A Season to be bold

Editors-At-L arge David Michael Lais Pontes

S

ummer is such an amazing season to be bold. I can honestly say that the creation of this issue required that everyone involved with the magazine be nothing else other than bold. We took a few risks. We spoke up for ourselves and we literally had the honor of seeing our visions come to fruition. It was the perfect metaphor for summer. We experienced a season of a boldness, changes and risks. Hopefully this issue like our other issues will speak to not just you but your dreams as well. It is our sincerest desire that we uplift and celebrate our readers the best way that we know how by giving interviews that motivate you, information that you can actually use and creative presentations that you can enjoy. We are certainly in our summer haze with this issue and as Swim Week begins in Miami and remnants of summer subside. We hope that this issue will make it easier to carry that boldness with you into the new season. We are here to encourage you and celebrate you always. If you would like to be featured or interviewed, please reach out to our editorial department worthy@worthy-magazine.com You are worthy,

THE WORD PLUS SIZE HAS A DIFFERENT MEANING IN THE INDUSTRY. BUT I THINK HOW WE VIEW THE WORD PLUS SIZE IS WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE NOT THE INDUSTRY’S STANDARD OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED PLUS SIZE. IT SHOULD NOT BE A NEGATIVE THING TO BE CONSIDERED PLUS SIZE. - HAYLEY HASSELHOFF

Actress, designer and plus-size model, Hayley Hasselhoff surpasses our definition of real beauty by embracing who she is. “I think the most important thing is self-love and understanding that it is ok to be different.” When we spoke to the beautiful powerhouse, she emphasized the importance of accepting

She also had an interesting opinion about the modeling industry’s definition of plus-size. “I think that people get industry and street standards confused. Broadway authority, entrepreneur, mentor, wife and actress, the woman behind the character of OWN’s hit series is so much more than a villain you love to hate. Angela Robinson rises above the backlash that results from her masterful command of her character, Veronica Harrington - a wealthy socialite who is fiercely protective of her family. Veronica is known for stopping at nothing to keep up appearances. Most notably, Veronica is known for refusing to accept that her son is gay.

I am worthy because God says I am. -

ANGELIA ROBINSON

T

here is no denying that Veronica is a character who effortlessly pulls you into a storyline that literally stirs up every emotion in its viewers. Angela shared with Worthy what she enjoys about playing such a complex character. The one thing that we loved to hear was that she takes the good compliments just as well as she takes the criticisms. “My skin has to be a little thicker when you play a character that people hate. You get called ugly and fat and all kinds of names.” Nevertheless, Angela says that there are still some things that she loves about playing Veronica. “I love that she is so quick with her words. I’m not so quick,” Angela said.

All Roads Lead To Florida Many fans of the Have’s and Have Not’s don’t know that Angela is a native of Jacksonville. To this day the town still has her heart. “I love the sense of community. We are very involved in our community church when we come home. When I come home people are supportive they aren’t star struck.” Angela moved to New York fueled by a simple dream. “I only knew three people. I just knew I had a dream to be on Broadway.”

When I come home people are supportive they aren’t star struck. WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

Since then, Angela has worked on Broadway, off Broadway and on stages throughout the U.S. and abroad. She has been apart of productions that include The Color Purple with Fantasia, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On!. Off-Broadway productions: Radiant Baby, Call the Children Home, and City Center’s ENCORES! She has participated in National Tours of The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt. Other television/film credits include Law & Order: SVU and Another Bed. Only 15 years later and Angela has not only conquered Broadway but has also taken on the role of mentor. Angela and her husband Scott

founded the WhiteRobin Group in 2008, which is a consulting firm for aspiring and seasoned artists. Providing training, inspiration and direction via acting workshops, private acting coaching, blogs and mentorship programs.

cecently, Himmarshee Public House, 201 SW 2nd Street Fort Lauderdale, launched a new menu including 16 new dishes as well as new craft cocktails that are themed with an old American inspiration. We had the opportunity to test out a few of the new dishes. The new menu is undoubtedly foodie friendly. The menu includes additions to snacks and bites such as sweet and sour pork belly, the newest salad added to the menu is our ner favorite. It is a kale salad with mandarin oranges, toasted almonds, golden raisins and honey -almond vinaigrette, slow cooked meatballs with san marzano, whipped ricotta and local basil; sweet and sour pork braised duroc pork belly, cool watermelon WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

salad; bacon wrapped shrimp , which is made with local shrimp, smocked bacon, honey sirecha glaze; wynwood pop porter braised short rib with mash potatoes and friend oninons; maple burnon salmon served with mashed potatoes and market greens; Bell& Evans Chicken, to name a few. The latest additions also include changes to the restauraunt’s happy hour menu as well. The menu is available Monday through Friday at 4 to 7 p.m. with special Pink Thursday Ladies night beginning at 9 p.m. where the restaraunt raffles off a couture designer gift to one lucky lady. We can not get enough of the latest additon to the cocktail menu, The smoked Old Fashioned, which is made

with Makers 46 , Pimento Bitters, topped with Armerena Cherry, sugar cube and orange peel and is served in a hicory smoked glass. Himmarshee Public House is without a doubt the champion of bacon and their newest pork belly dish with watermelon salad was one of favorite dishes to sample. It was followed closely by the restuaraunt’s meatball and ricotta dish. The fresh basil that the dish was paired with was the perfect pairing to a flavorful dish.

THE ULTIMATE EATING + EXERCISE GUIDE FOR FAST WEIGHT LOSS + BODY SHAPING

By Teresa Cutter Thehealthychef.com

When it comes to weight loss, it’s all about switching your routine to burn more energy, revving up your metabolism, and eating the right kind of nutrientdense foods for your activity level. For weight loss to work effectively, it’s important that you need to look at this as a lifestyle, not a diet, a lifestyle that will ultimately help you become leaner, fitter and healthier for the rest of your life. Most of us gain weight for THREE simple reasons: 1 We eat too much. 2 We eat the wrong kinds of foods. 3 We don’t move enough. Nutrition and exercise isn’t as WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

complicated as it is often made out to be. There’s a sense of ‘food anxiety’ among many people who are trying their best to do the right thing. When it comes down to it, we’re all different and it’s not a onesize-fits-all solution. My best advice is to keep it simple and customize your own diet and exercise program based on your unique needs and body shape. TOP TIPS: 1 SET A PLAN Losing weight and becoming healthier doesn’t happen overnight. It takes about 12 weeks to see significant changes in your body and health. 2 GET A MEDICAL CHECKUP Before changing your diet and starting any fitness regime, get

checked out by your medical practitioner, that way you’ll be able to rectify any deficiencies and hormone imbalances such as high insulin levels that can block fat burning in the body. 3 CREATE THE RIGHT FAT LOSS ENVIRONMENT Do your own fridge audit - throw out all the junk, packets of chips, processed foods, and cereal boxes filled with air and sugar. If you keep your kitchen free of junk, you can’t eat it. 4 GO MEDITERANIAN A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that a Mediterranean style diet combined with low carb is one of the best ways of losing fat. The diet is characterized by high intakes

suggests that a Mediterranean style diet combined with low carb is one of the best ways of losing fat. The diet is characterized by high intakes of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and plenty of fish. 5 LOVE YOUR VEGGIES I always keep a few bags of frozen veggies in the freezer so if I’m pushed for time and too tired to cook I can easy cook them up for dinner which is a lot healthier then ordering a take away pizza. If you get home late or missed a meal, rather than going to bed on a full stomach, something like a protein shake made with almond milk and berries can do the trick. 6 GET ACTIVE Exercise increases your daily energy expenditure, which allows your body to burn more body fat. Choose activities you enjoy and do them regularly. GO-TO MEAL PLAN FOR BUSY WOMEN BREAKFAST Choose 1 Strawberries + Cream Smoothie Blend 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1 ½ cups almond milk, 2 Tablespoons of protein powder in a blender until smooth – Drink and enjoy.

or ½ cup Greek Style yoghurt topped with fresh berries, LSA and a little honey. Snack Handful roasted almonds 1 matcha green tea LUNCH Hummus with raw vegetables to dip Blend 1 tin drained organic chickpeas with a little lemon, 2 tablespoons tahini, pinch of salt and ¼ cup of iced water until smooth. Serve with raw garden vegetables and enjoy. Or Detox Energy Salad Place 2 large handfuls torn romaine lettuce into a serving bowl and top with 1 quartered avocado, 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds, 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds, 1 tablespoon goji berries and roasted almonds. Drizzle with cold pressed olive oil and a little aged balsamic then enjoy. Afternoon snack 1 Protein shake + coconut water DINNER Cauliflower fried Rice with ginger, turmeric and roasted tamari almonds. Finely grate 1 cauliflower so it looks like rice. Stirfry in a large deep pan with 1 tablespoon each grated ginger, turmeric, coconut oil and coriander root. Fold in chopped

parsley, mint, 2 eggs, tamari soy sauce and fresh chopped coriander leaf. Cook for 5 minutes until eggs are cooked. Serve and enjoy garnished with roasted almonds or cashew nuts. Or Green Pea + Spinach Risotto Sautee 1-diced onion with ¼ cup risotto rice and 2 tablespoons olive oil for 1 minute. Add 2 cups of vegetable or chicken stock and cook, stirring regularly until rice is tender and creamy. Blanch 2 cups of frozen peas and puree half in a blender with 2 handfuls baby spinach leaves. Add green puree to the risotto and fold through the whole green peas that are left. Add more stock if needed to loosen. Serve topped with grated parmesan and enjoy. EXERCISE PLAN A combination of cardiovascular, resistance and flexibility training will ensure overall fitness and body shaping for your individual body type.

(stretching) will increase recovery, create long lean muscles and encourage the release of toxins in the body.

The cardio will get you fit and help you lose body fat. Resistance training with increase your metabolic rate as well as shape and tone your body to look amazing!

AZIE TESAFI “I LOVE PLAYING NADINE. SHE IS SO STRONG TOUGH AND CAPABLE” With a reoccurring role on one of television’s most culturally diverse shows, Azie Tesfai has not allowed the overwhelming success to alter her focus. Fueled by talent and passion, Azie has placed a significant amount of her energy into educating the public about different cultures.

“I would like to see everyone live life with open hearts. Everyone deserves to be treated with empathy and compassion,” she said.

While she might have been raised in Los Angeles, Azie still has family that lives in Eritrea and Ethiopia. Azie’s culturally diverse heritage strongly influenced her appreciation for her life in LA. The actress has been very open about how her first trip to visit her family members resulted in her deep appreciation of food and everything that her family provided for her.

What she loves about playing Nadine “I love her. She is so strong, tough and capable, which she has to be since she is the only female detective. She is always trying to prove herself and I love it. She is bad ass.”

Unexpected pockets of motivation happen to be the thing that most editors live on. It is for that reason that we can not get enough of Mantrabands. They are a super chic accessory that packs a powerful punch by providing just the right motivational words. As we run around for most of the day we love that even our accessories keep us focused on what matters.

Celsius has been our go-to source for energy and calorie burning for the summer. One scoop of the Celsius pre-work out formula and we were able to endure our grueling work out not to mention the rest of the day. We love the idea that we can burn calories while getting more energy. This is the perfect answer for any editor or person on the go. We will be using it all year.

These headphones were put to the test time and time again by our editorial team and we are happy to report that they live up to the hype. The sound quality on these bluetooth waterproof headphones make the headphones comparable to all other headphones out on the market. From our rigourous summer workout plan to a long day packed with unexpected movements we were happy to see that Soul Run Free Pro could keep up. We can honestly say that the headphones will be another item that we continue to use even after the summer but we have no idea how we would’ve survived without them.

The songs currently on our playlist all seem to have heavy hypnotic beats that seem to capture the spirit of the summer perfectly leaving us in an inescapable summer haze. David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj - Hey Mama If Nicki’s verse doesn’t get you going, we don’t know what will. We love the tribal vibe of the song. If it were up to us this song would be getting played at every swim week show we went to. Janelle Mopnae ft Jidenna - Yoga This sexy and unexpected song of the summer has captured our hearts and chakras. We love when an artist knows when to evolve and how to do it well. It still has a nice groove but that beat paired with that groove just says summer to us. Mirnada Lambert- Little red wagon We are suckers for a good song having a good video. It makes us love the song even more. The moment we saw Miranda’s new look and her signature smile we were hooked. At this point, we are pretty certain that she could sing the contents of a phone book and we would feel it was a hit record. This song, however, is a hit from the sound to Miranda’s vintage summer look. Florida George Line - Sippin on fire This song for us kind of captures our sentiments on summer romances. They are often forbidden, hot and dangerous if you get too close. The summer hit is a nice change from the duo’s often upbeat sound. Mckinney Griffin- A rock and hard place One of our favorite emerging artists to follow seems to never disappoint us. What is summer without a little confusion and heartache? Mckinney captures it and pairs with a beautiful melody that is stuck in our heads. Ellis Martin- You’re Kinda Crazy Another artist we have our eye on has an album that is filled with catchy musical gems. You’re kinda crazy just sounds like summer to us.
