usic, some claim they can’t live without it, others claim they hate it. Whichever side of the spectrum you are, you listen to music on a regular basis: music on TV shows and films; the radio in the car or whilst at work. Modern music is changing, it’s either about blaming it on me (George Ezra- Blame it on me- see what I did there?) or, it’s all about that bass (of course by Megan Trainorand again?). Now some people wish we could go back to the ‘good old days’ of music - personally, I like both modern and older music (depending on the song). But seeing as it is March 2015, I am going to review some of the songs that have made their way into the top five of the UK Top 40 Singles as of March 1st, I would look at later charts but unfortunately I can’t see into the future... or can I? That is a question for another time, for now let’s get on with looking at some modern tunes.

1

NUMBER ONE: Ellie Goulding - Love Me like You Do Ellie Goulding’s new song is of course part of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, recently hitting our cinemas. It is a simple song with a simple melody, soft on the ears and apparently accompanies the film well. But being more of an action/comedy kind of girl, I wouldn’t know. The song itself is good, well it has to be or it wouldn’t make the charts, let alone number one would it now? Anyway, like I was saying, it’s a good song but I think the only thing that made it a number one hit was its presence in the film. I think that without the film, the song would have a hard time reaching the top five, as good as it is.

2

NUMBER TWO:

Hozier - Take Me to Church

3

No matter how hard you try, it is difficult to not sing along to this catchy tune, Admit it, even if you’re singing the lyrics under your breath, you are still singing along, and if you’re like me, you’re probably humming the tune as you read this. The catchy tune paired with Bruno Mars singing abilities bring the song to life, making it a perfect party tune. You might be getting annoyed with this song, after all, it has been in the top of the chart for twelve weeks and counting but in years to come, you’ll hear it somewhere and reminisce on what a great tune it was and then you will forget how annoying it became. Trust me, I can see into the future.

NUMBER FOUR:

I really like this song. It has definitely earned its spot in the top five. The lyrics are easy to follow accompanied by a tune that isn’t too catchy yet somehow sticks with you, you could say it is a perfect song. If you didn’t watch the Grammys you missed out on a great live performance of this song and I recommend you check it out on YouTube. I would definitely say that if Hozier releases more singles like this then he could be extremely successful, let’s just hope that he doesn’t let the fame get to his head like other artists have, mentioning no names *cough* Justin Bieber *cough*. Sorry about that, I nearly choked on my sour skittles, they are more sour than you think.

4

NUMBER THREE: Mark Ronson Ft Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk

The Weekend - Earned It Another song from 50 Shades of Grey that has graced the UK charts with its presence. Now before deciding on doing this article, I had never heard this song before and after listening to it, I wish it was still the same way now. This is one song that I do not like, plain and simple. Each individual lyric is made to sound twice as long as it would usually sound, now this is okay if it is the occasional lyric but it is too much to handle for the duration of the whole song. Some people may disagree and think it is a beautiful song but I don’t and I believe that it shouldn’t be in the chart at all, let alone the top five. But that just goes to show how influential movies and the media can be…… now remember to support the Capitol and not the Rebels. Hang on, this isn’t Panem, as you were.

NUMBER FIVE:

Kayne West, Rihanna and Paul McCartney - FourFiveSeconds Let’s put it this way, this is one interesting song. The mix of artists that have collaborated on this song is a bit of a strange mix if you ask me. I would have perhaps expected a collaboration between Kayne and Rihanna but not with Paul McCartney. This doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with this song though, not at

all, I think it is actually quite a good song. The acoustic guitar and backing lyrics provided by McCartney add a nice tone to the song, making it slightly more bearable if you are not a fan of Kanye or Rihanna. Either way, I do think this is a song deserving of its top spot.

Honourable Mentions

So these are the top five songs of this week (at the time of writing), now I have two honourable mentions for you, one song I hate more than spiders (and I really hate spiders) and one song that I love just as much as caramel chocolate (speaking of, I must go and buy some when I am done with this).

Megan Trainor - Lips Are Movin’ As if the first song wasn’t bad enough, we now have a second which will more than likely turn our brains to mush with its repetitive lyrics and catchy tune. What annoys me the most about this song is the fact that she advertises her previous single ‘All About That Bass’ several times. There is nothing wrong with a bit of self-advertising of your album within your singles, but your other singles? No. I don’t think so, I just don’t see the point, it was a big enough hit as it is, no need to make it bigger, seriously, there is no need. Although, with the catchy lyrics and tune, you just can’t deny-ny-ny (I’m sorry it had to be done) that this is another sure-fire success for Megan Trainor.

By Sophie Holmes

Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud This is a beautiful song which is accompanied by a beautiful video and I would be one-hundred percent happy if it remained in the charts for the remainder of 2015, I really would. The lyrics are just beautiful and could literally melt a girl’s heart. The tune accompanies the lyrics well and is perfect to hum along to, you just can’t

not sing along to a beautiful song. The video is amazing, simplistic to match the song. Nothing jumps out of the screen, no expletives damage your ears and perhaps most importantly it’s by Ed Sheeran, Britain’s favourite busker-turned mega-superstar. What’s not to love?

Leonardo Da Vinci - “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Gone Girl Review T

he film Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher, is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. The sudden disappearance of seemingly perfect Amy Elliott-Dunne (Rosamund Pike) and star of the ‘Amazing Amy’ book series, on the fifth anniversary of her wedding, presents a dark, mesmerising and shocking plot that’s sure to engross watchers in the first ten minutes. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a writer, bar owner and husband to Amy, comes home on the morning of their wedding anniversary to find his wife gone, the living room trashed and traces of blood. Police are called, suspicions are raised and he is the prime suspect. All pieces of evidence point to him being guilty, but was it actually him? Through the anniversary present, clues left by his missing wife, diary entries, stories of stalkers and flashback scenes, the pieces of the puzzle slowly start to fit together - only after encountering twists, turns and confusion in the process. The film focuses on the extensive and wide spread media coverage of the event and the public scrutiny Nick faces as a suspect. Affleck and Pike are perfectly cast as the problematic, manipulative couple that is Nick and Amy. With performances that leave you loving them one minute and hating them the next, you are always left wondering who is to blame and who can you trust, if anyone. The flashback scenes of their early years create an illusion of a perfect relationship between two perfect people, when in reality they are the complete opposite.

Nick is presented as the typical American guy; handsome and charming with good intentions. A guy you can trust. Wrong. From poor missing Amy’s years of diary entries, we learn that he is abusive, dangerous and a cheater. Similarly Amy is the ideal woman; pretty, smart and funny, with the added bonus of a huge trust fund. Poor, innocent and vulnerable Amy, impossible not to like and impossible not to feel sympathy for. Or so she wants you to think. One of the most intriguing things about Gone Girl is that you never know who to trust. Pike’s Amy is so captivating and manipulative that she has you believing everything she says. Is she a psychopath? Possibly. Is she a genius? Certainly. As the plot thickens, good guy Nick proves himself to be not quite so good. Abusive and dangerous; no, but he is a cheater. With feelings that his marriage is half over with Amy, he begins an affair with a student of his, giving way to another side of Nick for the audience to see and also a motive for wanting to ‘get rid’ of his wife. Yet, despite this, it is quite easy to feel sympathy for him. It soon becomes clear that he is being played, erasing all suspicions of who’s guilty that you might have had earlier. Fincher, known for directing The Social Network and Fight Club, with the help of screenwriter and author of Gone Girl Gillian Flynn, creates murderous suspense through audience-baiting and “he said” “she said” portrayal of events. The film does an excellent job of trapping you in the strange world of Amy and Nick Dunne and evoking thoughts long after the film is over.

Hottest Games!

Professor Layton Series For those who enjoy brain twisting puzzles, with a gripping storyline. The Professor Layton series is a collection of 7 DS and 3DS games, which have amazing graphics and videos that set up the storyline perfectly. With each new game appearing better than the last! The way the storyline continues on from each game to the next creating one big adventure that the gamer is involved in. Not only this, but there is also a film within the series: Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, which in itself is just as enjoyable and adventurous as the games. What is interesting is the way they brought out the first 3 games of the series; Curious Village, Pandora’s Box and Lost Future, which ended the series (quite sadly!) but then brought out 4 more games that are set before Curious Village, clearly it has been growing in popularity that the creators wanted to create more excitement for the gamers. With over 130 puzzles in every game, as well as mini side activities it’s enough to keep anyone’s brain working throughout the story. It’s like a detective story, only better!

Fifa 15 The latest Fifa game, although mostly the same as it has previously been before, is known as the best football simulation game - just like watching a real football game on TV. In fact, Fifa 15 allows you to play the same matches you have seen on TV, along with using the pro players or creating your own character. This means you can play as all the best players. The graphic improvements have made the goalkeepers more lifelike in that now there are over 600 possible emotional reactions, as well as the common agressive actions by players like pushing and shoving. The main aim of Fifa is to replicate the best parts of a football game on TV, not to make the player feel like a football manager, which isn’t exciting enough. Thus, the new feature of the Ultimate Team is that you can loan players for a limited number of matches, as well as The Concept squad where users can create a dream squad of all the best players; new legends have been added including Franz Beckenbauer and Roberto Carlos. Online playing and video sharing makes the game much more enjoyable when you can play against your friends.

Pokémon Series Exactly like the TV series in every single way! Starting off with the basic 3 Pokémon; water, fire and grass, with varying types of Pokémon in each game, you are able to face wild Pokémon and trainers to level up your own; you can have a maximum of 6 Pokémon at one point. Items are very important in these games such as: potions, revives, status healers and TM/HM (technical machine), as you will need them to progress through the game. You will face 8 gym leaders in every game, each having a specific type of Pokémon, also facing Team Rocket or the Villains that feature in the game. Playing 1 game can take up to 30 or 50 minutes, even with the guides to help you. The guides tell you what moves the Pokémon learn, where they are found and what they evolve into. Once you have collected all 8 badges and defeated the elite 4 and the champion, you have completed the official game. However, there is also a post-story to collect Pokémon from different regions and catch the famous legendary Pokémon! These games are adapted from the TV series there are 20 overall, although there are other series of games that are different to the TV series with different game play. This game is loved worldwide!

Grand Theft Auto This game’s missions has heists, killing, driving, racing, shootouts and a variety of side quests which keep you busy for hours! The vehicles you can get include: planes, tanks, bikes, cars and helicopters that you can actually steal and drive around like a maniac. Then there are the weapons: pistols, rifles, shotguns, bazookas and grenades that add to a heightened exciting experience. You still have to be wary of the cops though - if you cause too much disruption, they will arrest you; in special cases the Army may become involved! The open world has missions, but it also has the ability to allow you to do what you like in between these missions. *This game is 18+ so be warned there are scenes, locations and missions that can be too graphic for younger audience.

Call of Duty In the past games, the plot was set around WW2 and you would play as the Allies: America, Russia and Britain against the Germans, Italians and Japanese. The Modern games now are all about the Americans Vs. the Russians or terrorists. The missions involve gathering Intel or killing, and there are different types of playing, like Co-op where you can play with your friends, or Multiplayer for playing with or against anyone worldwide! The most recent game - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, being set in the future, has futuristic weapons and armour. The storyline of Advanced Warfare is against terrorists planning a bio weapon of mass destruction; a gripping plot, where Irons tries to take over the world with his own private corporate Army.

John Lennon - “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making plans.”

Is money dictating our generations’ futures? By Laura Cooper

I

f you asked any seventeen or eighteen year old what they aspired to be in the future, what their hopes and dreams were, I am around 94% certain they would tell you that they want to be rich. They want to have an LA mansion, a penthouse in Chelsea with fast cars, designer clothes and spend countless days on the beach in Dubai. But what’s the cost? Since the take-off of social media sites such as Twitter and Instagram in particular, our generation is being constantly bombarded with images of wealthy celebrities being primped and preened by their professional makeup artists, sprawled across their Range Rovers and enjoying the life of luxury. Yes this may seem like a lovely way to spend your life, but these people don’t live in the real world like we do. Teenagers see young celebrities who were born into money, having no worries about whether they’ll be able to afford a nice house when they’re older, or to go on holiday. Instead 17 year olds like Kylie Jenner are buying $2.7million mansions while we debate whether we have enough money to go to Starbucks. These one in a million people aren’t the norm, however every teenager aspires to have this

12

unrealistic life and is beginning to believe that it is entirely normal. This is where we have a problem. To young children, money isn’t an object and these materials mean nothing. Instead they base their job aspiration on what they want to do in their heart. A hairdresser or nurse; a zookeeper or a police officer. As these children grow up, their ideals of role models mean that even if these aspirations are still present, it is tossed aside as it ‘won’t make me rich’. Instead they morph into ‘as long as it gets me money’ and ‘lets look at the annual salary to decide’. This is the sad reality of our generation, and I must admit that I too fall under this category, but a change is needed. People are not doing the things they love in life and are instead choosing pathways based on the income they will receive, believing this will make them happy. However, spending days on end in a job that makes you unhappy because you will be able to afford the same MAC makeup or designer sunglasses as the average sounding singer who just posted a photoshopped picture online, is not worth it. Your whole life should not be dictated by the doings of celebrities who have never known any different. It should be dictated by your own dreams, the things that make you genuinely happy. Materials are not necessities of life. The love of every part of your day, from work to home is a necessity of life.

So you’ve done the quiz and calculated your score and I’m betting that you want to know what your score means? Well, wonder no more! Just read the box that corresponds with your score and there’s your answer!

I scored 1-6 Points

People tend to think you’re the quiet one, am I right? You quietly go about life, rarely making a fuss about things and try hard to be a people pleaser. This is the typical answer you may get from a typical personality quiz but this is no typical quiz! So what if you’re not the life of the party? You’re you and that is all that matters. As long as you’re happy, nothing else should matter. Nothing can predict your personality, especially not a personality quiz, especially one that forces you to pick an answer, even if one doesn’t apply to you. Don’t let anyone put you down for being who you are, you are perfect the way you are. Now some people say, if you’re doing the opposite of what society wants and being yourself, you’re doing the right thing. So please, carry on being yourself. You rock!

I scored 7-12 Points Not quite the quiet one but not the life of the party either. Most of the time you don’t mind going unnoticed but you do want attention sometimes, would I be right in saying this? You may be sitting there, nodding your head agreeing with me but I don’t agree with that analogy. I think it shouldn’t matter. Be loud, be quiet, be whoever you want to be! No one can tell you you’re wrong for being yourself, for being who you want to be. As hard as it may be, please try hard to not crumble to the pressures of society, you are a shining light and no one can stop you from being so. If someone doesn’t like your personality, it’s their problem, not yours. You should never change who you are simply because someone doesn’t like who you are. You are awesome!

I scored 13-18 Points

You can be loud and confident when you want to be but you can also be quiet and isolate yourself at times. Sometimes, you may even go as far as thinking that you should only be one of these things. Stop thinking this! You are fine just the way you are, there is nothing wrong with being loud and confident one day and then wanting to be alone the next day. Everyone feels like that in their life, it’s only right that you should too. Ignore the people who say otherwise, they are just following the rules of society, they are being who they are expected to be. You however, are breaking the mould which is absolutely awesome! I salute you brave soul! Just remember that no one is perfect so no one has the right to judge unless (by some strange miracle) they actually are perfect. You are an amazing person!

I scored 19-24 Points You are loud and confident. You love everyone and everyone loves you. And you love it, which is totally fine. What you don’t love is being the centre of attention all of the time, most of the time yes, but not all of it. But some people just don’t get this. Whether they like it or not, sometimes you just want to relax and watch someone else be the centre of attention for once. Which is completely fine. Everyone needs time alone, even you, you are human after all (unless you’re a cat and if you are, how you are reading this?) And it’s only natural for humans to want five minutes of peace and quiet. Don’t let society lull you into the false sense of security that attention is always good, it’s not, and you want privacy too. Regardless of all this, you are just as kind and compassionate as the quiet ones. You are just as important and just as awesome! Now, I’m going to take a wild guess and say that it wasn’t what you were expecting? Well, I’m sure that I warned you that this was no ordinary quiz. I didn’t? Well, you’ve been warned now! On a serious note, everything in the above boxes is true. No matter what your personality is, it’s perfectly fine just the way it is. You don’t need to change because someone else is unhappy with you, you should only change if you are unhappy with yourself even then ask yourself if you really want to change. Just please remember that you, yes you, are awesome and no one can stop you from being awesome!!
