FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Worthy Ones,

Real Beauty

Many people ask why I named the magazine Worthy and what Worthy is all about. I felt like the beauty issue was the ideal platform for me to elaborate on the magazine’s origins. Our loyal readers know that the inspiration came to me as I was listening to one of my favorite gospel songs by Cece Winans, “Worthy.” And even more know that I felt like I found confirmation for the name on the final episode of the “Oprah Winfrey” show. It was the last paragraph of her words that spoke to the insecurities in me that seemed to define the person I was up until that moment. “We often block our own blessings because we don’t feel inherently good enough or smart enough or pretty enough or worthy enough. You’re worthy because you are born and because you are here. Your being here, your being alive makes worthiness your birthright. You alone are enough,” Oprah Winfrey. I instantly recalled all the moments that I sold myself short because of doubt. I thought of how 8| Worthy-magazine.com

many great opportunities I missed because I counted myself out, and for a moment, I wondered where I would’ve been if I had been more kind to myself. What opportunities would the universe have given me? I say all this to say that I find that the most beautiful people are the ones who are happy with themselves. Their happiness and confidence has not been built upon tearing someone else down or pointing out their faults, which we all have. The most beautiful people, to me, are the ones who believe that they are good enough, smart enough and worthy.

a person who upon first glance is extremely attractive and then the worst thing happens, they begin to speak. Instantaneously that person becomes less and less attractive.

It was in that final lesson on my favorite talk show that I knew what the goal for Worthy Magazine would be. Worthy Magazine would be a multicultural publication for people 21-and-up designed to inspire, affirm and celebrate our readers with a focus on reshaping the socially accepted standards of beauty. The reshaping would focus largely on internalizing the definition beauty instead of getting caught up on the physical.

Beauty is heritage, beauty is self perception, beauty is kindness. We are all capable of great beauty.

It’s a powerful thing to consider that your mind can alter something so permanent as your physical appearance but it can. I know everyone has noticed or met

Essentially I am saying that I am learning from rather difficult personal experience that the love we give ourselves can be seen by others. So hopefully this issue will be a nice supplement to aid you in being kind to yourself. Let the stories of the featured actors, entrepreneurs and dreamers inspire you. Let the brief calls to action motivate you.

New Year’s Eve Style

The Holiday New Year Social

One question I get a lot around this time of year is, “David, what can I wear to get dressed up for the holidays?”. Quite often, I quickly reply “Just depends on where you’re going.” Here’s my comprehensive list of Holiday Dresses!

The Year has wound down and so has the temperature. If you’re going to countdown to the new year on a rooftop social as I do ever year, I recommend a classicJohn Galliano number or a bright figure-flattering number from Virgos Lounge. Rules for New Years. --Drama is always a good thing.

The Holiday Gala I love drama particularly around holiday time. I don’t mean embarrassing family moments. I’m talking about full-fledged fashion drama. Don’t be afraid of bright colors, ornate dresses and a classic silhouette and vintage vibe. The Holiday Family Dinner

--Flirty sparkly dresses are essential on dream date. -- During the holidays, wear those bold colors you are nervous about. You finally have an occassion to do so.

If you just so happen to be the hostess for your family’s dinner, you already know the food quality must be up to par. Moreover, your wardrobe as well! Alice+Olivia deliver a breath-taking high low hemline full-skirted dress for all your entertaining needs.

Virgos Lounge

The Holi-Date You finally get asked out by that cute guy that works in some place you visit frequently. It just so happens to be Christmas Eve and you’re feeling festive. So what to wear? I always run back to one of my favorites, Oscar De La Renta. He will never fail you. Thank you Mr. De La Renta for always creating the most beautiful clothing.

Haute Couture Ateliers The Artisans of Fashion

Behind every fashion designer is an army of talent. Detailed craftsmanship may be considered a thing of a past, but within each couture piece it is alive and well. Haute Couture Ateliers-The Artisans of Fashion is a book that highlights the hidden talents that exist within fashion. Written by HÊlène Farnault with a foreword by Hubert de Givency, this book will give you a new outlook on how you view fashion. Images show the components that make up a couture piece in detail, starting with the top couture designers and every job along the way. The undercover work of artisans such as lace makers, weavers, jewelers, feather workers, and embroiderers are exposed and examined 10| Worthy-magazine.com

throughout the book. The craftsmen, who are typically in the background of fashion, are brought to the spotlight within the books glossy photos shot by Paris based photographer, Alexis Lecomte. The images highlight the backbone of each design and the details that tend to go un-noticed. It shows the cohesive thought of the designer and the artisan who create works of art. This book is a conversation piece that belongs on every fashionistas coffee table, to share the beauty within the construction of couture garments.

Rowing Blazers The world of rowing is one that is foreign to most people. It is a sport that holds great heritage and culture with some of the oldest traditions in the world. Part of this tradition is focused on the blazer. An article of clothing that we view as an American icon, was first created for the Oxford and Cambridge rowing teams. It was both their uniform

and a way to keep warm in the chilly waters year round. The authentic striped, trimmed and badged blazers hold a greater history than just being a staple piece in the modern wardrobe. Each rowing blazers contains a story and a tradition passed down from year to year. The book Rowing Blazers by Jack Carlson takes a look at the importance of the blazer around the world. For three years Carlson and photographer F.E Castleberry traveled to some of the most historic clubs and prestigious campuses to show first-hand the weight that blazers hold on the rowing community. He listens to the stories, traditions, and the history of the blazer as told by some of the most prominent oarsmen and women. The photography by Castleberry captures the vibrant colors, badges, and the wear and tear that these blazers have endured over the years. Carlson, a championship rower himself, shares his own personal experiences with a rowing blazer and knows all the questions to ask to fellow rowers in order to truly get the story of each and every team. This book appreciates the fashion, history, and the athleticism of rowing and a worldwide community that shares the bond of the blazers.

A Guide to healthy hair with Dilcia’s Haircare Perched in the pulse of Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood Florida is a haircare gem called Dilcia’s Haircare (4306 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, FL 33021) that has been my home since my sophomore year of high school. The owner, Dilcia, plays the role of caring mother to all of her clients. “There is a difference between hairstyles and haircare,” she said with sincerity. One step into Dilcia’s Haircare Salon and you are met with something that surpasses a polished image. You are greeted by a

space that is packed with culture and heritage. “Lia, make sure you get pictures of the dolls. Those are very important,” Dilcia warned with a mother-like authority in her voice. “Do you want to know why she doesn’t have a face, Lia?” I watch her closely and nod my head as she begins to speak. “It’s because the women in the Dominican Republic are so diverse. Everyone looks different.” The diverse faceless clay dolls are placed through out the product wall behind Dilcia’s welcome desk in her salon. “There are a lot of hairstylists who are willing to just style your hair and send you out. But that isn’t what we do here,” Yovanna Aguasvivas (which translates to ‘living water’) chimed in. “We want to make your hair healthy. We deal with clients who have lost their hair due to extensions or getting their hair over-relaxed. So hair care is

a must for us. Our motto is that this (hair salon) is an arsenal that belongs to the clients.” Much like the dolls that fill Dilcia’s salon, her clients are all very diverse. “ We treat every client like family and we work will all kinds of hair: natural, relaxed everything. We have had clients for 20 years.” So with such a loyal customer base, the mother-daughter-duo wanted to share a few pieces of advice about haircare with Worthy readers. 1. Know your stylist “There are three differ ent types of stylists: The ones who only do your hair for money, the ones who do hairstyles and don’t treat your hair and stylists who do hair care. A stylists who practices hair care will keep your hair trimmed regularly, offer deep conditioning treatments as well as protein treatments on a consistent basis,” according to Yovanna. 2. It’s all about energy and it all takes time “Your hair is like a plant it has energy and it takes time to heal and rebuild.” 3. Trends are ok, but haircare comes first “While you are keeping up with the joneses, you have to make sure that you are treating your hair in-between the coloring and extensions.”

Dear Dreamer

Founder of Foolies Inc. Alexander Hanse words of encouragement to the dreamers of the world

The other day I had one of the toughest moments of my life. I failed. It wasn’t a big failure, but it was a moment of failure. That moment completely shattered my mood and my levels of insecurity was at a new time high. I am a young brother who strives for perfection. This is my gift and curse. This sense of pride that I have can also be a big enemy in my life. But, here is what I learned about that moment of failure. In that moment of failure I realized my true passion for life. I realized that sometimes I beat myself up way more than I should. I realize that I care about the people around me and I just want to make others happy. I also learned that in order to truly reach a better place in life I will have to continue to fail. Also, the reason I failed was because I didn’t have a plan. I tried to show up and “wing it.” You know those moments. Hoping that you can pull something out of your behind and it turns out to be great. Or, that excuse we all have that we do things better last minute. In order to be great in our lives, careers, for our friends, and family we can’t do things last minute. If we truly care about our craft 22| Worthy-magazine.com

we must plan ahead. It doesn’t have to be a perfect plan, but it may help us from failing as quickly as we normally would. Failure has such an ugly feel and connotation behind it. Why would we ever strive for more if we didn’t fail? Why would we ever want to get stronger, or faster, or do anything better if we didn’t fail and fail miserably. Failure is a beautiful thing. It pushes us. It challenges us. It rips the ceiling off of our mindsets and allows us to see that there are things we just can’t do. It gives a new reason to live. It takes us out of comfort zones and lifts us into an entirely new dimension. Failure doesn’t do this for you? Well, you have looked at failure all wrong. You have taken failure and let it control you. You have let it bully you and push you around. You have allowed failure to play a big role in the reason why you are not living out your dreams. They say to be an expert at anything you need about 10,000 hours. Have you even put more than 10-20 hours towards a dream in mind? And if you did put

that much time and energy into your dream do you think that is enough? Stop looking at everyone around you and their accomplishments and wondering why you haven’t gotten anywhere in your life. Stop letting failure hang over your head like a dark cloud!

Failure can change your life for the better. Failing Fast can then show you how to turn a couple cents into a billion dollar industry. Have you failed at something today? It may be time to embrace the pain, and the heartache. It is time to realize that the failure you are going through today won’t tell your story at the end of the road. Greatness is approaching your future quicker than you know it. But, we must fail in order to see that greatness manifest in our lives.

Dawn Dickson has done what most entrepreneurs dream and pray for. She has created something unique and necessary. In a world that is saturated with an overwhelming need to be different, it seems that the consumer market is immersed in a culture that constantly creates unnecessary things cloaked in great branding. Oftentimes, it can take a while to figure out if you will actually use what you are buying. However a purchase from Dawn Dickson is a purchase of necessity cloaked in style. Does this sound familiar? An important event is taking place. Not a casual event but an occasion in which style is paramount. You break out your best heels sensible and cute. However, the event has run longer than you planned. By the end of the event, you find yourself fighting back the discomfort that is inescapable due to the fact that your comfy flip flops couldn’t fit in your bag. Far too often most women find themselves in a very similar situation. Dawn has created a convenient solution for those inconvenient moments. Flat Out of Heels was created in February 2011. Dawn found herself in a similar situation. She found herself in the heart of Miami attending an event in South Beach in six-inch heels. She credits a fair portion of her success to her ability to fundraise and celebrity endorsements. “I think that the celebrity endorsements have really helped with getting new customers and maintaining returning customers.”

that moment that Dawn decided that she would take matters into her own hands. It is that personal experience that makes Flat out of Heels so unique. Flat Out of Heels are rollable ballet style flats that can be used as an emergency flat and worn for everyday use. In addition to being durable, the shoes are readily available via vending machines that are located in places where those moments of unspeakable pain and inconvenience are likely to occur. Dawn is also the manufacturer of the vending machines as well. The process “We keep an eye out for what is

In the future, Dawn sees her company growing into an even more established national brand and potentially becoming a profitable sale. “I would l like to be able to sale the company in five years. It would be amazing to have a board position.”

D DANIA’S

Beautifulh Heritage

The “Devious Maids” actress opens up to Worthy about everything INCLUDING the unique meaning behind her twins names, her hopes for the future and she also shares her definiton of true beauty .

42| Worthy-Magazine.com

Dania Ramirez The essential ingredients needed to conjure the ideal actress, in an industry that has a surplus of talent and beauty, are still a mystery even to the most avid enthusiasts and critics. Whatever they are, it is our humble opinion that Dania Ramirez has the “it factor” in spades. From her beauty, amazing personality all the way back to the humble beginnings that humanize her and make it easier for her fans (Daniacs) to forgive her for being so close to perfection even after having beautiful twin babies daughter Gaia Jissel and son John Aether whom she loves to dance with in her free time. Dania has a loyal following that has been with her for quite some time. Admittedly, the editors at the magazine feel the same way and love seeing her on ‘Devious Maids.” So as I prepared for an interview with the woman who has rubbed elbows with Halle Berry as a worthy adversary, Callisto in the film “X-Men,” and closed out the final season of one my favorite TV shows of all time, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” my mind was a fuzzy flurry of nerves and excitement. Once pleasantries were exchanged over the phone, Dania immediately warned me, “I am a talker so just let me know if you need me to pull it back in.” And while most people being interviewed think those few words are a bad thing, for a journalist, those words hold a promise of an amazing interview. She did not disappoint. On her “Devious Maids” role

Lifetime’s “Devious Maids” follows a talented group of Latina actresses who play the hardworking maids to the rich and the famous in Beverly Hills. The secrets that they unearth are as seductive as they are juicy and Dania commands the small screen as Rosie the lovable, tenacious hopeless romantic, who is full of surprises. “I was originally attracted to Rosie’s story,” Dania said. “Her family values tell such an immigrant story full of love and perseverance.” Beautiful heritage Dania did not leave the Dominican Republic to come to the United States until she was 10 years old. Her parents who had left for the U.S. when Dania was six months old, left her in the care of her grandmother. Dania has shared in other interviews that despite not having a real roof on the house, running water or electricity, most of the time that her relatives found a way to make the most out of what they had. They always found a way to have fun and laugh, play, sing, dance, eat. While she may find her character’s story relatable, there are still some differences between the two ladies that Dania appreciates as an actress. “The season finale was one of my favorites because it showed how conflicted Rosie can be and the friendships between all the maids was really prevalent in that episode. Plus, I got to have another wedding even if it was in character.” Since she was not able to share details about the next season, Dania shared what she would like to see happen with her character for

the next season of “Devious Maids.” “I would love to see how she will deal with the news of her “dead” husband being alive. She has gotten to a place where not only has she moved passed on but found love with “Meester Spence” but knowing Rosie, I am sure that her child “Miguel” and her loyalty will keep her conflicted. I also love the chance to play those great comedic moments that the writers are so brilliant at creating for Rosie. She gets lost in translation, which make for effortless jokes.” Bright future The point of our conversation where her enthusiasm is impossible to miss is when she discusses her future projects. Dania will be making her first debut as a producer alongside her husband for the upcoming film “Talbot County.” “This is the first film I produced. My husband, Bev Land, wrote and directed it and his brother “Donald Land” and my sister from another mother “Crystal Hunt” executive produced it. We made it a family affair. I play Isabella Cruz. It’s a film based on a true legend about “The Talbot County Werewolf ” That’s all I can say right now. I am also in Canada now filming “1st Response” I play Camilla Torres. An EMT who’s Ambulance gets highjacked. It’s a thriller.” Her advice to Worthy Readers about their dreams “Will them into existence. It’s the only way they can happen and no will make them come true but you.”

In my free time I like to: Play with my babies

and Dance.

Real Beauty is: Beauty

start s with how you feel and so I guess It only happens with you . Youhave to have self love. Then it comes out of your pores . My twins’ names: Gaia

means earth and Aether mean fresh air. I wanted them to have names that mean something and are complete together. My new year’s resolution is: You’ll have to

wait for that one!

The Unbreakable “I am worthy because I have been given an opportunity, and I am hopeful,” RJ replied when I lead with the question that I typically reserve for the end of the interview. The star of “Breaking Bad,” AMC’s wildly popular series about a cancer-diagnosed chemistry teacher-turned meth dealer, has garnered a loyal following for RJ from his role on the show as Walter Jr. But it is his personal story that most RJ Fans are truly in love with. The actor was diagnosed with cerebal palsy at the age of three. However, RJ began acting at the age of 10. He worked the background for one of Disney’s most popular shows, “Hannah Montanna” and Showtime’s “Weeds.” It all served as preparation for his role on “Breaking Bad,” according to RJ. To hear the young actor speak of his acting experience and his future plans is to hear a young man filled with hope unrestricted by labels. “Just because you have a disability does not mean that you are dis-

RJ Mitte

abled,” Rj said. “It does not define who I am or what I am capable of.” Throughout the years, RJ has been an inspiration to his peers around the world by championing his disability in hopes of removing the stigma associated with handicaps. “I guess the goal is to make a difference and show those with disabilities and those who may not be familiar with that community that everyone is the same. It is important to talk to someone as a person. I just feel

like if you can encourage anyone, you should.”

By bringing awareness to those who suffer from life threatening illness, RJ has engaged in public speaking on his own issues with bullying and prejudice and serves as the official Ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Childrens Hospitals. He’s also a board member of SAG working with their Pacer & I AM PWD (Person with Disability,) which are organizations that seek equal opportunities for those with chronic ailments beyond normal illness. The actor’s call to action is the same for those living with a disability and those who are merely dreamers. “Don’t be afraid to change your life. You have the ability to change. People just choose to not believe.”

Inside “Camp X-Ray”

BREAKING OUT LANE GARRISON HAS OVERCOME HIS GREATEST OBSTACLE AND HAS NOTHING BUT PRAISES TO SING ABOUT STARRING IN A NEW INDEPENDENT FILM WITH HOLLYWOOD’S ‘IT’ GIRL KRISTEN STEWART Lane Garrison is in his own lane and he doesn’t mind sharing his story. “One thing you will notice about me is that I am raw,” Lane said. “You will know all of my flaws and all of my strengths.” Lane, who has had a steady acting career, gained a rather loyal following on Fox’s hit series “Prison Break” playing David “Tweener” Apolskis. A DUI (Driving Under the Influence) in 2006, which resulted in a death of one of Lane’s passenge. The DUI charge and death abruptly halted his career. Lane served 22 months in prison for his DUI conviction. “Aside from my parents dying, learning to forgive myself was the hardest thing I had to overcome,’ he said. “Anyone who knows me, knows that I would give the shirt off of my back if it would help someone. So learning to forgive myself was probably the hardest thing to do.” The actor was able to reference his time spent in over eight different prisons for his role in “Camp X-Ray” where he stars opposite Kristen Stewart as a prison guard name Randy at a camp in Guantanamo Bay. Randy finds himself in a love triangle with ‘Cole’ (Kristen), a newly enlisted prison guard and ‘Ali’ (Peyman Maadi), a self-proclaimed innocent detainee at the prison. It was a must-see at this years Sundance Film Festival. “I think that it may have

been Kristen’s best performance yet. My character is pretty detached,” he said. “He has seen the worst of the worst and that was similar to my experience. I met a lot of desensitized men while I was in prison. In the end, I am so blessed that I get a second chance and that I get to do a film that can really change lives by telling a story that doesn’t get told very often.” Making the most out of his second chance, Lane is also slated to star in the CW’s “The Messengers” and “Breaking Bad” spin-off “Better Call Saul.” However, there wasn’t much that he could share on the new roles. Needless to say. We are pretty excited to see him in both roles.

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I LOVE OTHER PEOPLE AND I TREAT OTHER PEOPLE EQUALLY.” -LANE GARRISON

“I think this is her best role yet.” - Lane Garrison in reference to Kristen’s role in “Camp X-Ray.”
