ANNUAL REPORT WORLD FAMILY OF RADIO MARIA ONLUS
1
LETTER OF THE PRESIDENT In this fourth edition of the Annual Report we tried to give as much information as possible about the activities and the results of our organization. As always we believe transparency is our obligation and responsibility towards all those people who entrust us with their continues and generous support. It is for this reasons that also in 2014 we tired to do our best to fulfil our mission of bringing Radio Maria to all the people who request for it.
We are involved in several projects of which you will find information in the report. As President of this organization I would like to underline the tremendous effort that we are making in responding to the call of many that find in Radio Maria a tool not only of hope and consolation, but also of spiritual and human development. Although the crisis that western world experienced in the past years, and due to that, the economical difficulties even our organization had to deal with, we kept on working hard trying to restructure and optimize our resources to achieve the wanted results. Thanks to the support received from all our Associate Members and the Grace of God we managed to open three new Radio Maria in 2014, and to boost some of the projects which will see their accomplishment in 2015. Our Associate Members had the strength to respond to the World Family’s call for a wider support and more links are going to be created to act as a mature community of friends or, better to say, like a real family where each member feels responsible for one another. This is the strength of our organization: to be one family of people who want to serve people through a good and edificatory communication. World Family is responsible towards them for assuring that their resources are used well to accomplish the mission of making people grow and contribute to a better society wherever we act. I believe we are on the right track, and through this report you can get a glimpse of that. Enjoy the reading Regards Emanuele Ferrario, WFRM President

INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
World Family of Radio Maria ONLUS commitment to support organizations in improving life of people around the world was assured even in 2014. The betterment of life conditions, considering the human being in a holistic way, has always been our concern. It is for this reason that World Family continues to work closely with its partners in developing countries in programs to improve social, economic, cultural and spiritual life. In 2014 sixteen new projects started besides the ones in which World Family was already involved in all five continents. The main areas of interventions are education, cultural development and spiritual growth by broadcasting radio programs to a larger and larger number of people. To allow that in many cases World Family directly supported local partners in improving technological infrastructure, in other cases with training programs, in others by giving life to new stations or renovating some which could not permit a sufficient performance. Some partners requested World Family’s expertise to expand their catchment capacities to arrive to a wider number of people; like in Sierra Leone and Guatemala where more transmission points were installed. For others, World Family collaborated by renovating studios and broadcasting systems, like in Cameroun, Mozambique, Macedonia. In some countries World Family supported local organizations to assist and improve the conditions of minority groups like the Hungarians in Serbia and Romania. In 2014 the old dream of collaborating directly with Universities for the development of skills in journalism and broadcasting was revamped. In fact, after the past experiences in Italy, in 2014 we started cooperating with Universities in Cameroun, Rwanda and Tanzania for courses in Peace Journalism and Communication for Development, which encountered the enthusiasm not only among students, but also media and government institutions that showed their interest to support such programs. Courses started already in Tanzania in cooperation with the University of Saint Augustine in Songea and in 2015 also in Cameroun and Rwanda they will be activated. We have continued our efforts to train people around the world because we believe it is our responsibility to make sure the organizations we work with, give a top class service to their clients. We do it by empowering our partners that in years have specialized in giving professional training courses in Africa, Latin America and East Europe. A total of 161 people were trained in 2014 in these three parts of the world. The contribution of World Family was not only in terms of financial support, but also by providing experts and professionals for some of the key training sessions. All these are commitments that World Family will carry on even in the following years, especially considering that most of the projects are planned for three consecutive years. The future challenges will be definitely the expansion of many radio networks in Africa like in Congo and in Democratic Republic of Congo, in Kenya, in Uganda and in Zambia, but also in the American continent (El Salvador, Perù) and in Asia (Philippines) as many are the requests from organizations in those areas to be assisted by World Family in order to deliver their programs. In the course of the years we saw most of our partners growing in their countries. With them our collaboration has changed from institutional, financial and operational assistance into aid for development. It is the case of Burundi and Rwanda where the local associations started building their new headquarters on their own and requested World Family to provide only part of the technology used to deliver their services. It is a sign that the seed which was spread in the past is growing and it is given more and more fruits. 2014 has been a transaction year towards World Family’s Congress which will be celebrated in October 2015: an event where representatives of all members of World Family from every part of the world will gather. One of the next commitments is the preparation of such Congress. Continental meetings will be organized in Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe in the first part of 2015 to make sure the Congress will be a successful moment to review the triennial work, evaluate results and plan World Family’s future.

77 18 85 9
The main stakeholders of the World Family of Radio Maria are the Associations that share and pursue the same purposes with World Family: they are 77, distributed in 72 countries, roughly 50 of them are in developing countries. Many of the local NGOs and not-for-profit associations, initially set up as counterparts in World Family’s projects, have enhanced their partnership over time and shared with World Family the ideal inspiration and work method, thus originating an informal network that is basically located in the southern regions of the world and in transition countries. Most of the Associations that belong to the network have also become members of World Family, to confirm the existing deep bond and collaboration. The stakeholders are contacted and their involvement is solicited through a monthly newsletter which is currently being revised and which is also published on the Association’s website. Beside it an annual institutional meeting and a few periodical continental meetings for informational and training purposes are held, at least an annual report and a magazine-type publication are published (“Miracle of Volunteers”).

The Chairman Emanuele Ferrario is the legal representative of the Association. The World Family has not appointed a Board of Statutory Auditors because, since its very founding, in order to ensure the highest transparency, it was decided to submit the financial statements to a specific external auditing firm for certification purposes. Once they are approved by the Board, the financial statements for the period, published in both Italian and English, are personally distributed to all members attending the annual meeting, or sent in electronic format by e-mail to all absent members.

INDEPENDENT CERTIFICATION /ATTESTATION OF THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

9 VOLUNTEERS There are 85 volunteers who work for the Association, one of which is the president. In Italy there are 25 volunteers distributed on the two offices of World Family of Radio Maria: in Roma 15 volunteers, in Casciago (operation and administration headquarters) 10. But most of volunteers (60) are foreigners who assist the implementation of each on-going project with our partners in their own countries. Out of the total number of volunteers 57 are men, and 28 are women. In Roma volunteers are committed to support editorial activities in cooperation with our partners, while in Casciago volunteers work in collaboration with administrative personnel. Please note that among the Associations that are members of World Family, the Chairmen and the members of the Directive Councils are all volunteers. The volunteers in Italy always attend the convivial holiday events held at the headquarters, especially during Christmas, while for the ones abroad there are some regional meetings organized according to the needs. An insurance policy is taken out for the volunteers to cover possible injuries.
16
10 OUTSOURCING CONTRACTS For the procurement of certain services, World Family of Radio Maria relies on companies and people specialized in the sector. In particular, this occurs for the satellite service, for the audio streaming service, with skilled technicians in the radio and audio frequency areas. The satellite service allows the radio signal to be broadcasted throughout the country’s territory without relying on an infrastructure of capillary broadcasting apparatus in the country, thus resulting in a considerable reduction in investment costs as well as in routine and extraordinary maintenance costs. During the course of 2014, a total of € 373.825,09 was spent for this type of services. As regards to audio streaming, which makes allows people to listen to the radio via web in any country of the world, the Association relies on the company Dream Site, and pays a monthly fee. In 2014 the cost of said supply was equal to € 25.305,03. The “Technical Task Force” consists of a group of highly skilled technicians in the radio and audio frequency sectors. World Family sends the Technical Task Force to developing countries to provide assistance to the local technicians in assembling, repairing equipment and apparatus; they also provide on-the-field training. Such expense increased as more interventions were done due to a number of projects focused on installations and upgrading of studios and network, the total cost was equal to € 256.772,50 compared to € 128.590,26 in 2013. Such increase is due to the fact that travel expenses are included in this amount while before they were in a different account. The administration of World Family decided to change in this way for better evidence of the cost of this service. Lastly, please note that there is no on-going litigation with the owners of the service providers.
17
11 FINANCING OF THIRD-PARTY PROJECTS Below are the description of the situation and the progress status of the most significant on-going projects. The smaller projects related to the supply of materials and spare parts purchased by the World Family of Radio Maria itself or by the local associations are not included: 2014 Albania

A GLANCE AT SOME PROJECTS AND RESULTS 2014 saw the starting up of two radios, one in Africa and one in Europe. Radio Maria Equatorial Guinea started its activities on 8th of December 2014, a project that took some time to take off due to some administrative and technical difficulties faced during the first part of the year. Again in Africa a lot was done in Malawi and Burundi to renew the network with the installation of new broadcasting stations. Madagascar and Guinea Conakry are countries where World Family has on going projects, and the radios will start broadcasting 2015. Activities in 2014 were technical surveys and project planning, renovation of buildings and shipment of part of the equipment. Involvement of local communities Every day programs that are produced in local communities and especially among the most vulnerable people are aired by national radios. Together with our partners we give voice to the voiceless making local communities protagonists of our programs, especially in developing countries. Activities in professional training area In 2014 World Family continued to invest in formation of human resources through its continental partners EFCA (Equipo de Formación Continental de America) in Latin America and FARM (Formateurs Africains Radio Maria) in Africa. These are formed by volunteers coming from some of the Associations that are members of WF; they have the mandate to plan and implement training courses according to the needs in their own continents. Therefore they organized even in 2014 a number of training sessions that benefited both trainees and the radios they work in. EFCA’s efforts were aimed at improving fund raising activities and in particular the worldwide Mariathon, while FARM organized field trainings to align new collaborators to Radio Maria policies, practices and roles with the objective of making the work in every single radio involved as professional as possible. A total of 71 people coming from 19 countries were formed in America during 7 workshops. In Africa 6 training sessions were organized with a total of 24 people trained in the areas of operation management and editorial management and programming. Even in 2014 WF had the collaborations of three African Radio which hosted the training: Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi. 22
In 2014 also in Europe training sessions were hosted in four different countries: Italy, Albania, Germany, Switzerland for a total of 66 people trained. Among this sessions there was a spiritual retreat: an opportunity to experience the sense of family among people coming from different countries but with the same mission.
