P
rinting specialist Lijnco, based in Groningen, the Netherlands one of Q.I. Press Controls oldest customers - is to invest in mRC-3D. In so doing, Lijnco is placing its seventh order and proves once again its value as a loyal and satisfied customer. As a communications provider, Lijnco uses a diversity of communication channels. For physical forms of communication, Lijnco produces high-quality printed matter for an extensive array of clients. Additionally, the company also produces stickers, labels, security documents, logistics documents, tickets and all sorts of other printed matter geared to the needs of its customers. According to Anne Werkman, project manager at Lijnco, in order to maintain levels of profitability in printed matter in the future, it’s essential to invest in process control: “Effective register control helps reduce set-up times and use of set-up material. What’s more, the quality of the register is much better. These are aspects, which - from a
financial and environmental point of view - are major improvements. Our previous experience with Q.I. Press Controls and the price-quality ratio of their solutions means that we have once again opted to acquire a Q.I. Press Controls system.” The mRC-3D will replace the existing IRS which has had a proven track record over the last 16 years. The upgrade consists of an automatic colour register, including front to back and perforation register. The cameras are positioned on a Müller Martini narrow-web offset-rotation press consisting of nine printing units. With the upgrade to the mRC-3D, Lijnco expects that the quality of its products will continue to meet standards of high quality. In fact, with the addition of the automatic perforation register, it will more than exceed them. “It’s a win-win situation,” explains Werkman. “We expect improved performance in terms of efficiency and reduced consumption of materials. Another

side-effect of having a reliable system in place will be the increased confidence in the printing presses on the part of operators.” With this order, Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls, aims to show that Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions are suitable for any kind of printing press. “In the past we may have had a name in the coldset and heatset business, but with clients such as Lijnco we are able to show that our systems can also be used on narrow-web presses. The fact that Lijnco has once again plumped for our solution is a reflection of this evident satisfaction.” With the mRC-3D, Lijnco will remain one of the leading players on the market. “When it comes to giving support to modern printing companies such as Lijnco,” Werkman adds, “the people at Q.I. Press Controls know what it’s all about. Offset will remain part of our work where we can be of assistance to clients. The effective solutions and service that Q.I. Goss works with Innotech to give The New York Times new supersize capabilities
G
oss International has completed a press enhancement project with Innotech involving the installation of full-color panorama gatefold capabilities for The New York Times. The new formats allow the publisher to offer advertisers innovative placement opportunities to create maximum impact. Completed to a tight schedule of around 20 weeks from initial order to the first test run, the project involved retrofitting each of two existing Goss Colorliner press lines with a custom-configured Innotech Panorama Gatefold System. According to Dan Picco, regional sales manager at Goss, the project called on the full and combined
expertise of all parties involved: "Obviously, for a publisher operating on the scale of The New York Times, there is no time to lose and there can be no disruption to ongoing daily production. We had to establish failsafe processes from the outset and make sure we achieved the highest level of teamwork. The fact that The New York Times is already enjoying the benefit of the new capabilities testifies to our joint success." The gatefold system now running at The New York Times enables the Goss Colorliner presses to produce an additional four-page wide centerfold or a separate eight-page pull-out section, up to a maximum format of 48 x 22 inches (1219 x
559 mm). In addition, it is possible to make smaller gatefolds or coupon folds at one or both edges for special promotions providing new display areas for advertisers. It is also possible to make gatefolds in the cover page or have the gate folded section as a wrap around the main section. The new capabilities have already been used to maximum effect by select advertisers in The Times.
About Innotech
Vinod Kapoor, president at Innotech concludes, "Goss and Innotech engineered a solution that gave The New York Times ultimate flexibility with regard to the positioning of specialized sections within the newspaper, without the need to purchase a new press."
Panorama System uses "INNOFORMER", the geometric air bar plow, for high speed folding with no set-up time. Innotech has installed many such systems in China, India, Germany and Colombia. Most of these systems were retro-fitted on existing presses.
(www.innotechequip.com) Innotech, a New York based manufacturer of press auxiliary equipment, has been building customized equipment for commercial and newspaper printers for the past 25 years with installations in America, Europe and the Far East..

Commercial printer and print management provider Gask & Hawley (Manchester, UK), is adding QuadTech press controls for register, ribbon and color control to its new Goss M-600. Offering automated, in-line print quality assurance for optimal performance of the M-600's production capabilities, the QuadTech systems will minimize errors and defective copy while maintaining color consistency-dramatically reducing waste.
G&H was the first business in the UK to purchase a 16-page, 4-color, Goss M-600 web offset press with in-line Kodak Prosper 4-color inkjet heads for personalization-perfect for its core business of regular high volume print runs where each copy is unique. Running alongside its sheetfed presses, this installation increases capacity and productivity throughout the company.
Dave Hatton, Managing Director of G&H comments, "We are always looking to improve the efficiency of our existing workflow and invest in new equipment and systems that integrate processes and maximize the accuracy of our output. Now, having considered all of the options,
The QuadTech installation includes a comprehensive and integrated arrangement, which includes the QuadTech® Register Guidance System with MultiCam®, QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam® and QuadTech Color Control System, managed through the QuadTech® ICONTM platform. pressroom to meet tighter margins and just-in-time deliveries by reducing makeready and waste. Recovery from web-tension upsets is controlled by QuadTech's Ribbon Control System and Register Guidance System with MultiCam®. The Register Guidance System is a closed-loop color-to-color, circumferential and lateral control system that will minimize errors and reduce waste by identifying marks as small as 0.36 mm (0.014 in) and perfecting print register at full press speeds. This is complemented by the Ribbon Control System for unmatched print-to-cut and print-tofold register quality that enables print-to-slitter stability and minimizes cutoff. In turn, the QuadTech Color Control System automatically adjusts color throughout the run, providing realtime information of color accuracy. Job setup is also simplified with the ability to save pre-set parameters for
repeat jobs through the ICON platform. Stewart Dyer, QuadTech UK Sales Manager says, "We are delighted to work with G&H. The company's drive for press uptime and streamlined efficiency is exactly what our products can offer, as well as a reduction in waste and guaranteed high quality output. Our equipment for web applications complements Goss presses well, with a robust design ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime for G&H." Operating since 1969, G&H offers a broad spectrum of services to its clients from the Manchester facility, including HP Indigo digital, Heidelberg sheetfed and Goss web offset printing, which are supported by the company's in-house departments offering Marketing; Digital Asset Management; Web-To-Print services; Print Management; Distribution and IT Software solutions.

First Goss “open demo week proves a strong draw to New Hampshire
F
lexible and board applications demonstrated to packaging professionals
Quick job changes and inline capabilities highlight Vpak speed and versatility Following weeks of closed testing sessions and private demonstrations since it was launched in April this year, the Goss Packaging Technology Center recently held its first "open" demonstration week in Durham, New Hampshire. More than 40 prospects representing a range of packaging facilities across the US and Canada, from small independents to multi-plant operations, made the trip to see live demonstrations of the Sunday Vpak web offset press and explore new opportunities in packaging print production. During a series of morning and afternoon programs spread over the course of four days in October, visitors observed the Vpak 500 model running both 76-micron OPP film and 8-point SBS paper board and employing a variety of additional inline capabilities, including highgloss flexo coatings and EB curing. The Goss team on-site also demonstrated the unique advantages of the Sunday Vpak quickchange sleeve technology which allows for very fast, reliable and economical job changes. Peter Walczak, director of product management for packaging, noted, "The event was hugely positive and beneficial, both for Goss and all our technology partners, as well for our
guests. The feedback at the time was fantastic, but comments and enquiries since suggest there could be some interesting developments to come." According to Walczak, the event was even attended by some early contributors to the Vpak development: "We had a couple of visitors who were involved in discussions when the technology was at an early engineering stage. They were really pleased to see the machine performing so well and to know that their input had contributed to an industry gamechanger." "Open houses and demonstrations are key to helping us as a business showcase how our products are addressing market requirements," concludes Walczak. "The Packaging Technology Center provides converters and brand owners the chance to generate and test new concepts for improved packaging printing first-hand." In addition to the ongoing schedule of trials and demonstrations, Goss is now planning a series of events at the Packaging Technology Center focused on specific educational topics. Color management and ink curing will be among the first themes to be tackled in these sessions, with input from Goss partners and consumables suppliers. Colonial Press International chooses Goss Sunday 3000 press for competitive advantage at GraphExpo 2014
7
5-inch web width produc tion capabilities key to decision 2x8 press offers unmatched production flexibility At GraphExpo yesterday Colonial Press International of Miami, FL, USA sealed the deal for a new 2x8 Goss Sunday 3000 press that will triple the company's existing press output and boost competitive capacity across a broader range of products. The 75-inch (1905mm) wide 2x8 format of the new five-unit Sunday 3000 press is unique in the market and was the key feature behind Colonial's decision. Twice as wide as any of the company's existing presses, the press has a cut-off of 22Ÿ inches (565 mm) and will be installed with both a pinless PFF3.2 folder and a JF80G jaw folder. This will enable Colonial to produce standard 8 ½ x 11, as well as double-parallel and tabloid products. The speed, format and configuration of the new Sunday 3000 press means that it will triple Colonial's existing press capacity and allow them to offer customers new production efficiencies, in terms of cycle times and print turnaround. According to Jorge Gomez, CEO of Colonial Press, the decision to buy the new press is part of the company's core strategy to continually improve product cycle times and deliver greater flexibility: "We work predominantly for large corporations that have to coordinate
diverse print requirements across many territories, so anything we can do to give them more time and greater flexibility provides us with a competitive advantage," explains Gomez. "This new press will not only give us three times more print output but, due to the format flexibility of the configuration, it will extend that advantage across a broader range of the products we produce for them." Colonial Press is a company that in many respects characterizes the spirit of enterprise and opportunity associated with the American Dream. Founded in 1952, the current chairman Jose Gomez started work as a paper cutter at Colonial in 1970; 18 years later he owned the company, and today his son Jorge draws on his own extensive experience as a corporate accountant in heading the business. Located close to Miami airport, the company employs around 200 people and has a fleet of web and sheetfed presses, producing highend print such as catalogs and magazines for corporate clients. "Running the finest quality at speeds up to 3,000 feet per minute, the Sunday 3000 2x8 model is by far the most flexible web press on the market today and suits the American market perfectly," comments Graham Trevett, senior VP of sales in Goss Americas. "It's the ideal press to help Colonial continue pushing forward on their mission to deliver the highest competitive advantage to their customers."

Fujifilm to showcase the ‘power of inkjet’ for label and packaging applications at Packaging Innovations 2015
F
ujifilm will be showcasing the ‘power of inkjet’ for label & packaging applications at Packaging Innovations 2015 (NEC Birmingham, 25th – 26th February). The company will be showcasing how its leading roll-fed printer, the Acuity LED 1600, can produce packaging samples, how its inkjet solutions are starting to transform corrugated applications, and how, in partnership with FFEI, the Graphium hybrid digital label press can meet the needs of label converters looking to improve their business.
(including PET, acrylic, polycarbonate substrates and lightweight boards including mirror and fluted).
Acuity LED 1600
An integrated platform for the corrugated market
Fujifilm’s Acuity LED 1600 is a large format hybrid inkjet printer which produces outstanding packaging prototypes, including applications distinguished by varnishing effects and spot colours. The printer achieves a productivity of up to 20m2 per hour and excellent image quality, supporting substrates up to 1,610mm in width and rigid sheet materials up to 13mm thick
Another key feature of the Acuity LED 1600 is the inclusion of six ink colours, with the addition of white and clear ink as standard. The machine can apply these in a single pass to produce premium matt and high gloss finishes with a much higher efficiency than a conventional printer, where colours in conjunction with white and clear inks are applied in separate passes.
Fujifilm will be showcasing its integrated corrugated solution, which is a combination of the Inca Onset flatbed platform, Fujifilm’s Uvijet inks dedicated to corrugated board applications, and an automated handling system.
crease features, and a range of finishes from low glare satin to high impact gloss that can be used for all types of corrugated applications. The inks can be implemented on any of the high-end Inca Onset flatbed UV printers sold globally by Fujifilm. To complete its corrugated platform, Fujifilm has introduced advanced ¾ or fully automated handling systems that enable improved efficiency and productivity within a corrugated production environment. Reduced time to market and print on demand capability are only a few of the benefits of using inkjet technology in the corrugated segment. At Packaging Innovations 2015, Fujifilm will highlight the advantages offered by its integrated solution and illustrate some packaging and display applications produced using this platform. Graphium

he 5th International Packaging and Printing Exhibition for Asia (PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015), jointly organized by Messe Düsseldorf Asia, The Thai Packaging Association and The Thai Printing Association is gearing up to once again offer the regional marketplace an excellent sourcing and buying platform. Companies who have committed to share their industry knowledge and expertise at the upcoming show edition include HEWLETT-PACKARD ASIA PACIFIC, FUJI XEROX, FERROSTAAL, RISO, ROTOMETRICS, VT GRAPHIC, HEIDELBERG GRAPHICS, KOENIG & BAUER GROUP and DUBUIT FAR EAST. As Southeast Asia’s No. 1 trade show for the printing and packaging sectors, PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 will bring to the show floor at BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand a multifaceted exhibition showcase from 26 to 29 August 2015. Driven by the world’s leading trade shows – drupa and interpack, exhibitors and visitors can look forward to a vibrant mix of onsite activities, including display of latest machineries, seminars, live product demonstrations and a host of networking
opportunities from across the world to match the current trends and demands of the dynamic Southeast Asian markets. ECONOMIC VS INDUSTRY OUTLOOK Packaging and printing industries are set for greater heights with robust growth opportunities expected in the Southeast Asia region – particularly so with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 – which will transform Southeast Asia into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, and freer flow of capital. Emphasising this, Mr Gernot Ringling, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf Asia, shared that “with the launch of AEC this year, businesses within the region can look towards further growth prospects. PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 – a trade fair for the industry by the industry thus provides a timely, converging platform for industry players to meet and take advantage of the rising business opportunities and needs. Its value-for-demand staging and strong drawing power of the who’s
who of the industry from all over the world to engage, network, and drive sales growth, is the winning formula behind every successful edition of PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL.” Worldwide market outlook for both the packaging and printing industries is set to shine too. According to the Future of Global Printing to 2018 report, global printing industry is expected to reach $980 billion by 2018, with growth driven mainly by packaging and labels. Another trend observed is the shift in print technology used – in 2008, digital printing accounted for just 18.5% of the offset market in value terms, but by 2018, it is forecasted that digital printing will make up almost 50% of the global offset sector. The global packaging market on the other hand is projected to welcome bullish sales receipts of $975 billion by 2018, with sales of packaging largely concentrated in Asia. By 2018, segmentation of the market is expected to change and Asia is predicted to represent over 40% of global demand for packaging. In line with these projections, Mr Chaivudhi Pungthong, President of The Thai Packaging Association, shared that “exports of packaging materials – primarily film, plastic and printed materials – could hit 100 billion baht with the implementation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) this year.” He went on to comment that, “despite political challenges, the packaging industry will continue to grow because the industry is tied to the production of consumer goods which have increased substantially
28 | january-february 2015 | printingreview
due to higher disposable income and affluence amongst the Thai population.” Echoing Mr Chaivudhi’s thoughts is Ms Pimnara Jiranithitnon, President of The Thai Printing Association, who pointed out that “Thailand has an industry representation of over 5,500 local printing and publishing houses, which attests to its strong market demand and potential. With the experience and skillsets earned, global players can strike up partnerships with local companies to more efficiently fulfill industry demands in offset, 3D and digital printing, in turn gaining a larger foothold in Asia’s thriving printing market.” HUB FOR PACKING AND PRINTING INDUSTR Y PL AYERS ACROSS ASIA Following the show’s successful staging in 2013 that attracted 202 exhibitors and 16,833 visitors over four show days, PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 is set to congregate the largest number of exhibitors ever spanning the nearly 15,000 square metres (sqm) of
show space. Together, visitors from the printing and packaging arenas can look forward to a broad yet relevant display of cutting-edge machinery, equipment, technology and solutions serving the entire packaging and printing supply chain: • Prepress and premedia • Printing machinery, appliances and accessories • Book binding and print finishing • Paper converting including packaging production • Packaging machines, equipment, accessories and appliances • Packaging materials, means and aids • Services for the packaging and printing industries Adding more depth to PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015, a series of forums, seminars and workshops on recent developments and highlights from the areas of packaging and printing have been lined up to complement this world-class exhibition. CONCURRENT EVENT Co-locating with PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 is T-PLAS 2015 – International Trade Fair for the Plastics and Rubber Industries. Nussbaum is first to install Sun Chemical’s new metal decoration dispensing solution, Polare
N
ussbaum, one of the leaders in the European monobloc packaging industry, has become the first company to install Polare, Sun Chemical’s new dispensing solution. Launched earlier this year at Metpack 2014, it is a compact system designed to meet the requirement for this particularly demanding market. Originally founded as an aluminium can manufacturer in 1963, over the past 50 years Nussbaum has evolved into an independent Swiss group of companies specialising in high quality metal packaging for the global market. With over 400 employees and four manufacturing sites located across Switzerland and Germany, the company focuses on the development, production and distribution of cans and tubes in a large variety of different shapes and sizes, featuring the finest lithography. Further establishing Nussbaum’s position as a pioneering business is its dedication to advances in aluminium packaging, as well as its commitment to sustainability. Striving for innovation, Nussbaum is constantly improving processes and introducing new technologies to its production environment. One area in which the can and tube manufacturer has recently invested particular attention is the optimisation for the preparation of spot inks for production. “Aside from shape and size, the inks are the most visible component of a
can. This means that, in order to obtain that visually striking balance to capture the customer’s attention, the ink layer, colour shade and sharpness of print need to be perfect,” explains Florian Nussbaum, CEO. Gordon Huettig, CTO at Nussbaum, continues: “With that in mind, we aim to perfect Nussbaum’s offering by investing in a range of equipment that will further enhance all ink related items, as well as reduce our internal costs and shorten press down-times.” “Sun Chemical has been our ink supplier over the course of two decades,” explains Gordon. “Our companies have a long-standing and fruitful relationship and we have developed many innovative products together. As a result, we were happy to enlist their services again and invest in their new dispensing solution.” For Nussbaum, Polare represents the next step in making processes safer and more efficient than ever. Based on proven technology, the dispensing system is designed to meet exacting print requirements while streamlining the production of spot inks. With no stock wasted and thanks to Polare’s excellent ability to repeat processes, ink can be remixed identically in a matter of minutes. In 2011 Nussbaum installed Sun Chemical’s Turnkey Solution, a web based colour management system as well as its colour QC software; the installation of Polare is the next

step to optimise its production of metal decoration Gordon has already noticed the advantages of incorporating the compact system into Nussbaum’s production environment. “A machine this precise operating 24/7 is instrumental in the prevention of errors, but what I find most helpful is its ability to track batch numbers, which allows our production runs to be traced back to components from each job.” Finally, with its employment of Sun Chemical technologies and its commitment to producing high quality metal packaging solutions, Nussbaum is one step closer to completing its Colour Competence CenterTM (CCC). A third generation ink kitchen tailor-made by Sun Chemical, the CCC functions as an infrastructure that allows efficient operations, helps reduce internal costs and shortens press downtimes. “The CCC is part of a bigger
project that Nussbaum has been working on for some time,” says Florian Nussbaum. “It’s not just about demonstrating competence, but also being capable to communicate achieved colour accuracy to both customers old and new. With Sun Chemical by our side, we feel like we’re one step closer to achieving this goal.” Lukas Mettler, Marketing Director, Sun Chemical Switzerland concludes: “As the metal packaging market is becoming increasingly demanding, it is important for companies to invest in the right solutions to stay competitive and innovative. With our new dispensing system now in place in a working environment developing into a fully-fledged CCC, we are confident Nussbaum will be right where they want to be.” For more information about Polare and Sun Chemical’s product portfolio, visit: www.sunchemical.com

hile the parent Koenig & Bauer looked back in November 2014 at the 200th birthday of the first cylinder press (the so-called Times press) developed by its founders Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer, subsidiary KBA-France based in the suburbs of Paris celebrated its 20th anniversary last September. Managing director Michel Faust, who has successfully stood at the helm of this French subsidiary for over 10 years, looks back at the last 20 years and ventured to provide KBA Report with an outlook for 2015.
MR FAUST ANCE 20 YEARS FAUST,, HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN A ATT KBA-FR KBA-FRANCE AGO? Michel Faust: KBA-France was founded in September 1994 with eight employees in Tremblay-en-France, where its headquarters are situated today. We were proud to be the first subsidiary of a German press manufacturer in France. However, the beginning was anything but easy for us. The takeover of Planeta by Koenig & Bauer in 1991 scared away numerous longstanding Planeta users. Many turned their backs on what then became KBA-Planeta. When KBA-France was founded in 1994 only six Rapidas from Koenig & Bauer had been installed in France ? two Rapida 104 and four Rapida 72K. What is KBA-France’s market position like today? Michel Faust: At the end of 2014 our active press fleet consisted of approx.
200 Rapidas, 50 per cent of which are implemented in commercial printing companies and 50 per cent in packaging printing. Half of all the presses we have sold since 1994 were to new customers. We are particularly proud that over 90 per cent of our existing customers remain loyal to KBA. In today’s world this is not simply a matter of course. As the number of installed presses grew so did our internal organisation: we opened a second office in Lyon in 2004 and the number of employees has risen from eight in September 1994 to 35 today. After success in medium and large format over the last two decades, we will now focus more on the half-format segment. We are confident that we can secure a reasonable market share with the completely revised Rapida 75 even in the 50 x 70cm format sector. In 2014 two new Rapida 75 were fired up at printing houses in France: a
Michel FFaust: aust: We are seeing increasing demand for individual solutions with long and complex configurations in the high-end segment of the packaging market. Tailored solutions are specialty of KBA. Packaging operations with high print runs predominantly bank on high-speed Rapidas with non-stop systems and logistics. Some customers print at speeds of 20,000sph around the clock, such as the highly automated Rapidas 106-6+L at FP Pack (2013) and C.E.C. Carmaux (2014). There is a clear trends towards HR-UV and LED-UV technology in the commercial market. This is particularly true of longer presses with and without perfecting. WHA WHATT DO YOU EXPECT FROM 2015? Michel FFaust: aust: We are feeling optimistic despite the difficult economic situation in France at the moment. Thanks to KBA’s innovative role as technology leader in packaging it is our goal to hold onto and increase our market share in the crisis-ridden commercial printing sector. We have been a member of Impriclub, one of the most important French associations of commercial printers, since 2014 and have already won the trust of a host of prominent members, such as Pure Impression, Inore Groupe Impression, Zimmermann, Escourbiac, Korus Edition and Iapca.

Seven KBA Rapidas and automated pile logistics at Tianjin Huiyuan Fully automated packaging production in northern China
E
xtensively automated print production including substrate logistics is currently somewhat of a novelty in Chinese printshops. Therefore when packaging producer Tianjin Huiyuan opened its press room doors as part of an open house it attracted huge crowds. Some 100 packaging pros came to the event in northern China in November. This longstanding KBA sheetfed offset customer located in a town bearing the same name has several Rapidas, including two new highly automated
Rapida 106s which are all integrated in automated pile logistics. Tianjin Huiyuan installed its first sheetfed offset press from KBA in 2002. Today a grand total of seven Rapidas are in operation at the company including a half-format Rapida 75, a large-format Rapida 142 and a fleet of high-performance Rapida 106s. Founded in 1997 by Lv Junqiang the firm produces packaging for the food and pharmaceutical industries, electronics companies and other branches KBA sales director Dietmar Heyduck thanked Lv Junqiang, general

manager of Tianjin Huiyuan, and presented him with an historical KBA share certificate at the event (2)Tianjin Huiyuan has made fast job changes, streamlined integrated processes and a high level of quality its motto. Automated pile logistics reduce manual efforts to a minimum and contribute considerably to increasing productivity and economy. The two newest Rapida 106 presses run at speeds of up to 18,000sph, are raised and feature a host of automated features ensuring short makeready times. These include DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free
infeed, automated plate changing, DriveTronic SRW simultaneous inking unit washing and combined CleanTronic cleaning systems for impression cylinders, blankets and rollers. Colour density measurement is done at the ErgoTronic console with wallscreen via ErgoTronic ColorDrive. Furthermore the presses are kitted out with ErgoTronic ACR for register control, a separate DensiTronic Professional measuring desk, LogoTronic Professional for production management with JDF interface for exchanging data with the company’s MIS.
Less investment in offset Digital newspaper printing still on hold KBA AT WORLD PUBLISHING EXPO 2014 NEWSPAPER TRADE SHOW IN AMSTERDAM
C
ompared to previous years Koenig & Bauer’s(KBA) management board was not able to report an influx of orders in the international newspaper industry during its press conference at this year’s World Publishing Expo in Amsterdam. Since 2011 the international slump in investment in web offset presses for newspapers and publications has intensified following a minor interim high in 2010, and in 2014 the global volume of new web press orders will reach a new low of below •300m. Possible relevant business models with high-volume digital presses, such as the KBA RotaJET, have been a subject of lively debate in the industry and also tested occasionally, but newspaper publishers have remained extremely hesitant to make the necessary investments. Pioneers are needed, like so often in the long history of the newspaper industry. Christoph Müller, KBA executive vice-president for the web press division, hit the nail on the head: “Traditional newspaper houses currently connect digital first with online or mobile activities.”
packaging printing segment We are doing our best and have streamlined ourselves as a product house.” FIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFT KBA CEO and president Claus Bolza-Schünemann reported on the ongoing restructuring of the KBA Group under the motto “Fit@All” which has been in place since the beginning of the year. In recent months agreements for the reduction of over 1,000 from a total of up to 1,500 jobs were made with employee representatives at German and Austrian production sites. More than half will be cut at the web press facilities in Würzburg, Trennfeld und Frankenthal. A new site concept for production should prevent parallel activities and is currently leading to major relocation activities between the individual production sites. In addition he named the establish-
ment of autonomous business units (also called product houses at KBA) which have clear responsibility for sales and earnings for the web press, sheetfed press, special press (this includes bank note and digital printing) segments and production as a very important measure. BolzaSchünemann: “We have to sustainably strengthen our profitability and competitiveness in all areas. In order to do this we need more transparency and more strategic flexibility. A holding company with a few central functions, a small management board and operative units assigned to it with own managing directors will support our goals.” However, the KBA CEO made it clear that downsizing and reorganising alone are not enough to overcome the rapid structural change in large parts of the printing
industry. Bolza-Schünemann: “Shrinking markets, such as newspaper, commercial and publications printing, oppose growth markets, e.g. packaging, digital printing and coding, as well as special markets, such as banknote printing, metal decorating or direct glass decoration. We aim to secure our current strong position in these fields and expand on it further where possible.” Capacity adjustments and new acquisitions cannot be ruled out as long as our liquidity is adequate, and this is the case at KBA.” He cited the takeovers completed in 2013 of KBA-Flexotecnica in Italy active in the growth segment flexible packaging as well as KBA-Kammann in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, a leader in the premium niche market glass direct decoration, as examples of this.
Like other established vendors in the newspaper industry for some years KBA has been forced to adapt its capacities and personnel for this market segment at great expense to the sharp slump in demand. This in addition to restructuring the company. Christoph Müller: “The previously large web offset market segment has mutated into a niche market in terms of volume. This makes it difficult for suppliers to maintain customary R&D standards and offer free consultation which is why we have initiated additional activities, such as the partnership with HP in the digital corrugated printingreview | january-february 2015 | 35
New web press start-ups like the KBA Cortina shown here at Trierischer Volksfreund in June 2014 have become rare due to investment restraint in the newspaper sector. KBA’s compact philosophy prevails The user-orientated compact philosophy in press manufacturing introduced by KBA in 2000 with the Cortina and in 2007 with the Commander CT has established itself on the market and has been adopted by other manufacturers in the meantime. Today 19 Cortinas and 26 Commander CT press lines are in operation worldwide, ten of which with heatset dryers for semicommercials. The most recent Commander CTs were fired up in Baden-Baden, Germany, and Aarau, Switzerland, in 2014. Waterless Cortina presses went live in Trier, Germany, and Trondheim in Norway. Demand in industrial countries for such high-end presses has fallen in past years due to decreasing circulations. Modular designed and retrofittable presses, such as the Commander CL launched in 2011, have become more popular. In 2014 presses of this type have come on stream at Pressedruck Potsdam, Main-Echo in Aschaffenburg, Heilbronner Stimme (all in Germany) and at Ouest-France in Rennes.

The new RotaJET L press platform unveiled by KBA at the WPE is available in five different web widths from 895 to 1,300mm and it is retrofittable in terms of printing width and colour availability for changing market demands. Oliver Baar again promoted high-volume inkjet printing, also in combination with offset if useful, as a way of expanding the print portfolio to enhance reader and customer loyalty, tap into new customer groups as well as networking print and online media. He drew on the example of the Main-Post in Würzburg which produced and distributed personalised covers for its daily newspaper on the KBARotaJET using subscriber data as advertising for reader holidays. The response quote was well above average.
The RotaJET 76 which was launched at Drupa 2012 was a focal point of KBA’s stand and talks at last year’s WPE in Berlin. At this year’s WPE press conference Oliver Baar, project manager for business development digital web presses at KBA, presented the new RotaJET L press platform.

KBA has consequently expanded its service spectrum for own and thirdparty presses in light of the trend towards using existing machines for longer. Press overhauls and relocations, retrofits (e.g. for new ad forms) and modifications, software updates, maintenance packages and all-round technical production support with KBA or PrintHouseService (PHS) staff onsite, have become considerably more important in relation to business with new presses.
Making print more attractive In Germany now three Cortinas (in Trier, Freiburg and Düsseldorf) with integrated coaters have been equipped for the production of semi-commercial products. Users can reach new clients from the financial and creative scene with print finishing. This additional business improves the capacity utilisation and costefficiency of their investments. Until now the option of inline coating using the coldset process has been limited to waterless offset for technical reasons. However, KBA recommends exploiting the technical possibilities available today for striking ad forms, such as super panorama, half-cover, 36 | january-february 2015 | printingreview

firms up older gravure press PROFESSIONAL RETROFITS INSTEAD OF SCRAPPING
K
BA-FT Engineering, based in Frankenthal/Pfalz and member of the Koenig & Bauer Group, has given a 26-year-old gravure press belonging to European gravure printing giant Prinovis a new lease of life. The electrical control system of the press, which is in operation at the firm’s site in Ahrensburg, Germany, was brought into line with cuttingedge technology. The retrofit was carried out within a short period of time to the firm’s satisfaction and means that this old, yet mechanically fully functional press is now fit for the future. Prinovis ordered retrofits on two large gravure presses from KBA-FT Engineering some time ago. The first press went into operation again at the end of March. Along with updating the second press’ electrical control system, provision is made for extensive mechanical addons, whereby the assembly work is scheduled to begin soon. In the current market environment such retrofits pay off since the continued high level of availability of robust presses is guaranteed at a fraction of the cost of a new press. The retrofit carried out comprises the replacement of several control components from the previous vendor, EAE, with the latest technology from Siemens. The existing wiring could be kept thanks to a Plug & Play architecture developed specially for the
interfaces affected thus reducing the installation time at the reelstands, printing units, superstructure, folders and switchboards to a few weeks. Numerous servo-assisted drives were also exchanged including the corresponding controls as well as the complete control level. KBA-FT Engineering’s broad expertise in gravure has already been proven with other orders in the growing business for retrofits. Recently a gravure reelstand with Reliance controls and drives was rebuilt with Siemens technology in Thann, France. In the near future the firm will carry out an extensive upgrade on a press console close to Paris, which comprises the implementation of cutting-edge devices from HMI. The specially designed retrofit concept will facilitate the work of the client and

Hunkeler Innovationdays 2015 in Lucerne
The new KBA RotaJET L platform and RotaJET VL press series for industrial printing will be a hot topic of discussion at the KBA stand in February in Lucerne
KBA presents new RotaJET L and VL inkjet off the reel The new, highly flexible KBA RotaJET L digital press platform will dominate Koenig & Bauer’s (KBA) presence at the Hunkeler Innovationdays from 23 to 26 February in Lucerne. This follows the debut of an operational KBA RotaJET 76 inkjet web press at the same show in 2013. Experts from KBA will be manning a stand in hall 1 (booth no.15) also providing information on the latest and future RotaJET VL applications in industrial digital printing. An operational KBA RotaJET 76 made a spectacular debut at the Hunkeler Innovationdays in 2013.
The modular RotaJET L platform is available in five different web widths from 895 to 1,300mm (35.2 - 51.1in). and can be upgraded to the maximum printing width and colour content at a later date. Additionally, it can be flexibly configured to suit all fundamental application areas in the high-volume digital printing segment. Retrofitting future generations of printing heads is also possible. Users can thus react quickly and economically to changing demands 38 | january-february 2015 | printingreview
without needing to invest in entirely new kit. Along with the new 89130 series based on the RotaJET L platform and the RotaJET 76 (max.
printing width 781mm/30.7in) unveiled at Drupa 2012 for book, commercial, magazine and newspaper printing, KBA has built the RotaJET VL inkjet range with a printing width of over 1.60m (5.2ft) or even over 2m (6.6ft) for industrial applications. The prominent press manufacturer benefits from its wealth of know-how in web guidance and substrate handling accumulated over many years. Decorative printer Interprint therefore recently fired up the first KBA RotaJET VL with a printing width of 1.68m (5.5ft). The partnership between HP and KBA announced at the end of September 2014 for the development and production of a digital press for corrugated printing is based on Koenig & Bauer’s unique experience in precision mechanical engineering for a host of print applications and processes.
KBA expands digital printing portfolio with modular RotaJET 89 – 130 platform NEW KBA ROTAJET L-SERIES: ULTRA FLEXIBLE FOR CHANGING MARKET DEMANDS
K
BA unveiled the most flexible and the most adaptable highvolume inkjet product series in terms of customer demands currently on the market at World publishing Expo 2014 in Amsterdam. The digitalisation of the printing industry is progressing. At the same time in the high-volume inkjet printing segment requirements regarding the configuration, features, maximum web width and productivity of digital printing systems are extremely varied in the book, direct mail, magazine, newspaper and industrial printing market segments addressed by the KBA RotaJET. This is in addition to the change in market demands over time due to the increasing expansion of digital printing. KBA is the first manufacturer to take these circumstances into account with the new retrofittable RotaJET L product series available in various web widths, maximum printing widths and colour content. The KBA RotaJET 89 – 130 printing systems based on this new series supplement the RotaJET 76 which is still available. Future users of the new RotaJET L platform have a huge advantage which allows them to react quickly and economically to changing market conditions and customer demands without the need to invest in entire new kit straight away. The high-performance RotaJET can be optimally configured to suit the respective market and industry environment. The new KBA digital press series includes five RotaJET printing systems which can handle web widths ranging from 895 to
1300mm (35.2 - 51.1in). As all these new systems have been developed based on an identical platform it is possible to upgrade a KBA RotaJET 89 (web width 895mm/35.2in) easily and quickly to a RotaJET 100, RotaJET 112, RotaJET 123 or even a premium RotaJET 130 (web width 1,300mm/51.1in). Furthermore, it is also possible to modify a 1C monochrome system into a 4C colour system. The KBA RotaJET L series is the most flexible and future-proof highvolume inkjet system for users currently on the market. It allows users to react quickly to changing customer demands without the need to invest in entire new kit (2)The RotaJET 130 is currently the only high-volume inkjet system with a web width of 1,300mm to offer top quality 4-colour printing. Therefore the RotaJET 130 represents the ultimate high-end system in high-volume inkjet. Founded on KBA’s long-term development strategy and the press’ consistent modular design the KBA RotaJET has been designed to be retrofitted with future print head generations. This means that the KBA RotaJET 89– 130 platform is the most flexible and future-proof high-volume inkjet system for users currently on the market. What is more, the RotaJET 89-130 systems do not require any adjustment of the usual web widths or print substrate logistics as they might in web offset printing. Thus the KBA RotaJET can even be integrated into existing offset landscapes without any compromises. printingreview | january-february 2015 | 39
printservices – greater flexibility and production capacity
R
elocation and reconfiguration of printing towers at the Times of India in Delhi and Mumbai.
The Times of India (TOI) is one of the most important newspaper publishers among the customers of manroland web systems. The company relies on COLORMAN, GEOMAN, REGIOMAN, and double-width CROMOMAN 4-1 systems as the technical basis for its success. To continue building on its leading position, the Times of India has decided to expand its printing capacities in the Delhi region and increase its flexibility in Mumbai. Two GEOMAN printing towers were recently moved from the TOI printshop in Mumbai to the publisher’s Sahibabad location in northern India near Delhi. An existing GEOMAN system was also expanded to include six towers. TOI now has the prerequisites to produce 48 color pages. Color advertising is an increasingly popular option, especially during festival season in the fall. Now complete, this new configuration makes it possible to cater to these demands and print newspapers with 40 or 48 pages. Thanks to the collaboration between engineers from the main publishing house and colleagues from manroland India, the time required to convert the GEOMAN and get it back up and running could be reduced considerably. COLORMAN in Mumbai now even more flexible The Times of India is also the main user of COLORMAN systems in India. To ensure even greater flexibility in terms of page numbers, two presses in Mumbai were connected across all sections. An additional web path guides two webs from one system through the balloon-former to the folder on the second system. This enables the printing of products with up to four 16-page sections or 64-page newspaper copies. And the original web path can still be used. In addition to additional web leads and turner bar levels, manroland web systems installed a new register control system. Greater availability just in time for festival season Project lead Dr. Ralf Schädlich explains: “The challenge with this project was that the entire system still needed to be available for daily production. The customer could only offer to take a short break from using the system for three days. During this time, we also needed to do all testing and commission the system. At night, the presses kept running at full capacity. The actual conversion process took place in less than three weeks.” 40 | january-february 2015 | printingreview

Hybrid printing: Offset and Digital join forces for newspapers manroland web systems presents modern and visionary options for economic newspaper production
O
ffset and digital printing are linked ever closer. Hybrid newspaper printing offers many advantages. This goes far beyond inkjet imprints and the insertion of digitally printed newspaper supplements. Entire production lines containing both offset and digital printing presses are set to increase the economic viability of print production. Hybrid developments can already be found everywhere, especially in the automotive and commercial vehicle sectors. The crucial advantage of this approach is the flexible selection of the most appropriate technical solution, such as the use of electrical engines or combustion engines depending on the specific application. However, nowadays the same flexibility is also required when it comes to the production of print products, using the same printing system to produce multiple products at the lowest possible cost. manroland web systems is the first printing press manufacturer to offer hybrid newspaper press systems. In addition to the established print finishing systems for digitally printed newspapers, manroland web systems also focuses on its expertise in workflow integration, for example with the DigiLink module. DigiLink allows planning of offset and digital productions from a central workstation, including parallel monitoring of production during printing and in the mailroom. With this unique capability of integrating various print systems with a shared data base, the German printing press manufacturer aims to advance the development of hybrid newspaper printing systems. In line with this strategy, a number of new business and publishing models offer companies numerous opportunities for economic newspaper production and market diversification. IMPRES SIVE INTEGR ATED INKJET IMPRESSIVE INTEGRA Integrated Inkjet caters to creativity, whether in the information and entertainment sector or the development of business models. Made famous by the Springer publishing house and its daily pass for the Internet version of the German Bild newspaper, the imprint of highly variable inkjet data in ongoing newspaper production has been proven effective. The contents may include lottery numbers, current news, QR codes, or areaspecific personalized advertising. As an OEM partner of the Kodak Stream Inkjet technology, manroland web systems can equip and integrate inkjet functionality into web offset print systems of all major manufacturers. The scope of services ranges from providing inkjet print heads up to comprehensive project management for fully automated solutions. In this case, the inkjet module is completely integrated into the press control system. INSERTING DIGIT ALLY PRE-PRINTED SECTIONS DIGITALLY Fully digitized – completely digitally pre-produced advertising and newspaper sections are inserted into offset newspapers. Dynamic, time-saving job changeovers contribute to the economic production of these short-run advertising, topical, and local supplements. Local journalism is upgraded not only through pre-printed sections; some publishing houses have also started to digitally print entire local issues of newspapers. This pays off for small print runs and offers a logistic advantage: in vast countries, the product reaches the customer quickly while lowering shipping costs.

FINISHING DIGIT ALLY PREDIGITALLY PRINTED REELS Division of labor – digitally preprinted reels are processed into advertising and newspaper products in web offset presses. The process allows for flexible scheduling of the reels’ digital pre-print and ensures optimum utilization of the digital printing press’s capacities. Precise register stability is a prerequisite to allow the offset printing press to produce first-rate quality from the prepared reels. manroland web systems’ specialists handle the technical coordination of the digital offset workflow. FULL-FLEDGED HYBRID SYSTEM – DIGIT AL AND OFFSET DIGITAL Continuous hybrid workflow – the combination of a digital printing press with an existing or new web offset printing press is known as a genuine hybrid system. The outcome: perfectly efficient newspaper production. It offers the best cost per copy ratio for every requirement – purely offset printing for high print runs without job changeovers, hybrid productions for part editions of the daily paper with short production cycles and variable formats, and purely digital production for print runs starting from a single copy. The hybrid mode in particular offers a wide range of options – changeovers from one edition to the next are eliminated, for example for a daily where the 4-page jacket for various editions is printed digitally. This lowers the required time, plate, and paper consumption. The lower press speed of the digital printing system is balanced out by eliminating downtimes for changeovers between editions. WHEN DOES HYBRID PAY OFF? The ROI for the digital investment in a hybrid system can be achieved within a few years, especially if additional print orders are produced during the day.

ew clear protective layer printed inline offers a lowcost 10-year outdoor warranty for Traffic colors, eliminating the need for off-line more expensive over-lamination. Matan Digital Printers and ORAFOL Americas Inc.(“ORAFOL”) announce an important breakthrough in traffic sign printing. In a collaborative effort, an innovative clear layer has been developed, for the successful Matan DTS line of digital Traffic Sign printers. The protective layer will be printed over the traffic colors at the same print run and in full print speed. This clear layer provides an extended outdoor protection for the printed signs against fading and weathering. ORAFOL offers a 10-year warranty for
signs printed on ORALITE® Series 5900 High Intensity Prismatic reflective film, printed with Matan green and blue traffic colors and the new clear protective layer on top. The new clear layer will be sold at a price about 5 times lower than regular over laminate, which makes the Matan-ORAFOL system the most cost effective traffic sign solution on the market by far. "Until today, all types of Traffic Signs had to be covered with an overlaminate to ensure outdoor durability against fading and weathering. This over-lamination is both costly and time consuming, involves additional labor work and open to errors. It took two separate processes, first
the printing and then applying the over laminate. Now both the printing and over laminating occur inside the printer in a single digital process, said Mr. Peter Brosch, Manager of Matan USA. "Traffic Sign makers have long been seeking a solution that overcome these obstacles, lowering the production cost and lead times. We now have the solution and it is so much cheaper and faster than any other existing traffic sign making system", added Brosch. 2015: The year of the COLORMAN e:line will soon be here Technical variability successfully sets new standards for newspaper printing
T
he COLORMAN e:line will take up production in 2015 on at least two continents, Europe and Africa. This reflects the popularity of this newspaper printing press with its extensive range of equipment and width variations. Available in various performance classes, at 100,000 copies/hour it is the fastest newspaper press of its class. Currently construction is underway in Bamberg and Nairobi for printing centers for the up-and-coming COLORMAN e:line presses,” says Dieter Betzmeier, Executive Vice President Technology and Project Execution at manroland web systems. “At its introduction three years ago, some of our competitors looked down on the new series as being short-lived. In the meantime, the COLORMAN e:line has won important bids in newspaper printing and created milestones. Today's newspaper printing companies require this technological flexibility and the stepby-step modular retrofitting capacity.” One customer needs a very fast production of local newspaper editions, another is uncertain about the degree of automation and wants to wait. The third requires heatset equipment to enter the market of supplements. manroland web systems can fulfill all these customer demands with the many equipment variations and widths of the COLORMAN. VARIABLE EQUIPMENT IS IN DEMAND The COLORMAN e:line is the

The maximum web width is between 1,700 mm and 1,900 mm, with a performance of between 70,000 and 100,000 copies per hour. Further quality features can also be added to the new operating concept, such as the 11-roller inking unit and format-size ink former roller. Both far exceed the market standard and ensure outstanding print quality. The folder variants PFN-23 or PFN-25 complete the picture with their excellent finishing quality. The Automation Package offers a customized degree of automation that can be retrofitted for greater run length flexibility, better planning efficiency, and less waste. Fully equipped systems feature automated paper logistics, plate transport and plate change, automatic change-over with press presettings, Inline Control systems, and AutoJobChange. FUTUREPROOF FOR STEP -BY STEP-BY -BY-STEP EXPANSION What is the basic principle of the new COLORMAN e:line? With its flexibility (manroland web systems calls it futureproof), the COLORMAN e:line is able to respond to changing market requirements at any time. The core feature is its easy operation with the ultra-modern operating system. Other key elements include the “automation” and “commercial” packages which ensure that printing houses keep their newspaper printing systems up to date and thus competitive.

Unique printing process creates the world’s largest artwork
L
arger-than-life images of cherries, oranges and avocadoes adorn the horseshoe-shaped roof of Rotterdam’s market hall, turning it into a work of art that has been compared to the Sistine Chapel but is actually called “The Horn of Plenty”. The market hall, designed by a team including the architectural firm MVRDV, property developer ProVast and architect Winy Maas, houses not only food stands but an apartment block of 230 flats bending over the market hall in a surreal fashion. The arch of the building is made of natural stones. The artwork consisting of fruits, vegetables, meats, breads and butterflies – created by Dutch artist Arno Coenen – has been printed onto thousands of aluminum panels on the inside arch of the hall in a
process that holds great promise for buildings around the world. The printing company realizing the brightly colored ceiling is TS Visuals, a specialized hard substrate printing company based in the Netherlands. It used the artwork by Arno Coenen who enlisted the help of Pixar Studios to create an image large enough and sharp enough to fill 4,000 aluminum panels. To realize printouts in the desired quality, the resolution had to be equivalent to the resolution required by high quality magazine printers. The resulting digital file holding the images had an impressive size of 1.47TB consisting of 400,000 megapixels. TS Visuals used a process called sublimation, a unique method of applying visuals to coated metal or
54 | january-february 2015 | printingreview
glass. The ink of the printed design is heated to such high temperatures that it turns into a gas and penetrates the coated aluminum panel. It transfers and then forms a durable permanent layer inside the coating. The panels and coatings were developed by TS Visual’s research department; they are graffiti-resistant, UV-resistant and can be cut into any desired shape. For the Rotterdam market hall, 4000 panels, each two millimeters thick and measuring 1,50 meters in width and length, were decorated with a total of 6 kilometers of unique images, using the sublimation process, to create a visual totaling 11,000 square meters. Because of the sound requirements of the building, the panels were perforated. They were also coated with a glossy, scratch-resistant finish. TS Visuals emphasizes that sublimation offers a large number of novel possibilities for applications in architecture, exteriors, interiors, transport, infrastructure, advertising and marketing.
