LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

One of my favorite quotes is “Creativity is the highest form of intelligence.” Needless to say my regard toward talent is similar to divine admiration. But life wields an unexpected and powerful twist to all things, and life’s unique command on talent dictates that talent is nothing without a solid work ethic. Some of the most successful people I know in their respective fields will admit without hesitation that they may not have been the best in their field but they were willing to work the hardest despite being underestimated and counted out. In this issue you will be reading about talented people who aren’t afraid to work hard. It is an honor to be able to interview them. I can honestly say that each interview inspired me and reassured me that I should keep pursuing my dreams. I had an unexpected moment of joy when I realized that two of my feature interviews I discovered in my favorite magazine of all time, Suede Magazine. I remember being in shock when I saw a ballerina who looked like me. I remember thinking it was so cool to read

about successful talented people like Marcus Samuelsson who was being profiled in that issue as well. I found myself speechless when I realized how beautifully congruent life can be. The overall lesson I walked away with is that nothing can confine your ability to succeed except your choices. Our featured interview with Misty Copeland illustrates that perfectly. The ballerina was well past the traditional age to start ballet. However, after one advance class she was willing to work just as hard as anyone else. So hopefully this issue will show you that the most crucial key to success is a sound work ethic. And once you accept that anything is possible. Be inspired.

You are worthy,

Ju’lia Samuels

WORTHY GADGETS BY: ANDRE SAMUELS

OUR NEWS EDITOR AND GADGET ENTHUSIAST SHARES HIS LATEST PREDICTIONS ON THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED iWATCH The iWatch is coming and its impending arrival has the tech world twitching with excitement. Most tech enthusiasts expect an iWatch that simply shows notifications of emails and texts like its competitors. We believe they are ALL WRONG! We think Apple wants to duplicate the MagicBand from Disney World, which act as your room key, your e-wallet at restaurants and your admission tickets. We’ve held our own design studio and conceptualized Apple’s next creation. These are our predictions: THE iWATCH WILL BE THE NEW iPHONE We are unimpressed by devices that need to be tethered to cell phones for use. The iWatch will be a stand-alone phone consisting of the watch band and a Beats by Dre ear bud with Bluetooth technology that allows users to take private phone calls. APPLE’S MAGICBAND Apple wants to turn the whole world into Disneyland. The iWatch will have many of the same functions as MagicBands—granting access to homes, activating your car, and payment at stores will occur via iWatch. We imagine a curved band that utilizes much of the curved surface for displaying websites, music and media. THERE WILL BE MORE THAN ONE IWATCH The full iWatch/ iPhone will represent the most expensive option. A tethered watch that relies on a

separate iPhone 6 will offer another. Both tethered and untethered watches will come in a male or female variety to address differences in wrist size. All in all, we envision a minimum of four iWatch options (each available in different colors with designer accents). The IWATCH WILL ELIMINATE CASH You will never need to carry your wallet, cash or credit cards again. The iWatch will enable a universal payment system. MORE THAN NOTIFICATIONS, A NEW ERA IN PROGRAMMING Smart programs will deliver contextually relevant information to your watch and provide you with options to act on. When you’re shopping, the price of an object will flash on your wrist when you pick it up. You will buy without standing in line. Video billboards will recognize your iWatch and display ads based on your interests and buying history. In confusing buildings like hospitals, «turn-here» directions might flash on video boards as you navigate through confusing wings. HOME AUTOMATION WILL BE MAGICAL Proximity sensors will activate your home devices when you’re near. Doors will open automatically. In your home, lights will turn on automatically when you enter a room and dim when you exit. Your television will turn on when you plop on your couch. You’ll change channels by swiping your wrist. When your lasagna is done, you will turn the oven off with a tap of your wrist. The iWatch will become the universal remote you never put down—or rather, you never take off.

KEY WEST

THE CASA MARINA & THE REACH RESORT

BY: JU’LIA SAMUELS

T

he island of Key West stands as one of the premier locations in a mecca of more than 1,700 islands. First settled in the 1880s and separated from the Florida mainland by 42 bridges, Key West is closer to Havana, Cuba than it is to Miami. Needless to say, the culture is rich, the ocean views are hypnotically beautiful and the drinks are abundant. Serene cascading currents bring soothing waves to the warm sands and carry away all remnants of stress. For two days and two nights, I found myself in the cradle of relaxation and luxury, curated by Casa Marina, 1500 Reynolds St., and The Reach Resort, 1435 Simonton St. (Waldorf Astoria Resorts).

a

CASA MARINA RESORT IN KEY WEST IS HOME TO THE LARGEST PRIVATE BEACH IN KEY WEST.

Old Key West and present-day luxury converge to create a signature aesthetic that is transformative to say the least at Casa Marina. Guests dined by the ocean, enjoyed signature cocktails and took full advantage of the two oceanfront pools complete with concierge services. The large hammocks that lined the resort’s private beach, which is the largest privately owned beach in Key West, swayed in the breeze while cradling guests. As I sat down to fully take in the wondrous view of the resort, I indulged in a few lobster sliders from the resort’s restaurant, Sun-Sun Beach Bar and Grille. It was impossible to not appreciate the resort’s classically luxurious beauty. Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Casa Marina is a private paradise with 311 rooms. If beauty doesn’t win you over, the amenities will.

Blue Heaven Key Lime Pie The beachside Spa al Maré, which offers exotic oils and treatments inspired by the islands, should amaze you. Additional amenities included a fitness center, a lighted tennis court, eco-tours, on-site sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and Jet Ski excursions. Fostering a true sense of indulgence, the resort also offers a daily breakfast buffet served on the terrace. During my stay, the sweet fruit, freshly prepared omelet and supremely delicious smoothie started my morning off perfectly. Any part of my mind that was trying to fight the idea of

completely relaxing was massaged away during my Swedish massage with custom lavender oil at the resort’s beachside spa. The Reach Resort Just a few moments away from Casa Marina was The Reach Resort, which has a total of 150 guest rooms, is an intimate oasis for couples and anyone interested in carving out their own little piece of paradise. Equipped with an attentive staff, the only private, natural-sand beach in Key West and a culinary gem—The Strip House— it is no wonder why I saw two weddings

taking place during my two-day stay in Key West. The rooms at the resort take on a more contemporary feel with vaulted ceilings, wood accents and furnished balconies. I took full advantage

Another tour that I had the pleasure of taking with Historic Tours of America allowed me to fully appreciate the rich and beautiful legacy that belongs to Key West. I learned so much, and there is still more to learn. Needless to say, I can’t wait to return to Key West.

DIET DIARY

Does it Work? Is it possible to drop pounds in days? We can’t speak for everyone but our editor-in-chief shares her fitness journey with readers and reveals secrets about her personal battle with getting in shape. With enlisted guidance from OnJuice and Deliver Lean, Ju’lia offers her critique of the latest trusted dietary aid taking South Florida by storm.

J

ust a few days ago, I ran into a relative I had not seen for years. The first thing she said to me was, “Lia you finally gained some weight. It really looks good on you.” The strangest thing is the attitude that most people have when it comes to gaining weight. With that said, let me provide some background information. The infamous ‘freshman 15’ expression was no random school joke as some people packed on the pounds in their first year of college and continued to gain weight throughout. Not for me. College was the time in my life when I lost the most weight. I was stressed, and by senior year I was

sincerely depressed with the pressure of facing an ailing job market. When I left for college I weighed 120 pounds. When I finally graduated, I weighed 105 pounds. I’m 5’7. Needless to say, my friends were worried about me. Everyone was pretty confident that once I returned home I would find my way back to a healthy weight. What happened this past year to my weight was completely unexpected. In college my response to stress was a loss of appetite. At 26, I had a completely different response. The more stressed out I became the more I ate. Most of my stress eating would happen during my peak work hours, which were at midnight and later. It wasn’t that I was eating large portions of food, but the late-night eating rapidly caught up with me and eventually increased my appetite.

20/ Worthy-magazine.com

One thing I learned on my fitness journey is that we all gain weight in different places. By the time I actually noticed how much weight I had gained, I was 25 pounds heavier than I had ever been. I weighed 145 pounds. The most important thing I learned was to love my body at every size, but it might have been my hardest lesson.

OUR FAVORITE COLD PRESSED JUICE HOWEVER MINT CONDITION WAS A VERY CLOSE SECOND

Talent Issue

My choice to get in shape and change my eating habits has more to do with trying to maintain my weight than shedding a lot of pounds. It was rather surprising to me to hear how unhealthy people thought I looked in the past. But in all honesty, when I first realized that I gained 25 pounds my immediate reaction was to loose it all. It did not happen very easily and I am still a work in progress. During this process I learned a few new things and some old things I had forgotten. I enlisted the help of family members, friends and Deliver Lean, so I wanted to share what I learned so far. 1. Learn More about Your Body Before Setting a Weight Goal Something that I always noticed and completely forgot when I felt like I no longer looked the same was that we all carry our weight differently. Even when I weighed 120 pounds people actually thought I weighed less and were surprised to hear 120. That has more to do with how your weight is distributed throughout your body. Part of the reason I didn’t realize that I gained weight had a lot to do with where my weight gain started, which was in my hips and thighs. By the time I had a belly I had

21/ Worthy-magazine.com

already gained 20 pounds. Once you realize that your 130 pounds may look different from another person’s 130 pounds, you may reconsider basing your goal weight on someone else’s size or even the traditional height and weight ratio guidelines. 2. Portion Control With Deliver Lean To gain control over the portions I was eating, especially when stressed, I had the opportunity to test out a few of Deliver Lean’s recipes for four days, and I have to admit that the service worked wonders on getting my eating habits back on track. Additionally, the meals are not only portion controlled but gluten-free with minimal calories. They are essentially healthy gourmet meals. I paired a few dishes with their cold-pressed juices, which were amazing. The idea that I was getting the proper nutrients made it easier for me to feel more energized and less inclined to feel like I needed to eat junk food. 3. Stay Hydrated Another great reason to quench your thirst is that the more hydrated you are the less your body will store all the things that you eat. The less water I had the more my body stored the things I ate, both good

and bad. And living off of coffee and junk food, you can imagine how well that was working for me. 4. Take Your Vitamins This is another thing I rediscovered along the way. I forgot about how your body responds when it is lacking nutrients. When your body feels like it is missing something it will try to store what you have to take care of you. The more you take care of your body the more it will focus on functioning well and not storing what it thinks you have forgotten to give it. 5. Get Physical The toughest pill for me to swallow: nothing replaces cardio. If you want to see significant results you have to surrender to cardio. I am a yoga baby. However, I see the most results after a great cardio workout. For the sake of transparency, I will admit that I just signed up for kickboxing class, and so far I have lost five pounds. For updates on my personal fitness journey, check out my personal blog Ju’lia Catherine. Be sure to check out Deliver Lean at www. deliverlean.com to see the delicious meal options they can provide to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

A multivitamin is ideal for keeping your nutrients up and your body running like a machine. Water is essential to your health and for conditioning your body to get lean.

I enjoyed the gourmet portion-controlled meals that were delivered to my home for four days. To give you an idea of how delicious the meals were, for my first day of breakfast I had: Italian Egg Frittata w/ Arugula, Spaghetti Squash, Roasted Tomato & Parmesan Cheese Gluten Free 349 CALORIES | 37 G PROTEIN | 9 G CARBS Deliver Lean is certainly Worthy Approved!

Photography: The Pontes Group

WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? 2009 HOW DID YOU CREATE YOUR COMPANY? I was practically raised in a sewing room, so apparel design and production has been apart of my life for a long time. I was always pushed to pursue more “practical” careers but finally took the leap after a career crisis in 2009. I started Maison d’Afie by doing indepth research and testing small creations I made. I continued to pursue my dream because of all the positive responses I was receiving! WHAT ARE THE MAJOR STEPS TO STARTING A BUSINESS? WHERE DID YOUR ORGANIZATION’S FUNDING/CAPITAL COME FROM AND HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT GETTING IT? I think it is important to be realistic as to why you want to start a business. I am passionate about the fashion industry and designing, but sometimes you need to do more. It is important to develop a business plan to follow and define the vision for your business. In terms of finances, I continue my regular accounting job, which helps fund my business. DESCRIBE/OUTLINE YOUR TYPICAL DAY? No day is the same when trying to grow a home-based business. Some days I work on sketches and sourcing fabrics. Other days I work on production. Most recently, I attended a fashion conference with industry experts.

WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHERS? My designs infuse tribal accents into classic modern silhouettes. I want to attract modern women with character by providing fashionable clothing options that keep them well-dressed at all times. WHAT THREE PIECES OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS? -Seek mentorship -Plan carefully -When you start, don’t stop WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR FALL 2014? I am looking forward to seeing more color! Fall is usually so filled with black, greys and neutrals, but this year I saw colorful options on the runway. It will be fun to see women exploring this new trend. WHAT FASHION TRENDS WILL YOU INTEGRATE INTO YOUR FALL COLLECTION? I did that already. I am now working on my spring/summer 2015. Thinking pleats, prints and sheaths.

FRILLS AND THRILLS

PHOTOGRAPHY: THE PONTES GROUP

Exclusive with Sharon Bui and Kate Steadman Upon our first introduction to the clothing line, we were immediatley enchanted by the elegant

simplicity of Frill Clothing. The classically flirty silhouttes are youthful and polished. What more could we really ask for? Discussing business with these visionaries was inspiring and easy. HOW DID YOU CREATE YOUR CURRENT COMPANY? Kate Steadman and I started Frill our junior year of college. I saw a need within the sorority market for affordable and stylish recruitment dresses and wanted to fulfill that need! WHAT ARE THE MAJOR STEPS TO STARTING A BUSINESS? WHERE DID YOUR

ORGANIZATION’S FUNDING/ CAPITAL COME FROM AND HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT GETTING IT? DID YOU OBTAIN INVESTORS FOR YOUR VENTURE? How? Besides filing all of the necessary paperwork, our company was jumpstarted by creating social media pages, developing a working business model, and creating a

special production process for our short lead times. As college students, Kate and I didn’t have a lot of money. So, we both pitched in $250 to get our business license from the city and state and went from there! That was the only start up capital we obtained and from there, we reinvested our profits into growing the company.

30/ Worthy-magazine.com Talent Issue 2014

DESCRIBE/OUTLINE YOUR TYPICAL DAY. In the morning, I start by answering all of my emails (every business owner knows this takes a while!). I check on our Bridal Consultant to make sure she doesn’t have any questions, and then I check on our production team to make sure they are on track for the week. I make sure that our sorority clients are up to date with their payments and then post on social media. After that, I work on my to-do list, which is usually extremely long. Right now, items on the top of that list include developing marketing ideas for our upcoming sorority season and improving our website. Kate’s morning starts about the same way. She checks on the production team, emails vendors and suppliers, orders new materials and basically makes sure that our supply chain stays in tact. Following that, she then runs numbers to make sure all of our financials are up to date. AS A BUSINESS OWNER, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU WILL LEARN IS THAT THE TO-DO LISTS ARE ALWAYS EXPANDING AND THERE ARE NO “TYPICAL DAYS.” HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU WORK A DAY ON AVERAGE? Before we had an office, I’m pretty sure we worked all hours of the day. Now that we have a beautiful 1,500-square-foot office, we are able to have eighthour days and put our laptops aside when we get home! Don’t get me wrong, though, during

crunch time, we will easily put in 60-hour weeks! WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHERS? We are different from our competitors in that we let our sorority girls customize their dream recruitment outfit while also giving back to their chapter’s philanthropy. The sorority girls are able to choose any color for their fabric, add any notions and can embellish the pieces to their liking. Additionally, we make sure that no other sorority at their school has the same style or color! WHAT THREE PIECES OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS? Finish College. I was so tempted to drop out when we started Frill. The balance of making Frill successful and completing college started getting hard. In the long run, though, my expensive diploma was definitely worth it. Pay attention in class. I was a nerd. I loved my fashion classes. Even though class was boring at times, all of the information I learned ultimately helped me with my business. Not only that, but while I was running a business in college, I started to notice that everything my professors talked about was something I needed to know in order to grow professionally. You don’t always need a lot of money to start a business. Kate and I barely had anything in our bank accounts when we started Frill. So, we developed

a business model that required very little initial capital, requiring instead that our clients pay up front for their orders.

We are extremely dedicated to our customers and instill in all of our employees that customer service is of the utmost importance. In addition, Miami women have very active lives and always have somewhere to go and endless reasons for needing gorgeous hair.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TYPICAL BLO EXPERIENCE? It’s all about the vibe. The atmosphere of Blo is fun and inviting and guests leave feeling pampered. The Blo experience always includes a mini head massage, a consultation, the use of high quality products and a catwalk quality blow out given by an expertly trained stylist. WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR FALL HAIR TRENDS? This fall we expect to see a lot of relaxed, tousled tresses. While this may sound simple, it takes an expert to create the perfect effortless look.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HAIR TRENDS FOR THE FALL? We love the look of a messy braided bun. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MUSTHAVE ITEMS FOR PERFECT HAIR? Perfect hair starts at the wash so we recommend a professional shampoo and conditioner such as UNITE’s U Luxury line. Tools of the trade are also key so we also suggest investing in a professional quality hair

dryer and one or two high end brushes. There are a few styling products that everyone should have in their arsenal including a light-weight leave in conditioner, smoothing serum and a finishing spray. A few good hair clips are also useful as the best blow dry results from sectioning the hair. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL HAIRSTYLE? DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE HAIRSTYLE? DR. PATTY’S COSMETIC

UTOPIA

Dr. April Patterson is the brains and beauty behind the first cosmetic dental boutique.

WORTHY

INTERVIEW

Dr. April Patty

WHAT MADE YOU START YOUR DENTAL BOUTIQUE? I started the Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique because I wanted to upgrade the dental client experience and help to alleviate anxiety associated with a visit to the dentist’s office. It really is the 21st century’s new and improved version of the dental office. My goal is to be the change that starts the movement to improve the experience overall. HOW DO YOU FEE ABOUT THE RESPONSE SO FAR? I’ve been extremely humbled by the overwhelmingly positive patient responses to the dental boutique concept. I hear over and over again how excited they are to have a onestop shop.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? My goals for the future absolutely include opening more Patty’s Dental Boutiques, of course starting here in South Florida but also expanding out to other states and eventually other

countries. WHO INSPIRES YOU PROFESSIONALLY I would say until recently I was

themselves to be treated differently. I believe that every professional should be who they are and reflect their own personal standards. I honestly believe that people will only treat you as well or as poorly as you’d treat yourself. I AM WORTHY BECAUSE ______? I’m worthy because I’m hungry! I WANT IT!!! MOST COMMON REQUEST YOU RECIEVE AT YOUR DENTAL BOUTIQUE? The most common request that I receive from clients is how to look rejuvenated – not necessarily younger – just revitalized.

internally inspired. As of late I’ve become a serious follower of life coach Tony Robbins. DO YOU THINK THAT FEMALE PROFESSIONALS ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY FROM MALE PROFESSIONALS?I refuse to be “treated differently.” I think people are only treated differently if they allow

YOUR FAVORITE BEAUTY SECRET? One of my favorite at-home remedies is oil pulling. I recommend using coconut oil because it’s a lot easier on the palate than sesame oil. Just swish the oil around in your mouth for about 15 minutes every morning. I find that, when patients practice oil pulling, they pay more attention to their oral health, which in turn leads to healthier gums and teeth. STYLE

With DAVID MICHAEL

It’s that time of year again! Summer is just beginning, but fall fashion is already popping into everyone’s mind. Don’t get me wrong. I love the heat against my skin and the loose layers of clothing. I’m a native South Floridian, darlings! However, I’m ready for those heavy coats, fleeces and to make use of my Camel Togo leather Hermès Birkin bag—40 cm and not a centimeter smaller. This autumn will offer up plenty of use for my Birkin against some delectable tweeds and even mankets, the male equivalent of women’s ponchos. This season is all about travel. Whether you’re styling in the gritty streets of New York or basking in the Southern California sun, I’ve got a few trends to help point your style in the right direction. AT THE OK CORRAL Paula Cole once sang, «Where have all the cowboys gone?» Apparently, they’ve traded in their spurs for crocodile boots and super stylish cowboy hats! Concept Korea, Kenneth Cole and Cushnie Et Ochs, gave us luxury saloon with a dark edge. Though no ill-fated, westerninspired button downs graced the runway, designers took a fresh approach with longer lines and wider-brimmed hats. The collections are an ode to a rough and rowdy patch of American history made beautiful. This look is definitely something to check out. NORSE’ERN LIGHTS Somewhere in the rainbow halls of Valhalla and through the paradise of Asgard, Frida, Loki and even Thor

of jewelry won’t hurt. THAT 60’S SHOW

decided to bless us mere mortals with these warm and esoteric prints. Ranging in a multitude of rich earth tones, design houses like Emilio Pucci, Burberry and Rag & Bone complimented these looks with shearling coats and boots fit for a warrior goddess. Don’t get too Asgardian on me though. Tone this look down with a fedora, a scarf and a structured bag. Nothing is more autumn than this, and all that’s missing is a goblet of Merlot. THE NEW NORMAL American fashion, in my most humble opinion, is all about being well put together in a very relaxed and effortless kind of way. In years past, this has not always been the case. There were nightmarish shoulder pads, too short and too tight cocktail dresses—love you, but thanks Kim Kardashian—and platform high heels. (I fully accept the return of the pump!) This goround, there is a return to those effortless Katharine Hepburn pants with even more grace. Hermès and Christophe Lemaire lead the pack in this show-stopping style. My season favorite thus far is Jil Sander. Less is more, but adding one statement piece

Let’s take it back to the decade of high-waist everything and voluminous hair. The 60’s are taking over this season. Haider Ackermann, Miu Miu, Valentino, and Louis Vuitton have all put us in a hair-spray loving time capsule with empire waists and wrap dresses in rich hues of merlot and earthen clay. They adorned their pieces with crystals and embellishments to create a more opulent, glamorous look. ‘TONE’ DOWN FOR WHAT? All designers did something a little different for fall. Color, as we have never seen it before, swarmed the runway in droves. The color was high-powered and high definition. They incorporated so many different ways to wear color in coats, bags and shoes with prints galore. Rev up your look by trying plum shades if you’re pale. For darker skin, try warmer jewel tones to add that look of luxe. Women’s Fall Prediction Though I love all of the aforementioned trends, this fall is all about color. All of these looks can be enriched with a splash, and it’s a safe option if you aren’t bold enough to try some of the more brazen trends. Don’t be foolish and turn into a Picasso. Don’t wear neon pieces with matching makeup. Opt for a more subtle and natural look. See you this fall!

McKinley Freeman

THE CHARMER BEHIND OUR FAVORITE CHARACTER ON VH1’S HIT SERIES «HIT THE FLOOR» Photography: James Lee

As if you couldn’t be more obsessed with McKinley Freeman, our interview with the heartthrob unearthed even more reasons to love the actor. Just to make things easier for you, his voice really is deeply melodic, he is a poet, and he really is the ideal combination of brains—with a background in finance—and good looks. Feel free to take a moment to yourself. As a Chicago native, McKinley played basketball while obtaining his bachelor’s degree in finance at the University of Illinois. After graduating, he was quickly recruited by IBM for their worldwide marketing and business development program until a chance audition landed him a role on ABC’s ‘All My Children.’ He’s since appeared on award-winning shows including FOX’s ‘Bones,’ ABC’s ‘General Hospital,’ NBC’s

‘Days of Our Lives,’ as well as the feature film ‘End of Watch’ alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. His thoughts on Derek’s attraction to Asha on the VH1 series ‘Hit the Floor’ “I just think that with the life he lives he has access to a lot of things, but he doesn’t have a lot of genuine relationships,” Freeman said. “He doesn’t have an intimate connection with anyone and I think Asha represents that to him.” On his favorite poet “My favorite poet is Martin Luther King Jr. His speeches were poetry. poets are the most honest poets and his speeches and sermons were.” On what makes him worthy “I am worthy because I have faith.” For those who can’t get enough of McKinley Freeman, he is among the few actors who actually make use of social media on a consistent basis. For three months now, the actor has even hosted open forums on his Instagram page (@ mckinleyfreeman) on Wednesdays, which he affectionately calls #WhatchuThinkWednesday. Talent Issue 2014

SOUND WORTHY

Doreen Taylor Singer and songwriter Doreen Taylor is the perfect blend of country and rock music. She was named by the Huffington Post as an artist to watch, and we can’t seem to take our eyes off of her. The Philadelphia-based singer is emerging on the scene compelled by noble purpose in an era of fameobsessed artists. The songstress was honorably chosen by the nation’s leading park advocacy organization, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), to write and produce an inspiring song to benefit the NPCA’s work protecting and enhancing America’s national parks, aptly named “Colors of the USA.” When discussing her creative process Taylor was very honest. “It varies,” the singer admitted. “I never have the same technique. It has lot to do with my mood and when I am in the zone. There are times when I will have a dry spell, but you just have to push and eventually the melody or the lyrics will come.”

If her unique drive doesn’t win you over, her down-to-earth personality will. The songstress even handles all of her social media. “I have an abnormal job,” Taylor confessed. “I appreciate normal things. I try to decompress. I do all of my social media. It’s hard but I love doing it. I credit the success of my last tour, the Magic Tour, to my social media connection.”

Known for his larger than life personality and playful spirit, Pazos is the dream hairstylist who can generate an engaging conversation out of thin air while creating red-carpet ready hair. He has worked with the who’s who of the entertainment world—from the Kardashians to actress Ashley Greene. Pazos was very open when discussing the show ‘LA Hair’ and it was very easy to appreciate his candor. “We all understand that the point of the show is to entertain,” Pazos said. “So I would say that the show

portrays about 50 percent of who I really am. I think I am nicer than what you get to see on the show. We know that when the camera is there to turn up.” In the next five years, Anthony admits that he would love to have his own talk show in which he would encourage his viewers to be themselves and to have a positive outlook on life. He would also like to see his salon grow even more. As his first piece of advice, Anthony offers some tough love and a call to action. “First, get off your ass even if you are afraid that you will fail,” he said. “You can survive it’s (the failure) not going to last forever. MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SIGNATURE FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS THAT HAVE WON THE DEVOTION OF ALL HOPELESS

T H E BOLD and BEAUTIFUL “«I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I HELPED CREATE A BRAND THAT PEOPLE ABSOLUTELY LOVE.» - ADDIE FLYNN, DESIGNER OF KALLA

ROMANTICS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND NOW CHICAGO. ARMED WITH A CUSTOM LINE OF CHOCOLATES , WINE AND FLORAL DESIGNS THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP LOOKING AT NO STUBBORN HEART STANDS A CHANCE

Photography: The Dana Agency

KALLA

WHAT MADE YOU START YOUR COMPANY? We looked at the market and saw the opportunity to reinvent online floral delivery. We felt really passionate about putting the thought back into floral gifting. Somewhere along the way, the human aspect got lost and the product offering got very stale. HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THE UNIQUE STORY BEHIND EACH ARRANGEMENT? We look at the components in each bouquet and how they relate to each other and then find a unique story that mirrors that relationship. For instance, ‘Anna and Valsav’ was named after two famed Russian dancers because of the way the orchids dance across the green dianthus. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST UNIQUE ELEMENT OF KALLA? Overall, it’s really the entire experience that is totally unique and

holistic. We started with a bold, new take on floral design, created a beautiful gift box, and added in wine and our own line of gourmet chocolate. We wanted an entirely flawless gifting experience where every detail is accounted for and thought through. COULD YOU PLEASE DISCUSS THE GOURMET TREATS THAT CAN ACCOMPANY THE ARRANGEMENT? The chocolates are absolutely gorgeous, almost too pretty to eat! We partnered with Christopher Elbow, an amazing chocolatier who really looks at chocolate as an art form. The flavors are exclusive to Kalla, and the designs on each chocolate mirror the relationships you will find within our floral assortment. We also have wine from the Napa Valley for those who really like to indulge. The Hill Family Estate is another terrific partner who shares the same passion for wine as we do for flowers. Congratulations on

your recent opening in Chicago. What do you think has contributed to the success of Kalla? Thank you! It’s been very exciting. I think the product is amazing and anyone who receives it loves it. So the product and experience are driving our success. The brand is aesthetically very different than anything else in the marketplace. People are drawn in by the look, and stay because of the experience. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER? Vanda orchids. They are very hard to come by, but we will be introducing them into our assortment this fall.

ARRANGEMENT? We handpicked unique varieties from our favorite farms and source them direct from the grower. We wait until they are at the perfect blooms stage and handcraft each arrangement using the best flowers from the batch. The finishing touch is always our special hydration lily that allows the recipient to easily water their arrangement. FINISH THIS SENTENCE: “I AM WORTHY _____.” Because I helped create a brand that people absolutely love.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FROM? I draw inspiration from everywhere. I love mixing and matching prints and patterns. I love the fashion industry. Flowers, like fashion, evolve each season, so I love infusing it into our assortment. WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE FOR MAKING A KALLA

ROHO KITCHEN

Chef Jorge Sazon of Roho Kitchen, 8338 W. State Road 84, Davie, FL, assisting students of his cooking class Fueled by passion, fire and spice, Roho Kitchen is a culinary gem garnished with flavorful dishes, infinitely diverse menus and interactive cooking courses that give hope to culinary challenged individuals. While some people are home at 7 p.m. on a Friday deciding what to wear for a night out on the town, I found myself giving in to an unspoken affair with soulful dishes and an intimate sense of community that dangerously resembled a familial rapport. Roho Kitchen’s cooking courses have become as well known as the Owner/Head Chef Jorge’s underground dinner events.

I watched slightly nervous as the kitchen filled up with consistent students who were anxious to start on the Portuguese dinner for the night. The large class separated into groups of three and began working on their respective dishes while enjoying a glass of wine. I moved cautiously toward the Portuguese custard station as my partner urged me to come closer and dive into cracking open the super cold eggs that were needed for the dish. Chef Jorge carefully guided each group through their dishes.

Dear Dreamer By: Alex Hanse

like every other Facebook status or every other tweet. Every other motivational speaker in the world has probably uttered these words, but let me take it a step further.

W

hen you leave this Earth what do you want to be remembered for? When you leave this Earth how will the people around you speak of you? Will they speak with admiration? Will they speak of you highly? Will they talk about the lives you changed and the people you have touched? What will happen when it is all over? I don’t want you leaving this Earth without living out your dreams. Your mission. Your goals. The things that you are truly passionate about.

I tell you this because of my mom—my mother that I lost to breast cancer. Her name was Jackie and before she passed away she wanted to open up a salon. She left this Earth before ever getting a chance to do so. I lost my mother in the sixth grade. For a young man, losing the woman I loved more than life itself did something to me. Instead of mourning, I celebrated. I celebrated because she was at peace. And now, I fight. I push. And I live life to inspire others to live out their dreams. You, the person reading this at this very moment, don’t leave this Earth without working tirelessly and effortlessly on your goals.

Be willing to make sacrifices. Be willing to go alone. Be willing to do things that no one else would be willing to do. Dreamer, I beg of you. If you do nothing else. Work hard. Work hard to not only change your own situations in your life, but the life of others. When you leave this Earth the world will speak about the amazing things you did. The time and effort you gave to others. The way you shared your compassion for others. The way you cared about so many and lived a completely selfless life. The way you smiled no matter the circumstance. This is what you have been charged to do. It won’t be perfect. It won’t be pretty. But at least if you were to leave this Earth you will know in your heart that you gave it your best shot and nothing but that. Dream. Act. Live. Do. Live to Thrive. Not just to Survive. Until next time.

But maybe this sounds
