Michael praises Aspire programme as he wins coveted place at Oxford Michael Shelton has received an offer from Exeter College, Oxford to study Physics next autumn. Michael has participated in all aspects of the Aspire programme: from attending a sample lecture at Sussex university on Fuels in term 1 to participating in the Worthing College trip to the Oxbridge Epsom Downs Conference in term 2 and visiting the Oxford Open day with college in term 3. Through the Aspire programme he became aware of opportunities to develop his interest in Physics beyond the curriculum. During

the summer holidays he attended a Sutton Trust Summer school at

Imperial College on Physics and completed a Nuffield research placement on cardiac heart monitors. In Term 4 Michael attended the early applicants UCAS group and took advantage of specialist academic support to prepare for his PAT entrance test and of several practice interviews with Physics and Oxford specialist staff to enhance his interview technique. He said “ these practice interviews were almost exactly the same as the real things and definitely helped to prepare me”. We are ver y proud of Michael’s achievement and wish him well for the future.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award winner named as Public Services student of the year. Each year the Public Services teaching staff have recognised outstanding performance in the Public Services by selecting a Public Services Student of the Year. The award includes a certificate and £50. This has been made possible by Jon Lifford (former college tutor) who spent a lot of time working with the Public Services students and who felt their effort and application should be recognised through an award by donating £50 each year for a deserving recipient. This year the award has gone to James Toogood. James achieved a triple Distinction in his Public Services Extended Diploma, which exceeded his predicted grade. Whilst, completing his studies he embarked

6

on the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which he has now completed. James has maintained a positive Public Service ethos and is proud of his Public Service contribution as a Marines Cadet. He has effectively brought his Marines experiences into the classroom to support his studies and proudly read out the reading at the college Remembrance Day commemorations in November.. James has also supported the teaching team at Open Evenings and Duke of Edinburgh events. He is spending his summer in Greece, teaching sailing and windsurfing, whilst gaining qualifications in both. Then he returns to England to take up a place at university before ultimately starting his military career.

Winning Worthing College students star in High Stakes Quiz Show on Solent TV

Southampton Solent University recently welcomed teams of college students from all over the south onto the campus to compete for victory in the challenging and exciting televised inter-college quiz. Titled High Stakes, the show is a test of general knowledge that encourages quick thinking, strategy and risk-taking from any team hoping to take home the High Stakes trophy. Season two saw Bitterne Park Sixth Form, Highbury College, Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, St Vincent College, Totton College and Worthing College descend on the campus to take part in the three days of filming, fun and general knowledge.

knowledge and Andrew Jeffer y demonstrated quick thinking to triumph once again and go through to the semi finals in March. A team of five talented Worthing College students and an enthusiastic group of supporters returned to the impressive facilities in the TV centre at Solent University to take part in the final rounds. This time a full minibus of Media students went along to support and to see the fantastic control centre and range of TV and

sound stages. Once again the Worthing team impressed and won through to the final. There were tense moments when the buzzer was not working correctly and some scenes had to be reshot for technical reasons. However, Worthing College triumphed overall and the very fine trophy is now on display in Reception. Well done to all concerned. We are already looking for Trivia legends for next year’s team!

After beating their first opponents, mainly due to the lightening quick buzzer round from Stephen Brown they moved on to the quarter final where Team captain Jorge Latter stayed cool under pressure, Annis Ferry displayed a great general

Drama students purrfect with winning performance of CATS Worthing College drama students put on the style in a new version of CATS which turned the feline protagonists into models and the alleyway into the catwalk. The set design, costumes and projections helped to fashion a convincing setting for this popular musical with all the actors putting in

highly entertaining performances which retained the spirit of the original show whilst giving it an original new twist. The dance routines were all performed with the finesse we have come to expect from the Academy of Performing Arts perfectly suiting the new fashion show setting without

losing any of the feline grace one would hope for. With too many stand out performances to list the whole show was a triumph. One could say that it was the ‘cats’ whiskers’. Congratulations to all the cast, technical support and teaching staff that made it such a success.

The Work Store winners on parade

The Work Store Award Presentations This lovely event was attended by students, their families and friends, staff and governors. The Awards have been devised to recognise those students who are committed to undertaking additional activities alongside their studies to enhance their CVs, university applications or to simply participate for the benefit of others in the community.

Paul Riley presented awards to students for a range of placements including local schools and nurseries, Worthing Hospital, Ferring Country Centre and also Worthing Museum. Students also gained awards for their work in college as Student Ambassadors, in Student Parliament and for activities such as filming and photographing events and producing the College Student

Magazine ‘ECHO’. All students are eligible to participate in the awards and can gain a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum award depending on length of service and feedback from the organisations that they work with. Congratulations to everyone involved and we expect next year’s event will be even bigger and better.

High flying students attend Oxford Student Conference at Epsom Downs These 15 high flying Y12 students attended the Oxbridge Student Conference at Epsom Downs on the last day of the spring term 27th March. Several of them found out about different degree subjects like Medicine, Law and English, others looked at unusual courses such as Land Economy, Classics or Philosophy, Politics and Economics. They all gleaned the necessary information about the competitive application processes for Oxford and Cambridge and the subtle differences between them. Hopefully some of them will be following in Michael’s Shelton’s footsteps (pg 6).

Worthing College students Nursery says argue their case at Debating it with flowers Matters regional final Daniel Porter and Spencer Kay had a harder job arguing against “The UK should liberalise its drug laws”. The whole audience was in favour of the motion at the start and it was an uphill struggle!

Having won through to the regional finals in December, St. Mar y ’s Twickenham, provided a spectacular venue for another nerve racking day of very competitive debating. A team of six students prepared for three debates against students from five other sixth forms. We were the only FE college and the only state school. Nevertheless our students made detailed and passionate speeches in their debates. “Art should never be censored” was argued by Jon Deedman and Dmitri Somerville, with references to Shostakovitch and Holman Hunt as well as Blurred lines and Wrecking Ball.

Unfortunately we did not progress to the final round so Hannah Dickinson and Andrew Jeffery were unable to demonstrate their talents in the most keenly argued debate of the day “The UK should make voting compulsory”. This topical issue really got the whole crowd involved and all of our students continued to ask probing questions throughout the day. Well done to everyone for their careful preparation and excellent responses when under pressure. Next year we aim to get through to the next round so keen debaters will be wanted for the Debating Society starting in September.

Thank you to Ferring Nurseries, Littlehampton Road, Worthing for kindly donating lots of summer bedding plants to brighten up the plant pots on our terraces which were potted by Glenn our green-fingered caretaker.

Students go to work on an egg

On 19th March two teams of three students represented Worthing College in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s 2015 Sussex Great Electric Egg Race at Brighton University. They had 1 hour and 30 minutes to build a catapult to throw an egg as far as possible. In addition to the distance travelled by the egg, Judging was based on teamwork, creativity and artistic licence. We were delighted that, whilst many of the 20 teams failed to automatically launch their eggs, both of our teams made launchers

that automatically catapulted the eggs 3-4m. One team was awarded 3rd place by the judges having achieved a particularly high score for teamwork and the other team came a very creditable 6th.

The teams taking part were Kyle Grigg, James Pearce & Max Brown who took 3rd place, and Max O’Keeffe, Adrian Bennett & George McClean in 6th place. Congratulations to both teams who did the College proud.

Sussex University Young Analyst Competition Hannah Dickinson, Annabel Pink and Jess Jackman won the college analysis competition which ran during open evening. They went through to the Sussex University Young Analyst Competition and took on teams from other schools and colleges from

East and West Sussex and Brighton and Hove. They did well on the titrations and enjoyed the challenge of identifying unknown ions. It was probably fortunate they did not win as they would have had to travel to Aberdeen for the UK final!

Internatonal students win our hearts and serve up a real taste of their cultures R The Worthing College International Day was an great opportunity for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students to represent their own countries. They put in a huge amount of hard work and put on a fantastic show. Countries on display were Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, China, Eritrea, India, Iran, Latvia, Lithuania, Pakistan, Poland and Turkey. The students brought in food from their countries for people to taste and several donned national costumes. Romal Karukhail and Atiquallah Rishtyanai stood out proudly showing off their spectacular Afghani traditional dress.

There was also a backgammon competition between the UK and Iran. Backgammon, one of the oldest board games in the world, is said to have originated in Iran around 3000 BC. The UK team won by 2 games to 1. The highlight of the day was Aarti Naresh’s skilful Henna tattoos, which at one point had a large queue of people wanting to be “hennered.” The students spent 5 weeks preparing their displays. What came across was how much of the world there is left to explore, how very proud they are of their countries and how excited they were to share their backgrounds with other people. Congratulations to all who participated and helped.

Lion Dance welcomes in New Year This year Chinese New Year fell in the Spring Half Term holiday, so students and staff joined in with the celebrations on the Friday before half term started. The main attraction was an authentic Chinese Lion Dance

performed by media teacher Jason Lee, and members of the White Crane Martial Arts group from Brighton. After the main performance, a shorter dance was done for children from the college nursery. IELTS students

from China also exhibited information about Chinese New Year customs, complete with fortune cookies and information on the characteristics of different astrological animals. Thanks to everyone involved.

Travel and Tourism students enjoy learning the ropes down on the farm As part of their A2 Travel and Tourism course students are required to organise an event for others. One of the groups arranged a day trip to Blacklands Farm for the Level 2 Diploma Travel and Tourism students. The students were responsible for arranging all aspects of the trip which will support them in their progression plans for after college which includes Events Management at University, working in a Travel Agency and working as an Overseas Representative in Italy. Students took part in a range of activities including teambuilding, high ropes, low ropes and a pretty scary zip wire. The day helped the Level 2 Travel and Tourism students to complete their Activity Tourism unit and a fun day was had by all.

Men’s Rugby winners at the double

The Men’s Rugby programme ended the season in a real blaze of glory with both the 1st team squad and the 2nd team squad coming up trumps to bring home trophies. The 1st team (Raiders Academy) travelled to Smethick near Birmingham to win the National AOC Rugby Plate by beating East Durham College 35 - 5.

Worthing College Raiders (above) put East Durham to the sword with an outstanding performance while the 2nd XV celebrated their victory against BHASVIC (below).

Having been under the cosh in the first half, Raiders managed to get to half time only 5-0 behind. What followed was almost the stuff of legend as Worthing scored 5 unanswered tries from Fowler, Hassan, Tessier, Gibson and Forster, all of which were converted by Gibson. This was followed barely a week later by an equally heroic victory for the 2nd team squad in the Sussex League Play off Final against BHASVIC. This was the result of an incredible turn around during the season which saw

16

vast improvements throughout the squad. Earlier in the season Worthing had lost their opening game 79-0 and had lost 36-12 to BHASIV in December. However a brave, gritty performance

saw them overcome their underdog status and beat their rivals with a Tomlinson try which was converted by Collier to start wild celebrations. Congratulations to both squads on a brilliant, breathtaking season finale.

Women’s Rugby AOC South Region Cup Winners Wednesday 18th March saw the AASE Women’s team compete in the Association of College’s South Regional Qualifier against Colchester, Brockenhurst AASE, and Bicton AASE. First game of the day saw Worthing College win 37-0 against a travelling Colchester. The game started with a bang with a try in the first few seconds from Alice Hagan after a good turnover from Ashleigh Smith. A second try for Alice was followed by two for Caroline Hodgson and another from Chanel Jackmanhills which saw some neat handling from the team to score under the posts. The second match saw the two South Coast AASE rivals go head to head for bragging rights for the South East. Worthing started with some strong and crunching tackles which set the tone for the match. Worthing were then able to gain possession which led to a brace of tries from Caroline and

a 14-0 lead at half time. The 2nd half was less entertaining, however Alice and Maddy Burnage put in some great solo runs to make the final score 24-5. The last game saw Worthing go up against fellow AASE centre Bicton College, the first of the season between the two teams. Both teams before this game were undefeated in the

mini tournament, which meant we were in for a great game, and both teams did not disappoint with Worthing triumphing in the end 27-7 with tries from Caroline, Maddy and Alice who scored twice. The results from today, mean that Worthing College have qualified to defend their AoC National Cup at the home of Saracens Rugby Club, Allianz Park.

2nd XI wins League to cap successful season for Men’s Football Academy Worthing College Men’s Football Academy has a very positive season with many outstanding performances including a semi final appearance for the 2nd XI and a narrow defeat for the U18 squad in the quarter finals of the ESFA National Cup. Pride of place goes to the 2nd XI for clinching their third BCS SE League title in succession. Congratulations to all the players and we are all looking forward to another season at National level.

Women’s Football excels to win Hampshire Cup and Sussex Cup Worthing College Women’s football squad pulled off an amazing double by winning both the Hampshire Cup and the Sussex U19 Cup in April and May. In the Hampshire final between Worthing College v Itchen College, Southampton University Worthing got off to a great start and were 1-0 after just 10 minutes with a goal from Hayley Bridge, after a great assist from Chloe Lelliot. Itchen worked hard to get back into the game putting on the pressure and causing problems and with 5 minutes to go before half time they broke through to make it 1-1. The 2nd half was end to end stuff and Itchen were finding it hard to break down Worthing’s defensive shape. Both teams were working hard but with 10 minutes to go Hayley Bridge received the ball on the left wing and drove forward. After beating a player she crossed for Caz Hodgson to finish brilliantly and win the hard fought final 2-1. Victory for the Worthing College team earned them their first major Cup win of the season. Coach James Marrs was delighted with the team’s performance which was a real boost before the Sussex Cup final on Wed 6th May v BHASVIC. In the Sussex U19 final BHASVIC were behind after only 2 minutes when Jodie Pallantt chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

18

Worthing then took control of the game and further goals followed from Caz Hodgson, Brooke Pallant and two from Hayley Bridge to give Worthing a 5-0 half-time lead. BHASVIC started the second half in much brighter fashion and managed to have more possession, creating one or two half chances without ever really troubling Molly Towers in the Worthing goal. Worthing then settled down and got back to their passing game which enabled them to exert more pressure and they scored midway through the second half as

a great run and cross from Caz found Emily Baker in the middle where she calmly made it 6-0. Worthing carried on creating more and more chances throughout the second half but just couldn’t find the net until Caz scored her second and Worthing’s seventh to kill the game off as a contest once and for all. Worthing dominated from start to finish and throughly deserved to be crowned County Cup champions and scooping the double after winning the Hampshire cup two weeks previously.

Netball Academy follows Hampshire League win with double tournament success Worthing College’s ‘Team of the Year’ finished the season three time winners when they capped their season by taking the Hampshire League title and won two tournaments.

an early 5 goal lead. A delay then caused a lack of concentration and allowed Brockenhurst back into the game. The final 6 mins went goal for goal with Worthing winning 19-18.

Following on from the success of the Hampshire Versatility Tournament the Netball Academy were in high spirits when they travelled to Brockenhurst College for the annual Hampshire Invitation Tournament.

In the third game Worthing 2 took on QMC college, and after another good start they scored freely and ran out easy winners 11-2.

The opening game, Worthing 2 v Itchen 2 turned out to be a tense affair with numerous missed opportunities to build a really convincing lead. However Worthing eventually sorted themselves out to run out winners 4-3. The second Game saw Worthing 1 playing Brockenhurst – the only team in Hampshire to beat us this year. Worthing got off to a good start playing good netball and taking

Worthing 1 then beat Peter Symonds 23-22 in a really close encounter. This was literally a match that went goal for goal the whole game with Worthing winning by just a single point. Worthing 2 v HCS – Probably the girls best game of the day, HCS had won both their previous games, one of them against Peter Symonds, the netball flowed but the goals failed to go in but the defense remained strong and Worthing ran out good winners 5-3.

Worthing 1 took on Itchen College in a game they couldn’t afford to lose as it would leave three teams on one loss. With all to play for Worthing took a one goal lead early on but failed to capitalise on numerous chances to increase that lead. In the second half Itchen came back time and time again before Worthing once again won by a single point 21-20. In the next game Worthing 2 played Peter Symonds and for some reason fell to bits early on going 7-0 down. Despite encouragement from the 1st team, the score got worse and worse finishing 23-3. Following their defeat by Symonds Worthing 2 went into their final game against Brockenhurst 2 knowing they couldn’t win the tournament. However they put in a good performance and made it a very competitive affair which we eventually lost 5-3. Worthing 1 V QMC was never going to be a competitive game as QMC had been the whipping girls of the group. Worthing played well and remained focused to complete the job with a 23-3 win and for the second week running come away from Hampshire with the winners’ trophy.

Marathon man Why 26.2? Because 26.3 would be madness! Although beaten by a Womble in the final 100m this was a very special day and one that will live long in the memory. A freezing start was quickly forgotten with the crescendo of the crowd, the noise of the many bands and the man running with the karaoke machine. Having met Sue at mile 3 when the different starts meet, we proceeded with a very steady pace, gradually picking off Rhinos and enjoying one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

anniversary of the London Marathon, we crossed the line in 4 hrs 59 mins and shared an emotional hug (and to be honest, a tear). Running a marathon is a special achievement, that I am very proud of and running it with my wife was incredible. A huge thank you from both of us for all your support and donations for MS-UK. We have currently raised £1,900 and with other fundraising activities should reach our target of £2000. Now we can look forward to a good rest but I can’t stop thinking of the next challenge – London Marathon 2016 ballot opens soon.

Dodging the 100s of water bottles and coping with the glue like tarmac from Lucozade drinks and gels we hit half way in good shape and kept going. Weaving in and out of walkers, past the Wolverhampton Bobsleigh Team, we headed towards our target time and at mile 19 were on the telly. See the BBC highlights show if you want to see us (twice). Past MSUK cheering points we plodded on. The rain stayed away but not the crowds who spurred us on to the end. Finishing hand in hand, in the spirit of celebrating the 35th
