MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Alexander Mickelthwate

Welcome to the Concert Hall and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. It's finally getting a little warmer, spring is almost here and we are coming into the final, most exciting stretch of our season. This month we offer quite a range of musical choices: from Beethoven to Pink Floyd and Bartók to Rachmaninov. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is, in a way, as revolutionary as the music of Pink Floyd. Bartók wrote the piece shortly after the Second World War and started with it a completely new genre; not a tone poem, not a symphony, but a virtuosic showpiece for the instruments of the orchestra: a 'concerto' for orchestra. And the genius of Bartók was able to write a literal 'ear worm' in its last movement, a melody that is hard to get out of your head. Pink Floyd is one of the most successful bands of all time that revolutionized the concert experience. The songs – colourful and forbidden – are dramatic mini-symphonies and amazing soundscapes, ones that had never been done before. Pink Floyd helped dust off the traditional value system of the western world. Have a great month of March and some terrific concert experiences.

Alexander

CONDUCTORS & COMPOSERS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director Recognized as one of the most exciting young conductors of his generation, Alexander Mickelthwate is in his fifth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, where he has significantly raised the ensemble’s profile through innovative programming and active community engagement. Praised for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times), the German-born conductor has attracted attention for his charismatic presence on the podium and command of a wide range of musical styles. In August 2007, Alexander culminated his three-year tenure as Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with which he appeared regularly at Walt Disney Concert Hall and at the Hollywood Bowl. Previously as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, he co-founded the new music ensemble Bent Frequency, which was hailed as "one of the brightest ensembles on the scene” (Gramophone Magazine). Recent highlights include debuts with the Houston Symphony, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, the Johannesburg Philharmonic and the Bukarest Philharmonic, a re-engagement with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and a highly successful last-minute replacement with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. As guest conductor, Alexander has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Hamburg Symphony, NDR Hannover, as well as with symphony orchestras in several Canadian and U.S. cities. Born in Germany into a musical family, he studied conducting in Karlsruhe, Germany and at the Peabody Conservatory with Gustav Meier, and was invited as a conducting Fellow at Tanglewood, as well as at the Eötvöes Institute in Hungary. He is married with two sons.

Richard Lee, Resident Conductor From the time his mother sat him down at a toy piano when he was three years old, Richard Lee has spent his life immersed in music. He graduated to a real piano at the age of five and took up the violin at age seven. At age seventeen, he passed – with honours – the grade X piano and violin exams at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. After a brief and ill-advised stint as a physics major, Richard came to his senses and pursued a degree in Music Performance at the University of Toronto as both a violinist and a violist while studying conducting. After teaching middle school music for five years, Richard returned to the U of T where, as the Victor Feldbrill Fellow in orchestral conducting, he obtained a Master’s degree under the tutelage of Raffi Armenian. Richard is currently Resident Conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Conductor of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra, as well as Music Director of the Korean Canadian Symphony Orchestra, based in Toronto. He has also conducted the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Vancouver, Quebec and Thunder Bay. His work has been broadcast and recorded by the CBC/Radio-Canada. Musician, news junkie and connoisseur of fine ales, whiskies and cigars, Richard maintains residences in both Winnipeg and Toronto.

Vincent Ho, Composer-in-Residence Vincent Ho is widely recognized as one of the most outstanding composers of his generation. His works have been hailed for their profound expressiveness and textural beauty that has audiences talking about with great enthusiasm. His many awards have included Harvard University’s Fromm Music Commission, The Canada Council for the Arts’ “Robert Fleming Prize,” ASCAP’s “Morton Gould Young Composer Award,” four SOCAN Young Composers Awards, and CBC Radio’s Audience Choice Award (2009 Young Composers’ Competition). Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1975, Vincent Ho began his musical training through the Royal Conservatory of Music. He received his Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) in 1993, his Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary in 1998, his Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto in 2000, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California (2005). His mentors have included Allan Bell, David Eagle, Christos Hatzis, Walter Buczynski, and Stephen Hartke. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Schola Cantorum Summer Composition Program in Paris, where he received further training in analysis, composition, counterpoint, and harmony, supervised by David Diamond, Philip Lasser, and Narcis Bonet. Authors and Publishers helped out financially so he could continue to compose. When Bartók’s old friends, violinist Joseph Szigeti and conductor Fritz Reiner, found out about their fellow countryman’s sad state, they suggested to the famous conductor Serge Koussevitzky that his foundation commission an orchestral piece in memory of his wife, Natalie. As a pioneer in presenting new works, Koussevitzky agreed and offered Bartók one thousand dollars. Bartók accepted half, fearing he might not be able to complete the work. What followed for the composer was an Autumn-summer of creation. Bartók threw himself into the project with newly fortified strength. The premiere was an instant success and Concerto for Orchestra was immediately taken on by many orchestras, its place in the literature guaranteed along with a landslide of new interest in its composer. Sadly, Bartók died less than a year later. Concerto for Orchestra is the ultimate 20th-century showpiece for orchestra that puts all its resources on high alert within a compelling musical narrative. The interval of a fourth pervades the opening movement, of his famous “night music” type. The second movement, called Game of Pairs, pits paired instruments against each other in jest, with a chorale-like Trio at the centre. The third movement, Elegy, uses three themes derived from the opening movement. The fourth movement features shifting time signatures around the everambiguous tri-tone in the scale, with a fizzing parody of the march from Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” Symphony No. 7 in the middle. All stops are pulled out for the exciting finale, a whirling perpetual motion of fireworks and folk spirit.

on his concert tours during the last decade of his life. It was also the last of his pieces he performed in public, two months before his death in March of 1943.

The fantastic violin feats by Niccolò Paganini have long been legendary since he burst on the European concert scene in 1805. Paganini’s astonishing virtuosity was thought to come from - now known to have been fostered by Paganini himself - a Faust-like darker world of devilry where Paganini was thought to have exchanged his soul for the mastery of his art.

Symphonic Dances Sergei Rachmaninov Composed: 1940 First performance: January 4, 1941 (Philadelphia), conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Last WSO performance: 2003, Andrey Boreyko, conductor

Rachmaninov had been thinking about that story for a 1937 ballet scenario for choreographer Mikhail Fokine. The idea focused around a set of 24 variations using the theme from the last of Paganini’s 24 virtuoso Caprices for solo violin, No. 24 in A minor. The story - a satire on military bungling - is based on an anecdote There would be more melodies – about Czar Nicholas I who misreads the Dies Irae (“Day of Wrath”) theme from the Requiem Mass the name of a Russian officer on a military report, adding the expletive signifying the Dead and well used by Berlioz (Symphonie fantastique), jé by mistake (a Freudian slip?) to Liszt and others, plus love the last syllable ki. Fearful of episodes since a woman was pointing out the error, the underlings invent a mythical soldier included in Paganini’s deal with the devil. The result was a named Kijé whose bungling is so great he is sent to Siberia but later brilliant virtuoso showpiece for recalled by the Czar in a surprising piano and orchestra that also reflected Rachmaninov’s personal act of clemency. When the Czar piano technique and unique expresses interest in meeting Kijé, communicative power. the Czar is informed that Kijé sadly - had just expired. After a brief opening, the theme is touched on in a manner similar Prokofiev loved the story and supplied a highly tuneful score, the to what Beethoven did in the Troika of which is often heard alone. Finale of the Eroica Symphony. The film was a great success and did Unison violins then enter with a clearer statement, 24 bars in much to further the style of Soviet length. Dies Irae and Love-theme music both for him and Soviet variations follow. Paganini composers that followed. appears, as does the evil spirit, the woman and, in Variation 18, one Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini of Rachmaninov’s memorably Sergei Rachmaninov soaring melodies, actually an b. Oneg, Russia / April 1, 1873 inversion of Paganini’s theme. d. Los Angeles, CA USA / March 28, 1943 The Rhapsody was a great success Composed: 1934 at the premiere in 1934 and was First performance: November 7, 1934 regularly played by the composer

Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances was his last work and also made use of the Dies Irae theme. One can speculate that he was thinking fatalistically during his last decade, having used the theme in the above Rhapsody as well as his Third Symphony (1937). His melancholia and longing for his Russian roots were well-known. He called the Symphonic Dances his “last flicker,” feeling himself without the “strength and fire” to compose again. But there is nothing slack about the Symphonic Dances for they contain some of Rachmaninov’s finest music. Despite a cool reception at the premiere, perhaps due to the elusive paths between the music’s hard-won optimism and sadness, one feels a rugged journey told through the composer’s striking personality. The opening movement grows from a miniature three-note motive, with alto saxophone at the centre of the movement’s three-part design. The second movement is a waltz in the style of Tchaikovsky. The finale has a blend of jazz elements and the Dies Irae, ending in a coda born from Russian Orthodox chant. At this point Rachmaninov wrote “Alliluya” in the score. Since the Alliluya succeeds the Dies Irae, one wonders which message is at play, whether Faith, death, sadness or optimism. Rachmaninov leaves that for us to decide.

Jean Meilleur “Passionate, provocative and distinctive” are three words that best describe Jean Meilleur’s vocal style. While performing the music of so many artists including the likes of Elton John, The Beatles, David Bowie, as well as his own compositions, Mr. Meilluer paints the lyrics and melody with a thick, robust timbre that is immediately recognizable as his own. He is a prolific songwriter who has been performing professionally for over twenty-five years and is thrilled to be involved with Jean 'n Classics. Now in his fifteenth year as its headliner, he has performed with scores of major North American Orchestras.

Katalin Kiss Katalin Kiss is known in the Canadian music industry for her staggering, tear-the-roof-off, goosebump-inducing vocals. In her travels she’s worked with many legends: Del Shannon, Chubby Checker, Chuck Berry and Chaka Khan. A much-respected member of the Jeans 'n Classics family, Ms. Kiss lives in Picton, Ontario with her bassist husband and kids, where they have their own recording studio.

Leah Salomaa Leah Salomaa studied dance, classical violin, drama and voice and has worked with such companies as the Canadian Opera Company, the Tarragon Theatre, and the Canadian Children's Dance in her twenty-year career. Leah enjoys her work in music as a vocalist, composer, pianist, percussionist and songwriter and loves fusing her theatrical background, classical training and natural love for folk music into various traditional and contemporary endeavors.

David Dunlop David Dunlop has been a pro guitarist, songwriter, singer and educator for the past 25 years. He balances his studio work while touring as a member of the awardwinning Strung-Out

Troubadours, the Rik Emmett Band, the Alan Frew Trio and Jeans ’n Classics. In 2005, Mr. Dunlop established his Room 9 studio, and in 2008 joined re-formed Hall of Famers, Triumph, supporting the original line-up of Rik Emmett, Gil Moore and Mike Levine.

Don Paulton Don returns for his 17th season with Jeans ‘n Classics. As a longtime member of Canadian super-group Lighthouse, he was inducted into the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. He has performed with such acts as Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, The Byrds, Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), and the Platters. Mr. Paulton toured extensively with the hit theatre production, A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, mastering the piano styles of Floyd Kramer.

Kevin Muir Kevin Muir started his musical career on violin before shifting to the acoustic bass full-time in university. He earned Hon. Bachelor of Music, Theory & Composition, Gold Medal from the University of Western Ontario and has been the bass player with the Stratford Festival Orchestra since 1993, and also plays orchestral, chamber, jazz, and pop music all over Southern Ontario, while doing his fair share of session work in the area.

Jeff Christmas Jeff Christmas is a Canadianbased composer, arranger, conductor, drummer, percussionist and trumpeter. He studied at York University, the University of Western Ontario and Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Film Scoring and Composition. He was composer-inresidence with the Orchestra London and has performed with several symphony orchestras across North America, as well as appearing internationally with artists as Denny Doherty, The Rankin Sisters, Ashley McIsaac, J.P. Cormier and Michael Burgess. M a r c h 2 0 11 I O V E R T U R E 2 1
