Apprenticeships in a nutshell All apprenticeships at Worthing College have entry criteria – you must achieve a certain level of prior learning to be able to start the course. Entry requirements vary depending on the course and the person specification from the employer so please check on the apprenticeships section of the Worthing College website.

How it will benefit you? Earning a salary and holiday pay Your employer is responsible for paying your wage. The national minimum wage for apprentices from 1st April 2017 is £3.50 per hour and this applies to time working and time spent in training as part of the apprenticeship. The wage applies to all apprentices aged under 19 and apprentices aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship. The majority of employers pay above the minimum wage. How long will it take? Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level. There will be an Independent End Point Assessment for Apprenticeship Standards as opposed to frameworks that we will offer from April 2018 and you will not achieve the apprenticeship without passing this. If you are required to do Functional Skills qualifications you must achieve these before you are put forward to the end point assessment. Who can be an Apprentice? Anyone living in England over the age of 16, not in full-time education and with a job can be an apprentice. This applies to existing or new members of staff in the workplace. For existing staff, apprenticeships are a great opportunity for CPD (continuing professional development), career development and progression to a higher level in the workplace, offering a training and support programme tailored to your sector’s needs. To start an apprenticeship you must be employed within a business that covers the range of work required to complete your chosen qualification. You must also have a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. If you are a prospective apprentice and are not currently in any relevant employment, we can help with this. Method of Delivery & Assessment Our current apprenticeship framework programmes are assessed by a combination of portfolios, online tests and practical assessments in the workplace or College workshops. There will be either day or block release to College dependent on the apprenticeship, or this may be able to be delivered entirely in your place of work.
