Automobile recycling on the threshold of a new era At the 14th International Automobile Recycling Congress (IARC 2014) in Brussels, the industry painted a new picture of the future of sustainable automobile production and recycling. New regulations at EU level as well as innovations in the field of carmaking are leading to major changes in the recycling of numerous materials. From 19 to 21 March 2014, the automobile recycling industry came together at the 14th International Automobile Recycling Congress (IARC 2014). Representatives of the major recycling companies, car manufacturers, authorities and researchers discussed how the industry can – and indeed must – rise to meet the challenges of upcoming new regulations and changing trends in carmaking. New energy sources and drive systems also demand innovative, sustainable recycling processes. The increasing electrification of drive assemblies in cars calls for technologies capable of recycling new types of manufacturing materials and electric drive components when dismantling the vehicles at the end of their life cycles. The process produces various metal compounds and electronic wastes, which can then be recovered and sold to a new market to generate added value. “Business with rare metals will reach new dimensions with the paradigm shift to renewable sources of energy,” says Roger Burri, Manager of Air Mercury AG, a company that specialises in reusing metals obtained from recycling processes. E-mobility will be the buzzword of

the future, Olivier François, Vice Chairman of the IARC Steering Committee, is also convinced. How can we replace our limited supplies of fossil fuels in the medium term, and how can we generally reduce the consumption of and the demand for energy in society? In his speech, Peter Kronschnabl, President and CEO of BMW in Belgium and Luxembourg, explained ways of utilising new materials in the field of automotive manufacture and the transformation that is leading to the use of new energy systems. He even brought along his favourite example for test drives – the BMW i3. Powered by an emission-free electric motor, the BMW i3 provides urban mobility wherever it is really important: such as in city centres that have long since introduced driving restrictions for certain types of vehicle. New high-voltage lithiumion batteries enable electric vehicles to cover greater distances without refuelling, but also raise new questions about the end-of-life disposal of their components. In this field, the industry still needs to develop suitable solutions, especially since the EU is introducing new regulations that set tougher standards for vehicle recycling. With the new End of Life Vehicles Directive (ELV), as of 1 January 2015 the EU requires that 85 per cent of a car’s components are either recycled or reused in the production process – and that 95 per cent of the production materials are recovered in the recycling process and disposed of professionally. However, the question of whether and, in particular, how these targets

and specifications can be implemented, was not conclusively answered at the IARC. A total of 220 participants and experts were in Brussels to attend this year’s congress – and 18 companies presented themselves and their services. In addition to various invited speakers, visits to companies in France, Belgium and the Netherlands were on the agenda, as were various networking functions and seminars specifically designed for exchanging knowhow. Jeanette Duttlinger, organiser of the IARC, is delighted at the high number of attendees and exhibiting companies. “The great popularity of the event shows us that the topic of automobile recycling will continue to grow in importance in the future,” says Jeanette Duttlinger. The next International Automobile Recycling Congress will be held in Berlin from 25 to 27 March 2015. For further information and graphic

Daimler names Hengst supplier of the year Hengst receives the Daimler Supplier Award 2013 Over half a century of trusting partnership

H

engst Group employees rejoice: on Thursday (February 27) managing partner Jens Röttgering and member of the management board, Original Equipment division Ingo Brunsmann accepted the “Daimler Supplier Award 2013” in Stuttgart. The award recognized a successful partnership which has already spanned over five decades, as well as the readiness to build up a global network together with Daimler. Today, Hengst develops and manufactures on four continents – in Europe as well as in South and North America and Asia. Great endeavors in the global implementation of the modular component concept and a high level of expertise in the areas of filtration and fluid management are other key factors which lead to the

prize being awarded to Hengst. Together with Daimler, Hengst has been a pioneer on many global projects to do with module systems. Complying with future stricter exhaust guidelines and reducing CO2 emissions are a couple of the most prominent issues in the automobile industry. At the same time, fluid management requirements are also increasing. As well as functional advantages, manufacturers expect innovative, efficient and environmentallyfriendly products. Hengst produces fluid management modules for nearly all of the Daimler corporate group’s truck and bus applications, for example for Daimler Trucks’ international HDEP engine series (Heavy Duty Engine Platform). In the automobile division they deliver, for example, filter systems for all AMG models. The high level of expertise in development and manufacturing is valued by almost all

big automobile manufacturers: just last year the supplier received the “GM Supplier Award”. The first Hengst oil filters were installed in Mercedes Benz vehicles back in 1961 – the beginning of a long-standing close collaboration that still continues today. “This award is an acknowledgement for the whole team, especially as a decadeslong mutual history connects us with Daimler,” says Jens Röttgering. It was his grandfather, company founder Walter Hengst, who established the collaboration at the start of the 1960s. Through innovative products and a global outlook, Hengst has been successful in building up a close system partnership. “Over the years we have successfully acquired the reputation of a qualified development partner,” asserts Jens Röttgering, who is delighted about the award: “We are proud to be a

strategic partner of Daimler and look forward to continuing our longstanding business relationship with this important customer in the future.” Hengst Automotive is an international established development partner and OEM supplier in the array of filtration and fluid management to the automotive and engine industry as well as in the fields of industrial filtration applications and in the consumer merchandize sector. The inner and outer car bodies will be painted by 35 robots in a primer and top coat painting line. Doors and boots will be opened, held and closed by a total of 11 handling robots. The car body is thoroughly cleaned with emu feathers before the painting job in the top coat painting line by the EcoClean F5 cleaning booth.

A total of 12 painting robots are being used there, among these is this significant robot. Two flame treatment robots activate the plastic surface. This enables better adhesion to the surface. Two robots then apply the primer coat. Four EcoRP L033 fitted with EcoBell2 spray guns are responsible for the primer and clear coat.

The paint application of the base and clear coat is taken over the tried-and-tested EcoBell2. The colour change only takes 12 seconds if you use the EcoMCC or EcoLCC colour changers during base lacquer in combination with the new EcoPump9 dose pump. Colour discoloration is noticeably lessened.

The solvent-based paint is applied to the outer surface of the parts during the Bell-Bell process. This procedure foregoes on air atomizers completely; instead the paint is exclusively applied with the EcoBell2 electrostatic high-speed spray guns. This results in an improved transfer efficiency factor of up to 75%, thus reducing carbon emissions and saving on paint.

All paint and sealing robots are fitted with the robot controller EcoRPC as a standard. Sercos II is the universal language used to steer all drives und process elements. This simplifies maintenance and increases the application performance.

Volatility - a new lesson in optimisation and internal efficiencies 3rd MSME Summit redefines volatility for a better future

V

olatility today has impacted organisations of all sizes, across all major industries but most significantly the MSMEs. The industry is under constant pressure from what is termed as VUCA forces, i.e. Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity, which continue to characterise the business environment. VUCA has affected the market such that there is a slowdown coupled with other adversities in macro-economic factors that have created negative sentiments in the industry. However, every cloud has a silver lining and this holds true for the Auto industry as well. In light of above, ACMA with the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises jointly organised 3rd MSME summit in New Delhi on 21st March 2013. Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) inaugurated the summit, with N. K. Maini, Dy. managerial bandwidth and low return on investments add to the challenge of unutilised capacity, especially for small Tier 2 and Tier 3 manufacturers. The industry has a lot more ground to cover and become cost competitive, while the Government needs to ensure a dependable and competitive ecosystem and infrastructure, the industry needs to focus on internal efficiencies and opportunities other than the conventional to keep their heads above water.” At the event Sudam Maitra, referred to VUCA as the ‘New Normal’. To mitigate volatility, MSMEs must strategically design a long-term road map, have effective financial planning, prudently manage manpower, work smarter & leaner, and focus on limited dedicated yet diversified customers without any compromise on quality. It is imperative that for the auto component industry to be globally competitive, the Tier-1s must hand hold Tier -2/3s to build their

capabilities including technology and skilling of personnel. Further, it is critical that the industry explores tools and best practices such as diversification to newer segments, globalisation, technology absorption, hedging forex, effective cashflow management, and continually innovate, along with working on concepts such as Practical Improvement in Sales and Marketing (PRISM), improvising quality through innovation, better inventory management, re-examining suppliers credit processes and exploring external markets for increasing business returns to mitigate volatility. On the occasion Ramesh Suri, Vice President, ACMA said, “The purpose of this summit was to understand the dynamics of the Indian automotive market with focus on MSMEs, the factors affecting their de-growth and what could be the possible strategies to manage the volatility in the industry. The industry and the government will need to collaborate in helping companies manage the

The summit was organised to assess the current business scenario and how component manufacturers, especially the small and medium enterprises can harness this challenging environment to their benefit. N.K Maini, redefined VUCA as Vision, Understanding, Communication and Agility; and urged the industry to strategize such that the adversity turns into an advantage. During his inaugural address Shankar, referring to volatility as intrinsic to human civilisation said, “While we have seen growth come to a standstill due to uncertainty and lack of confidence, the challenges for the future are equally daunting. MANN+HUMMEL on stable course euros on Research & Development in 2013, an area in which it employs nearly 1,000 highly qualified employees. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) has recognised the filtration specialist's innovative strength for the third year in succession. In 2013, the company has again garnered a position on the list of Germany's 50 most active patent applicants.

• Strong euro dampens sales growth • Sales increase to 2.7 billion euros • Earnings (EBIT) increase to 151 million euros • EBIT margin of 5.6 percent remains stable at previous year's level • 15,231 employees at 60 locations The MANN+HUMMEL Group, based in Ludwigsburg, Germany, has developed positively against the backdrop of fluctuating economic conditions in 2013. At its financial press conference, the filtration specialist reported on its business development in 2013: sales of 2.68 billion euros (+ 2.3 percent) and a Group result (EBIT) of 151 billion euros (+ 3.6 percent) were recorded in the year under review. MANN+HUMMEL puts the flat sales growth curve down to the strength of the euro. The single currency gained significant value against the Brazilian Real as well as against the US dollar last year. Gains in market share and positive market trends in the local currencies were therefore frequently neutralised in the consolidated balance sheet in euros. Adjusted for exchange rate effects, sales growth amounted to five percent, exceeding the previous year's reference value (3.6 percent).

Sales increase in the automotive sector For 2013, MANN+HUMMEL reports a sales increase of some 60 million euros to 2.68 billion euros. Determining factors in this regard are principally sales increases in North America and Asia, both in the automotive original equipment segment and in the aftermarket business. The Industrial Filtration business unit remained at the previous year's level as a result of stagnating demand for capital goods. Satisfactory results Alfred Weber, President & CEO, was satisfied with the results: "We achieved good figures in terms of sales and earnings in 2013. The market environment remains volatile and we go into 2014 with cautious optimism."

In response to the above-average growth in Asia, a new plant was opened in Changchun (China). Moreover, production capacity was significantly expanded at the US locations of Portage (Michigan) and Dunlap (Tennessee). In Europe, MANN+HUMMEL also invested in numerous existing plants as well as opening a new Logistics and Testing Centre in Okrisky (Czech Republic). More than 15,200 employees worldwide In 2013, staffing levels amounted to 15,231 employees at 60 locations. The growth in personnel was mainly attributable to Asia and North America. "Our employees have worked with commitment and passion for our company in 2013. I would like to thank them in the name of the Board of Directors and the Partners," said Weber. Particularly in the growth markets, the company needs engineers and qualified specialists in order to meet the sustained high demand and to

further advance innovations and future technologies. At the start of the training year 2013, 74 young people began their professional life as apprentices and Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) students within the MANN+HUMMEL Group. In total, the number of apprentices in Germany at the end of 2013 amounted to 228. The Group offers apprenticeships similar to a DHBW course of study at all of its German locations. Outlook for 2014 Although CFO Jehle anticipates further economic recovery in 2014, he still remains cautious: "The financial markets have not yet achieved a sustainably sound situation. In 2014, we will continue to focus on the high flexibility of MANN+HUMMEL in particular. In the process, we will continue to invest in growth and the expansion of our market position." Following last year's announcement of the construction of a new Technology Centre in Ludwigsburg to the tune of more than 30 million euros, the project has reportedly progressed. The new car park in the western part of Ludwigsburg, a prerequisite for the commencement of construction work, is set to open in June. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new building is then to be held in late summer at the site of the current parking lot..

Five-star award for Pierburg plant in Spain

The Pierburg subsidiary, Pierburg S.A., Abadiano, Spain, has been awarded five stars by the European Federation of Quality Management as part of the latter's EFQM Excellence Model Awards. It was as early as 2003 that the Spanish plant voluntarily applied for EFQM certification and last year a detailed report was submitted on improvement processes carried out over the past years. The prize was awarded after a committee of nine experts evaluated the company on this basis. The EFQM award goes to companies having achieved outstanding optimization of their processes through self-analyses and critical internal reviews. Among the awardees to date are Robert Bosch GmbH with its Feuerbach plant near Stuttgart and the BMW plant in Berlin. Each year the EFQM award goes to ten different European companies from a variety of business sectors. "We're very proud of the prize and the number of stars, given to only a few companies until now," says
