Celebrating Worthing College July 2013

Fantastic evening of celebration at Pavilion Theatre On Friday 21 June 2013 Worthing College hosted a fantastic evening of celebration for Worthing at the Pavilion Theatre, with dinner and some fabulous entertainment. Performing Arts students (on the Pavilion stage for the very first time) wowed the audience with numbers from the shows Grease, Chicago and We Will Rock You. Guests of honour The Mayor of Worthing Robert Smytherman and Mayoress Norah Fisher, and Tim Loughton MP attended along with local Councillors and business leaders. The evening was hosted by Principal Peter Corrigan, students and staff from Worthing College.

The Mayor of Worthing - Councillor Robert Smytherman with Student Governor Gabby Slater (left) and Performing Arts students entertain the guests (above).

We would like to thank everyone who celebrated with us on the night and pledged their support for the college in so many ways. Local businesses were keen to support a wide range of areas such as Biology, Visual Arts and Media, Law, the Health and Wellbeing Centre, Travel and Tourism and much, much more. Many local businesses offered work experience and apprenticeship opportunities for students and we

look forward to working further with them at the new college. Students were very much the focus of the evening, not only providing fabulous entertainment but also by welcoming guests on arrival and being part of the catering team. Students from Plumpton College produced the red wine and fantastic flower arrangements for the dining tables.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression (continued from front page) The new college promises a fantastic future for young people and adult learners in Worthing and the surrounding area. It will provide superb new facilities for teaching and learning and will inspire students to achieve and succeed. A bright new future beckons for Worthing College with the move from the old site in Bolsover Road to a magnificent new campus at The Warren in Hill Barn Lane, Worthing.

“The evening was a huge success. Everybody who came enjoyed the fabulous entertainment from our talented students. The food was superb. However, best of all was the growing sense of excitement and anticipation about the new Worthing College at The Warren. Everybody I spoke to cannot wait to visit and see the new facilities. We still have limited places available for September 2013. Apply now to be part of our growing success.” Peter Corrigan, College Principal

EDITORIAL I am absolutely delighted to be writing this editorial just as the new Worthing College becomes a reality. We have worked so hard and waited so long for this time to come, I almost can’t believe that the next time I write this I will be sitting at a lovely new desk in the new Worthing College at the Warren, overlooking the south downs to the north and the sea to the south, fabulous.

Councillor Hazel Thorpe and Councillor Robin Rogers

Tina Webster and Bob Partridge

With new student Introductory Days and Enrolment just around the corner the excitement is building and we can’t wait to show off our great new college. Apart from all the wonderful new classrooms, cafeterias, library, gym, shops and health and wellbeing centre there are loads of great new learning zones for students. These are the ‘piece de resistance’. Large open spaces in all curriculum areas for students to study independently, in comfort, with a range of resources and open access. Seeing is believing as far as our new learning zones are concerned, so do come to our open morning on 6 July to be one of the first to see inside. There is a lovely new nursery and forest school - bigger and better than ever. Once our very youngest clients see this they will not want to go anywhere else!

Vice Principal Paul Riley and Caroline Riley

Dr David Mannings and Paula Russell

I couldn’t end this editorial without reference to our evening of celebration on 21 June. This has to have been the most exciting event we have ever organised. The support and generosity of our guests and partners was fantastic. Our Performing Arts Students were the cream of the crop as they entertained the audience with their performances on stage. My thanks to the team at the college and at the Pavilion Theatre for making it such a great event. There is so much to celebrate at Worthing College as you will see as you read through the pages of this edition of Celebrating Worthing College. So, if you know of any young people who have not yet made up their mind to come here in September, I would say ‘apply now - make Worthing College your learning zone’.

Special day for students has a real international flavour

Worthing College students come from all over the world, and they worked together to provide a brilliant International Day in May. Students from about 15 different countries including Brazil, Poland, Bangladesh, China and the Democratic Republic of Congo prepared information displays about their home countries, and most also provided a taste of authentic food. This drew large crowds of students and staff. Music from Mexico and Brazil (at the same time!) contributed to a great party atmosphere. Apparently the Brazilians kept partying for an hour after everyone else had left. Italian student Ludovica Chiacchierini who plans to study Economics at Queen Mary University of London next year said: “It was great. I really enjoyed finding out more about the different countries and cultures fellow students come from.

Great British tea party a great send off for students On the last week of term we held a Great British Tea Party to say goodbye to our International students who were leaving in both Year 12 and 13. The tables were beautifully decorated with fresh roses, serviettes and cake stands and tea was served in teapots covered with a variety of colourful tea cosies much to the bemusement of our students.

Everyone tucked into typical English tea fare such as scones with jam and cream and a selection of English cakes: lemon drizzle, victoria sponge, chocolate brownies and flapjacks. Several members of staff joined us which was much appreciated by the students and the Modern Foreign Language staff did their best to give service with a smile! A truly British experience.

‘Working as a Volunteer’ One of the units that the BTEC L2 Workskills students complete is Working as a Volunteer. For this unit the students are required to find a volunteering activity that suits their skills and interest. Activities that students have engaged in recently include working in charity shops, helping with local fundraising events and providing regular help to vulnerable neighbours. In another unit (Alternatives to Paid Work), students enjoyed a visit from a volunteer for The Samaritans who came in to talk about the work they do both in the local community and nationally. The visit prompted a few of the students to organise an event in College to help a local charity shop connected to The Samaritans. The students organised and promoted a week-long event in March during which staff and students were encouraged to bring in an item to donate to the charity shop. Collection points were set up and manned by the students during the week which attracted fantastic support. At the end of the week the students sorted the donations, bagged them up and took them to the charity shop where they were gratefully received - around 15-20 black plastic sacks of donations were the result of their efforts! “I really would like to thank the students for what they managed to achieve for the shop through their hard work” said Marlene Butler from The Samaritans.

Performing Arts students get audiences rocking with two stunning shows Worthing College students from the Academy of Performing Arts pulled out all the stops with brilliant versions of two great shows: the perennial teen favourite ‘Grease’ and Ben Elton’s musical tribute to Queen, ‘We Will Rock You’. Matthew O’Hagan and Polly Lewis put in strong performances in the starring roles of Danny and Sandy

as members of the Jets and the Pink Ladies in the high school musical romance.

They

were

brilliantly

supported by the rest of a very enthusiastic and professional cast. The show really rocked along at a rapid pace with everyone dancing their hearts out to numbers such as Greased Lightning, Tell Me More and You Better Step Up.

8

In June, students rocked us with their version of We Will Rock You a visual and musical delight based on the songs of legendary rock band Queen. Set in the future where live music and individuality is forbidden, it gave all the cast a chance to dress up and show off as a variety of rock star characters such as the Bohemians, Killer Queen, Galileo, Scaramouche and the Ga Ga police. Outstanding!

End of the pier show The Academy of Arts at Worthing College offers students who are studying on Visual Arts and Media courses, a range of enriching and interesting opportunities and activities that support and extend their learning and promote educational progression. This

year

we

congratulate

our

students Connie Hebenton, Hannah Rowan and Rhiane Smith, on their achievements in the Creative Waves arts project, led by Nadia Chalk and Vanessa Breen. Nadia Chalk and Vanessa Breen, who run Creative Waves community arts, worked with 20 young people at a pop up art studio at the Sidney Walter Centre, Worthing. The course was funded by Community Central with the aim of inspiring students to create a piece of artwork worthy of a place in the exhibition on Worthing Pier. Nadia Chalk from Creative Waves said “They all exceeded our expectations and worked extremely hard to develop their ideas and skills, resulting in a very high standard of work. Their artwork is on permanent display, on the glass panels, along the central walkway at the Southern end of the pier and will remain there until April 2014. Feedback from Councillors, the general public and students has been overwhelmingly positive. It is a great platform for students to experience the reality of an exhibition in a public space. It also improves the look of the pier and encourages people to view great artwork.”

10

Rhiane Smith, one of the successful Fine Art students from Worthing College said: “Participating in the Creative Waves Workshop allowed me to produce a piece of work outside of my Fine Art A-Level. I was given the opportunity to use mixed media materials before using paint to generate a final painting for the Worthing Pier. My painting depicted the heads of two figures and

I used a variety of expressive marks to paint into the piece. Throughout the workshop I was able to talk with both Nadia and Vanessa about my ideas and influences whilst also receiving support from them about how my painting was progressing. I would recommend the Creative Waves Workshop to students as it is an opportunity to produce a piece of experimental artwork whilst interacting with other students.”

End of the year show draws the crowds The Visual Arts and Media Summer Exhibition opened to the public on Friday 14th June, Monday 17th, and Tuesday 18th June. The Private view took place on 13th June when Worthing College Principal Peter Corrigan handed out the annual awards (see nominations list right) to students in front of an appreciative audience of friends, relatives and art lovers.

Students reflect on their success in STEM Project

Under the expert guidance of Alan White, a group of Worthing College

students received great recognition at the University of Brighton for a

presentation based on their STEM (encouraging Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics) Project. They received excellent feedback from their link company, Automotive Specialist SMR of Porchester and, after stringent assessment, they each received a prestigious Golf Crest Award. Additionally the outcomes from their project on wing mirror molding are being incorporated into the production mechanisms at SMR. Ryan Bannister Sophie Johnson, Thomas Mendes, Sasha Oliver and Oliver Wilkins worked on the project and gave the presentation which they later repeated at Worthing College to staff and students.

Worthing College’s doctors of the future

Four students from Worthing College have successfully met the toughest challenge for A level students and been offered places to study for medical degrees in September 2013. Alaina Turner has a place at the Royal Veterinary College to read Veterinary Medicine; Susie CrockerBuque (Keele University), and Annie Parker (Nottingham University, not pictured) have places to read medicine; Sarah McClory was also offered a place to read medicine by both Birmingham and Cardiff Universities, but has decided to read Chemistry at Southampton. To get this far the students have had to excel in a wide range of academic and non-academic pursuits. They are confidently expected to get the required straight As in their A Levels this summer. In addition they have been successful in both the UKCAT and the BMAT entry tests, one or other of which is required by

most universities, and they need to demonstrate a wide range of personal qualities and achievements including having to carry out extensive work experience and performing well in very challenging interviews. Through its Aspire Programme for high achieving students Worthing College offers considerable support to students to help maximise their chances of success, including running a medical conference for A Level students in conjunction with Worthing Hospital, liaising with

Elite League play-off final: Worthing College play their part but lose out in “great advert for college rugby” Coleg Llandrillo proved to be too strong for Worthing College running out as 42 – 13 winners in the Men’s Rugby Union Elite League playoff final at Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club on Wednesday 15th May.

meant for their wing, Llandrillo turned defence into attack by breaking out from within their own 22yd line where the winger sprinted home from half way to score his second try of the day and extend the lead to 22 – 3.

It was Worthing who had the first points on the board within 10 minutes converting a penalty to take 3 – 0 lead. However it wasn’t long until Llandrillo took control of the game scoring two unconverted tries in quick succession to take make it 10 – 3.

Worthing’s task was soon to become more difficult by having a player sin binned for a deliberate knock on, and indeed they were punished by Llandrillo who just before half time turned the ball over to score a try to make it 27 – 3 at half time.

Llandrillo extended their lead following a superb finish from their winger to score a try. Worthing continued to try to get back into the game, but were stung by an efficient Llandrillo who Intercepted a Worthing chip kick

Llandrillo then scored three tries within the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half leaving Worthing with a mountain to climb. However, they remained competitive and were rewarded for their efforts with an unconverted try from a catch and drive move off a line out with around 10 minutes remaining. Worthing were not done yet and following a Llandrillo high tackle and a sin binning, Worthing scored their second try of the game to make the final score 42 – 13. Liz Fletcher (Regional Sports Coordinator for the West Midlands) said,”It was a great game of rugby, competitive to the end and the players were a credit to their colleges and coaching staff. This was a great advert for college rugby’.

Narrow semi-final defeat leaves Men’s Football Performance Programme 1st XI heartbroken The Men’s Football Performance Programme 1st XI came home empty handed after a 1-0 defeat to Myerscough College (Preston) in the ECFA National Champions of Champions Semi Final at Lilleshall. Worthing started like a train and could have easily taken the lead on more than one occasion in the first twenty minutes when chances fell to Jared Rance, who was Worthing’s best player and Jack Barnes who expertly curled an effort from 40 yards out, only to see it come back off the

18

crossbar with the keeper well beaten. Myerscough are deemed to be the best College for Football in the country at the moment and this quality was in evidence when they took the lead when a slide rule pass evaded centre half Greg Gander and found a Myerscough striker who slotted past Worthing keeper James Binfield. This goal really opened up the game and made it an extremely entertaining affair with high quality of skill on show. Both sides had further chances and

Worthing felt they deserved a penalty when Smith was clearly tripped by his full back, but the official waved away any protests. Myerscough too could have had a penalty with Jacob Parazo lucky to get away with a handball appeal. Both sides attacked each other right through until the final whistle and unfortunately for Worthing it was their northern opponents who progressed to the final against Monkseaton School (Durham).

Because of the growing interest at the college for the girls game, Worthing were able to enter two teams. Worthing College ‘A’ made easy work qualifying for the knockout stages beating teams such as Angerming, Shoreham Academy and Itchen College. Worthing College ‘B’

had a harder route to the Quarter Finals losing to Birmingham College twice in the group stage but still winning their other games to progress to the knock-out stages. Worthing College ‘B’ lost out in the Quarter Finals losing narrowly to Angerming School in a Extra-Extra time thriller. However, Worthing College ‘A’ brushed past Christ Hospital ‘A’ before thumping Angerming 20-0 in the Semi Finals to set up a final against Birmingham College.

Women’s Rugby Coach said “The result today for both teams shows the strength and depth the College has in both the male and female game. With performances like this, plus the exciting news that the College has gained RFUW AASE accreditation means there are exciting times ahead for the Women’s rugby Academy at Worthing College”. The
