Kids@worthing nursery Introduction The nursery at Worthing College is called ‘Kids @ Worthing Nursery’. Newly opened in September 2000, it was purpose-built to provide up to 56 places for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. Worthing has played a key role in responding to the Government’s National Childcare strategy. Childcare places are available to students, staff and the wider community including children of working and non-working parents. The nursery is managed on a day-to-day basis by the nursery manager who is responsible for childcare and daily supervision of around 20 staff. The manager is well-supported by a strong team of qualified and experienced staff.
Our aims We aim to provide good quality, accessible childcare and education in a warm, friendly, happy environment where each child is recognised, appreciated and encouraged to reach his or her full potential through praise, sensitivity and mutual respect. Kids @ Worthing nursery has an excellent reputation for a happy, well-organised, aesthetically pleasing day nursery where parents are happy to leave their children knowing they will receive the highest quality childcare and education. kids @ Worthing nursery provides: 9 Registered day care facilities for children aged 6 weeks – 5 years between the hours of
7.30am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday. All year round except Bank Holidays and the 3 working days between Christmas and New Year.

9 Three and Four year old children are eligible to claim an Early Education Grant from West Sussex County Council, via the nursery.

Working in partnership with Parents Parents are the most important people in a young child’s life. We want to work in partnership with parents and carers to enhance and support their role at this very significant stage of development for children. We will encourage parents to be aware of our aims, policies and procedures. We have an open door policy where parents are encouraged to share information with staff and staff will share nursery day information and information about their children’s development with parents. Parents are also invited to volunteer to join in with activities at the nursery, by prior arrangement with the Nursery manager. Progress meetings are held to enable staff from the nursery to speak directly with parents and effectively address their needs. Parents will be involved in shared record keeping about their own child, verbally or from examples of work and play. Parents should have regular contact with staff and are always welcomed into the nursery. Feedback from parents is welcome and important. We will regularly carry out surveys to assess and inform improvements.
Principles underpinning young children’s learning Every child is recognised as having individual needs and their own way of learning at their own pace. Children learn in many different ways; by playing, talking, observing, planning, doing, questioning, experimenting, testing, repeating, reflecting and responding to adults and to each other. Wellplanned play both indoors and outdoors, is a key way in which children learn with enjoyment and challenge.

Nursery Organisation Children are cared for in 3 main areas of the nursery depending on their age and stage of development. We have two baby rooms catering for 18 children under 2 years old, 9 children in each room with a ratio of 1 to 3. We have a very lively room for toddlers with 12 children aged approx 2 to 3 years, with a ratio of 1 to 4. In our pre-school room we can accommodate 26 children age three to five years’ with a ratio of 1 to 8. Fully qualified and experienced nursery nurses, room leaders and deputies are employed in each of the three main areas to closely supervise the work of staff teams in the nursery and to support the work of the manager.
Progress Records Records for individual children are a positive way of identifying what children have achieved, what they understand and can do. Over a period of time they also indicate how children have progressed, the rate at which they have progressed and where children may need further help and support, or extending in their learning. Our aim is to continually monitor and assess children’s progress to enable us to take their individual needs into account when planning activities in the nursery. Each child within the nursery has a progress and development folder which includes observations, child’s interests, activities and photos. These are kept up to date by your child’s key worker and are available for you to look at whenever you wish. Activities within the nursery are planned and designed to meet the needs of children within all age groups. Further more detailed information is available from the Nursery manager.
Outings As part of the nursery life we regularly take children off the premises, usually walking to somewhere close by. These opportunities are special for the children and are important as ‘milestones’ in their development. The pre-school group enjoy trips to Drusillas, the theatre and St Barnabas.
Food policy in the nursery Food prepared for children in the nursery will comply Wherever possible with the following principles:

For lunchtime menus only fresh lean Meat (not beef), fresh fish, fresh and frozen vegetables, lentils or pulses are used. Fresh fruit is given and vegetarian and other diets are provided if requested.
9 No salt, pepper, colouring, flavouring or other additives are added. 9 The use of additional sugar is kept to a minimum.
Meals and Snacks Our own qualified chef is employed to provide a wide variety of meals which are freshly cooked and prepared in the nursery every day. Special diets are catered for and parents are encouraged to provide information to the nursery about children’s favourites. Each week we have at least one fish, lamb and chicken dish. We use only wholemeal bread and supply fresh fruit and vegetables to all children everyday. The nursery displays details of meals provided every day including how much or how little children have eaten. For babies we provide formula feeds/individually prepared meals to assist with weaning. (Cow and Gate or SMA formula only if you wish to supply your own you may do so) Meals and snacks are provided at the following approximate times:

A variety of high-teas, hot or cold (3.00pm) The nursery menu ensures that the children have a balanced and healthy diet. We do not add sugar or salt and wherever possible, use fresh produce. Any packaged foods used do not contain controversial colourings or preservatives. We reflect a multicultural menu and encourage children to try new tastes and flavours.

Parent/child induction After your initial enquiry you will be invited into the nursery to view the facilities and talk to the Nursery Manager about your child’s individual needs. There are a number of forms to sign at this point including the Day Nursery Agreement and Nursery/Parent Contract and permission forms for outings, emergency medical attention and photographs. No child will be included in filming etc without the prior permission of their parent/guardian. This visit will also give you the opportunity to ask any questions regarding the nursery, its staff, its activities and routines etc. We would also suggest that your child has some preliminary visits (no charge) prior to them starting at the nursery to ensure that they are as settled as possible from their first day. This is done on a flexible basis completely dependant on yours and your child’s needs. There are also some questions that the nursery manager will ask you. It is necessary that your work numbers and emergency contact numbers are kept on record at the nursery. We also need some details concerning your child’s health such as the name and telephone number of their GP, whether they require a special diet or if they have any allergies. Fees are shown on the application form. A fixed monthly fee is calculated based on the number of sessions booked. All fees are paid by standing order on the 1st of each month. A small deposit is required to reserve a place. Nappies are provided by the nursery. Parents are asked to provide spare clothing and ensure items are named.
