letter from Our Presiding Bishop

Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, Sr.
raise the Lord to everyone and welcome to the 71st Annual Holy Convocation and the 61st National Youth for Christ Convention of The Way of the Cross Church of Christ, International. It gives me deep pleasure to welcome you to this Assembly of God’s mighty people; to come together to magnify and praise the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am excited already to think what will happen when ALL of God’s people come together in Heaven. The exemplification of the Holy Spirit will be felt by all who are present because the Spirit of God is contagious. For it is not by power nor by might, but by the Spirit of God. I write this letter with bittersweet emotions as the Presiding Bishop for thirty years of this great organization. I am so thankful that God has blessed me to serve you for these many years. I am also thankful that God has someone who is capable and ready to take the helm of this ship and carry on. I pray that the next leader will listen to the voice of the Lord and continue to lead God’s people forward. Your future is better than your past. I want to take time to thank our Convocation Chairman and his staff for their tireless efforts and hard work to make this Convocation the best. I cannot emphasize how we appreciate all you do. I am sure I speak the minds and sentiments of everyone. Again, we thank you, Bishop Carl Miller, and may God continue to bless you for all you do for His people. In closing, may I unequivocally give my appreciation for the love, encouragement and support everyone has given me down through the years. I love The Way of the Cross Church, it’s doctrine and all of God’s people. I am not going anywhere. My love and support shall continue. This year’s Theme, “Cease Not to Fight...Your Goals Are Just Ahead”, is so appropriate for this year’s Convocation. The Way of the Cross Church is on a firm foundation, and the storms of the past have not bent nor moved it. I take this opportunity to exalt you to stay on the foundation that has withstood the forces of satan for seventy-one years and will continue until the coming of the Lord Jesus for His church. Luke 6:47-48 says, “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.” May we remember the last message Bishop Henry C. Brooks preached at New Bethel Way of the Cross Church in New York City; his text was taken from Psalms 11:3 - “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” I offer my thanks for the support, encouragement and love that has been shown to me by the Pastors and you, my dear friends, in my tenure as the Presiding Bishop of The Way of the Cross Church of Christ, International. May the God of Heaven grant you your heart’s desire and remember, “The Way of the Cross Leads Home.”
Your Humble Servant,
Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, Sr. Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, Sr., D.D. Presiding Bishop

ehold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! (Psalm 133:1). I greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and welcome you to the 71st Holy Convocation of THE WAY OF THE CROSS CHURCH OF CHRIST, INTERNATIONAL. It is with great expectation that I prepare to dwell together with my brothers and sisters in Christ for one week in the presence of God. I pray that all of us will come to this Convocation expecting a move of God like never before. Every year we grow stronger and more focused on the purpose God has for us. He has made it clear to us that, in addition to salvation, God wants us to be in unity, with no division. It is my prayer that we will leave this Convocation excited about the move of God. In these last days we must continue to cry loud and spare not. The world is changing right before our eyes. The moral standard of the Executive Branch, the Congress and the Supreme Court has dropped to an all-time low, and it is past time for the people of God to come together and take a stand. I pray that this Convocation will be our start. God bless you!

lessings To Each Of You In The Wonderful Name Of Jesus Christ! It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending this 71st Holy Convocation of the Way of the Cross Church of Christ, International in Herndon, VA…
“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;...” -Thessalonians 1:2-3 -
Congratulations also to the National Youth for Christ Department as they celebrate their 61st Convention, thanking God for all the blessings He has showered down upon us as a body of believers through the years. I would like to extend my thanks to the Convocation Committee and organizers who have labored so hard to ensure the success of this convocation. Efforts like yours make our being here a wonderful experience. May you be rewarded abundantly for your labor of love. I want to encourage everyone to hold on to the Faith and encourage one another in Christ. Every one of us can make a difference in someone’s life. We can patiently encourage, strengthen those around us, and in turn strengthen the church. In addition, as I so often say, “stand firm on the Apostolic Doctrine and the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. Stay with God, and He will continue to be with you. I pray each of you have a wonderful time in the Glory of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! Let’s enjoy Jesus and one another on this glorious convocation week. I love you, and as always, you and your families are in my prayers. The Master’s Servant, Bishop Earley Dillard

reetings to all of the Saints of God. Welcome to the 71st General Holy Convocation and 61st National Youth for Christ Convention of The Way of the Cross Church of Christ, International. God has allowed us one more chance to come together and fellowship. We are anticipating a great move of God this week. Thank you Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, our Presiding Bishop, for laboring over thirty (30) years as our leader. We all love and appreciate the many sacrifices that have been made to bring us to this milestone in the history of The Way of the Cross Church. What an awesome joy it is to see our Presiding Bishop-Elect, Bishop Alphonzo D. Brooks, transition into his new assignment. This is the first time in our history that the current Presider will pass the torch and anointing on to his successor. A father’s dream is for his son to follow in his footsteps. Our Founder, Bishop Henry C. Brooks, laid a great foundation upon which Bishop Alphonzo D. Brooks will continue to build and carry us to higher heights and new levels of ministry. As you come this week with a sense of expectation, please participate and watch as we all experience an impartation from the Holy Spirit. Great singing, worship and preaching will usher us into the presence of the Lord. Whatever we can do to make your stay and celebration better, please let us know. In His Service,

Our Founder H
enry Chauncey Brooks was born on July 17, 1896
in Franklinton, NC to Robert and Frances Brooks. After the untimely death of his father, he moved to Washington, DC in 1912 at the age of 16 with his sister Leora Hamilton. Unbeknownst to him, the move to Washington would be the road the Lord planned for his salvation. In 1917, he entered the military serving in World War I in the United States Navy. After an honorable discharge in 1919, he returned to Kittrell, NC to marry his fiancée of two years, Willie Shaw Dunston on Christmas Day. From this union, they were blessed with twelve children; Isabel B. Ford, John H. Brooks, Essie B. Lindsay, Ruth B. Lancaster, Joseph Brooks, Bertha B. Simon, Evelean Cook, Bernard Brooks, Willie R. Brooks, Naomi Postell, Olivia Yelder, and Alphonzo D. Brooks. In 1925, there was a revival at 31st and H Street, NW Washington, DC which was conducted by Elder Robert Watts of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Bishop R. C. Lawson was the Presiding Bishop at that time. Henry’s sister informed him of the revival and tried to instruct him on the baptism in Jesus Name. He did not accept her instruction and was determined to attend the revival to attack the preacher. After studying the word, he and his niece Rose Belle Howard attended the service. When the preacher made the altar call, Henry put his hand up to ask a question. However before he could speak, God took hold of his tongue. The preacher asked him if he wanted to be saved, and he answered “yes”. The preacher then asked, “When”? Henry answered, “Now”. That night he was baptized in the name of Jesus. Six months later he was called to preach. Even though he had been baptized in the name of Jesus, he was still attending a Baptist Church. So, they eventually put him out. In 1926, he started his first church named Emmanuel Tabernacle, which was located at 4th and W Street, NW Washington, DC. After being there five months, he was informed that he had to leave because another church had purchased the building. This caused the small congregation to be scattered. For approximately three months he went without any accommodations. He stored the church equipment in the home of Charles and Alice Johnson, (his brother-in-law and Sister), at 3rd and Q Street, NW. This is where the church reorganized. The membership consisted of his wife, Willie Shaw Dunston Brooks, their three children at that time; Isabel, John and Essie, Charles and Alice Johnson, Rose Belle Howard and Lovie Foster Brown. On the night of February 28, 1927, The Way of the Cross Church of Christ was started; however the name was not given until they located the building at 2nd and P Street, NW. The owner asked for
what purpose they would be using the building, and Bishop Brooks answered, “A church”. He asked Deacon Bruce for a name. Deacon Bruce replied, “The Way of The Cross”. Until that time, they had only been regarded as the Church of Christ. Combined, we now have The Way of the Cross Church of Christ. The Lord blessed tremendously, and in approximately one year, the building at 2nd and P Street, NW was filled to capacity. As a result, they were required to find another place to worship. They moved to 21st and M Street, NW. This building had a seating capacity of 300. After seven years there, it was also filled to capacity. One of the charter members, Samuel M. Cole, told Bishop Brooks about a building at 4th and Virginia Avenue, SE Washington, DC. Bishop Brooks and Elder Alexander R. Harris went to see the building. As they sat in the 3rd bench in the middle aisle the Lord told Bishop Brooks to claim it. At that time in Washington, DC, no other Pentecostal or Apostolic ministry worshipped in an actual church building. Moreover in 1935, God blessed Bishop Brooks and the congregation to purchase the property. The church remained there until 1963, when they were required to move due to the construction of the Interstate highway. In need of a place to worship, by the leading of the Lord Bishop Brooks found the building at 9th and D Street NE, Washington, DC. He inquired of the current pastor if the building was for sale and was told that they had just completed $100,000 worth of renovations, so they had no intention of selling. Bishop Brooks told the pastor that the Lord sent him there. He contacted an agent and the next Sunday, The Way of the Cross Church of Christ membership worshipped in the building. Today, we continue to worship in the same building. Bishop was a man of great faith, who always sought the Lord in everything. He went on to be with the Lord on June 12, 1967.

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 This is indeed a time of joy and excitement as we gather in celebration of our 71st Holy Convocation and the 30 year tenure of our Presiding Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, of The Way of the Cross Church of Christ, International. We are sincerely grateful for the dedication and support you’ve provided to the organization down through the years. You have encouraged the hearts of many Bishops, Elders, Deacons, Missionaries, Youth for Christ and the entire WOTCC family by witnessing your zealous spirit of dedication to the work of the Lord. It has exemplified unity and love for the people of God and community in general. We pray that God will continue to increase favor upon you, endow you with greater wisdom, intensify your heart and ear gates and give you more grace. Keep the faith Bishop Cannady, continue to stand on His word and rest assured that through Christ Jesus all things are possible. Elder Aaron Porter
lder Aaron Porter is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He was born November 26, 1975 to the proud parents of the late Bishop Lawson Porter and First Lady Clara Porter. He is the seventh child of fifteen.
Uniquely born as a twin coupled with the spiritual significance of being born the 7th child –would ordinarily be enough to make any middle child feel special. However, these details pale in comparison to the miracle that was performed in Elder Porter’s life when God rebuked death from his lifeless body after he fell victim to a childhood disease that left him in an unconscious state for 30 minutes. Defying all scientific odds and free of all neurological deformities, physical imbalance or any other suggested infirmities –Aaron Patrick Porter would go on to live the life of a normal and healthy 2-year old. At the impressionable age of 17, he was baptized in the name of Jesus and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost, at the Clinton Street Greater Bethlehem Temple Church under the pastorate of the late Bishop Kastor Jackson. He is happily married to the lovely, Erica Porter and from their blessed union they parent three talented children, Aaron Jr., Ayanna & Aaliyah Porter. At God’s instruction, Elder Porter relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana on June 18, 1999; where he is currently a member of the Mt. Zion Apostolic Church under the pastoral leadership and guidance of his father in the Gospel, Bishop Lambert Wade Gates, Sr. Thankful for the positive influences and mentorship of both his natural father; Bishop Lawson Porter and his spiritual father; Bishop Lambert W. Gates, Sr. –Elder Porter attributes his ministry to both of these outstanding men. Elder Porter currently serves as the Executive Director of Youth Ministries, Teen Coordinator for the Youth of Mt. Zion, Worship Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Indiana State Council Youth Chairman and President of the Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith, Incorporated – National Youth Council. An extension of his heart driven ministry is also found in singing! Elder Porter is an anointed Psalmist who loves to magnify the Lord through songs of praise and worship. He believes that in these last days that God has called him to strengthen those who remain.

Dr. Jerome Stokes
r. Jerome Stokes serves as Senior Pastor and Chief Executive Officer of The Church of the Redeemed of the Lord (CRL) in Baltimore, Maryland. CRL is a ministry providing its congregants and community with operational programs, services, and courses of instruction for the development of the total person. In his executive capacities, Dr. Stokes oversees more than 40 operational components including a day staff and associate pastors. Through a successful 25-year tenure, he developed and implemented strategic business plans, allowing the ministry to meet the needs of the community, empower individuals, and change lives. He began his pastorate in 1985, with twelve members and led the ministry to a current membership of more than 7000. Furthermore, Dr. Stokes has excelled in creating both the structure and team necessary to guide the ministry through the turbulence and uncertainty of this dramatic growth. Dr. Stokes started CRL with a 20-year executive level background as a systems analyst, gaining valuable experience in the highly competitive business industry. This experience, and most importantly, the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit, allowed him to nurture and shape a ministry where spiritual and natural growth and development flourish. As the ministry grew in size, services, revenue, and maturity, Dr. Stokes recruited and hired capable men and women needed to sustain the level of quality service for successful ministry and outreach to the world. He serves as senior pastor for a large staff of elders, ministers, and associate pastors, with several entering the Pastorate and establishing ministries to further extend his Godgiven vision. Under his leadership, the ministry continues to offer essential services to the community, free of charge. These services include: The Matthew 25 Crew, providing prison and homeless outreach; a Food Pantry, serving the community on a daily basis; a G.E.D. Program; and The Redeemed International Christian College, empowering the community through education. Additionally, the ministry gives back to the community annually by providing back-to-school supplies to more than 200 children; Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to those in need; and giving toys for Christmas to over 400 children in the community, local shelters, and children of those who are incarcerated. Dr. Stokes’ community commitment affiliates him with several community organizations, including the Govans Economic Management System (GEMS) and the Penn Lucy and Wilson Park Community Associations. He is also the Chair of the Board of Directors for CRL and the Redeemed International Christian College. Dr. Stokes is an author of several books, including God’s Vision, Your Decision and You Can Do It! Bishop James D. Nelson, Sr.
he Bible often likens the people of God to sheep. They are defenseless and in need of guidance, to be nurtured and cared for. Truly a pastor is a shepherd; the watchman and protector of his flock. This individual is appointed by the Lord and has the responsibility of feeding the hungry soul. Jesus said, “Man cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). In very much the same way the pastor must attend to the natural and spiritual needs of the people. He must be compassionate and tender, yet firm and courageous; yielding to the divine mandates of God. The Scripture also requires that “He must be blameless… vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, and apt to teach” (I Timothy 3:2). Born July 8, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri, Bishop Nelson, Sr., Founder and Presiding Prelate Emeritus, World Assemblies of Restoration, Inc., is the third oldest of seven children. He received his primary education in Muskegon, Michigan, but later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he enlisted in the United States Army. After serving two years in Chicago and one year in Korea, he attended the Chicago Baptist Institute. Upon completion, he returned to St. Louis where he found and married Overseer Bessie Nelson. Overseer Bessie Nelson, his beloved wife, is a rare and precious jewel. From this blessed union, four children (Janice, James Jr., Jason and Jonathan) were born. In July 2014, Bishop and Evangelist Nelson bought joy to hundreds as they witnessed renewal of their vows during their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1963, Bishop Nelson, Sr. was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ under Bishop P.L. Scott, and later received the gift of the Holy Ghost under Pastor Grace White. Nestled in her pastoral care, he served faithfully as a deacon and the local minister while learning to “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” (I Chronicles 16:29). Later Bishop Nelson Sr., was installed as Senior Pastor of the Bethlehem Temple Church. Then naturally, because of his thirst for souls, that little flower blossomed into the Greater Bethlehem Temple Church of Deliverance. He served as pastor faithfully for more than 25 years. The Tabernacle at GBT (formerly Greater Bethlehem Temple) was gifted a rich legacy of spiritual wealth, as well as a beautiful 7-acre property. The gift is undeniably due to the favor of God. In July 2007, Bishop Nelson transitioned from the Office of Pastor at GBT to Apostolic Father and Overseer of his life’s “work”. The Tabernacle at GBT is blessed to have continued access to him. A faithful servant of God who possesses the wisdom, dedication and strength necessary to lead us from earth to glory, he is due double-honor. As an Apostolic Father, he is most certainly called, qualified and commissioned by God for destiny and end-time ministry. In 1995, under the guidance of our Lord Jesus Christ, Bishop Nelson, Sr., resigned his executive position on the Board of Bishops of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. He then founded the World Assemblies of Restoration, Inc. (W.A.R), becoming Presiding Prelate. Since its official launch in October of 1995, the organization has a membership of more than 300 churches across the United States, West Africa, Jamaica, West Indies and Canada. His love for God, love for the Word of God, the people of God, and His family have been a hallmark of his dynamic and faithful spiritual leadership. During his 19½-year tenure as Presiding Prelate, he has built WAR a solid foundation on the Word of God. He’s ministered to Jew, Gentile and Muslim; he baptized thousands in the names of Jesus; he consecrated individuals for five-fold ministry, established churches nationally and internationally, and built schools and church edifices. He is a prophet whose generosity is unparalleled. As a “walking Bible” worshipper, Bishop Nelson, Sr., epitomizes the meaning of a living epistle. Bishop Nelson, Sr., has had too many accomplishments to list here. He has also received Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Theology and holds a Doctorate of Theology from Pentecostal Bible Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama. In addition, he earned leadership certificates from several vocational schools and other such institutions as Essex Community College and Washington University. On July 25, 2014, Bishop Nelson Sr., passed the mantle of WAR’s Presider to his spiritual son, 1st Assistant Presiding Prelate, Bishop Jonathan Wallace, Sr., also a founding leader. (Bishop Wallace, Sr., is Senior Pastor at Inner Court Ministries, Inc., and covers many other ministries.) The Kingdom assignment as Apostolic Father and Presiding Prelate Emeritus keeps Bishop Nelson, Sr., busier now than before, as the Prelate. He is continually in high demand globally to mentor, mediate, preach and teach The Word of the Lord. The world crowns the success of a man, but God crowns his faithfulness. To God Be the Glory!
To God Be the Glory Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalms 1:1-3

Bishop James Nelson, Jr.
R
everend James Nelson, Jr. has the spirit of David, “A man after God’s own heart”. His love and admiration for God is visible, through his preaching, his worship, and his praise. God has rested upon him the ability to take listeners with him through the scriptures, causing the Word of God to leap from the pages to minister healing, deliverance, and a convicting word that changes lives forever. God is using his ministry to change the lives of people around the world. Reverend Nelson has traveled extensively for over nineteen years, speaking in conferences and churches. He has been blessed to travel both nationally and internationally. Africa, Great Britain, West Indies and the Caribbean are just a few of the places God has opened doors for him to minister. Reverend Nelson successfully served five years as Pastor in Maryland, under the leadership of his father, Bishop James Nelson, Sr. founder and presiding Prelate of World Assemblies of Restoration. Under this leadership, he was International Youth Director and District Overseer for multiple churches. Under God’s leading, Pastor Nelson founded and became Visionary of “The Refreshing Conference”. A conference to unify, strengthen and refresh the neighboring churches and Pastors of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. This conference promoted healing, encouragement and the spirit of oneness to the Pastors, Pastors’ Wives and the surrounding Body of Christ. In 2004, Elder Nelson heard the voice of the God and transitioned his family from Maryland to North Carolina to study and serve under the leadership of Bishop Joby and Pastor Sheryl Brady. There, he served as part of the Ministry Team at the River Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. This God ordained union provided healing, strength and motivation for Reverend Nelson and his family. Upon completion of his assignment at The River, God re-directed his footsteps and relocated Reverend Nelson and his family back to Maryland to go forward in God’s purpose and destiny. Reverend Nelson served as the Assistant Pastor of The Empowerment Temple in Baltimore, Maryland where Dr. Jamal Harrison-Bryant is the very fine Senior Pastor. As God’s divine providence would have it that was not the final phase of ministry for him. Upon the closing moments of 2007, God began to speak to Pastor Nelson about birthing a ministry of his own. In April after faithfully serving and working to help facilitate others’ visions, Pastor Nelson successfully launched Destiny Christian Church. God has already shown Destiny Church great favor and has blessed them substantially. Reverend Nelson is married to the beautiful Wendy Renee. He is the proud father of three lovely children, James III, Jade Milan and Imani.

Honoring A Great Man of God Praise the Lord Bishop Leroy H. Cannady, Sr:
W
e greet you in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!! We would like to say thank you for your support over the last 8 years. As my family and I relocated to Baltimore from Massachusetts, our need for continual personal and spiritual growth was of the utmost importance. I began a quest for an established ministry with a leader who was seasoned in the Apostolic doctrine and held to a standard set forth by the Word of God. I knew by aligning my family with a ministry of this caliber, the anointing and the move of God would be present and the teaching of the Apostolic doctrine would allow my young family to grow in God allowing our relationship with God to flourish. After visiting multiple churches in the Baltimore area and not feeling the push of God, I came across the website of Refuge Way of the Cross and there was something about the picture of you and Mother Cannady that brought me peace and comfort. The Spirit said, “This is the place!!” God led me to visit Refuge on a Wednesday night during prayer. As I prayed with the few members that were in attendance that night, I felt the “push” of God and I knew this was the ministry God had for us. God has allowed me to experience higher heights and deeper depths in Him since I have been under your guidance, tutelage and mentorship.
This ministry has sown so much into my family that there are no words that can adequately describe the spiritual impact you have had on our lives. Your life has spoken louder than the anointed word you have preached. I continually stand in awe of your humbleness, spiritual attitude and aptitude. I have never experienced such a well-rounded leader who has committed his life to the ministry of serving others and sacrificing his needs for them as you. The learning I have experienced while under your guidance has been and will be invaluable as God completes His work in me. You have made me a better husband, father, leader, friend and man by teaching me that every relationship I have must be in line with the word of God. Thank you for leading this organization for the last 30 years as the Presider and prior to that, four years as the Vice Presider. The Way of the Cross Churches International and Refuge Way of the Cross owe a debt of gratitude to you for holding to the standards set forth by Bishop Henry Chauncey Brooks as he was led by God. As you have stated in many keynote addresses, “I was there”. This is just the beginning Bishop Cannady, as God has much more for you to accomplish. We look forward to seeing what God has in store for you next. The Barnett family will continue to pray and support you in any way we can as you complete the vision God has given you for Refuge Way of the Cross. Congratulations Bishop…..Well Done!!!.....Well Done!!!!

The Way of the Cross Leads Home
Lyrics: Jessie Brown Pounds
I must needs go home By the way of the cross, There’s no other way but this; I shall ne’er get sight Of the gates of light, If the way of the cross I miss. The way of the cross leads home, The way of the cross leads home, It is sweet to know As I onward go, The way of the cross leads home. I must needs go on In the blood sprinkled way, The path that the Savior trod; If I ever climb To the heights sublime, Where the soul is at home with God. The way of the cross leads home, The way of the cross leads home, It is sweet to know As I onward go, The way of the cross leads home. Then I bid farewell To the way of the world, To walk in it never more; For the Lord says, Come, And I seek my home, Where He waits at the open door. The way of the cross leads home, The way of the cross leads home, It is sweet to know As I onward go, The way of the cross leads home.
