First generation Programme Guide

first generation What’s This Programme About? First Generation is a support programme for students who might be considering university in the future. The scheme is run by Worthing College together with our partner universities. Joining the scheme entitles students applying to university to extra support including trips, guaranteed offers, interviews and financial support.


Who Is Eligible To Join? The programme is aimed at students who come from a background that does not traditionally have high rates of progression to university. For example:

Neither parent has attended university in the UK or abroad. They are a young carer or have been a looked after young person. They have a disability or specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia. They live in a ‘Low Participation’ neighbourhood as defined by postcode.

> Brighton > Bristol UWV > Chichester > Plymouth > Portsmouth

> Southampton Solent > Surrey > Sussex > The University of Law > Winchester



benefits of the programme Guaranteed Offers

> The local universities we’ve partnered with provide

students with guaranteed offers in the majority of courses if they meet the course entry requirements.

Bursaries

> Universities will provide substantial bursaries to some

students, subject to meeting certain requirements. For example, students with low family incomes can receive annual bursaries up to ÂŁ1000 a year.

> There are also opportunities for students to take

up employment with the universities alongside their studies, such as working as a student ambassador.

Enrichment Opportunities

> Campus tours > Taster days at local universities in a wide range of subjects.

> Workshops, lectures and masterclasses. University

staff frequently visit the college to deliver lectures and presentations to specific subject areas.


> Summer Schools. These are fantastic opportunities to

spend a week at university over the summer holiday, living in halls, studying a particular subject, meeting new friends and experiencing the reality of university life.

> Support with the university application process. Highlights From Last Year Here are just a few of the events which First Generation students took part during the last academic year:

> Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Forensics and Maths taster days.

> Sports Business masterclass at Brighton University. > Learn to Teach masterclass at Brighton University. > Summer Schools at the universities of Brighton, Sussex and Plymouth.

> University for Young Carers and Care Leavers residential in Winchester.
