MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Alexander Mickelthwate

Welcome to the New Year. I'm currently reading a very inspiring book, Sacred Sounds, that delves into the enormous power of sound and music, something that most of us are quite familiar with. Yet, to me it is always encouraging to have non-musicians write about such a profound subject.

Photographer: Keith Levit

There is no other concert that reflects the power of music and sound more than our January Masterworks concert, Prokofiev 3 & Dvorˇák 7, with blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii. He defies physical limitations, stretches human possibilities and simply inspires through the beauty and energy of sound and music. A different way of being swept away by harmony and melody is during Valentine’s Day with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, the perfect romance with a familiar dangerous twist with Canadian pianist Angela Cheng. A third way of experiencing sounds and music is in the baroque tone poems The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. See and hear Vivaldi's way of making you freeze, sweat or feel perfectly comfortable through winter, spring, summer and autumn with concertmaster Gwen Hoebig. Speaking of sweat, if you want a hot night out, Cuban music group Tiempo Libre will get you going in A Symphonic Night in Havana and Michael Burgess and Rebecca Caine are going to warm your heart with the biggest tunes from Broadway and the West End in The Dream Concert. Whatever it is, music and sounds have been scientifically proven to change brain waves and emotions. But, the most important thing is that you are experiencing music with others and creating lasting memories that are for some of us, sacred or romantic or just simply fun.

Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor, Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his seventh season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring for Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra is the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander lead the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting master-classes, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall. Always looking for a fresh approach and creative ways of crossing musical genres, Alexander has collaborated with Iceland’s Bedroom Community, Wayne Shorter, Mark O’Connor, Belle and Sebastian, Jason Alexander, DJ P-Love, Canadian bands Waking Eyes, Liptonians and Dukhs. Alexander has conducted for the Queen of England, for former President Jimmy Carter, and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Richard Lee, Resident Conductor From the time his mother sat him down at a toy piano when he was three years old, Richard Lee has spent his life immersed in music. He graduated to a real piano at the age of five and took up the violin at age seven. At age seventeen, he passed – with honours – the grade X piano and violin exams at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. After a brief and ill-advised stint as a physics major, Richard came to his senses and pursued a degree in Music Performance at the University of Toronto as both a violinist and violist. After teaching middle school music for five years, Richard returned to the U of T where, as the Victor Feldbrill Fellow in orchestral conducting, he obtained a Master’s degree under the tutelage of Raffi Armenian. Richard is the Music Director of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra (based in Tyler) and the Korean Canadian Symphony Orchestra (Toronto). He is also the Resident Conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Guest engagements this season include the Kingston Symphony Orchestra as well as a tour of Mexico with I Musici de Montréal. Musician, news junkie and connoisseur of fine ales, whiskies and cigars, Richard maintains residences in both Winnipeg and Toronto. He roots for the Toronto FC and the Toronto Raptors basketball club.

PROGRAM NOTES by James Manishen

Concert Românesc (Romanian Concerto) György Ligeti b. Romania / May 28, 1923 d. Vienna / June 12, 2006 Composed: 1951 First performance: 1971 First WSO performance As a child in the former border region of Transylvanian Hungary (now Romania), Ligeti enjoyed the sights and sounds of local musicians in animal masks as they played tangy folk music on violins and bagpipes. Even as a mature composer, he often recalled how vivid those memories of Romanian folk music had remained to him. Concert Românesc (Romanian Concerto) drew in part on actual folk music Ligeti had studied at the Folklore Institute of Bucharest in 1949 – “in the spirit of the village bands” as he described the piece. Ligeti’s more famously avant garde style in the 1960s and 70s covered vastly different ground and in comparison, the Romanian Concerto seems almost like a pastiche. Still, its muted modern touches initially caused trouble with the authorities and the piece was banned in Bucharest after a single rehearsal. A public performance did not take place until 1971. The four movements follow without pause. The opening Andantino’s modal harmonies and open fifths look back to a bygone age. The next movement recalls Ligeti’s boyhood memories of wild Romanian folk music. The third movement features horns instructed to play in natural (valveless) tuning, perhaps recalling Carpathian alpine horns. The English horn also has a say with an orientalflavoured melody. The finale bustles, expanding into more dissonant territory with its strong syncopations and echoes of Bartók before coming back to Romanian folk roots, ending with an unexpected coda of solo violin seemingly refusing to let the music go.

Piano Concerto No. 3

Symphony No. 7

Serge Prokofiev b. Sontsovka, Ukraine / April 23, 1891 d. Moscow / March 5, 1953 Composed: 1921 First performance: December 16, 1921 (Chicago) conducted by Frederick Stock with the composer as soloist Last WSO performance: 2000, Terrence Wilson, piano; Markand Thakar, conductor

Antonin Dvorˇák b. Bohemia / September 8, 1841 d. Prague / May 1, 1904 Composed: 1884-85 First performance: April 22, 1885 (London) conducted by the composer Last WSO performance: 2006, Gregory Vajda, conductor

Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto gestated for a long time before coming to fruition in the summer of 1921 while the composer was staying at St. Brévin-les-Pins on the Atlantic coast of Brittany in France. By 1911 he had produced two piano concertos and began thinking about a new virtuoso work he could play that would have wide appeal. Apart from sketches, mostly of the material from the theme-and-variation second movement, he didn’t go full force at his Third Piano Concerto until the summer of 1921 when he pulled all his ideas together with a singular intensity and capacity for work his first wife Lina recalled as “phenomenal.” As no less phenomenal a performing pianist, Prokofiev took the Third on his 1921 American tour. The Chicago premiere was a major success, in part anticipated by the excitement of the Chicago premiere of Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges that took place a few weeks later, but also to the Concerto’s clear classical appeal, freshly acerbic content and dazzling solo display the composer knew how to unapologetically serve up in his own performance. A lone clarinet launches the first movement, after which the strings and solo piano take off followed by caustic oboes and castanets, a brilliant development section and rhapsodic return of the opening theme. Strings and woodwinds gently introduce the marchlike theme of the second movement. Five variations follow, each a story in itself with Prokofiev’s acid lyricism, rowdy mischief and ultimate longing felt in perfect sequence. The Finale starts with a march in three-quarter time. Heady development leads to a climactic melody seemingly in tribute to fellowexile Rachmaninov, and ending with a driving coda.

After attending the premiere of Brahms’s Third Symphony on December 2, 1883, Dvorˇák called his friend’s work “the greatest symphony of its time.” Dvorˇák had appreciated Brahms’s encouragement and consider him a benefactor, especially since Brahms had also convinced the publisher Simrock to take on the young Czech composer’s music. Of his own next symphony, Dvorˇák vowed that it “must be something respectable for I don’t want to let Brahms down.” Less than two weeks after the Brahms premiere, Dvorˇák lost his mother and his next symphony would prove to reflect that as no less an emotional seed. Dvorˇák met fame conducting in England in the spring of 1884. On June 13 he was elected an honorary member of the Philharmonic Society and was asked to supply a new symphony. By December he was hard at work in the new D-minor Symphony. The London premiere was a great success. Eminent musicologist Sir Donald Tovey placed the work “among the greatest and purest examples of this art-form since Beethoven.” Though Dvorˇák’s Seventh has a similar cast and character with Brahms’s symphonies, the work has a distinct personality of its own, never abandoning the Bohemian folk roots Dvorˇák adopted as his calling card. Notable is the Scherzo, Dvorˇák’s greatest dance movement, but one feels a noble presence within each movement and grand resolve overall. Few would argue that the Seventh ranks among Dvorˇák’s finest achievements.

A Program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

Changing our World through Music Play Your Part Sistema Winnipeg is a program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), in partnership with the Seven Oaks School Division (SOSD) and the Winnipeg School Division (WSD). It is based on the successful El Sistema model originating in Venezuela. This program is an inclusive afterschool orchestra program that seeks to effect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. El Sistema focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need and is delivered at no cost to participants.

"I am so happy in Sistema. I love my viola because it makes different sounds. I feel happy when I play. There are a lot of people that care about me in Sistema. I care about them too." - Viola student in Sistema Winnipeg

Sistema Winnipeg launched in fall 2011 at Elwick Community School (SOSD), which is identified as a low socio-economic neighbourhood in Winnipeg’s north end. A second location started in the fall of 2012 at King Edward School (WSD), located in the inner city of Winnipeg. From 3:30 pm-6:30 pm, five days every week, 80 students in grades 1-4 participate in this program that uses the power of ensemble music to dramatically change the life trajectory of these children's lives. The program focuses on the values of inclusion, teamwork, artistic excellence, intensity, mentorship and community focus. Sistema Winnipeg students have regular sectionals with string teachers, receive visits from WSO ensemble groups and attend student concerts throughout the season.

Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra As the pioneer of the Youth Orchestra movement in Canada, the Winnipeg Youth Orchestras were founded in 1923 as part of Winnipeg School Division 1. Despite becoming “Incorporated” in 1983, the strong affiliation with Winnipeg School Division 1 remains. The aim of the founding fathers was simply to offer young and aspiring musicians from across Manitoba the opportunity to play music in an orchestral setting. Central to its program are the two annual performances and the annual tour that have focused on reaching out across Manitoba so that children from more rural areas can experience the richness and diversity of classical music. The Winnipeg Youth Orchestras are comprised of the three orchestra groups, the Youth Strings (Junior), the Youth Concert (Intermediate) and the Youth Symphony (Senior). The program is open to students between the ages of 9 and 21, and there are typically between 140-160 members. s, wit h
