Autumn 2014

Results worth celebrating at Worthing College Worthing College staff and students celebrated the first set of exam results at the new college campus. A Level students achieved a 97.4% pass rate marginally bettered by BTEC Level 3 students at 97.5%.

24 A Level subjects achieved 100% pass rates up on last year’s figures. In the last year, applications to, and take up of places at University rose by 3%. Principal, Peter Corrigan said “Examination success and the wider student experience support our students’ progression as well as their employability skills. Increasing

numbers of our students are successfully moving on to University, employment and further training with the right qualifications and skills. We are particularly proud of our high achieving students. 117 students achieved three or more A*/A grades in 2013/14”.

Hot on the heels of the summer results was enrolment 2014 when we were delighted to welcome more students than ever before to Worthing College. So many students chose Worthing College this year that we decided to set up additional classes in some of our most popular subjects; Maths, English, Science, Business, Law, Creative Media, Information Technology, Health and Social Care and Sport, to name but a few. Worthing College was the college of first choice for nearly 1800 students this year and we are pleased so many more students have decided to be a member of our college community.

A very big welcome to the Autumn edition of Celebrating Worthing College. The start of the autumn term is always an exciting time. It is a time for new beginnings, fresh starts and ambition. It is also when we celebrate the hard earned results of the previous year just in time for those important next steps to be taken. In August 2014 Worthing College celebrated the first set of results at our outstanding new college campus with fantastic achievements of our talented students and staff. These results reflected the quality of teaching and learning and outstanding learning environments the college offers and is probably why so many students chose to study at Worthing College after their GCSEs. The start of the autumn term is also when we tend to welcome new staff and say farewell to others, and this year was no different. Looking back on the summer it was a very busy time with international students studying English and enjoying the cultural experiences of the South Coast. Also the Forest School Holiday club provided much enjoyment for children who enjoyed being outdoors, playing and learning in their natural environment; baking bread, pasta, chilli con carne, smores and hot chocoloate drinks on the fire every day.

2

Further improvements to our new college were also completed during the summer and we look forward to opening our fabulous new conference centre in October. This will provide much needed meeting space for local businesses to develop their skills, network and grow. We are delighted to welcome West Sussex Music to Worthing College on Friday evenings and Saturdays. West Sussex Music is the largest provider to children and young people of high-quality music education in West Sussex. Trips and sport, summer shows and developing employability skills are all reasons to celebrate this autumn. Fundraising for charity is never far away from our hearts as you will see from the Macmillan coffee morning the annual charity walk from Worthing College to Brighton. I hope you enjoy reading this edition of Celebrating Worthing College, there is much to celebrate and be proud of.

College+ Academies Clubs and Activities During the last year Worthing College students benefitted from access to four academies in Sport, Maths, Visual Arts and Performing Arts. The scale and growth of enrichment across the college is outstanding including participation in clubs, societies, trips and visits. The college Workstore arranged 3000 work related learning experiences, 178 students were members of the Sports Academy and 200 students participated in the Visual Arts Academy end of year exhibition. In the Performing Arts Academy there was a wide range of performances to over 1600 audience members. There is a wide variety of weekly clubs and activities at worthing College. Many of them are organised by students, some just for fun, others to prepare for competitions. There are more than 20 different activities that students can get involved with, in addition to termly events such as International Day and Safe Drive Stay Alive.

Shhh... Worthing College students at University of Sussex library

Pre-U students visit Sussex University in June to explore the amazing library facilities which are free to use for any local people. Teacher of Science Gabe Crisp took some of the Y12 Pre-U Students embarking on their ‘5000 Independent Research Report’ to check out the journals, articles and books available.

Sudents are studying topics such as: • Is Maths a human construct or a feature of the universe? • Is a gender-neutral classroom possible? • Can society function without money? • What is the best explanation for dreams?

• Was it ethical to use the Atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The students had an amazing afternoon and really enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere, studying in a peaceful and silent space and experiencing degree level research.

Jacob’s computer game lends a helping hand to children with arm injuries and wins gold award Nuffield Research Placements provide 30 Sussex students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths course are eligible to apply and we were delighted that students Jacob Pennels, Michael Shelton and Sophie Barret were successful with their applications. Jacob writes here about his experience: “For my Nuffield Research Project I designed and developed an interactive computer game designed to encourage children with arm injuries

4

to complete their physiotherapy. The game involved the player moving their hand to pop balloons and get points. This also stretched the muscles in their arm, helping them rehabilitate them after injury. Completing the project and seeing it work was a very rewarding experience as I knew it was all my work. The skills I developed in research and design have been hugely beneficial in my college work. And to top it all off, I avheived a Gold CREST award; a UCAS recognised qualification and a superb topic for my personal statement.”

Celebrating apprentice successes stone to achieving this. Well done Georgie.

Congratulations to Georgina Lee who has successfully completed the Level 3 apprenticeship in Business and Administration, in the Principalship Office. Before her apprenticeship, Georgie attended Northbrook College to complete a Level 2 Beauty Therapy course. However she decided to complete a Business Administration Apprenticeship because it was something that she wanted to pursue and she knew it would open a lot of doors for future jobs. Georgie really enjoyed the busy atmosphere in the Principalship Office, working with a range of people at different levels. She found the role very interesting and using the new E-portfolio system, enhanced her IT skills greatly.

We welcome all our new Apprentices as part of the Worthing College staff community. We have Learning Mentors in a range of Curriculum Teams. They have all made a flying start with their apprenticeship and are now timetabled into different classes, so look out for them in your class! Welcome also to our new Sports Activity

Georgie has now been promoted to a full time role as Personal Assistant to the Principal and Vice Principal, and her apprenticeship was a stepping

They work with local schools around Worthing to help younger children achieve their potential in Sport! It is amazing how much these apprentices change the experience for young children when they teach them Sports and hold extra-curricular activities. Most apprentices who have chosen this apprenticeship would love to go on to teaching. This experience will help their university applications.

Andreea Amaximoaie started her career as an apprentice in the Marketing and Admissions Team at Worthing College. Having successfully completed a Level 3 Business and Administration Apprenticeship Andreea progressed to a traineeship in Human Resources where she was supported to complete a Level 5 Certificate in Human Resource Management. Andreea has now successfully progressed to a full time, permanent position at Chichester College as an Administration Assistant. Her apprenticeship was the first step towards getting a permanent job in Business. Well done Andreea.

Finally we’d like to welcome our new team of Personal Training and Wellbeing Apprentices. They are starting to receive clients in the Worthing College gym and are already instructing staff with the help of training programmes. Fine Art trip Saatchi Trip to London In September 73 AS and A2 Fine Art students visited the Saatchi Gallery to view the latest exhibition, Pangaea: New Art from Africa and Latin America. As one would expect from the Saatchi Gallery the exhibition featured diverse contemporary works by 16 artists.

Students benefited from a guided tour, this helped them to understand the ideas informing the work, and tune into the cultural references. Students were challenged, confused, interested and surprised by some of the works. Of particular interest was a gallery sized installation featuring

hundreds of giant ants, their bodies composed of cast human sculls, by the Columbian artist Rafael Gomezbarros. This installation had previously been shown on the facades of national monuments and historical buildings.

Coffee morning goes down a treat September saw Worthing College take part in the Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ to support this fantastic cancer charity. Staff were asked to contribute by baking and donating cakes and pastries which were then judged (and eaten) by the enthusiastic judges and staff.

The winners were Emma Prince for her moist and delicious dairy-free apple and cider cake, and Dawn Leggett’s savoury filo parcels. Thanks go to all those who donated cakes and to Marketing and Events Apprentice Sarah Goldsmith who organised the event which raised over £80. Tasty!

Heritage Lottery Fund project sees Worthing College dig deeper into WW1 with Worthing Museum and the University of the Third Age September saw Hamish McGilivary, curator at Worthing museum and Justin Russell, WW1 archeologist from Archeology South East visit BTEC SubDip Creative Media Production student to launch the ‘Training for War’ project. The project has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and is a collaboration between Worthing museum, Worthing College and the University of the Third Age. The presentation showed how Buckingham Park in Shoreham was home to 20,000 British and Canadian soldiers from 1914 to 1919 and set

out the aims of the project which include gathering evidence and collating different kinds of research

Visiting The Keep

As part of the ‘Shoreham Army Camp’ project with Worthing Museum, the BTEC SubDip Creative Media Production students visited The Keep at Sussex University, Falmer to learn about how to access documents at the archive and specialist training in handling archive documents. During the visit, students learnt about the work of conservators and archivists and examined documents relating to the Great War, including coroner’s reports, Sussex police records and local maps.

outcomes from a wide range of sources including The Keep, local museums, Shoreham Fort, veterans of more recent conflicts, local historians and archeological digs and map/ aerial photograph analysis. The project also requires students to produce a number of documentaries exploring different aspects of life at the camp and exhibiting the research outcomes at a major exhibition at Worthing Museum in April 2015. The photo above shows BTEC Media students searching for artefacts from a trip to ‘Slonk Hill’ with archeology South East, Royal Archeological Society and Worthing Museum. They found some .22 and 303 bullet cases from WW1, some general service buttons and other remnants of uniform as well as some metal from the huts the soldiers were billeted in.

Good day for Jamie with recognition for ‘Bad Day’ Worthing College Film Studies student, Jamie De Vivo got a ‘special mention’ in the WJEC Moving Image Awards 2014 for his short crime drama, ‘Bad Day’. There were nearly 600 entries from across the UK and he made it into the top 32. Jamie’s film will be put on a showreel that will be released in the Autumn. This is the first year that Film Studies students have produced video based creative projects so it’s a fantastic start and reflects on all of the hard work that the students have done.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE We have two artists in residency this year (Barry Williams, a photographer/sculptor and Sarah Sepe Drawing and textile artist) who will be working in the visual Arts learning zone and later in the grounds of Worthing College. Barry will be working with recycled materials to make an outdoor sculpture and Sarah will be producing a 3d textile work that will hang from the ceiling in reception. Both works should be included in the Worthing Art Trail in 2015.

Visual Arts & Media Summer Show celebrates students’ success Opening night of the Visual Arts and Media Exhibition 2014 was buzzing with excitement as students, parents and staff come together to celebrate all of the hard work that has taken place since September 2013. There was an electricity in the air as students showed off their sketchbooks, scripts, posters and short films to family and friends. A huge crowd gathered, indeed the entire floor resembled a gallery bustling with excited faces. In the media rooms trailers, music videos and short films seem to captivate their audiences, whilst the posters and magazine covers attract a constant barrage of compliments from parents, students and staff. Stand out A Level work such as “Hammer’ by Hugo Bainbridge, a homage to Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Drive’ starring Ryan Gosling impressed audiences, as did ‘The Blossom’, (a homage to the superhero franchises which currently dominate modern moviegoers) produced by Matt Wright, Adam Goacher and Ellie Snow, all of whom were nominated for Arts Academy Awards. In the end it was Matt Wright who was rewarded for all his efforts and constant dedication by scooping up the Award for A2 Media. Alex Starr took home the Award for AS Media, having produced one of the best horror film trailers we’ve seen. Titled ‘Day 7’, it’s a first hand account of a man who is captured by unseen forces when he decides to investigate an old abandoned house.

10

“Overall the technical and creative skills on show were really an impressive sight to behold”, one member of staff commented on the professional finish of the AS Media Studies ‘Grindhouse’ style DVD covers and the posters. The students continue to embrace the quality of the facilities provided here at Sanditon Way. The vast campus has provided our filmmakers and photographers with a fantastic backdrop to shoot their productions. Year 12 students aiming to progress to A2 Media were thoroughly impressed by the work on display and comments ranging from “extremely professional” to “engaging and inspirational” were expressed. One student commented on Alex Starr’s Day 7 trailer by highlighting the “advanced level of editing, the initiative used” and that it left them feeling “Inspired”.

Conker Championships a big hit Over 30 students competed in Worthing College’s first Conker Championship, which took place in September using conkers from the college’s own Horse Chestnut tree. The winner was Sam Page (Year 12) with his favourite conker ‘Braveheart’ which smashed at least 12 others. International Students from countries as far afield as China and Brazil were fascinated by this traditional English ‘sport’. Proceeds will go to the Student Union charity, Worthing’s branch of SCOPE.

Work Store - working hard for students Since the launch of The Work Store last year, demand for the service has grown and continues to do so. Already this term we have seen more students accessing the weekly drop in service, requesting individual appointments for help and advice and also accessing The Work Store Facebook page to seek information on job vacancies, work placements and careers events. The Work Store has supported the curriculum by attending classes in Health and Social Care and has planned entire an year ’s events including themed months which will promote activities such as volunteering, improving your CV, job searches and interactive career assistance. Outside of the college, organisations are actively seeking to use the services of The Work Store by advertising job vacancies on

the Facebook page, providing collaborative projects with students and visiting the weekly drop in session to promote opportunities available within their own organisations. Future plans in The Work Store include the provision of themed careers presentations, the first of which will take place in the autumn term and will focus on careers in The Marine and Maritime sector aimed at students and staff in the STEM subjects. There are also plans to work with the Business curriculum team to provide enterprise events such as table top sales. March 2015 is Employability Month and a series of activities are planned to help progress students, not applying to university, towards employment. It looks like it’s going to be a busy and exciting year for The Work Store!

Nursery and Forest School holiday club make the most of the summer The nursery held its annual summer fair on the college field. We had a lovely sunny day and we were joined by lots of families for picnics, bouncy castle, play time and ice creams. We said goodbye to several children in the nursery who have now gone to school. Several of them had been with us since they were babies so even though it is sad to say goodbye it is a very exciting time for them. We had a lovely day out at Drusilla’s with them all and also held a leavers’ party in the West Café with the bouncy castle, lots of games and a yummy tea We made the most of the sunny weather over the summer by getting out and about, with the children having some lovely trips to the park, walking in the woods by the golf course and also getting the bus to Broadwater. In the nursery we are currently planning our big toddle which we do every year in aid of Barnardos. We will be working alongside the PE department coming up with some exciting ideas of what to do with the children.

12

We had a very successful 5 weeks in the forest school holiday club and even though we had a few wet days we still had lots of fun!! We did several themed days with the army day being very popular testing out our camouflage skills hiding in the tress and also the wild west day with jail building and lassoing. We tested out our cooking skills and managed to cook 25 different meals and puddings on the fire with the all day breakfast and giant snowballs being the most popular.

Students give 5 stars to inspirational performance of ‘Once’ at the Phoenix The BTEC Musical Theatre classes attended a trip to see Once - the boy meets girl, forms band, conquers the world hit musical - at London’s Phoenix Theatre in September. They had great fun singing songs on the couch trip, most importantly trying to sing their song louder than the people next to them – typical of theatre students. Stopping for a half hour lunch break at the infamous Covent Garden, where they got a chance to experience different foods from the market stalls and explore the bustling square, which oozed culture and diversity. The show was fantastic! The perfectly timed choreography reflected the Irish mood perfectly. All of the characters played instruments and were their own band throughout the show. Completely enthralling the students as they left having enjoyed the show thoroughly, especially the free seat order service allowing them to get food and drink in the interval without having to move! Students gave it five stars describing it as ‘completely inspirational’ for aspiring musical theatre students, as it was ‘not what they expected’ but still ‘blew them away!’

Forthcoming events October 2014:
 • 7th - Boy Blue’s ‘The Five and the Prophecy of Prana’ at The Brighton Dome (AS/A2 Dance & Yr 12 BTEC Musical Theatre students)

Gibson Knott, Lord’s Seat and Barf - Public Services students experience Wainwright’s country The students who attended were Martin Brooks, Ryan Brown, Sophie Cole and Martina Moravcikova (Year 13s who enjoyed the trip last year and came back for seconds) along with Year 12s George BradyHoy, Heather Cooper, Charlie Davis, Liam Edwards, Ricky Palfreman, Beth Pemberton-Hill, Sam Upperton and Luke Young. What about next year we were asked. Something different Colin and I thought, hopefully a visit to the First World War battlefields – anyone interested? Thanks must go to Jack Churchett for ably assisting during the week, to his wife Ann for providing the first night’s dinner and also to our Mountain Leader, Phil Maynard. “It’s absolutely fantastic!” said Sam to his Mum when he called her on his mobile phone whilst sitting on the top of Gibson Knott in the Lake District. Well that made our week, as well as not being rained on in what is on record as the wettest place in England with an average annual rainfall of 3.15m (124” for those of us who speak imperial). Sam was one of the dozen Year 12 and 13 public services students who spent four days walking the hills made famous by Wainwright; Lord’s Seat and Barf, Rosthwaite to Watendlath and on to High Tove, Castle Crag and Helm Crag taking in Gibson Knott. The group stayed in a remote private hostel owned by K Fellfarers Club at Seathwaite located right at the end of the Borrowdale valley (no mobile phone signal).

14

On Wednesday the group also went Ghyll scrambling at Stoneycroft Ghyll led by instructors from Chase Adventures. After donning attractive wetsuits and helmets the students spent an hour and a half sliding down rocks, over waterfalls and jumping into pools including the “washing machine” getting thoroughly wet and challenging some comfort zones. Whilst the last day’s planned walk up to Helvellyn was cancelled mainly due to low cloud and temperatures the alternative route to Helm Crag proved challenging and provided the group with yet more of the fabulous views The Lakes has to offer. High spirits, laughter and banter were all in good use throughout the week’s trip.

In September the Yr12 BTEC Public Ser vice students were once again invited to Durrington High School to run the teambuilding activities for their Year 8 Teambuilding Day. The students ran 20 bases with over 200 students taking part over 2 days. They organised the teams of students, explained the activities & scored them. Chris Davis, the organiser from DHS commented that ‘the team were excellent, polite and a credit to your college. Please congratulate them and hope we can use them again next year.’

Speaking of trips... Social Science students go far

After their exams had finished, we took the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students on a trip to London. Some of the students had never visited London before so it was an exciting opportunity for them. First we took a boat trip down the river Thames to the Thames Barrier and then stopped off at Greenwich for lunch, narrowly missing the lightning strike, which struck the Shard on that day. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ uk-england-london-27529745

When we got back to Westminster, we took them via Downing Street and on to Convent Garden where they watched some street entertainment. It was a great day and a great way for the students to see London.

The ESOL students also went to Blacklands Farm for a Teambuilding day on 18th September. It was an amazing day for these students. The groups worked together excellently as a team and it was great to see so many countries and cultures getting on well and working well together. It helped them all really bond together as a group.

Other trips were made to Harry Potter World, Highdown Hill and Brighton Pavilion. Trips like this really help ESOL students practise their language skills.

Exchange trip to US The US college exchange with Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland Ohio has been running since 1992an impressive 22 years! Every year we take students to Cleveland for 2 weeks and they return to us in the Summer to stay with Host families. The trip has been hugely successful and students have described it as “a life changing experience. We are lucky to have some great students going out in October and we are recruiting for our next trip in September 2015. If you want to experience a trip of a lifetime then contact t.bond@ worthing.ac.uk or join our Worthing Shaker Facebook page.

As part of the scheme 8 American high school students joined us from Cleveland Ohio in June. They stayed with us for two weeks and joined the our students in some of their lessons purely to see how an English College works.

September 2014 has seen the largest ever number of Social Science students continue their academic studies at Universities throughout England and Wales. Students are currently studying at Queen Marys and Goldsmiths in London as well as at Universities as far afield as Gloucester, Plymouth, Bedford and Bangor. As you would expect many students opt to continue their studies relatively close to home with Southampton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Brighton and Winchester all proving to be popular destinations. A number of Social Science students are also beginning their studies at some of the exclusive Russell Group of Universities which this year has included students gaining places at both Birmingham and York Universities. With so many successful Social Science students now at Universities throughout England and Wales the question you need to ask yourself is where do you want to go next after studying Social Science at Worthing College?

Keeping active helps your academic chances Usually when you’re running on that treadmill you’re just thinking about improving your fitness. But did you know that physical exercise also works out your brain. People who exercsie throughout their lives show less signs of their brain ageing as they get older, so why not boost your academic year by getting active. Take a look at what is on offer. “I chose to become a Personal Trainer so I can pass on my enthusiasm for being active and show people that it is not all about lifting weights and how being active and healthy can boost the way you feel. There

are so many activities out there that can engage you so come along to the gym and ask for a 1-1 session” Phoebe Thorpe Personal Training and Wellbeing Apprentice

Students give Graphic account of Malevich show at Tate Modern AS and A2 Graphic Communication students visited Tate Modern in late September to see the Vladamir Malevich retrospective. The exhibition will be linked to the students visual investigations in current projects centred around ‘Identity’. Direct connections with Fine Art and Design were made at the visit, investigating Design in Art and Art in Design. Aspects of Malevich’s work lean toward bold compositional structures that the Design work has gained influence from. Students broadened their understanding of the visual style in Malevich’s graphic layouts and paintings. An additional focus for students was to gain an understanding of how Tate Modern communicates through its visual

identity; this will then in turn become a foundation for the students semi self directed projects. Here’s what some of the students said about the show: Leo Bant – “I liked the rebelliousness of the visual artwork produced by Malevich, as at the time his work was a drastic and bold change from the regular artwork produced in Russia.” Elliot Spiers – “The Tate modern has a clean, crisp feel to it. Throughout there are lots of graphical shapes embedded into the design of the building which really enhance the look and feel of the building. There is also a lot of Typography with vivid colours.”

Alex Harvey - “The layout of Malevich’s work made me think about creating meaning beyond the artwork itself through how the pieces are displayed.”

Climb every mountain, ford every stream: Public Service students living the dream The Year 12 Level 3 Public Services students have been participating in practical sessions of mountain biking and rock climbing as part of their course of study. Thursday mornings are spent biking across the South Downs learning and developing the required skills and techniques under the close scrutiny of Adur Outdoor Activities Centre Instructors aiming to achieve the highest grade possible. The other half of the group are also attempting to achieve NICAS Level 1/2 climber status as they tackle the 10m indoor climbing wall whilst learning about French sport grades, crimps, pockets, jugs holds as well as techniques such as smearing and bridging. For the majority of students this takes them out of their comfort zone but so far the picture is looking good for grades! It’s och aye the “No” as students opt to keep Scotland as part of the union To coincide with the Scottish referendum on independence Worthing College launched its own referendum. Social Sciences classes used lesson time to discuss Scottish independence and how significant any changes would be to the UK and it’s constitution. Once students had concluded their discussion a referendum was held in the library. Students were asked to decide Yes or No to the same question posed in the Scottish referendum, “Should Scotland be an independent country?” After two days of voting the result in the College referendum was an emphatic “No” with 66% of the students voting against independence and only 33% voting for it. Students did a good job of understanding the importance of the referendum to the UK.

Celebrating Worthing College

Annual Charity Walk starts with a bang Academy passion as he refused to give in even though on crutches. All students successfully made it to Brighton, definitely earning at least one Brighton Pier Doughnut! The walk

26 September saw Worthing College once again embark on a 14 mile challenge to Brighton. The annual walk in aid of Chestnut Tree house was this year started by the one and only Steve Scott, Commonwealth Gold Medallist in Double Trap Shooting. Interviewed but Jesse Beecham, Steve discussed how he found the games, what motivates him and how he prepared for such a fierce competition. Steve’s success was not a one-off as he also won Bronze at the World Championship, stylishly modelled by some of the netball academy (Saxona Woolgar, Amelia Smith, Ella Forest, Morgan Barnard). Determination set in as students were quickly covering ground demonstrated by Alex Bryant who displayed the Worthing College

was a huge success with money not collected in yet the total is still building. Don’t forget you can still donate at https://www.justgiving. com/Worthing-College-Sport

Providing health services on site enables us to offer advice and support to students to help them make informed choices about their health and lifestyles and help them to stay healthy and on track for success. The Worthing College Health and Wellbeing Centre provides a range of health services with a view to maintaining and improving the health of the college’s students within the educational environment both on a physical and mental level. A confidential service works on a drop in basis and is completely free of charge for students.

Registered nurses and other specialists including counsellors provide a confidential service for students including: • MOT checks including blood pressure, weight and height, blood sugar levels. • Smoking cessation. • Healthy eating and weight management. • Sexual health and contraceptive services. • General health enquiries. • Professional counselling. There is a range of information available and we run health promotion campaigns to increase students’ awareness of various health issues. We also aim to offer health education sessions based on student led agendas.
