DRONES:

THREAT OR BLESSING?

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are not only on everyone’s lips at the moment, they also play a major role in the medium- and long-term strategy of many different companies. In some cases, even an entire business model is based on the use of UAVs and UAS. But are drones a threat or a blessing for helicopters and their operators? First of all, they can be seen as a clear threat in the physical sense. Hundreds of thousands of unmanned aircraft in an airspace with manned aircraft – and this does not only include helicopters – represent a threat to manned aircraft when operated by non-expert operators. Conflict situations, near misses and even collisions between helicopters and drones have occurred and they pose a threat to flight safety. A clear legal and practical guide to drone operators as well as the proper use of technology is essential to counter this threat. Secondly, unmanned aerial vehicles may become a threat to the helicopter industry and helicopter operators if their performance increases even further thanks to new battery technology, new flight controls, and improved aerodynamics. Unmanned aerial vehicles are already displacing helicopters from established niche markets. In Luxembourg, vineyards on the river Moselle, which used to be sprayed using helicopters, are now protected against pests using drones. In Bavaria, the first successful trials have taken place in which drones fly tree seedlings into the high mountains, where they are planted.

The Meteorite is Going to Hit! There are many other examples of this kind. They have one thing in common: drones do a better job than their manned counterparts. They apply pesticides on the Moselle much more precisely than helicopters could, and in Bavaria they bring the seedlings much closer and more gently to the planters, who can thus plant the new trees faster and more successfully. To come up with a prehistoric comparison: The meteorite that causes a massive upheaval in industry is about to hit. But some still believe that it will fly past them. It won’t. It will hit. How should the helicopter industry, which has done and continues to do so much important work for society worldwide, respond to this threat? It must shape its own future! And this undoubtedly includes that the existing players must increase their efforts not to be shaped by the future, but to shape the future themselves. Unmanned aerial vehicles are here to stay and evolve. When the technologies are ready, unmanned rotorcraft will fly on a scale that cannot be imagined today. The vertical lift industry is better positioned than many startups to shape the future – manned and unmanned. Who knows the flight control systems of rotorcraft better than the long-established OEMs? Who has aerodynamicists

and designers who know the pitfalls of a development and certification process on an international level far better than any young developer, no matter how passionate? The answers to these questions are clear. That is why it is important for the long-established manufacturers – if they have not already done so – to understand the market for UAVs and UAS as an important future market that will have a lasting impact on their own business model. Instead of an either-or, the manufacturers can only say “both”. If they want to, they are in a position to develop unmanned aircraft that new manufacturers will not be able to bring to market. If their own ideas are not sufficient, there are certainly start-ups that would be happy about a cooperation or even a take-over offer. A team composed of a wellpositioned start-up and an established OEM could quickly mature into an important player in the industry. The software and IT industries have successfully demonstrated this: when a start-up emerged with a promising idea, it was often idolised by the industry giants and eventually taken over. A classic win-win situation. Something similar is conceivable and feasible in the rotorcraft industry. On the one hand, interesting ideas from start-ups can be brought to production and approval maturity within a manageable time frame, while, on the other hand, established manufacturers can prepare their own business models for future challenges with fresh ideas. It is absolutely clear that drones can take on more and more tasks, much more than manned helicopters can do today. But the helicopter will continue to play an important role for society for the foreseeable future, performing manned tasks that drones will not be able to do any time soon, whether because the necessary sensor technology is not yet available, or because the range of unmanned aerial vehicles or their technical reliability still lags behind the expectations of potential operators. So, drones are only a threat for those who do not perceive them as an opportunity; for everyone else they are a chance to shape the future.

Aerial Law Enforcement: Serving their Communities

Without helicopters, the police would not be able to carry out their tasks of maintaining public safety and order as efficiently as they do. The missions for law enforcement helicopters are much more extensive than one might imagine. The demands on the aircraft and their crews are correspondingly high. Koblenz, Germany, in April 2020: During a police raid, a drug dealer initially escapes and evades arrest in his Mercedes 500SL. The high-speed chase in the darkness stretches across two German states and a distance of 100 miles (160 kilometres) over federal roads and motorways. The fugitive is pursued by several police vehicles, but as he drives recklessly at such a high speed, in the end only the low flying helicopter manages to pursue the fugitive. Since the helicopter crew continuously passes on position information, the ground forces are finally able to catch and arrest the fugitive. Without helicopter support, the fugitive would without a doubt have escaped.

Unique Capabilities However, spectacular chases like this are rather the exception in Europe for the flying squadrons of the police. The police have the worldwide task of ensuring public safety and order. The helicopter has proven to be an indispensable tool for fulfilling these tasks. The versatility of the missions, the operational flexibility of the aircraft and the helicopter-specific characteristics cannot (today) be fulfilled by any other aircraft. Although there are police tasks such as documenting 6 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2021

crime scenes or accident sites from the air that can also be performed efficiently and quickly by drones, many other tasks can only be performed by manned helicopters. In addition to documenting accident sites, the range of missions also includes the search for missing persons, in which helicopters save lives around the world virtually every day with the help of various sensors such as thermal imaging or high-resolution cameras. The transport of SWAT teams and special units is also one of the police helicopter’s tasks. Traffic control, airborne patrol, and observation are also on the list. Depending on regional characteristics, police helicopters are also available with special equipment for water or mountain rescue. The police of the German state of Lower Saxony summarise their range of tasks with the words: “The range of operations and tasks includes: searching, investigating, reconnoitring, recognising, observing, informing, photographing, filming, transmitting, transporting, illuminating and much more.”

Firefighting With the increasing number of forest and bush fires, the task of various law enforcement helicopter units is also increasingly expanding to include firefighting missions. Special containers allow water to be picked up and dropped with pinpoint accuracy to fight fires or contain their spread. A very special task for law enforcement helicopters is the surveillance of railway lines of high-speed trains like the TGV in France or the ICE in Germany or the Netherlands. Only helicopters with well-trained crews

are able to detect dangers to rail traffic from the air at an early stage and prevent manipulation of the tracks.

Post-Covid Recovery During the COVID 19 pandemic, the helicopter industry initially experienced a decline in orders. However, the parapublic sector has been able to buck this trend. The number of orders for police and law enforcement helicopters initially remained stable and even increased again over the past few months. The airborne law enforcement market in North America is even back at the level it was before the Coronavirus crisis. This development is not only driven by more performant helicopters, but also by the lower operating and maintenance costs of new models as well as new sensor technologies that support law enforcement officers in their tasks more efficiently.

Helicopter Choice All major manufacturers such as Airbus Helicopters, Bell, Leonardo Helicopters, MD Helicopters, and Sikorsky Aircraft have helicopters for various police and parapublic tasks in their portfolios. According to Airbus Helicopters, Europe is a major market for Airbus rotorcraft in law enforcement duties. In Germany, the North Rhine-Westphalia Police Force utilises the H145, H155, and BK117 helicopters. The launch customer for the H145 in its law enforcement version was the Baden Württemberg Police Force. In France, the French Gendarmerie operates more than 50 helicopters, including AS350s, H135s, and EC145s, while the Sécurité Civile operates 34 EC145s. Since the late 1990s, the German Federal Police has operated H155 helicopters equipped with day-and-

night vision cameras, powerful searchlights and hailer systems, among other equipment. This service’s air wing helicopter fleet also includes H135s, which have logged close to 1,000,000 flight hours for police work — representing 20 percent of the H135 family total flight hours – disaster control, and air rescue operations; and the AS332 L1 Super Puma for long-haul operations. Other European law enforcement operators are the London Metropolitan Police, with EC145s; while the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Air Support Unit operates the H135 and EC145.

Bell in Europe Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. company, announced in September 2020 a collaboration agreement with Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH (ESG) to install its Mission Management System in a Bell 429 as a law enforcement demonstrator. This new demonstrator will be used to showcase the aircraft’s capabilities to the police and military markets in Europe and across the globe. ESG’s Mission Management System has set the standard for police surveillance missions by providing state-of-the-art integration of mission equipment. Customers will have the option to purchase the ESG system with their new helicopter, directly from Bell as one purchase. Bell Textron has also signed cooperation agreements with several German suppliers to jointly participate in an upcoming tender by the German Federal Police. Bell will send its latest model, the Bell 525, into the race for the contract to renew the Federal Police's helicopter fleet. The Federal Police needs between 40 and 44 helicopters. The tender is expected to be published this year. The Bell 525 is the first civil series helicopter with a fly-by-wire system; the first Bell helicopter with a fiveblade main rotor; and the first civil series helicopter with a cruise speed of more than 160 knots (296 km/h). Certification of the new helicopter is scheduled for this year.

Leonardo’s ‘Eye in the Sky’

Italian State Police’s AW139 “In Action“

Key Topic at EUROPEAN ROTORS Helicopters in police and parapublic missions will be an important topic at EUROPEAN ROTORS - The VTOL show and safety conference in Cologne, Germany in November. On Thursday, November 18, there will be a dedicated conference session, where the latest challenges and developments in the police/parapublic sector with high-level speakers from different countries will be discussed. “Helicopter police missions in North Rhine-Westphalia past – present – future”; “Experiences with the five-bladed H145 for police missions at the police helicopter unit of Baden-Württemberg as early adaptor”; “Helicopter police missions in the Alpine environment – machine – crew – qualification”; as well as “Migrating from a state aircraft operator to an EASA environment – challenges and advantages” are topics during the conference session. EUROPEAN ROTORS - The VTOL show and safety conference is where the entire rotorcraft industry meets to grow its business and discuss rotorcraft safety and sustainability. For the first time, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the

European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are teaming up to create an exceptional showcase for the European rotorcraft community. The venue will be Hall 8 including the Congress Centre North of Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. EUROPEAN ROTORS will be the unique leading platform offering the industry an exhibition where all stakeholders, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers and operators gather to do business and share knowledge. Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (VTOL) with different levels of autonomy will also feature, as they are an important future technology, either complementary to rotorcraft or offering new dimensions — for instance, in urban environments. More than 125 exhibitors including market leaders such as Airbus Helicopters, Bell, Leonardo Helicopters, Robinson, Safran Helicopter Engines, Boeing Global Services, H+S Aviation Limited, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp, RUAG, ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik GmbH, AEROMETALS and others have already registered for the must-attend event from November 16 to 18.

Police helicopters are equipped to operate at night. © NPAS

Leonardo Helicopters calls its AW139 “the all-seeing eye in the sky”. According to the manufacturer, the AW139 is the market-leading intermediate twin-engine helicopter. Designed specifically to meet the multimission demands of a broad range of customers, it surpasses all other helicopters in its class in capability, speed, range and versatility, says the Italian company. The AW139 is ideally-suited to a wide range of security missions, including area patrol, officer transport, resupply, command and control, medical evacuation and search and rescue operations. The AW139 is the flagship of the AW-Family of products (with AW169 and AW189), providing mixed-fleet operators the advantage of a common design philosophy across platforms.

Police Pilots Law enforcement helicopter pilots are first and foremost police officers. In most countries in Europe, new pilots are recruited from the pool of already trained police officers to guarantee optimal communication between airborne and ground-based units. An understanding of police tactics is also necessary to make the best use of helicopters for the police. Therefore, being “just” a good pilot is not enough for police service.

How Bell Aircraft Strengthen Public Security Forces Across Europe

Bell’s models are widely used around Europe in law enforcement and public safety missions. Bell has a long history in the public security segment. From the world’s first police helicopter, placed into service in 1948, to an ever-expanding role in public safety missions throughout the world, Bell’s commitment has been unwavering to product performance, service and support offerings. The segment has recognised this commitment. As a result, all of Bell’s models are widely used around the world in Airborne Law Enforcement (ALE) and public safety missions.

For the SNP, its Air Support Division has its aircraft available 24/7 in case of any emergency. They work alongside alpine rescue services and navigate mountain ranges to save trapped or injured individuals. When the SNP isn’t locating missing hikers, the force is protecting its communities through a number of law enforcement missions.

Bell 429 Demonstrator In 2020, we announced our collaboration agreement with ESG to install their Mission Management System in a Bell 429 as a law enforcement demonstrator. The new demonstrator will be used to showcase the aircraft’s capabilities to the police and military markets in Europe and across the globe. “By pairing the reliable Bell 429 with ESG’s Mission Management System, we believe we can provide the best parapublic solution to the region,” said Duncan Van De Velde, managing director, Europe and Russia, Bell. “This aircraft will be a suitable fit for the police and military market around the world.”

Growing European Presence In Europe, the Bell 429 and 407 are selected for the capability and value they bring to law enforcement operations, with about 30 aircraft operating in Europe for these missions. Top law enforcement Bell 429 customers in Europe include the Swedish National Police (SNP), the Slovakian Police, and the Turkish National Police.

The Bell 407 is an exceptional helicopter for all ALE public safety missions from routine patrol to search and rescue. The Polish National Police (PNP) operates three Bell 407GXis for its missions. The PNP has been a long-standing Bell customer for two decades. The Bell 407GXi enables the police operation to serve and protect citizens, as well as maintaining public order and security. Leveraging advanced technology, the aircraft allows passengers and pilots to maintain situational awareness and readiness.

Known for its spacious and easily configurable cabin, the Bell 429 holds proven flight hours completing various operations in vastly different terrains and climates. The aircraft possesses more cabin space than any other light twin helicopter, with flat flooring and seating for seven passengers or one flight crew.

This November, we are looking forward to being at European Rotors in Cologne, Germany. We will be showcasing the Bell 429 law enforcement demonstrator. Please stop by the Bell booth to learn more about the Bell 429 and other our products and services.

OCTOBER 2021 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE 9

BUCHER OCT21.qxp_Layout 1 10/09/2021 18:48 Page 1

BUCHER Lightening the Load & Adding Value Bucher’s innovative combination of select materials allows operators to reduce every unnecessary gram of weight and make optimal use of available space. Rolf Kraus, Director Sales & Programs MIC, Medical Systems, shared his insights into the field of police aviation units equipping their aircraft with increasing flexible and modular systems. Q. Have you seen demand for equipment onboard police helicopters increase in recent years as forces have invested in their fleet’s mission capabilities? A. We have witnessed an increase in police forces looking for modularity and the ability to expand their mission profile without limiting their existing profiles. We have now developed a flexible and modular system for air rescue, our AC67 flex, which police forces can also use for rescue missions and remain adaptable due to the 100 per cent single-equipment option within the helicopter’s mission profiles. Q. Is there a standard set of equipment you fit onboard police helicopters, and how is this set customisable for a particular unit’s mission parameters? A. As described above, we have developed the AC67 flex to be a complete oneequipment EMS kit. As it can be scaffolded within 20 minutes and equipped within 10 minutes, the operator’s existing mission profiles are not affected. Q. User feedback is key to ongoing product evolution and improvement. Have aerial law enforcement units been active in engaging with you to discuss developing the products they need? A. First and foremost, we are constantly in close contact with many air rescue organisations that make use of our products, and such communication is key to ongoing product refinement and innovation. It is partly because of these relationships with providers of air rescue services that we can provide a fully functional HEMS kit that meets the needs of police aviation operations as well. We have focused on rescue missions with the AC67 flex. However, we are used to adapting our equipment to other mission profiles with appropriate customisation options, and are always open to receive specific requests from operators.

VRM Switzerland Creates World’s First Certificated VR Flight Simulator VRM Switzerland says new simulator technology reduces risk in flight training and helicopter operations.

Meanwhile, Heli Academy operates an R22 unit and Kopter is the first OEM to order a version for its AW09 helicopter. Helitrans in Norway, Heli Austria Flight Academy, and Colorado Highland Helicopter in the USA are customers outside of Switzerland.

Cutting-edge technology allows pilots to train for critical situations more safely and realistically than using conventional flight training devices. VRM Switzerland, which claims to be the market leader in this field, has developed the world’s first certified virtual reality (VR) helicopter training solution that moves training of highrisk manoeuvres into a simulator. This reduces operational risk during practice and enables pilots to improve their competencies for safer operations during daily work.

“We are pleased to work with such professional companies to improve flight safety and to make flight training more cost-efficient and environment friendly,” underlined Fabi Riesen. Until the end of the year, interested companies can still benefit from “extremely advantageous packages”, Fabi confirmed.

High-Tech & Swiss Quality A sophisticated overall system creates a full-body immersion. This gives the pilot the feeling of sitting in a real helicopter:

Creditable Training Time In spring 2021, EASA qualified the first VR technology based FNPT II, which was developed and built by the team of VRM Switzerland. Unique features include a specially developed highly dynamic motion platform and a pose-tracking system to display the pilot’s movements in the virtual world. This gives the feeling of sitting in a real helicopter. With this qualified simulator, training time can be credited to flight training courses. Using the Robinson R22 as an example, EASA allows five hours of credit for a PPL and 10 or 25 hours for a CPL, depending on the training concept. Hence the acquisition of a training solution can be worthwhile even for companies with a small number of students and pilots. Among other things, the simulator is ideal for learning hovering and other basic manoeuvres. Various emergency procedures, such as autorotations with landing and tail-rotor failure, can be practiced safely. The system also allows training of scenarios that are not feasible or too dangerous with the real helicopter. Through targeted practice, the pilots’ competencies are thus optimally developed.

• • •

“Our team is developing a version of the Airbus Helicopters H125 that will follow later this year. The device will enable operators to conduct licence and operator proficiency checks. A HESLO (Helicopter external sling-load operations) training course will be available as an add-on to practice such operations according to the mirror and vertical reference technique,” said Fabi Riesen, CEO of VRM Switzerland.

VRM Switzerland: A Strong Team

Industry Recognises Potential Mountainflyers Ltd. in Switzerland was the launch customer for the R22 and H125 devices. Air Zermatt also operates an H125 version. “Air Zermatt is proud to be part of the certification process of the H125 VRM Switzerland simulator. This is a big step towards affordable and efficient helicopter training,” said Gerold Biner, CEO of Air Zermatt.

A unique feature is the highly dynamic motion platform, developed and built in-house. It allows the pilot to precisely feel the finest changes in attitude and touchdown on the ground. A numerical simulation enables the realistic representation of flight behaviour. The cockpit is exactly modelled on the real helicopter. A pose-tracking system maps the pilot’s movements in the virtual environment, enabling operation of the cockpit including haptic perception. In addition, the software is optimised for VR glasses. “This has the great advantage that the pilot has exactly the same visual representation as in the real helicopter, which is unique. All other technologies such as mixed-reality glasses or dome projections have limitations in this area, which have a negative impact on training,” commented Fabi Riesen. An intuitively operated instructor operating station supports the instructor in conducting meaningful lessons.

VRM Switzerland proclaims itself “a market leader in the development and construction of VR simulators for the training of helicopter pilots.” The company has an innovative team of 30 passionate engineers, highly specialised developers, and dedicated aviation experts. All mechanical designs and electronic circuits are designed and coordinated in-house. Another strength of the team is its proximity to flight schools and operators. This enables the development of sophisticated training solutions with optimal benefits. The next step is the certification of the simulators by the FAA, said the company. for the Aerokopter AK1-3 light helicopter, “The AK1-3 is a best in class two-seat piston helicopter with features found only in larger helicopters.” Although only approved for full registration in the Ukraine, 102 have been delivered to some 21 countries with roles varying from pilot training to aerial crop spraying, game capture, cattle mustering, commercial aerial photography and so on. Aileron describes the helicopter, as “A true professionally built helicopter with excellent operational margin and high manoeuvrability. Superb gust-spread safety, autorotation characteristics and state of the art components will set the standard for the light helicopter of the future.” It burns 30 litres an hour and according to the company is cheaper to run than similarly sized helicopters, while having more payload capability than the Robinson R22. The AK1-3 is not yet certificated in US or Europe. However one 2008 model AK1-3, serial number 1001, is registered in the USA (FAA) in the ExperimentalExhibition category.

History of Aerokopter Aerokopter was founded in 1999 in the Ukraine, Europe. To help its young aeronautics sector following the break-up of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s,

the Ukraine State Border Committee began to source a light helicopter for border control purposes. The Ak-5 ‘Sanka’, named after the chief designer who died in a motor hang-glider accident, was the first helicopter model produced, making its maiden flight on 12 October 2001. The current model is the AK-3, which made its maiden flight in July 2003. The model is certified for the Ukraine only and must therefore be categorised as an experimental aircraft in all other countries. The first four helicopters were sold to South Africa. “During service, it became clear that for hot climate conditions and intensive loads we must modify design and improve the helicopter’s characteristics,” said the company. “We developed the modification programme, changed some elements of construction, and conducted tests… Now as a result of two years’ work, we have a helicopter which has proved itself even in harsh conditions such in Africa where there is a lot of dust and high temperatures. And today there are already 20 our helicopters in Africa.”

The Helicopter Maintenance Market Today By Ty Corley and Grégory A. Krulic – Jet Support Services, Inc. (JSSI) Ty Corley

Helicopter Technical Advisor

Jet Support Services, Inc.

Grégory A. Krulic

Director, Business Development Jet Support Services, Inc.

Over the past 18 months helicopters have been used for a variety of different missions linked to Covid-19, including those outside of their usual scope, such as repatriating displaced citizens and transporting medical goods and personal protective equipment to countries in need. Despite the specific challenges aviation has faced, demand for helicopter services has remained consistent throughout the pandemic. Providing hourly cost maintenance (HCM) programmes, parts support, and advisory services to helicopter owners and operators globally for more than 30 years, Jet Support Services, Inc. (JSSI), is well placed to examine helicopter operations in Europe, fleet maintenance needs and the options available to operators to ensure efficient operations. Ty Corley, helicopter technical advisor at JSSI and technical chairman of the British Helicopter Association (BHA), and Grégory A. Krulic, director of business development at JSSI, discuss some of the current industry challenges and opportunities: Q. The Covid-19 crisis had an impact on all areas of aviation. How did it affect JSSI’s helicopter customers?

Krulic: It’s the ability to bring an alternative to the market that our customers really appreciate. The message from the market is clear: choice is important.

Krulic: Across both the HCM and parts side of the JSSI business, we have seen a consistent trend between helicopter hours flown and the type of operations. For example, when the pandemic hit, VIP helicopter usage dropped off for approximately two months. During this time, JSSI took a comprehensive approach to supporting customers with a relief plan while they were not flying. In June 2020, we started to see VIP customers flying again.

Corley: In addition, JSSI is buying stock from the OEMs too, so everyone benefits.

Corley: Since the pandemic, we have seen an increase in emergency medical services (EMS) helicopters and VIP transport. EMS utilisation has not been reduced by the pandemic; in fact, its usage became even more relevant and twin-engine aircraft, such the Airbus H145 and AgustaWestland AW169, are selling well to keep up with demand. On the VIP charter side of the market, in 2021 we are experiencing a resurgence of utilisation. This can partly be attributed to the return of popular public events in the UK, such as Royal Ascot and the F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone, which are both significant events for the helicopter industry. Krulic: In Europe, nearly all our helicopter customers are either EMS or VIP operators. The industry knows that JSSI can deliver. They trust us and know we can find solutions quickly through our network, no matter if it is the weekend or overnight. Corley: At the peak of the crisis, there was a drive by the BHA for collaboration between UK charter organisations and the UK Department for Transport (DfT). It meant that if the DfT needed transportation for anything Covid related, the BHA would put out a call to all signed up operators to support the requirement. Q. Let’s talk about helicopter services in Europe. What are the current options? Corley: Historically, OEMs have relied on service and distribution centres to hold stock to support any aircraft-on-ground (AOG) requirements. However, this is not always the most efficient option. As an alternative, JSSI has access to a worldwide network of suppliers to offer customers additional support options. In certain circumstances JSSI will consider the provision of consignment stock at our customers’ locations, especially high-value or lowavailability parts.

Q. How does the European market look for parts availability? Corley: Parts support for AOG situations is one challenge that many operators come to us with. JSSI provides customers with a single point of contact, Grégory or myself for example, and we are able to source part numbers through JSSI Parts & Leasing’s vast worldwide vendor network. This is in addition to putting consignment stock in customer locations based on their expected operations and AOG needs. Krulic: Sourcing certain parts can be tricky in some countries; however, we are able to locate parts anywhere in the world for our customers. Parts shipment is also becoming more challenging and JSSI has a network in place to ensure delivery can me made smoothly at the earliest opportunity. Corley: We also cover the entire aircraft. In a lot of cases, a helicopter has a different OEM for its engine, airframe and avionics so traditionally you would need to go to different providers for HCM programs. JSSI is a one-stop shop for the whole helicopter. Krulic: We’re here to give helicopter operators a choice. Customers can compare service levels and financial projections to find the right fit for them. At the end of the day, JSSI is a service company, we live for our customers and aim to be as flexible as possible. Q. What other challenges are helicopter operators facing now? Corley: On top of any Covid-related issues, Brexit has of course caused several operational challenges in Europe, including amplifying the lack of licensed engineers in the market. Notably, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority accepts European Union Aviation Safety Agency rated engineers, but the agreement is currently not reciprocated. Krulic: A challenge larger helicopter operators face is when they need to change their aircraft or type of operations. These operators are typically more cashflow-oriented and need a service that’s flexible enough to adapt with them, rather than keeping them tied into something unsuitable. This is another area where JSSI’s independence and flexibility can help.

THE HIGHEST EVER FLIGHT IN A HELICOPTER – 42,500FT

Following on from our article about Fred North’s movie work in the last issue of GA Buyer Europe,

here we recount Fred’s amazing 2002 world altitude record in a helicopter. Around thirty years after the record set by Jean Boulet using an SA315B ‘Lama’ helicopter, Fred North, professional pilot, took an AS350B2 ‘Squirrel’ to the fantastic altitude of 12,954m (42,500ft). Here’s how he did it.

How is it possible to beat the world altitude record for a helicopter? North spent two years thinking about it. As he was starting up the turbine of his Squirrel AS350B2 at Cape Town International Airport, South Africa, on Saturday 23rd March 2002, North didn’t feel like being a test pilot or risking life and limb. For a professional helicopter pilot like Fred, with 8,500 flying hours (including 5,000 hours on the Squirrel) and his own company specialising in aerial work, the challenge itself was enough. As soon as the idea came to him, North started to think through the technical, physical, and psychological challenges. He wondered too if his audacity went too far. And in few seconds, the film of his life played back to him, reminding him what he had done to get there…

Helicopter Performance A light 5-6 seat helicopter, no matter which one, is not built to fly at such high altitudes. This type of aircraft is more likely to fly short connections at low altitude. On the other hand, flights in the mountains often required powerful helicopters capable of exceptional take-off performance.

PHOTO © IGOR MEIJER

26 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2021

In its own time the SA315B ‘Lama’ met this need. It worked so well that dozens of them are still operating nowadays, especially in mountainous areas. Even though the power-to-weight ratio was less impressive than the Lama’s, the Squirrel helicopter still met the needs of the aerial operators working in inaccessible zones, particularly at altitude.

FRED NORTH.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 10/09/2021 08:37 Page 2

AS350B2 should logically follow. At the end of his calculation, the director of Air Service Maintenance estimated the needed time of flight to reach the objective at 1 hour, 29 minutes. In the event it would be done in 1 hour and 35 minutes…

Flying High! Cape Town International Airport, South Africa. The weather was fantastic. 200 kg lighter compared to its normal configuration, the Squirrel took off. It has a total weight of 1048 kg, 25% of fuel in the tank (132 litres), and minimum equipment on board – a little VHF radio, altimeter, the engine indicators and a Mode C transponder. With all that, Fred crossed his fingers. His trust in his colleagues was total. But it was on his shoulders that the hopes relied. The South African civil aviation authorities, enthusiastic, watched over. His friends, tense but happy for him, were supporting him. No reverse gear was possible! “I didn’t want to do it anymore. Too much pressure and high risks, even though they were calculated; it was difficult on a psychological level. But of course it was too late to give up,” recalled North. A previous test flight had been necessary for the pilot to understand the high altitude — he went up to 10,000m “just to have a look” – but still the uncomfortable unknown remained. The ascent started. Everything was fine on board. Stress was rising and would be present all the way through. Fred didn’t enjoy the view of the clear blue sky. The magnificent Cape of Good Hope showed the extreme limits of the continent in between the two oceans. The sunlight, getting brighter and brighter, irradiated the interior of the Squirrel. His oxygen mask was giving little by little the vital air to the pilot. The turbine and the rotor worked properly. Approaching 8,000 metres, the physical risks became real. In fact, it would be very risky if he wasn’t wearing a thorax compression jacket, as the air in his lungs without external pressure could kill him. Even so, something started to bother North. More and more as he was going up towards the big blue, the pilot felt his jacket blowing abnormally. He started to have trouble breathing. A quick call on the radio to the technicians on the ground confirmed his intuition. The regulator valve pressure didn’t work properly. If he didn’t act quickly, Fred might suffocate. The problem was located: his parachute strap, tightened on his shoulder, stubbed out the valve. With his left hand, Fred managed to put his fingers through his suit, and in extremis, to deflate the jacket. After a few anxious minutes, he was breathing normally again. He had made it.

Record Attempt

“This guy is crazy”

When he decided to go through with his record project, Fred North didn’t think twice. He planned to make the attempt on the altitude record in a Squirrel. But his target, even with a modern and reliable engine, still faced more difficulties. During the previous months, before ‘D-day’, Fred approached the manufacturer of the helicopter and its engine (Eurocopter and Turbomeca, respectively) while contacting the French Civil Aviation Authority, the DGAC. The latter was not enthusiastic.

This unwanted test didn’t diminish his mental strength. Confidence was coming back to him. But he still needed to go further up. The atmosphere in the cabin was unreal. The distance between the ground and Fred was growing. Breathtaking — 38,500 feet. On the radio, a human voice breaks into the cold silence. “What’s that?” questioned the Boeing 747 pilot from South African Airways, flying in the area. On his radar, an unusual echo. “It is just a French man who is attempting to break the world record in a helicopter. Don’t worry…,” answered the air traffic controller in Cape Town.

Jean Boulet, the owner of the world record certified by the International Federation of Aeronautics, re-opened his files and offered Fred North his flight report, from June 1972. This valuable document contained basic information. For this intrepid pilot, this help was going to be decisive.

Choice of Site and Equipment As the French regulator didn’t want to authorise the record attempt, Fred North went in search of another, more welcoming location. “Why not South Africa?,” he asked. “I had good memories of aerial work I had over there. Furthermore, the weather conditions, at this time of the year, are ideal. I remembered some conversations with South African glider pilots. For them rising wind currents were numerous and acted like pumps. I knew I would need them,” Fred explained. For the shipment of the Squirrel to Cape Town, Dave Mouton, a local operator and boss of a local helicopter company, came up with a solution. Instead of the motorised AS350B2, a new Arriel 1D1 engine was loaned. But two obstacles still remained: the oxygen equipment, and the study of the flight plan — both were critical to success. With no way to pressurise the cabin of the Squirrel, oxygen equipment and a special suit were supplied (including a parachute) by an American firm. The flight parameters were entrusted to Daniel Le Godec, an outstanding technician, and director of the company Air Service Maintenance. “More than preparing the helicopter technically, we had to calculate performance as precisely as possible regarding the peculiar parameters that Fred would have to go through,” pointed out Le Godec. Thanks to Jean Boulet’s flight report, Daniel and Fred managed to extrapolate mathematically the flight curves and to project the lines that the

“Is he crazy?” yelled the pilot of the Boeing. Fred didn’t miss a word. What if he was right? The drama of the situation didn’t eliminate all the efforts made during those last months. Fred was not crazy. Or just enough to exceed the limits. But the pilot didn’t think about that. He had other priorities! As they thought, the higher it went, the slower the Squirrel got. The power of the engine was four times less in this atmosphere than at a lower altitude. He had to keep on getting the rising currents, the famous pump. The minutes stretched little by little. Psychological pressure was high. Higher, higher and higher… The vibrating waves that the rotor made were unusual. Mechanically, the engine arrived at its maximum level of performance. The helicopter went up and down and up again. Fred fought with the stratospheric molecules. It had been an hour and a half that he was in the air. The limits had been reached. It was time to go down now. The previous experience of Jean Boulet shared, Fred decreased slowly the collective pitch to avoid a flame out and engine failure. Everything was fine. The helicopter was slowly going down. A little more pressure on the collective pitch and the turbine shut down — but they had anticipated this possibility. On autorotation, the Squirrel kept on track. The pilot remembered the best moment to restart the motor. At 12,000 feet, the turbine can be reactivated and the engine can continue normally. Fred North got back to the departure point, happy but exhausted. “I will never do it again!” As a message from the heart, as a confession, these words tell us a story. The story of a man who kept his nerve, who went over his own resistance limits, over old demons, over 12,954 meters, somewhere unfathomable.

OCTOBER 2021

The Lifeblood of Humanitarian Aid Operations Have you ever wondered how aid is delivered in the middle of a humanitarian crisis, or how aviation provides critical, specialised support during the initial aftermath? Patrick Ryan answers these benevolent ‘Life Saving’ questions — and more — from the cockpit of the ‘Aerial Work’ aviation sector. Following the hours and days of a natural disaster or during man-made geopolitical conflicts, basic infrastructure (such as streets and bridges) is often destroyed, and transport capacity is significantly impaired or damaged beyond use. Because of this, access to affected areas becomes very difficult or even impossible. In this scenario, aircraft are the most appropriate platforms to reach the victims. To make this happen, the Aerial Work humanitarian air service sector brings together all the capabilities of aviation to help support such unfortunate events, i.e., GA, Air Transportation, and the many unique sectors of Aerial Work aviation.

So, what is Aerial Work Humanitarian Aid? First, in the world of humanitarian aid and assistance, the Humanitarian Program Cycle (HPC) is an organised series of actions undertaken to help prepare for, manage, and deliver humanitarian response. It consists of five elements coordinated seamlessly, with one step sensibly building on the previous and leading to the next. These elements are Needs Assessment & Analysis; Strategic Response Planning; Resource Mobilization; Implementation and Monitoring; and Operational Review and Evaluation. Like the HPC, the answer to the above question follows the same coordinated series of actions.

Needs Assessment & Analysis

What is Humanitarian Aid? Humanitarian aid is information, material, and logistic assistance to help people in need during a crisis. It is primarily short-term help until the long-term help by local authorities and other regional organisations substitutes it. In any giving crisis, the individuals in need are the victims, refugees, and homeless of natural disasters, conflicts, and food crises. Humanitarian aid efforts are given for humanitarian reasons and consist of natural disasters and manmade/instigated conflicts. The bottom line, and the primary goals of humanitarian aid, are to save lives, relieve suffering, and maintain human dignity.

WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com

At the centre of it all is the aviation industry, which plays a pivotal role in assessing the situation, distributing food, medical supplies, and shelter materials. In addition, humanitarian air services, as mentioned before, are particularly critical in conditions when collapsing or washed away infrastructure or ongoing geopolitical conflict essentially cuts off ground access to entire regions.

Strategic Response Planning

How does Aerial Work aviation Support Humanitarian Operations? For many international crises unfolding today and expected in the future, there is a continued need. In any given year, billions of dollars of supplies will be required, and their donated delivery will be made possible by the aviation sector. As a small example of one of many humanitarian air services operating around the globe, in 2020, the ‘EU Humanitarian Aid Flight’ organisation provided: • Approximately €14.8 million for EU Humanitarian Aid Flights. • More than €20 million in funding to other non-profit humanitarian air services. • €8 million for EU Humanitarian Air Bridge operations (COVID Relief). • €4.5 million to the United National Global Response Air Service.

Rotary-Wing During the first hours of a crisis, helicopters are critical in making a clear difference and enabling a swift response. Their flexibility and ability to quickly mobilise allow for passengers’ safe movement in demanding environments and support ground rescuers to assess emergencies. Some of the most common or preferred humanitarian helicopters include medium-lift and heavy-lift platforms. An example of these types of aircraft are: • • • • •

Mil, Mi-8 Airbus, H215 Airbus, AS350 Bell Helicopter, Bell 412 Bell Helicopter, Bell 212

Fixed-Wing Fixed-wing aircraft provide the heavy-lift and reach to aid and sustain larger populations over extensive distances following rotary-wing support. The primary types of fixed-wing platforms used in such operations are narrowbody and widebody turboprop and jet aircraft, i.e., cargo or passenger aircraft. Outside of military aircraft used in humanitarian operations, the following make & model platforms can be seen regularly around the world, relieving the misery of others in remote, conflict, or disaster areas: The primary role of aviation in humanitarian emergency response is moving supplies very quickly. They achieve this by transporting resources from pre-positioned hubs, such as Dubai, Panama, or West Africa, where nations, together with partners and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), stockpile essential items. By doing so, the program helps the humanitarian aid community decrease its high logistics costs by distributing quickly medical and water sanitation equipment, food, toys, clothing, and emergency response units (e.g., kitchen sets, medical personnel, household kits, and more) to the most vulnerable all around the world. However, there are other critical and just as essential missions associated with the Aerial Work humanitarian sector. Besides logistics or essential life-sustaining support, the humanitarian air service sectors also provides these specialised but vital functions required by humanitarian aid operations during a disaster: • Mapping & Surveying – Mapping & surveying allows for capturing aerial imagery of relatively small areas and collecting optical imagery where cloud precludes satellite imagery. The imagery collected from aircraft can create accurate twodimensional maps, elevation models, 3D renderings of buildings, and geographic features, among many other things. • Monitoring – Real-time information is critical in delivering aid precisely. Aircraft, integrated with GPS, sensors, and camera systems, create georeferenced live-stream videos for tactical situations to identify and track displaced populations and temporary settlements. • Damage Assessments – Along with mapping and monitoring, aircraft identify and qualitatively record the scope, severity, and location of the effects of a destructive event. • Air Search & Rescue (SAR) – Given the extent and severity of a crisis, air assets are used to search for, rescue, or recover individuals or groups out of immediate harm’s way. • Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) – Air CASEVAC consist of transporting a seriously injured person from the place of injury to a medical or trauma facility. No medical treatment (or medical equipment onboard an aircraft) is provided other than quickly getting a patient to where they can receive urgent medical attention. • Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) – Air MEDEVAC is the organised effort to transport an injured person from one medical facility to another or safer location. Air MEDEVAC aircraft are usually equipped with medical equipment and supplies that can provide en route medical care. • Airdrop – Outside of transitional means of aircraft delivering life-saving supplies, humanitarian aid organisations (including the military) have added

32 AERIAL WORK EUROPE OCTOBER 2021

airdrop (via parachute) operations to their specialised support kit. Humanitarian airdrops are designed to deliver life-saving assistance when there is no other option, i.e., as a last resort. But it is still a risky, complex, and expensive effort. The typical airdrop loads consist of food that can withstand such a dramatic drop - rice, wheat, flour, dried lentils, dried peas, and sugar vs. water and cooking oil.

Resource Mobilisation

What are the types of aircraft and capabilities used in humanitarian operations? Again, in most regions of the world requiring humanitarian assistance, ground travel is impeded by demanding security settings, long distances, and poor ground transportation conditions. Additionally, most of the destinations the humanitarian community needs to reach are not served by adequate commercial air operators. Like so many of the sectors of Aerial Work aviation, the humanitarian air service sector leverages the full spectrum of aircraft to meet the various critical needs of a humanitarian crisis, i.e., including rotary-wing, fixed-wing, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). What they do specifically to aid others is based on their unique capabilities:

• • • • • • • •

Embraer, EMB 135 Boeing, 737 Bombardier, Dash 8 Beech Aircraft Corporation/Raytheon Aircraft Company, Beechcraft 1900 Dornier, Dornier 328 Lockheed, C-130 ‘Hercules’ Cessna, C-208 Caravan Ilyushin, IL-76

Unmanned Aircraft The truth is that the use of UAVs in humanitarian aid is a rapidly emerging field right now. Today, the primary use of UAVs is not delivering large volumes of supplies but providing specialised support, e.g., search & rescue assistance, damage assessments, delivery of microloads of materials (e.g., medicines, specialised equipment, etc.), transporting microbiological samples, and crisis monitoring. Unlike manned aircraft, very small UAVs provide easy access to hard-to-reach confined locations or spaces that are sometimes impossible with traditional aviation resources. Additionally, operating UAVs’ logistical footprint & tail is much smaller than sustaining manned rotor-wing and fixed-wing aircraft in the field, i.e., a better return on donors’ contributions.

GA BUYER ONLINE - AvBUYER.COM

ASOG SEPT21 1.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 10/09/2021 15:07 Page 3

On the downside, currently, UAVs frequently arrive too late or are too disorganised from an operational, in-thefield perspective to be helpful in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Humanitarian aid organisations are addressing this issue by building local or regional networks and integrating UAVs into their regional emergency response toolkits or programs. Additionally, inadequate regulations can be a substantial hindrance to deploying drones in crises. In many countries, regulations do not exist and, where they do exist, they typically do not include conditions for humanitarian emergencies. If you want to know, the types of UAVs humanitarian organizations are currently focused on are small fixedwing and ‘multirotor’ or ‘VTOL’ (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) in supporting their operations. An example of these types of platforms that have or are used in humanitarian aid efforts are: • • • •

SenseFly, eBee-X Zipline, Zipline Matternet, M2 Selex ES (Leonardo), Falco

Implementation and Monitoring

Who provides Aerial Work aviation humanitarian air services? With more geopolitical tensions and natural disasters worldwide, this onerous duty has been put more recently in the hands of multinational organisations and aid agencies to share resources and increase global coverage. Although the reason for this is due to the limitations of civil and military government assets accessible for humanitarian aid, these organisations have in the past decade been shifting to using privately owned assets, especially for aviation, to conduct complex air missions in harsh environments while at the same time maintaining stringent civilian airworthiness requirements. Some of these types of non-government and multinational organisations that arrange and execute humanitarian air services, or the aviation companies that are sub-contracted to support such groups, are: Multi-National Organisations • United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) • United Nations Pacific Humanitarian Air Service • European Union Humanitarian Aid Flight Non-Government (NGO) Organisations • AERObridge • Air Serve • Airlink • Mercy Airlift • SARAID

Corporate Service Providers • Global Helicopter Service GmbH, Germany • Ultimate Aviation Group, South Africa • 748 Air Services Ltd, Kenya

Operational Review and Evaluation

The humanitarian aid outlook scenario for 2021 and beyond remains bleak in urban and rural settings worldwide due to a series of factors, including worsening geopolitical insecurity and a continually changing environment. With this not-so-positive analysis, the Aerial Work aviation Humanitarian Aid sector is postured to continue to intensify efforts to support people in need. Specifically, both manned and unmanned aircraft of all types with their specialised capabilities will continue to be used in transporting critical supplies and medicines, monitor catastrophic conditions, and assess damage at the right time and in the right place. Because of the aircraft’s unique capabilities, the humanitarian aid community can be more effective and efficient in its efforts. Even though the aviation sector is just one small part of a sizable global humanitarian aid community, its contribution can be massively felt within hours and days after a catastrophic incident. Besides civil governments and military units providing such service from the sky, the multi-national, NGO, and corporate aviation communities are picking up more of this service today and will do well into the future. So, the next time you read about a humanitarian catastrophe or through misfortune find yourself in a crisis, be reassured a fleet of aircraft from small UAVs to widebody jet cargo airplanes, along with their professional crews, are coming to the aid of you (and others) to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity. In other words, the Aerial Work humanitarian air service sector is genuinely the ‘Aerial Angels’ of Aviation who will be there for you now and in the future… In other words, “Don’t give up hope…someone will fly far and wide to help you!” I

THE LEADING SHOW FOR GENERAL AVIATION

Spectacular Acts Frame EXTRA’s 40th Anniversary On 21st August 2021, Extra Aircraft company owner and founder, Walter Extra, issued an invitation to folks from all over the aviation industry — partners and clients, as well as good friends and long-time companions — to join him at Dinslaken airfield for the celebration of the 40 anniversary of his enterprise, and to look ahead into the future together. “Walter’s hospitality is legend,” according to the company — and so more than 300 guests arrived on this warm summer’s evening to celebrate life and to enjoy food, drink, and music while having a good time together. “But Extra wouldn’t be Extra had he not had some very special aces up his sleeve for his invitees.” The afternoon started with youngsters flying model aircraft and recreational drones, entertaining invited visitors by giving spectacular demonstrations of their leisure activities.

Aerobatics

April 27 – 30, 2022 Friedrichshafen | Germany

Leading further into the summer evening’s twilight, guests were treated to a special kind of top-class aerobatics, “which one can only expect to come across here, deep inside the core of the aerobatics universe,” said the company. This part of the celebration started with a heart-stopping performance by ex Patrouille-de-France pilot Francois Rallet, who kept onlookers on their toes with his presentation. Following nightfall, British aerobatics ace Mark Jefferies was the next act in Walter Extra’s entertainment program by thrilling the audience with an aerobatics show at night. Covered in a shower of sparks from pyrotechnic devices installed in his Extra SC and combined with further LED lighting and smoke, Mark offered an aerobatics experience of the highest class which surely many of the attendees, including

many industry insiders, had never ever seen before.

Pyrotechnics But the best was yet to come! Around nine at night, Walter Extra finally brought his excellent connections into the world of pyrotechnics to bear. And so, after dark, two top artists in this field conjured up a so-called “pyro-musical” in the skies above the northwestern Ruhr district, which was nothing short of spectacular. As far away as in the city of Essen, people on the ground were mesmerised by the perfect harmony of fireworks and music, from classical all the way to pop tunes, a never-before seen pyrotechnics display which came second to none, not even the well renowned New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney, so “phantastic” was the show, explained Extra.

Airfield Home Dinslaken airfield (to the west of Dortmund) is where Extra Aircraft is rooted, a place that the company has called home for 40 years now. “The Extra brand is not just a melodic name in aerobatics around the globe, but the company has always been and continues to be a reliable partner to service and maintain their clients’ turboprop or piston-powered aircraft, as well,” noted the company. Party guests were grateful for this outstanding summer evening. And so were the victims of the recent flooding in Germany when, on the night, partygoers contributed 5,200 Euros in donations to the relief effort. Truly a feast for sense and the senses that has delighted everyone. So, here’s to the next forty years of Extra Aircraft!

AVIDYNE Unveils Vantage Panel Upgrade for Cirrus SR20/SR22 Avidyne impresses with its all-new Vantage touchscreen flight display system. One of the highlights of EAA AirVenture 2021 was Avidyne’s introduction of its all-new Vantage large-format hybrid touchscreen flight display system retrofit solution for Entegra-equipped Cirrus aircraft. It’s not a stretch to say that Cirrus owners love their aircraft. And with good reason. The SR20 and SR22 are fast, capable, comfortable, and with the CAPS airframe parachute, they’re arguably the “safest” piston singles around. Cirrus owners love their airplanes and are keen to find new ways to increase their ride’s capabilities. That passionate following is one reason Avidyne recently introduced its all-new Vantage 12.1-inch Electronic Flight Display (EFD) upgrade for legacy Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft. Avidyne’s President Dan Schwinn explained that the company had been canvassing its dealers and customers to find out what they wanted in a truly next-generation avionics upgrade over the past few years. “We had received the greatest level of interest and the most consistent fleet upgrade opportunity from owners of the early Cirrus SR20 and SR22s,” he said. “There are nearly 4,000 Avidyne Entegra-equipped Cirrus owners who want something new in the form of a much more capable and consistent upgrade for their aircraft.”

Big Touchscreen Displays “Big displays are clearly what Cirrus owners want, so that’s where we’re going to take the lead in providing with our new Vantage EFD upgrade,” Schwinn continued. “Avidyne’s large, 12.1-inch Vantage hybrid touchscreen displays provide an uncluttered interface and beautiful capabilities that dramatically enhance a pilot’s situational awareness while making flying safer and more enjoyable.” During the Vantage’s Oshkosh AirVenture introduction, Schwinn stated that the Avidyne first Vantage upgrade would be FAA STC’d 2003 through 2008-era Cirrus aircraft. As the programme matures, other aircraft and configurations will be added to the Vantage programme. As part of the FAA STC, said early-generation SR20s and SR22s would have to have been upgraded with a pair of Avidyne’s new IFD-series GPS navigators and the Avidyne DFC-90 digital autopilot. While the Vantage system requires the IFDs and DFC-90, they are not part of the initial Vantage STC package. (More about that later on). Oh, and great news for all Cirrus owners who still love their Avidyne Entegra units; Schwinn stressed that the Vantage upgrade is not an end-of-life programme for the legacy displays. “These are still very capable units, and we know that a lot of Cirrus owners really like them as they are,” he said. “Yes, Vantage is a bigger, better, more capable solution, but we know that some won’t want to upgrade or will want to wait for a while. No matter what they decide to do, Avidyne is committed to providing updates and support for the legacy Entegra displays for a long time to come.”

You’ll want the Vantage upgrade While no doubt the industry will applaud Avidyne’s commitment to supporting its legacy brand, make no mistake, once you see what Vantage is all about, your Entegra units are history!

Let’s start with screen size. While Vantage’s 12.1-inch displays may not sound too much bigger than Entegra’s 10-inch screens, the fact is they are 40-percent bigger with a whopping 64-percent increase in pixel density. Of course, big displays are just the beginning of the many improvements Vantage brings to your Cirrus’s cockpit. Another is Avidyne’s hybrid touchscreen technology, allowing pilots to control all the various functions with buttons, knobs, or via the touchscreen. “They function like our popular IFD-products,” Schwinn said. “Pilots really like their ease of functionality and have been asking when we were going to make something like that in a big-screen product?”

Synthetic Vision “Another differentiator for the Vantage displays is the unique 3D synthetic vision, which is standard with the upgrade,” he continued. “Our system has both an egocentric, out-the-front-window display, and an exocentric view, which gives you the perspective from above and behind the aircraft. “They give the pilot the option to view the situation in the way that’s best for them,” Schwinn added. “That improves overall situational awareness and increases safety.” Speaking of situational awareness, Schwinn said that Vantage also includes a wide assortment of graphical depictions of traffic, weather, terrain, navigational maps, engine information, airport data, and more.

Big displays at a not-so-big price… Now for the information you’ve been waiting for: Avidyne is quoting a retail price of $25,000USD (uninstalled) for the dual Vantage 12.1-inch upgrade, and that includes trading in the Entegra cores. “It’s not chump change, but in today’s avionics market, it’s really a pretty darn good deal considering all you get with Vantage: dual 12.1” displays with hybrid touch, WiFi connectivity to your iPad and other devices, 3D synthetic vision, terrain, obstacle, and traffic displays, built-in ARSs – the list goes on and on. Plus, no doubt it will deliver a significant boost to the Cirrus’ resale value,” said Schwinn. The only caveat is that your Cirrus must be equipped with Avidyne’s IFDseries GPS navigators and the DFC-90 digital autopilot. They’re part of the initial FAA STC approvals. Adding those will, of course, add to the total cost of the package. Schwinn explained that once the Vantage upgrade makes it to market, the company will systematically add other variations to the STC allowing the integration of other third-party avionics. “Vantage is our total refreshing of Avidyne’s aggressive participation in the big display upgrade business and is our core product architecture going forward for a long time,” he concluded. “People expect us to bring out products that are different from the competition. Vantage is a significant market entry and gives us a platform to keep doing that for a long time.”

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE !

THE BUSINESS OF INSURANCE

Insure Your Business!

Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), Beverley Meads Recreation Ground, Barham Road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, SW20 0ET UK. For further information please contact

Chris Varley, Director, Export & General Insurance Services Ltd T: +44 (0)20 8255 0617 M: +44 (0) 7973 509961 E: chris.varley@exportandgeneral.co.uk

The highly regulated worlds of aviation and insurance: the former needs the latter, a symbiotic relationship for one of the most high-technology, risk-managed industries in the world. It has taken more than one hundred years for aviation to create a culture that minimises risk from what is an incredible achievement, but things still can and do go wrong — just far less often, thankfully. With that, you’d have thought insurance would be a lot cheaper for flying but in fact the market dynamics of the insurance industry — with fewer underwriters taking on aviation risks — have pushed premiums up for insuring aircraft.

The Good News… Luckily businesses in aviation are still “businesses” and, in this respect, according to Chris Varley of E&G Aviation Insurance,

they still enjoy quite a bit of choice. So, a broker such as E&G has quite a bit of scope to shop around for its clients to ensure ‘businesses that happen to be in the aviation industry’ can get competitive insurance quotes. BUT, says Varley, please don’t leave it too late to get a quote. A broker needs time to shop around and fine-tune the requirement to your particular needs. There should be a few weeks or even months available for this before your current insurance expires, with the first week or two needed just to analyse what cover is best, what to include and not to include and at what levels. If you run an aviation maintenance business, a training school, an airfield, or even organise aviation events or do anything related to aviation, please let E&G know so they can start to get to know you, and plan for your insurance needs.

The Mighty Spitfire

MH415

The Concorde… Harrier… the ‘Jumbo’… and the mighty Spitfire!… if you’re playing ‘Top Trumps’ these are the cards you want! These are the aircraft that helped shape the evolution of aeronautics in so many ways and the aircraft that inspire us all still today. They appeal equally if you’re old or if you’re young, whether you’re an enthusiast or a pilot. These are almost timeless aircraft. They have the ‘X-Factor’ and to be near one is nothing short of a privilege. So, imagine my excitement when not only was I walking around one beautiful Mk. IX Spitfire, but it was one of the most original and complete examples flying in the world today. But before we get to formal intros, let’s take a moment to see where it’s roots first took grip…

King of the Castle Dating all the way back to an Air Ministry paper released in 1931, the Spitfire seed was first sown. From there it evolved at an exponential rate as WWII approached with the first production Spitfires rolling off the line in mid-1938. The Spitfire’s calling was to be a short-range, highspeed interceptor. The man behind the aircraft was of course R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works. He sadly died in 1937, before actual production of his design got underway, so his right hand man Joe Smith took

48 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE OCTOBER 2021

the role of team leader and became Chief Designer following Mitchell’s death. Castle Bromwich was to be the hub of Spitfire production (1940 to 1945) and by the time the rollout ceased in June 1945, some 12,000 Spitfires had been built there, including 5,665 Mk. IX’s. Castle Bromwich at its peak production was producing 320 Spitfires a month! Yes, a month! All told, some 24 Marks of Spitfire came through various production assembly lines, but of all these, the Mk. IX is perhaps the most sought after. Interestingly, the Mark numbers didn’t always progress in chronological order. Due to mounting pressure in the skies from the dominating German-built Focke-Wulf Fw 190, the Mk. IX was quickly brought forward and existed between the Mk. VII and VIII aircraft. The Mk. IX is powered by a huge, 27-litre V-12 Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, featuring a two-stage supercharger and developing a whopping 1,705 hp at sea level! Not to mention it has a service ceiling of just over 42,000 ft (higher than a Boeing 737!). And, of course, it features (as many other Marks did) the stunning elliptical wing. By the way… where did that come from? A gentlemen by the name of Beverly Shenstone is largely credited with the elliptical wing design. Essentially the requirement was to reduce drag

GA BUYER ONLINE - AvBUYER.COM

Historic Aircraft.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 22/09/2021 09:11 Page 2

with the lowest possible ‘thickness to chord’ wing design, yet it still needed to accommodate the retractable landing gear and associated systems and be armed with wing-mounted guns. Between Shenstone and Mitchell they concluded that the ellipse shape provided the aerodynamic requirements they needed while also providing a wing of the thinnest possible design, and at the same time still leaving space for sufficient strength in the structure and “the things we wanted to cram in.” That is a genuine quote from Shenstone, and he concluded with “…and it looked nice [too].” So it was a real case of Form, Fit, Function — and boy did they get it right!

MH415

A Star is Born

This aircraft, ‘MH415’ (now registered G-AVDJ), was built, like many before it, by the Castle Bromwich Aeroplane Factory as a Mk. IX aircraft in 1943 with construction number CBAF 5542. But the truly amazing thing about this aircraft is that it remained in a fully assembled condition from the date of manufacturer right through to its restoration, which was started in 2015 (other than for shipping and maintaining it). That is very, very unusual for a 78-year old wartime aircraft!

During filming for the Battle of Britain in 1968, MH415 was used extensively for aerial sequences, not just in the UK but also over in Spain where a very busy Aerial Unit was shooting (not literally this time!) a huge scene involving German fighters and bombers. The footage was then put together with other scenes filmed in the UK and France involving Spitfires and Hurricanes.

And it’s got combat history too. Most notably, on the 24th September 1943, MH415 claimed a Fw 190 “victory” north-west of Amiens in France whilst being flown by F/O Desmond F. Ruchwaldy during ‘Ramrod 242’, a mission to escort 12 Mitchell bombers detailed to attack the Amiens Marshalling Yards. This mission, along with many others, is documented in the aircraft records, which also include the original RAF Operations Record Books.

To give the sequence in Spain continuity they ferried down one sole Spitfire, which was none other than MH415! So she found herself in a sky full of fighters and bombers once more, although this time in a more friendly setting. The Aerial Unit used 28 Buchons to play the part of the

Messerschmitt 109s (including our Buchon ‘White 9’, see GA Buyer, August edition) and a number of CASA 2.111s which played the part of the Heinkel HE 111s. The landscape around southern Spain was considered similar enough to resemble France and Britain, so the footage all merged together very well. After the filming in Spain was complete, MH415 was flown back to the UK but was promptly added to the call sheet again when production needed her for more shots, this time in the South of France where the aircraft spent three weeks filming. After that, MH415 flew back to the UK to carry out a few more sorties for some ‘bail out’ shots. By the end of all that filming, MH415 had accumulated some 125 hour of flying for the movie.

MH415 flew in combat with both 129 and 222 Squadrons covering some 55 missions. Following WWII, in 1946, the aircraft was sold to the Dutch Air Force and was dispatched in 1947 directly to Java as a ground-attack aircraft. In 1950 the aircraft was shipped to Holland and placed in storage until 1952 when it was sold to the Belgium Air Force. A systems overhaul was carried out at Schiphol Airport before it was ferry flown over to Koksijde in Belgium. It remained with the Belgium Air Force until 1956. Moving from Military to Civilian life saw a whole series of new adventures unfold for the aircraft, including towing a drone for target practice in Belgium and even as a film star in both the 1962 film ‘The Longest Day’ (staring John Wayne and Richard Burton) and of course, perhaps the most famous of all wartime movies, the 1969 blockbuster ‘The Battle of Britain’!

To the States and Back! The aircraft didn’t have much of a breather before it was purchased by private collector Wilson ‘Connie’ Edwards (along with a number of the Buchons). The aircraft was shipped to Connie’s base in Texas, USA and was registered as N415MH (nice choice Connie!) and he added the 222 Sqn. markings to the aircraft livery. Connie flew the aircraft occasionally in the US through to 1973 when it was placed in long-term storage (alongside a number of the Buchons).

The aircraft remained in storage (still fully assembled) right through to 2015 when it was sold to a private buyer in Australia. The aircraft was fully disassembled (for the first time since production, other than just partially for the purposes of shipping or maintenance) and a thorough restoration was started. This was eventually finished by world renowned Spitfire specialist ‘Air Leasing’ back here in the UK. The

aircraft was test flown in April this year and the pictures displayed herewith (which were done for this article) were taken just a few weeks ago in August (flown by Richard Grace). As stated in the introduction, this is one of the most original Spitfires in the world. As it stands today she is over 95% original per the day she rolled off the production line! The only other Spitfire that can claim the same is, would you believe, just up the road! So if MH415 sounds at all familiar, it might be that you have read about, or even seen fly, her sister ship (also a Mk. IX) MH434. This family member (which isn’t for sale, whereas MH415 is) is based out of Duxford and owned, maintained and operated by the excellent Old Flying Machine Company. Not only were these two aircraft built in the same production batch at Castle Bromwich, but they both served in combat and scored victories in 222 Sqn. (and both recorded victories over an FW190!). MH434 is probably the best-known Mk. IX in the world, and for good reason; it is likewise amazingly original, it’s an exceptional example and is beautifully maintained. To now have both these aircraft flying, and both flying in the UK, is actually an outstanding bit of luck and something very special for the Spitfire community and indeed the warbird world as a whole. We are very much looking forward to opportunities in seeing these two aircraft flying together! I am sure you will agree that the story of MH415 is something very special indeed. Not only is it a type that’s regarded by many as one of the most iconic shapes to ever take to the sky, but it’s also an ‘exceptional’ example of that type. And I hope you enjoyed seeing the pics from the recent formation shoot, we certainly enjoyed taking them! Look out for more soon!

Flight Experiences… and More! Air Leasing / Warbird Flights offer flight experiences in their two-seat Mk. IX (ML407) aka the ‘Grace Spitfire’. You can genuinely try some ‘hands on flying’ in a Spitfire, or maybe go play ‘tail chase’ with a Buchon (license built Messerschmitt 109) for the ultimate warbird flying experience!

WHEN CABIN SPACE IS AT A PREMIUM, FILL SEATS WITH PASSENGERS, NOT LUGGAGE

Wherever your King Air takes you, never compromise cabin space again. Raisbeck’s Crown Wing Lockers are capable of carrying up to 600 pounds of total cargo in 17 cubic feet of secure, watertight space outside the cabin — not only greatly expanding the utility of your aircraft by accommodating more passengers plus additional luggage, but also helps prevent interior wear and tear. It’s an upgrade that makes flying more convenient. Offering a streamlined design that not only provides the extra storage needed outside the cabin, but without any performance loss. A smart investment that makes a great aircraft even better!

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
