BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate

The course involves a lot of research, completing tasks based on a variety of scientific ideas and exams. Much of the work is covered during practical investigations and you will learn about laboratory safety and good practice.

What is this course about? This course is made up of two Level 2 Awards. Each Award is equivalent to one GCSE and is made up of four Mandatory units. These mandatory units cover aspects of biology, chemistry and physics, and focus on how our knowledge of these sciences is used in everyday life. The four units in Principles of Applied Science cover core concepts to develop your knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics topics.

How will my work be assessed? In Principles of Applied Science, 1 unit will be externally assessed through a written exam and 3 units will be internally assessed by completing and submitting assignments. The points gained across the 4 units will be combined so you achieve one overall grade.

The four units in the Application of Applied Science look at how scientific knowledge is applied and is more practical in nature.

What topics will I study? This course investigates biology, chemistry and physics topics. As

The more you can remember from your Key Stage 3 and GCSE Science the better, but the course covers all the main ideas you need again. General knowledge about science and how it impacts on our life is useful, and an interest in new scientific discoveries. An ability to meet deadlines and organise yourself. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Good time management, good practical skills, independent research skills, good ICT skills and good team working skills. Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 3, including Science grade 3 or Mathematics grade 3. What are the lessons like? This is a very practical course; the

main aim is for you to develop your techniques and understanding of the range of skills needed by a science technician in the workplace. This means that much of the learning will be through practical projects, independent research, and presentations. You will also have plenty of practice to prepare for exams. What do people do with an Applied Science BTEC Level 2? This course prepares you for employment, possibly in an area that uses science, and gives you a good grounding to go on to Level 3 courses at Worthing College such as the CAMTEC Level 3 in Applied Science Extended Certificate or other L3 courses. It is not a suitable route to science A Levels.


Art and Design

BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate

Students will learn a broad range of visual arts skills and prepare a portfolio for progression. The units to be studied on this course are: • Unit 1: Introduction to Specialist Pathways in Art and Design. • Unit 2: Creative Project in Art and Design. • Unit 6: Investigating Contextual References in Art and Design. • Unit 7: Recording for Creative Intentions in art and Design. • Unit 11: Working to Graphic design briefs. • Unit 12: Working to Textile briefs. • Unit 13: Exploring ideas to develop and produce Art and Design outcomes. • Unit 14: Working to Photography briefs.

What is this course about? This course provides a broad based experience of the specialist areas within art and design. It is suitable for students who are seeking to progress into employment or onto further study at a higher level. The course is equivalent to 3 GCSEs. This course involves students learning to create 2D and 3D artworks. Course activities include drawing and learning from other artists and designers. Specialist techniques studied will include textiles, photography, mixed media and graphic communication. In addition, students investigate employment opportunities in art and design and complete a week of relevant work experience. What topics will I study? The course is made up of 8 mandatory units focusing on how

All course tasks are designed from a vocational brief giving student’s experience of working as a creative practitioner. Employability Students on this course also participate in a week’s work experience. How will my work be assessed? There are 6 units that are assessed by coursework. Units are internally marked by your teacher and externally verified. Two of the units will involve an externally set exam which students will need to complete under exam conditions. The unit grades are added together to give you your final results: Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Exceptionally talented students are awarded a Distinction*. Can I do other courses alongside this course? This is a full time course although you must take GCSE in Maths and/ or English alongside if you have not yet achieved an 9-4 or A*-C grade in either of these subjects. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? An interest in Art and Design. Creativity. An ability to meet deadlines and organise yourself.

What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to develop good practical skills. You will need to develop research skills and learn how to document and explain your progress in a sketchbook. You will learn IT skills particularly the use of Photoshop and Power Point. You will need to understand how artists and designers work in the creative industries. You will need to become more independent and self-motivated in the way you work. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 3 and an interest in Art and Design. What are the lessons like? Most lessons are practical and involve introducing and using the new skills. There will be practical demonstrations and workshops, sessions on how to research and gather visual sources and how to document in sketchbooks. Language and written skills are developed. There will also be visits to see the work of other artists and designers,


to draw and take photographs, and to understand their working practice. 1:1 support is available to all students. Mandatory Unit: Principles of Marketing - Marketing is key in the business world. In this unit students will learn what effective marketing is and the strategies that businesses use to work out their target market and then market effectively.

What is this course about? This qualification has been developed to inspire students to learn about business and develop the skills that employers are looking for from the best applicants. There are a number of units which prepare students for a career in a range of business sectors, including retail. What topics will I study? The course is made up of: Core units: 1. Enterprise in the Business World - Using examples from local, national and international business students will learn what makes an enterprise successful, and create a business model for a business start-up. 2. Finance for Business - In this unit students will learn about profit and loss and the tools of the

Optional Units from: 9. Promoting a Brand - Students will explore the use of branding and how it is incorporated into the different methods of promotion, concluding with the planning of a promotional campaign for a brand aimed at a target market. 4. Principles of Customer Service – Customer service is investigated in a couple of businesses and students will develop customer service skills to deal with different types of customers. 6. Introducing Retail Business – Students will learn about retail outlets in the local area and selling internationally. This will include the roles of staff and the challenges that the businesses face. 8. Recruitment, Selection and


Employment – Students will learn about the recruitment process for specific posts, develop interview skills and put together a realistic personal career development plan. 10. Using Business Documentation – Students will learn about different forms of communication and documentation used in business environments, both internally and externally. Opportunities to develop communication skills are a key part of this unit. Students on this course also participate in work experience. How will my work be assessed? Students will need to: • Develop good independent study skills. • Learn to self-assess their own work and with the teachers help maximise grades. • Develop numeracy and literacy skills. • Develop research skills and present work in a variety of ways. • Embrace challenges and gain leadership skills. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 3. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles are used during the course. Lessons include discussions, group work, role play, case studies, task- based learning, use of IT and DVDs. 1:1 support is available to all students.


What do people do with a Business Level 2 BTEC? Further study e.g. progress to the CAMTEC Level 3 in Business if you achieve a Merit grade and above on Level 2. An apprenticeship in business, retail or customer service. Full time work in a local business.


English GCSE

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For one year. What is this course about? This course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the English language. If English is your first language this is probably the most important basic qualification to have to enhance your employability and to support further study in a large range of subjects. This course is specifically designed for people needing to achieve a grade 4 in GCSE English. If you have not yet achieved a grade 3 in the subject previously, you will have the opportunity to be placed in a learning environment which introduces you to the key skills needed in the exams. You will then have the opportunity to develop these skills over a longer period of time. If English is not your first language you should consider our courses in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or in IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems).

What topics will I study? You will develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. You will study a range of different fiction and non-fiction texts from different time periods. You will develop your skills in writing for different purposes and audiences. How will my work be assessed? You will be assessed by two exams at the end of the year. You may complete one speaking and listening assessment depending on your prior achievement. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? Ability to draw on your English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening – from GCSE English at school or equivalent. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to build on and develop your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 3.


What are the lessons like? Lessons include group work and individual work, as well as class discussions. What do students say about this course? “I’m just pleased to have had the chance to retake GCSE English. I realise now it is the most important qualification …I will not miss my big chance this time.” “…and the course was fast-paced compared to school because it was all in one year.” “The teachers are really supportive and make you feel that you can succeed.” What have I got to do in order to do well? Make sure you attend each lesson and keep up to date with class and homework. Participate in lessons in order to get the most out of them and act on feedback from your teacher. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? If English is not your first language you should normally study our courses in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems).

Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? You would normally combine GCSE English with a Level 2 BTEC or Level 3 courses depending on your existing qualifications. What do people do with English GCSE? All university courses, many college courses, as well as many employers, require you to have a minimum standard (often grade 4) in GCSE English.


Mathematics GCSE

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? One year, unless you achieve at least a grade 4 in the early resit exam in November 2020 (the results of which come out in January 2021). You will have an early assessment to determine whether you will have the opportunity to sit the GCSE Mathematics exam early. What is this course about? This course is compulsory for students who have achieved a grade 3 in the new GCSE Mathematics (or grade D in the previous GCSE Mathematics exam). It may also be advisable for students who achieve a grade 4 in June 2019 to try to improve to a grade 5.

How will my work be assessed? There are three exams in May and June 2020. All three exams cover all of the course content (one exam is non-calculator). What skills do I need to succeed as an applicant for this course? We understand that you may not be studying mathematics by choice. To succeed in the course you need to have a positive attitude and work hard to improve. You will need to work on past exam papers outside of lessons and be prepared to have a dialogue with your teacher about which areas of maths you particularly need help with.

The aim of the course is to achieve a grade 4 or 5 in GCSE Mathematics. We will be studying the foundation tier paper.

What knowledge do I need to succeed? We will build on the knowledge you already have from studying GCSE maths (or functional skills). We will assess your prior knowledge and skills at the start of the course so that we can focus on the areas you need to improve.

What Topics will I study? GCSE Mathematics covers number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, statistics and probability. The new GCSE exam also has an enhanced emphasis on problem solving.

Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a grade 3 in GCSE Mathematics or a Level 1 pass in Maths Functional Skills. If you achieve a grade 4 In GCSE Mathematics at school then you may


also wish to join this course in order to improve to a grade 5 or above. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching styles will be used including group and individual work, class discussion, investigative work and solving problems individually or in groups. We try to make lessons different from the GCSE Mathematics lessons you had at school. What have I got to do in order to do well? You need to attend all lessons and keep to the deadlines for homework. Many career, apprenticeship and higher education entry requirements require a grade 4 (or grade C) or above in Mathematics.


Sport

BTEC Level 2

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For one year. Equivalent to two GCSEs. What is this course about? By studying the Level 2 Sport students develop a range of skills and techniques that are essential for successful progression into the sports industry or to sports related further education courses. Level 2 Sport students complete units in practical sport as well as coaching while all units are underpinned by theoretical studies. Students are encouraged to study this course alongside other areas of Academy of Sport provision. What topics will I study? This course is made up of: Two Core Units: Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise. (Externally assessed unit) This unit looks at components of fitness, exploring training methods and investigation of fitness testing to gain understanding of fitness levels. Its assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions.

Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance. This unit looks at the rules, regulations and scoring systems of different sports, practically demonstrate skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports and reviewing of sports performance. One Mandatory Unit: Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance. (Externally assessed unit) This unit will look at the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system. Its assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions. Five Optional Specialist Units: Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness. This until will look at designing a personal fitness programme, exercise adherence factors and strategies, implementation of a training programme and reviewing a personal training programme. Unit 6: Leading Sports Activities. This unit will look at the attributes associated with successful sports leadership, planning and leading


sports activities and reviewing personal planning and leading of sports activities. Unit 9: Lifestyle and Well-being. This unit will look at recommended guidelines for physical activity, what makes a healthy diet, diet planning, health risks associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption and the impact of drugs on health and sports performance. Unit 11: Running a Sports Event. This unit will look at planning, organising and running a sports event and reviewing personal contribution to running a sport event. Students on this course also participate in work experience, which will involve enhancing the local community in terms of delivery of PE & Sport to young children. Unit 13: Profiling Sports Performance. This unit will look at sports movements and performances, how to collect performance data and improve performance as a result. This unit will involve elements of practical performance as well as class based work. How will my work be assessed? The course will be assessed both internally and externally by controlled assessment set by the exam board. Units 1 and 7 will be assessed via an on screen computer exam or written paper.

The rest of the course will be assessed using a variety of methods including written work, presentations and practical assessments. Can I do other courses alongside this course? This is a full time course although you must take GCSE in Maths and/ or English alongside if you have not yet achieved an 9 - 4 grade in either of these subjects. Alternatively, you will take a Functional Skills course in English and/or Mathematics. Students need to have an understanding of how sport affects the body and mind, and the effects on performance of health, fitness and nutrition. Knowledge of the rules and regulations of a variety of sports and an interest in current sporting affairs is very important. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Good independent study skills and the ability to meet deadlines are essential skills for success. Accurate self assessment of your own work and progress. As well as working independently you need to


be able to work in a team. Students need to be keen on a range of physical activities and have a good range of practical skills. A keen interest in topical sporting issues and developments. Time management and the ability to balance college, sport, social and paid working commitments are crucial. To adhere to the Worthing College Sport Standards of; Be on time, bring the correct kit/equipment, work hard and healthy body = healthy mind. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of two grade 3s at GCSE and be able to demonstrate a real passion and interest for sport. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles are used during the course. Formal lessons are combined with discussion, case studies, task- based learning, practical activities, student-led activities and ILT. Teaching resources and course material are available on the student intranet, this material is very important as the workload is demanding. Individual support is available to all students.

What do people do with Sport BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate? The course provides an excellent foundation for candidates intending to pursue a career in: Sports development • Leisure • Recreation • Health • Leisure and fitness • Public Services • Apprenticeships in Sport and • Personal Training If you achieve a Merit or above and meet attendance and behaviour criteria you can progress to Level 3 courses at the College such as the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport.


Travel and Tourism City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma

For how long will I study? One year. Equivalent 3 GCSEs.

for UK Travel and Tourism Destinations and Worldwide Travel Destinations are open book and you can take in your work pack you complete in lessons and an Atlas.

What is this course about? By investigating different areas of travel and tourism the course aims to develop your understanding of the travel and tourism industry.

All work produced on the course contributes to the final mark. Coursework Units are internally marked by your teachers and externally verified.

What topics will I study? You will study of range of topics during the course including: • Interpersonal skills for the Travel and Tourism work place • Principles of customer service in hospitality, leisure and Travel and Tourism • UK Travel and Tourism destinations • Worldwide Travel Destinations • Resort Representatives • Travel Planning • Introduction to Cruise Industry • Visitor Attractions

Students can achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction.

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020.

How will my work be assessed? This course is assessed by coursework and on-line multiple choice exams. Some coursework tasks are completed in timed controlled conditions. Online exams

What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to become more independent and self-motivated in the way you work. You need to be able to work alone and in groups, you need to have good time-management skills and a passion for the travel industry. You will also need to enjoy coursework and be willing to develop your IT skills to present your work in different ways. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 3 to start this course. What are the lessons like? We use a wide range of teaching methods throughout the course including presentations, discussions, group work and lots of independent research. As much of the course is assignment based you will be spending time working on these in

lessons and completing work packs for exam units to prepare for online exams. What do people do with City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism? Students find that because of the skills they develop on the course they have many employment opportunities available to them. If you achieve a Merit you will have the opportunity to progress to Level 3 courses at Worthing College such as a Level 3 Travel and Tourism. Additional information about this course: You will have a work experience week which is a compulsory element of the course. There are a range of day trips linked to units studied, and the possibility of an overseas residential trip.
