignition system is a key safety enhancement. The Lycoming EIS accomplishes this enhancement by using a solid-state design that has no moving parts and nearly eliminates scheduled maintenance requirements.
QUESTION: Does Lycoming EIS provide cost savings to customers? ANSWER: For someone who is operating magnetos in general, the cost of operating and maintaining one magneto until TBO is approximately $3,000-3,500. When you replace it with an EIS you virtually eliminate those maintenance costs. Therefore, by switching to a dual Lycoming EIS, you can eliminate nearly $6,000-7,000 in costs through TBO. Fleets also have an opportunity for cost savings by switching to Lycoming EIS. Fleet owners can easily investigate how much they are spending on magneto maintenance — there is a good chance that moving to EIS could cut their maintenance costs significantly. Additionally, the cost for a Lycoming EIS is competitive in price with options already available on the market.
QUESTION: I fly an aircraft equipped with a fixed-pitch propeller. During cruise, I’m told to keep increasing the RPM as my cruising altitude is increased. Since I fly pretty high, in order to hold 65% power, I find the RPM is mostly at 2550 to 2600. Won’t this high RPM reduce the engine life?
ANSWER: No. The higher RPM won’t harm the engine or reduce service life. Remember, you are increasing the RPM only to hold the same power you had at a lower altitude at say, 2350 RPM.
QUESTION: What are some common causes of excessive oil consumption other than the burning of oil due to high engine time? ANSWER: Building up of crankcase pressure due to “blow-by” caused by ring wear may result in oil being blown out of the breather. The same thing can result from broken piston rings. Oil could also be pumped overboard due to a faulty vacuum pump or faulty automotive type fuel pump.
QUESTION: My dealer advised me to use straight mineral oil in my new engine until it’s “broken in.” How do I know when it’s “broken in”? ANSWER: When oil consumption has stabilised. Example: After continued checking of oil consumption, you have determined the engine is consistently using one quart in a known number of hours. This period should not exceed 50 hours of operation.
QUESTION: I have problems with lead fouling of spark plugs. What can I, as a pilot, do about it? ANSWER: Several things. See that you have the correct spark plugs — as recommended by the engine manufacturer’s charts, not oddballs recommended by some well-meaning friend. Avoid prolonged idling on the ground. Avoid power-off descents. Lean out at cruise and even on short cross-country flights. Rotate plugs from bottom to top every 50 hours – or 25 hours if necessary.

Is the Future of General Aviation Really Electric? Hydrogen, hybrid-electric or purely electric, or still piston engines? The question of how General Aviation aircraft will be powered in the future is an exciting one. But one thing is already certain today. Whichever type of propulsion system prevails, it will have to be sustainable.
Global aviation has committed to drastically reducing its emissions and even becoming largely climate neutral between 2040 and 2050, even though it only accounts for a low single-digit percentage of global CO2 emissions. And of total aviation emissions, General Aviation in turn accounts for only an extremely small percentage. The technological challenges facing engineers and designers to achieve this ambitious goal are daunting. But the potential lurking in the conversion of propulsion technology for General Aviation is huge for all stakeholders.
General Aviation has very long innovation cycles, not only because of the large investments that go into the development, certification and purchase of new aircraft – which take years to recoup – but also because it has achieved a very high standard of safety. A new technology must first achieve this level of reliability and safety, because even when new products are introduced, safety is without a doubt the top priority in aviation. No one will buy and use a new aircraft that offers worse safety standards than the tried-andtested models.

New Options Today’s internal combustion engines have proven their worth, are reliable, and will undoubtedly continue to be found in General Aviation aircraft for decades to come. But they will face strong competition, even if it is not yet clear today which new propulsion technology will prevail on the market. On the one hand, there is the idea of powering GA aircraft in the future with electric motors that draw their energy from batteries. Various companies are pursuing this concept with increasing success. With the Pipistrel Velis Electro, EASA (the European Union Aviation Safety Agency) already certified the world’s first purely electrically powered

aircraft, in June 2020. It has a maximum take-off weight of 600 kilograms and, at 10.50 meters, the same wingspan as the Pipistrel Virus SW 121 from which it was developed. The 100 hp (74 kW) Rotax 912S3 internal combustion engine of the Virus has been replaced by a 57.6 kW Pipistrel E-811-268MVLC electric motor, which achieves a continuous power of 49.2 kW at 2,350 rpm. Various institutions and organisations such as the French FFA (Fédération Aéronautique Française), the Royal Danish Air Force, and the Westflug flight school in Aachen (Germany) are either already operating it or want to test the prototype for its suitability in pilot training. Greenlease Aero from France wants to make it easy for aero

clubs to operate the Pipistrel electric aircraft. The company has ordered 50 of the Velis and plans to lease them to aero clubs. The British Green Airside initiative is also pursuing a similar business model and wants to buy up to 50 Velis Electro to lease to flying schools.
Advantages Electric aircraft promise significantly reduced operating costs compared to aircraft with conventional piston engines. They are also quieter in flight. As a result, they offer flight schools and clubs the potential to appeal to a larger target group, as the cost of flying is significantly
with batteries or hydrogen in the future. The necessary charging and refueling infrastructure is still lacking today and requires significant investment from the airports and energy providers for alternative types of propulsion.
Innovation Bye Aerospace, based in Colorado, USA, is currently working to get its eFlyer 2 two-seat electric aircraft certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Founder and CEO George Bye selected the ENGINeUS 100 electric motor from French manufacturer Safran Electrical & Power as the propulsion unit.

reduced. But there are two sides to every coin: The low cost and environmental friendliness of electric flight is currently still countered by the energy density of today’s batteries: electric aircraft are currently always very short-range aircraft and lag far behind their combustion counterparts in terms of range. Without dramatic leaps in battery technology, all-electric aircraft will have to stay close to the airfield, as they will already run out of energy after just under an hour of flight time (if that). But battery manufacturers around the world are working on this issue, as electric cars also need efficient and fast-charging energy storage systems, and are accelerating research into efficient, high-capacity batteries. Another hurdle for any new type of propulsion is also the infrastructure at airports, which still has to be built, regardless of whether aircraft will fly

The eFlyer 2 will be followed in the manufacturer’s product lineup by the eFlyer 4, a four-seat, single-engine electric aircraft designed to complement the eFlyer 2 upward with greater range and greater payload. Renowned flight schools such as KLM Flight Academy have already announced their intention to purchase aircraft from Bye Aerospace. For example, KLM Flight Academy has placed orders for six eFlyer 2s and eight eFlyer 4s with Bye Aerospace.
energy density of the best lithium-ion batteries available today. Among the first customers to order the eFlyer 800 are fractional ownership companies Jet It and JetClub, Rheinland Air Service and air taxi company Air2E. The manufacturer says it has more than 700 firm orders for its electric aircraft family.
engine aircraft could continue to fly on alternative fuels for a long time to come. Sustainably produced fuels from various raw materials that are not suitable for food production or power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels are solutions that will enable general aviation to fly sustainably and with low emissions.
Hydrogen is seen by many as the aviation fuel of the future. Airbus and Embraer are looking to develop hydrogen-powered regional aircraft, while general aviation aircraft are already flying on fuel cells. On 25th September, 2020, a modified Piper PA-46 powered by a fuel cell from ZeroAvia took off for the first time in Cranfield, UK. As early as 2022, the California-based start-up plans to offer its powertrain as an exchange engine, enabling its customers to fly emission-free. Hydrogen-powered aircraft do not yet have the range of conventional aircraft with internal combustion engines, but they do have a greater range than purely electric aircraft.
Today, it is not yet clear which solution will prevail: all-electric, hybrid-electric, fuel cell propulsion, or internal combustion engines using sustainable fuels. It is likely that there will not be one solution, but rather different types of propulsion depending on the application. Events like AERO in Friedrichshafen are the perfect spot to discuss the future of General Aviation and to explore new technologies on which manufacturers are working right now.
Even if leaded fuel were to become unavailable in the future, piston

Business Aircraft too… But the manufacturer’s top model is expected to be the eFlyer 800, a twin-engine electric business aircraft with a range of 500 nautical miles and a service ceiling of 35,000 feet. AERO 2022 will take place in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from April 27 to April 30, 2022. The show will focus on the industry’s restart after the pandemic, and the topic of sustainability in aviation will also play a central role. The upcoming edition will offer a complete range of products for all areas of General Aviation. Aircraft ranging from civil drones to gliders, ultralights and gyrocopters, helicopters, touring and training aircraft with piston or turboprop engines and business jets will be present. New propulsion systems, electric flight, state-of-the-art avionics, services, and accessories for pilots are further focal points. These topics are also reflected in the AERO Conferences, making Europe’s largest General Aviation event also an important platform for knowledge exchange and continuing education.

MARTIN ALBRECHT: German Unlimited Aerobatic Champion for 7th Time Martin Albrecht was born in 1974 in Rosenheim, Bavaria. While growing up, Martin’s passion for aviation started with building and flying model aeroplanes. Later, on completing an engineering degree, he started working at MT-Propeller as a design engineer and it was during this period that Martin started flying. Then, in 1996, he realised that learning aerobatics would help him to become a safer pilot. Watching world aerobatic champion Klaus Schrodt during airshow performances, he was fascinated by the accuracy of the flying — a precision he had not seen before. This precision was from that day on a driver in Martin’s flying. And today, Klaus remains Martin’s trainer! Up to the year 2000 Martin continued flight training until he was an instrument-rated commercial pilot, while continuing to develop his aerobatics skills as well.
Test Pilot and Champion!
❮
GERMAN UNLIMITED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2021
EUROPEAN AEROBATIC CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2016, MORAVSKA TREBOVA WITH THE GERMAN TEAM BESIDE THE FRENCH NR. 1 AND THE RUSSIANS NO. 2
❮
Martin is one of the leading engineers at MT-Propeller. With the need for flight testing during certification programs, Martin completed a training course that allowed him to fly beside Gerd Mühlbauer or Josef Eberl, MTPropeller’s EASA CAT 1 rated test pilots. Precision is also central to this kind of flying. With his love for aerobatics, Martin continued to train with world-renowned aerobatic instructors and competed the first time in the UNLIMITED class in 2008. After two years, in 2010, Martin became German UNLIMITED aerobatic champion. Driven by this success, the passion and love for aerobatics became even bigger. In year 2012/2012/2013 as well as 2016 and 2017 Martin repeated his win of the German Aerobatics Championship. Driven by his National success, Martin became a Member of the German UNLIMITED National Aerobatic Team. One of his biggest successes was winning two Team Bronze Medals at the European UNLMITED Aerobatic Championships (in 2012 and 2016).
❮
With one of those FAI medals, the Team Medal he won in 2016 at Moravska Trebova in the Czech Republic, it represented a big dream coming true as it was the same airport that Martin completed his aerobatic licence in 1997. FLY-BY DURING THE AIRSHOW AT THE TOWER
Seven Times the Champion! After a short break in competition flying, Martin started to compete again in 2021. During the 61st German Championship, Martin won the Free Q, the 1st Unknown, 2nd Unknown and 3rd Unknown to make him, for the seventh time, the German UNLIMITED Aerobatic Champion, something no other pilot had ever achieved in the long history of German aerobatics. Classic Aerobatics is the highest precision in Flying, and getting judged by an independent Jury makes it a sport requiring the highest concentration, performing without any mistakes even when experiencing +/- 10G in the cockpit. In 2022 Martin is in planning to take part in another International Aerobatic Competition, and the German National Team is once more aiming to fly into the medals! ■

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

Happy New Year!
Soon it will be two years since virus chaos hit the world but many of us have also been aware that behind the scenes there’s been a squeeze going on in the aviation insurance industry.
Being a broker trying to get the best option for our customers, whether they are pilots or aircraft owners or businesses such as flying schools and maintenance organisations, E&G Aviation Insurance is acutely aware that the number of underwriters has dwindled and those remaining are looking for reasonable margins. For many years aviation as a whole was a loss-making area for them and even the regulators now say they can’t run loss-making ‘books’! That said, according to Chris Varley, Chairman of E&G Aviation Insurance, if you operate a fleet of GA aircraft, he may well be able to find a good package arrangement for your insurance – especially for those offering training and self-fly hire (but also for those chartering aircraft). “But please do give us plenty of time to get quotes,” said Varley. Finally, with 2022 being a ‘recovery year’ for us all, we hope, E&G would like to wish readers of GA Buyer Europe and happy and prosperous “next 365 days”!

How to Tame a Dragon!
By Jamie Chalkley © PAUL JOHNSON. FLIGHTLINE UK
Following on from the Tiger Moth feature (see GA Buyer November) which included only a snippet of the amazing backstory of aviation pioneer Geoffrey de Haviland, the ideas for more aircraft to write about were frankly too numerous to count. Fortunately, we had another
of
de
Havilland’s
master plan(e)s available at TASC Vintage: the majestic Dragon Rapide!
30 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE JANUARY 2022
Designed as an updated and, most notably, faster version of de Havilland’s commercial aircraft the DH.84 'Dragon Moth’ (which following testing was simply called the ‘Dragon’) de Havilland succeeded to develop the ‘Rapide’ almost as quick as the name suggested. From the winter of 1932 when the ‘Dragon’ first flew, de Havilland kept the pressure on his production team who turned out just over 200 aircraft. But he needed more from the aircraft to suit the growing interest in shorthaul passenger carriage. And, as ever, de Havilland was all over it! Keeping to the well-proven design, he stuck with a plywood and fabric construction but changed to tapered wings in order to reduce drag. To be fair, it needed all the help it could get given there were four large wings, large wing struts and their respective bracing wires, all competing with the designer’s aerodynamic ambitions — but literally holding it back from a drag point of view. However, nothing would slow de Havilland down! His team streamlined everything they could and incorporated concepts from the DH.86 Express, included ideas of blending the engine fairings toward the undercarriage and wheels. A pair of smart looking (aerodynamic) ‘trousers’, some said.
And it worked; not only was it a truly majestic looking aircraft (and from the Tiger Moth issue, we all know he liked a thing to “look right”), but he had indeed added a good portion of ‘Rapide’ to the Dragon. For the just sub-110 mph cruise was now nicely over 130 mph! The range was also up from 460 miles to nearly 600! And the gross weight got a boost too; from the Dragon’s 4,200-lb limit to the Rapide’s 5,500-lb takeoff weight. The prototype was called the DH.89 ‘Dragon Six’ (named so due to the engine upgrade from the 4cylinder ‘Gypsy Major’ to the 6-cylinder ‘Gypsy Six’). The test aircraft first flew on 17th April 1934 from Hatfield Aerodrome following de Havilland’s essential move from Stag Lane.
Dragon’s Den During a period that Stag Lane was under increasing pressure from housing development (the same pressure so many airfields have fallen victim to since), Geoffrey de Havilland did what he always did; he got on with the job. In 1930 he bought some farmland near Hatfield, prepared a strip and got flying. By 1933 it was fully

operational and known by the name ‘Hatfield Aerodrome’. Substantial development followed in 1934 and aircraft production moved over in the same year. Not long after, the Dragon Six was airborne.
thousand miles away over at de Havilland Canada, they had them on floats!
de Havilland’s move caused a long-term chain reaction for Hatfield Aerodrome which continued to develop well into the jet era with state-of-theart facilities being built, including multiple R&D sites, test facilities and a windtunnel! The aerodrome eventually closed in 1994 but, even then, it made a name for itself as the film set for Saving Private Ryan and the television series Band of Brothers.
As a side note, and just because it’s just too much of an interesting fact not to mention; in July 1936, pilot Cecil Bebb flew Spanish nationalist General Francisco Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco (a Spanish territory). A Spanish uprising was about to take hold and the arrival of Franco marked the opening move that started the Spanish Civil War. Not that de Havilland had anything to do with it, but the ripples through history amaze me. This relatively little aircraft (by today’s airliner standards) was anything but little in the history books.
The Original ‘Air-Bus’
The Master
Prior to the outbreak of WWII, 205 Rapides had been manufactured by de Havilland for airlines and various other private owners around the world. Indeed, it was considered by many as the most successful British built short-haul aircraft of the 30s and is said to it has been operated in almost every country in the world.
During 1938, nine Rapides were purchased in response to a need for military navigational training as WWII approached. More orders followed and as WWII erupted the RAF adopted all pending and ongoing orders with de Havilland. The RAF version was called the ‘Dominie’ (from the Latin 'Domine', originally understood to mean 'Master' but in the language of the 1930s had evolved to mean ‘Teacher’). The RAF continued to use the aircraft for navigational training (aka their ‘Teacher’), as well as in multiple comms roles, military transport and during 1940 in the Battle of France; as an aerial courier (during which 10 of 24 aircraft were lost in conflict).
The first operator was Hillman’s Airways (already an operator of several DH aircraft including the Dragon). Hillman’s was a coach company from Essex, literally with the intention to use aircraft as a bus in the air (Hillman’s was later merged with Spartan Air Lines and United Airways to form British Airways). From Hillman’s base at Stapleford, you could proudly depart in their ‘Dragon Rapide’ (name update from the Dragon Six), or just ‘Rapide’ for short, bound for Paris for £4.00 (return) to arrive in comfort around three and half hours later (2 hrs airborne, plus the included coach service each end). The cabin was designed to take 6 to 8 passengers (+ 1 pilot) and for its time, really looked the part. Remember, this wasn’t the era of plastic preform interior panels. This was still wood and fabric, the seats had no fold-down tray tables and unlike today, there were no meals or drinks served, which is a good job, as there was no toilet! And the emergency exit was a hatch in the roof, opened by taking hold of a small handle and pulling it around in a circle — the handle was attached to a blade which cut a hole in the fabric. Et voila, an exit! Small improvements continued to benefit the Rapide’s form; in 1937 flaps were added to production aircraft (from then on, the aircraft was designated as the DH.89A) and many earlier models had the flaps retrofitted. Meanwhile, a few
Due to substantial pressure being put on de Havilland to roll out its ‘wooden wonder’, the mighty ‘Mosquito’, the production was moved from Hatfield to Brush Coachworks in Loughborough.
retractable undercarriage, a greater wingspan and an increased take-off weight. But the one thing the extras didn’t add was speed. It didn’t go any faster. Post war, the Rapide (many of which were converted back from Dominies to civil aircraft) were taken on swiftly by several well-known airlines who collectively operated the aircraft throughout the world. London to Cape Town was a mere 10-day flight (hopefully with one or two comfort stops along the way!). And R&D at Hatfield stayed busy with the birth of the DH.104 Dove. The Rapide was essentially superseded by this very different looking aircraft. The Dove was another de Havilland success story, but for me the majestic Dragon had that something extra special about it. Some classics just can’t be beaten! Our picture aircraft is a beautiful 1944 built ‘Dominie’. The aircraft was delivered to the Royal Air Force, Halton Station Flight as NR750 in January 1945 and was coded ‘THA-F’. Following retirement from military service in 1947, the aircraft was sold to A Hamson & Son which registered the aircraft as a civilian DH-89A ‘Rapide’. Not long after it was sold to Manx Air Charters Ltd (which later changed to Manx Airlines) on the Isle of Man. From there it changed hands several times with various domestic airlines and operators. It also did a stint in Norway between 1971 and 1973, and in 1974 (back in the UK) even made a TV appearance in ‘South Riding’ (dressed in costume as G-ADAE), which scored 8.5 on IMDB by the way! For more information about owning a Rapide: www.TASCVintage.com
In total, 728 Rapides were built, some 500 of which were Dominies.
For King and Country The first member of the British Royal Family to ever become a qualified pilot was Edward, Prince of Wales. He departed Hendon on 8th June 1935 in his very own Dragon Rapide, which he flew regularly. The Prince became King Edward VIII on 20th January 1936 and flew himself to London (in his Rapide) to take the throne! Production eventually ended in July 1946 and, as ever, the Rapide was like so many aircraft from de Havilland; he had paid attention and listened to the needs of his customers (and indeed his country!). He always pushed the envelope. He even tried for an extra rapid Rapide which had

PIPELINE PATROL FLYING THE LINE!

The Monitors of Aerial Work Aviation Have you ever thought you could have a large, hazardous pipeline underneath or near your neighbourhood? If you did, you probably thought “How is the pipeline industry keeping these pipes safe?” Patrick Ryan ‘unearths’ the truth of how one part of this industry, the Pipeline Patrol of Aerial Work aviation, is part of that safety net, ensuring those critical lines are safe and effective. Of all the different land, ground and sea personnel and equipment hard at work across the global energy grid, manned and unmanned aircraft are probably near the top of the list of platforms that ensure energy is delivered from the drilling rig to your home safely. Governments around the globe require oil, gas and chemical pipeline operators to conduct periodic inspections to detect risks to both the network and the general public. In addition, the possibilities of natural disasters, security threats, and product theft require even greater pipeline monitoring diligence. With more than 2,000,000 miles (3,218,69 km) of pipeline in over 100 countries worldwide, the more traditional ground methods of inspection, survey, and repair are proving to be both slow and costly. Therefore, with the unique capabilities and reach of the Aerial Work aviation sector, pipeline operators can leverage this air power to ensure their networks are flowing smoothly without worry. 32 AERIAL WORK EUROPE JANUARY 2022
The specialised group of Aerial Work aviators and aircraft dedicated to this mission is ‘Pipeline Patrol.’ Pipeline Patrol provides aerial pipeline monitoring services that focus on quality, accurate inspections with timely detailed reporting to aid pipeline operators. Their focus is to protect the integrity of the pipeline operator’s strip of land (known as ‘Right-of-Way’ or ROW) and the pipes laid there.
Pipeline Transportation 101 Starting with the big picture, the end-user of aerial Pipeline Patrol services is the Pipeline Transportation industry sector. Pipelines transport almost all the natural gas and nearly two-thirds of all hazardous liquids (including chemicals, crude oil, and refined petroleum). Most of these pipelines are underground and privately owned by pipeline companies, rather than gas and oil production companies (e.g., BP, Shell, etc.). When it comes to this, there are three significant types of
transportation structures aerial Pipeline Patrols monitor: Natural Gas Distribution — Natural gas distribution consists of pipeline networks used to ship natural gas from transmission pipelines to private and commercial customers. Natural Gas Transmission and Storage — Natural gas transmission and storage involve moving natural gas from its sources to the local companies operating the distribution network. Included are storage facilities and pump stations. Hazardous Liquid Pipelines and Tanks — Hazardous liquid pipelines and tanks entail transporting crude oil to refineries or refined petroleum products (e.g., gasoline or diesel fuel) to product terminals and airports. Because Mother Nature likes to corrode and shift both natural and man-made objects, it’s ever more critical that pipeline transportation companies track and repair the

condition of every part of their naturally exposed infrastructure to ensure nothing leaks out! Again, many regulatory agencies require utility organisations to inspect and repair their infrastructure quickly because of the dangers associated with these pipelines and facilities that could adversely affect both humans and the environment. The general industry standard and regulatory requirement for inspections ranges from an inspection every three weeks up to 26 inspections per year and require a detailed examination and assessment of each mile/km of pipeline.
More than Monitoring What does the aerial Pipeline Patrol sector do regarding inspecting pipes? The general or obvious answer is the routine use of aircraft (both manned and unmanned) to inspect and monitor above and below ground pipelines from the air. However, there’s much more to the term ‘Patrolling’ than generally ‘eyeballing’ a pipeline. Aerial Pipeline Patrollers are trained and equipped to accomplish many specific technical tasks associated with a pipeline’s lifecycle, i.e., they range from pre-construction to postdecommissioning environmental studies. Today’s aerial Pipeline Patrol companies routinely use aircraft rigged with sensors and cameras to survey oil and gas pipelines, providing pipeline owners with a comprehensive checkup on an asset’s health. In addition, these companies report back to clients with information regarding pipeline leaks and possible external threats and provide updated mapping and other visual data. Some of the specific tasks Pipeline Patrol aircraft and crews conduct are: Erosion and Settlement Inspection – Patrols look for any erosion issue that could damage the line, including failed Best Management Practices (BMP) structures, streams running through the ROW, or erosion due to steep terrain. Additionally, they look for holes or trench settlements within ROW corridors, common on newly constructed pipelines. ROW Encroachment Inspection – Patrols look for construction equipment working on or near the ROW corridors, surveying or staking activity, and agriculture/landowners working on or near the pipeline owner’s ROW area. Leak Detection – Last-but-not-least, the important task whereby Pipeline Patrol crews’ leading task is to detect deadly pipeline leaks. Pipeline leak detection determines if, and in some cases where, a leak, small or big, has occurred in the energy grid.
Benefits of Pipeline Patrol As mentioned before, ground patrolling thousands of miles or kilometers of pipelines can be costly, timeconsuming, and dangerous, depending on the environment. The unique benefits aerial Pipeline Patrol provides are: More Visibility – Aerial patrols can cover more territory and reach remote areas which are difficult to access vs. ground patrols. Plus, aerial patrols at the same time can provide 3D information regarding ROW and pipelines conditions. Cost-Efficient – Compared to the cost of ground
monitoring, aerial patrols and leading-edge technology save time, money, and manpower to mitigate many ground-based logistical obstacles. Advanced Mapping – With advanced aerial sensors and analytical tools, aerial patrols can create 3D maps or models of a surveyed area. Compared to ground patrols, aerial patrols can produce a larger volume of data and comparable quality. Increased Productivity – Advancements in aerial realtime monitoring technology, data collection, and processing have led to significant growth in productivity regarding finding, reporting, and fixing safety issues. Environment & People Protection – Again, aerial patrols mitigate the risk of sending ground personnel over challenging terrain and in adverse conditions 24/7. Plus, it mitigates intruding into the environmentally sensitive areas that some pipelines traverse.
Tools of the Trade Like any complex undertaking, many manned and unmanned fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft support aerial pipeline operations. Aircraft and technology are selected for individual tasks based on their suitability for the task and their cost-effectiveness.
Manned Aircraft When it comes to manned aircraft, the primary class is light GA fixed-wing aircraft, i.e., from single-engine to twin-engine and light helicopters, i.e., with piston or turbine engines. Regarding fixed-wing aircraft, these provide an excellent, cost-effective method for patrolling vast areas. Fixedwing aircraft can cover large territories quickly and meet PHOTO COURTESY OF AIR LLOYD
the technical requirements for many pipeline patrols. In addition, fixed-wing pipeline patrols can provide coverage of areas requiring immediate ROW access in the case of pipeline leaks or damage. Even though many makes and models of aircraft are used in Pipeline Patrol operations, the following platforms can be seen today regularly around the world conducting routine monitoring: •
Aviat Aircraft Inc. – Husky A-1C-180, A-1C-200
•
Cessna Aircraft Company – C-150, C-172, C-182
•
Cirrus Aircraft – G5 Perception
•
Tecnam – P2006
Helicopters, meanwhile, are one of the most effective methods of aerial utility and pipeline patrol. They offer excellent visibility, the ability to fly low and slow, and hover and land if needed. In addition, the helicopter’s ability to land immediately to evaluate leaks, washouts, or other activity near the ROW is a valuable assessment and prevention tool. It offers more immediate availability to problem situations and a much better ‘human-in-theloop’ view than other aircraft. Like fixed-wing aircraft, the following helicopters can be seen today around the skies performing regular inspections: •
Enstrom Helicopter Corporation – 280FX, 280F, F28F
•
Robinson Helicopter Company – R22, R44
•
Bell Textron Inc – 206 JetRanger/LongRanger
•
MD Helicopters – 500 Series
Unmanned Aircraft With the introduction of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV or Drone) technology, this new aviation capability is multiplying in all corners of the pipeline inspecting and monitoring sector. Currently, unmanned aircraft are not utilised or deployed at the same level as manned aircraft because of regulatory and airspace restrictions. However, their application into other close-quarter aerial observation tasks has expanded the ‘menu board’ of aerial Pipeline Patrol services. One of the leading benefits small or micro utility UAVs provide is the ability to inspect even closer. UAVs provide the capability to get an in-depth localised area view of a structure from an elevated position. In case of a hazardous emergency, UAVs can provide a close-up sense of scale and a different perspective from the platform vs. those at ground level. ❯

offer patrols with both visual and sensor inspection capabilities. Additionally, they provide preliminary route studies, route low altitude waiver coordination, and near-real-time custom reports per customer specifications. In some cases, they will provide quickreaction assistance during emergencies and natural disasters.
Even though the UAV manufacturing sector is currently exploding with many makes and models of platform, here is a small sample of some of the types of UAVs that pipeline inspectors and monitors are operating: •
DJI, Inspire II (Medium Lift)
•
VulcanUAV, Raven (Heavy Lift)
•
Freefly, Alta 8 (Heavy Lift)
As an example, here is a small sample of the many types of businesses that provide such aerial Pipeline Patrol services:
Systems & Equipment Relating to the kit Pipeline Patrols utilise, this sector relies on unique, leading-edge, and sophisticated systems like other Aerial Work sectors. Methods of detection include visual, infrared, and laser technology after pipeline construction, and leak detection during service.
•
Barr Air Patrol LLC – USA
•
ROAVR – UK
•
Quikway Air Services Inc – Canada
•
Falcon Helicopters, Inc. – USA
Outside of using a ‘Mark One Eyeball’, some of the primary types of systems and monitoring methods you’ll see utilised by Pipeline Patrol crews (to include the unmanned sector) are:
•
Pergam-Italy – EU
•
and many more…
Laser Aerial Leak Detectors – Laser Aerial Leak Detectors are sensors mounted onboard an aircraft capable of detecting parts-per-million levels of methane gas at ground level. GIS Videography – GIS Videography is the technical process of taking videos in Ultra-HD with georeferenced overlays, including GIS centerline data as well as a host of other references. Additionally, GIS Videography can provide augmented reality to aid in specialised pipeline projects. Aerial Imagery – Aerial Imagery or Aerial Photography uses specialised digital cameras to analyse the status of a pipeline grid. Aerial imagery methods consist of oblique photographs, photogrammetry, and orthophotos. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) – Airborne Lidar systems can capture high-resolution long linear ground
features such as pipelines and identify any safety issues using 3D data. Infrared (IR) Inspections – Infrared (IR) thermography measures temperature variances of a component as heat (i.e., thermal radiation) flows through or from a pipeline. The bottom line is that besides the aircraft, Aerial Patrol technology and tools are critical in supporting pipeline operators regarding ROW certification, project planning, maintenance, required structure counts, and more.
The Patrollers When it comes to who provides such critical aerial Pipeline Patrol services, the market generally consists of small regionalised manned and unmanned aircraft businesses with minimal staff and fleet size. The general service model of these firms is that they
Turning the Tap Off As you can see, keeping the energy flowing safely from a vast drilling rig to your home requires regular and routine technical monitoring. To meet this challenge, the aerial Pipeline Patrol sector is the perfect Aerial Work provider to support the pipeline transportation industry sector, especially in inspecting and monitoring long stretches of hazardous, high-volume pipelines. JANUARY 2022
FIRST TECNAM P2012 SENTINEL SMP FOR APEX LANDS IN TAIWAN
The first of two new Tecnam P2012 SMP aircraft for Apex Flight Academy arrived at Taoyuan International Airport on 16th November 2021, a further step in the company’s quest to expand its horizons. The eleven seat aircraft took off in Capua Italy and arrived in Taipei after flying 6600 nautical miles, with 10 fuel stops, via Russia/Siberia and South Korea, facing temperatures as low as -24 degrees Celsius. The second aircraft on order is scheduled to join Apex in 2022, with an additional six aircraft on option.
differentiation of the business plan and takes advantage of the high cabin volume and of the low P2012 aircraft series operating costs, with no cycle limitations and hassle free engine operations. The P2012 can carry nine passengers and two pilots. Apex pilots and technicians completed their flying and maintenance training in dedicated programmes held in Italy earlier this year.
Apex is the only professional flight training organisation in Taiwan and will use the multi-mission P2012 Sentinel SMP for passenger transportation, air ambulance missions, sightseeing tours, parachute jumping, aerial photography, and more.
Cutting-edge avionics by Garmin offers pilots all the information they require for day, night, IFR and PBN operations, making operations to any airfield another key factor in the choice of aircraft, noted Tecnam.
The company is headquartered in the metropolitan area of Taipei with its flight training base located at Taitung Fengnian (RCFN) Airport. It aspires to become an important base for training Asian pilots, “right in the heart of Asia — Taiwan.”
Capable, Flexible, Affordable “Introducing the P2012 to its fleet means Apex will benefit from the real multi-mission capability of the aircraft: special mission platform, passenger transportation, aerial tours, air ambulance and parachute jumping missions can be performed on the same airframe and interchanged in a timely manner, making the P2012 a force multiplier in the company portfolio,” said Tecnam. “In the special-mission platform role the aircraft outmatches its competitor with full size hatches and high mission power capable of supporting higher class payloads,” added the manufacturer. “The passenger and aerial tour configuration will benefit from the next-level Traveller accommodation, with air
Sightseeing Pioneers conditioning, in-seat power, widest legroom in its class, in fuselage cargo vanes and dedicated wide window at all seats,” Tecnam continued. The air ambulance version takes advantage of the quick conversion in less than ten minutes and of the low and wide cabin door that allows easy and fast patient loading/unloading operations. The newly introduced parachute jumping version, of which Apex is the launch customer, offers a further

Apex Chairman Wilson Kao said that his company would initially introduce sightseeing tours and aerial photography services alongside its training academy. He added that the company is working with travel agencies to introduce the very first aerial tours in Taiwan that take passengers to see the picturesque mountains, canyon and coast of Eastern Taiwan that has never been explored this way in the past. “We are delighted to have this wonderful Italian aircraft in Taiwan. It offers the full versatility we need to operate different missions and expand our business plan, and offers best-in-class services to our customers,” said Kao. Tecnam Managing Director, Giovanni Pascale, stated: “It is an honour to have another P2012 in Asia. We consider that market strategic and we are sure that the P2012, with its undoubtable features and benefits, will be revitalising the aviation in that area.”

New Denali Single-Engine Turboprop Achieves First Flight The Beechcraft Denali, Textron’s all-new single-engine turboprop aircraft, entered the flight-testing phase at the end of 2021 with the completion of its maiden flight on 23rd November from Textron Aviation’s west campus at Eisenhower International Airport, Wichita. The aircraft flew out over Cheney Lake accompanied by a Cessna Citation chase aircraft. Powered by GE Aviation’s new Catalyst engine, the Denali prototype took off at approximately 8:20 a.m. for its 2-hour, 50-minute first flight. Following the flight Ron Draper, president and CEO, Textron Aviation, commented: “Today’s landmark flight is not only a significant occasion for the Denali, it’s a truly great moment for our employees, our suppliers and the customers who will be flying this aircraft.”
Fuel Efficiency Draper added: “With its more environmentally friendly engine and largest cabin in its class, this is an aircraft that will change the landscape for high-performance single-engine turboprop aircraft. [This] flight is just the beginning for what we anticipate will be a long list of important accomplishments as we prepare the aircraft for certification and customer deliveries.” Textron Aviation said that the team “tested the aircraft’s performance, stability and control, as well as its propulsion, environmental, flight controls and avionics systems. The aircraft reached an altitude of 15,600 feet and attained speeds of 180 knots.”
Test Pilot Approval “From the beginning of the flight to the end, the Denali was simply flawless,” said Peter Gracey, Textron Aviation senior test pilot, who took the aircraft on its first sortie with chief test pilot Dustin Smisor. “It’s just a great aircraft to fly. The Catalyst engine was outstanding, and the aircraft performed to the levels we were anticipating… We are really off to an excellent start for the Denali flight test program.” The Denali prototype, along with two additional flight test aircraft and three ground test airframes, will continue to “expand on operational goals, focusing on
40 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE JANUARY 2022
testing aircraft systems, engine, avionics and overall performance.”
Garmin Cockpit
The performance specification targets a cruise speeds of 285 knots and full fuel payload of 1,100 pounds, and a range of 1,600 nautical miles at high-speed cruise (with one pilot and four passengers) — which will allow the Denali to fly from Los Angeles to Chicago, New York to Miami, or London to Moscow.
The cockpit features the Garmin G3000 avionics suite with high-resolution displays and touchscreen controllers. An integrated Garmin autothrottle is a standard feature, interfacing with the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) and Flight Management System (FMS) “to provide easy speed control throughout all regimes of flight from take-off to touchdown.”
A First for Catalyst too… The Denali represents the first application for GE’s new Catalyst engine, which Textron Aviation describes as “a more sustainable engine that burns up to 20 percent less fuel than older turboprop technologies.” It adds that the FADEC-equipped, 1,300 shaft horsepower (SHP)-rated turboprop engine “eases pilot workload with its single-lever power and propeller control.” This is ground-breaking as the Pratt & Whitney PT6 engine has long been the dominant powerplant in this sector. The Denali is also equipped with McCauley’s new 105inch diameter composite, 5-blade, constant-speed propeller, which is full feathering with reversible pitch and ice protection.
Quick-Change Cabin The Denali’s flat-floor cabin is designed to be allow easy conversion between passenger and cargo configurations. The passenger configuration features a standard seating of six individual reclining seats, although there is a nine-place high-density seating option available too. “Passengers will also enjoy large cabin windows, a forward refreshment cabinet and an in-flight accessible baggage compartment,” said Textron. “An optional externally serviceable belted lavatory in the rear of the cabin is also available.” Certification is planned in 2023. Savback Helicopters Hires New Head of Sales, UK & Ireland Savback Helicopters has announced another addition to its sales team, engaging Stephen Mitchell as its Head of Sales for the UK and Ireland. Stephen joins Commercial Director Rick Andrew, and both will be based at the company’s newly opened facilities at the Nottingham Heliport, UK. Stephen brings 25 years of experience in civil aviation sales to Savback. Following 12 years’ service in the Royal Air Force, he began a career in helicopter sales, specialising in transacting Robinson and Leonardo Helicopters. This included 17 years with Sloane Helicopters. Following this, Stephen gained experience in both business jet and commercial airline sales in cooperation with Aura Aviation and JetBrokers. With an additional seven years of experience in the primary aviation markets, he brings a deep understanding of how
the fixed wing and rotary markets complement each other. “Savback Helicopters has an impressive history with many years’ experience selling new and pre-owned helicopters globally, and I am excited to join the team,” said Mitchell. “The recent announcement of Savback’s new UKbased customer facility and its appointment as sole distributor for new production helicopters covering the UK regions makes it a formidable presence in the UK.” Reja Savbäck, CEO of Savback Helicopters, said: “We are very proud to add such a well-known name to the team. Stephen’s experience and impressive background from both helicopter and fixed wing sales will be truly valuable for the company and its long-term expansion plans. This addition allows us to build an even more solid foundation in the UK and Ireland.” www.savback.com
