MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR Timothy E. Burt, CFA
This coming year promises to be a historic year for the WSO and our community as a whole. For the WSO, the upcoming Spring for Music Festival performance at Carnegie Hall is an occasion to celebrate and to take pride in the accomplishments of Manitoba’s symphony orchestra. There is still time to arrange your trip to New York City to be part of the large group of Winnipeggers who will be there to support the WSO… and of course, to enjoy all of the wonderful sights and sounds of this exciting city. There are many concert performances to enjoy in Winnipeg as we move through the winter months. Take in the 23rd New Music Festival at the end of January, and in February we will have the opportunity to hear the WSO perform Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony. On February 25, 2014, the WSO will hold its annual fundraising gala; celebrate the upcoming retirement of three of our musicians; and honour the WSO’s Artistic Achievement Award winner, Al Simmons, at this event. Attending this event is a great way to support your Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The gala is a little earlier this year so that it is not quite as close to our trip to New York City. I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for the contribution they make to the direction, life and health of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. This group of generous volunteers provides oversight, policy direction, and resources for the continued growth and health of the WSO. We are currently building our group of nominees for the 2014 -15 Board of Directors. If you, or someone you know, would be an excellent addition to the WSO Board of Directors, please contact me through the WSO office. We are looking for people with knowledge of governance and a passion for music and our symphony orchestra. With my best wishes,

CONDUCTORS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his eighth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring for Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra is the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander lead the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting master-classes, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall.

Always looking for a fresh approach and creative ways of crossing musical genres, Alexander has collaborated with Iceland’s Bedroom Community, Wayne Shorter, Mark O’Connor, Belle and Sebastian, Jason Alexander, DJ P-Love, Canadian bands Waking Eyes, Liptonians and Dukhs. Alexander has conducted for the Queen of England, for former President Jimmy Carter, and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor Conductor Julian Pellicano has recently made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall performing with pianist Boris Berman and members of the Yale Philharmonia, he conducted premiere performances of a new opera by Martin Bresnick at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and made his South American debut with the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil). Other recent appearances include concerts with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony, and Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble. From 2009 - 2013, Julian served as Music Director of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra in Cambridge, MA (USA). At the Yale School of Music, Pellicano was Assistant Conductor of the Yale Philharmonia, assisting Music Director Shinik Hahm as well as guest conductors Sir Neville Marriner, Helmuth Rilling, Reinbert de Leeuw and Peter Oundjian. Recognized for his work with living composers and transparent interpretations of contemporary works, Julian has premiered over 40 new pieces and as an artist-in-residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival he conducts the Norfolk New Music Ensemble. He has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, Carl St. Clair, L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award.

When Beethoven began his majestic E-flat Symphony in 1803, a decade had passed since Napoleon Bonaparte had started his meteoric ascent to power. Putting in place measures to end centuries of tyrannical social, economic and political oppression, Napoleon was a role model for Beethoven and to be the dedicatee of a large-scaled new Symphony. With obvious sorrow, Beethoven re-inscribed the dedication “to celebrate the memory of a great man.” In its unrivaled artistic vistas, length, breadth and emotional sweep, the Eroica Symphony changed the symphonic genre forever. The composer’s role elevated from artisan to visionary, creating in this single work the Romantic era of self-declaration governed by a higher calling. Like cannon shots, the opening movement’s heroic E-flat chords set the stage of a massive essay in narrative development. The Funeral March defines expression of tragedy. The lusty Scherzo contains a rousing central Trio for three horns, one of the earliest times more than two were used. The finale is a set of variations on two themes that gather energy as they go. Violin Concerto No. 2 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart b. Salzburg / January 27, 1756 d. Vienna / December 5, 1791 Composed: 1775 First performance: 1775 (Salzburg), with the composer as soloist First WSO performance Mozart keenly observed the concerto form during his travels as a young man. At the time, concertos were grab-bags of the old and the new. Italianate “moto perpetuo” rhythms and “ritornello” form of returning themes predominated. This plus the emergence of sonata-allegro form, with its contrasting themes and structural recapitulations, offered telling opportunities for Mozart to explore in growing the concerto as a genre. As Mozart travelled across England, Germany, France and Italy absorbing local styles, his agenda was clearly to elevate the concerto to higher artistic vistas. His five violin concertos were all composed during five months in 1775 and with each one Mozart shows an intense re-evaluation over the predecessor. He was just 19 years old, but with a compelling and fertile imagination never inclined to sit still. The Concerto No. 2 is not only a delightful work but also an important one on his voyage of self-discovery. Influences abound. Trills and figurations in the opening movement are notably Gallic, perhaps originating from Mozart’s childhood visit with the family of Louis XV at Versailles. At times the orchestral accompaniment is reduced to only violins - often found in Italian concertos. The overall tunefulness of this movement could be thought to have been fostered by Johann Christian Bach, who taught sixyear-old Mozart in London by playing fugues to each other. The Andante is a lovely aria in operatic style. The finale, a Rondeau, shows more Gallic touches, especially in the appearance of the solo at the outset.

Best known to millions of TV viewers as a top four finalist during the 2007 season of American Idol, LaKisha Jones is ready to reclaim centre stage in music, theatre and television. Her last album, So Glad I’m Me, was full of LaKisha’s expressive, full-bodied and arresting vocals, the same voice that electrified American Idol viewers with the Dreamgirls showstopper And I Am Telling You and later on the Broadway stage in the Oprah Winfrey produced, Tony Award-winning musical, The Color Purple. She auditioned for American Idol once before in 2003, but didn’t make the cut. LaKisha drove to New York to audition again and made it to the 2007 season where she became the fourth finalist. She segued from American Idol to the Broadway stage for The Color Purple where she played the character Sophia. She alternated in that role with R&B icon Chaka Khan, who became her mentor. LaKisha participated in Khan’s 35th Anniversary Tour. Following her Broadway stint, LaKisha provided vocal coaching on MTV’s reality competition Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods, a show designed to find and hone Broadway’s next star.
Matt Giraud is a singer/songwriter and musician from Kalamazoo, Michigan who achieved recognition and acclaim for his performances on the TV show and tour of American Idol. A judge favourite and the first ever recipient of the judges’s save, Matt went on to finish as third runner-up on season eight. Television appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Access Hollywood, and LIVE with Regis and Kelly. Matt released an album called Perspective in 2003 and another in 2006 called Mind Body and Soul. He recorded a cover of the song You Don't Know Me with Anna Wilson and was a featured vocalist on Thank You released by Jim Brickman. Matt has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and in the 2013-14 season he will appear with Symphony Idol with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Spokane Symphony, and The Phoenix Symphony among many others.

Haley Scarnato began a performing career in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas at the young age of 15 as the lead singer for a highly successful regional band, The Oh So Good! Even though Haley was raised on country music, she studied all styles of great singers including Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, Martina McBride, and one of her idols, Celine Dion. In 2007, the long-legged Texas singer was catapulted from a regional favorite to the international stage when she earned a spot in the top ten of American Idol season six. TV appearances include LIVE with Regis and Kelly, Access Hollywood, Mike and Juliet, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Extra and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. José Luis Gomez, conductor The young Venezuelan-born, Spanish conductor José Luis Gomez was catapulted to international success when he won first prize at the International Sir Georg Solti Conductors’ Competition in Frankfurt in September 2010, securing a sensational and rare unanimous decision from the jury. José’s electrifying energy, talent and creativity earned him immediate acclaim from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra where he was appointed to the position of Assistant Conductor, a post created especially for him by Paavo Jarvi and the orchestra directly upon the conclusion of the competition. José started his musical career as a violinist, and by the age of 11 he was Concertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of Zulia State - part of El Sistema Januar y – Februar y 2014 I OVERTURE 21

Patricia Evans Patricia Evans has been principal horn of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since 2002. A native of Northern Vermont, she began her studies on horn at the age of 10. Patricia went on to study at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and at McGill University in Montreal. She participated in the long-term residency program at The Banff Centre before being awarded a fellowship with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Since coming to Winnipeg, Patricia has been invited to play with some of the top orchestras in North America, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She is a frequent soloist with the WSO. Patricia was a featured artist at the 2006 Northeast Horn Workshop and at the 2010 International Women's Brass Conference. She has performed with the Winnipeg Chamber Music Society, Groundswell, at the Clear Lake Music Festival and with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.

Caroline Oberheu Caroline Oberheu, "Callie" to her friends, has been playing third horn with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since 2004. She has also performed with Canzona, the MusikBarock ensemble and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Callie was born and raised in Gilroy, California. After several years of piano lessons, she decided to take up the horn because she was inspired by her parents, who were two amateur musicians who met while playing horn together in the 1960s. Prior to joining the WSO, Callie attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and Rice University in Houston, Texas. Her primary teachers included Los Angeles film studio legend Vincent DeRosa, Richard Todd and William VerMeulen. When she's not playing horn, Callie keeps busy as a football mom and special needs advocate.
Michiko Singh Ken MacDonald Ken MacDonald has served as associate principal horn with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since 2001. He has also appeared as first horn with the Hamilton Philharmonic, Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia. His most recent recording, Festival Winds Live at the Festival of the Sound, was released in September and is available on iTunes. As a member of Octagon Chamber Ensemble, he has appeared at most of Canada's major chamber music series, with another national tour planned for next year. Ken is originally from Vancouver and attended the University of British Columbia. He is on faculty at the University of Manitoba where he teaches horn and chamber music. Ken is enthusiastic about the WSO's extensive outreach activities. He has travelled to remote communities and reserves throughout Manitoba as a teaching artist in the Music Alive Program, a joint venture between the WSO and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Michiko Singh returned to Canada to join the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2010 after playing in the Honolulu Symphony for 11 years. She was the International Horn Society representative for Hawaii, and performed with Chamber Music Hawaii and the Royal Hawaiian Band. She previously held positions in the Hong Kong, Vancouver, Memphis and Hartford Symphonies. As a soloist, she won first prize for the Horn Competition at the International Women's Brass Conference, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce National Brass Competition and the General Motors Solo Competition. She was awarded the Jr. Arts and Letters Award from the Canadian Club of New York. From Carnegie hall crowds to Rusti the Orangutan, Michiko has played for diverse audiences and in various ensembles all over the world. Januar y – Februar y 2014 I OVERTURE 23
ARTIST BIOS Michiko was a finalist at the Metropolitan Opera auditions for fourth horn. Described as "skilled" by the New York Times, Michiko received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the Juilliard School through the support of the Hearst Foundation and Canada Council. She studied with Jerome Ashby, associate principal horn of the New York Philharmonic. She is a single mom to a 3-year-old boy and 17-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. AIR CANADA POPS

Charles Cozens “Charles Cozens…has an extraordinarily refined ear for texture and instrumental color.” – Brian Hunt, The National Post. Equally at home in concert repertoire and pops in many genres, Charles Cozens has guest conducted most of Canada’s leading orchestras, coast to coast. He has also recorded with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Cinema Orchestra and members of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra; conducted Toronto Symphony Orchestra members for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and conducted television and film soundtracks, CD recordings, and over 40 theatrical productions. In April 2013, he made his Cuban debut, appearing with the Villa Clara Symphony Orchestra. He has combined his skills as conductor, arranger and composer for many musical luminaries, including Sir Elton John at the final Fashion Cares gala; and in such successful symphonic pops shows as Putting It Together, for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and The Nylons, and World On A String, with Belgian violin virtuoso Michael Guttman.

Gwen Hoebig Recognized as one of Canada’s most outstanding violinists, Gwen Hoebig is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City. As a student she won every major Canadian music competition, and in 1981 was the top prizewinner at the Munich International Violin Competition. A champion of new music, she has given the Canadian premieres of violin concertos by S.C. Eckhardt-Gramatté, T.P. Carrabré, Randolph Peters, Gary Kulesha, Joan Tower, Christopher Rouse and Philip Glass. As soloist with orchestra she has performed all the major violin concerti with orchestras across Canada, the United States and Europe. Gwen joined the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster in 1987, having been awarded the position as the unanimous choice of the audition committee. In 1993, she was honoured by the Government of Canada when she received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation, in recognition of her contribution to the Arts. She has also been a member of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Music and teaches regularly at the Mount Royal College in Calgary, where she is a member of the Extended Faculty.
