MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR Timothy E. Burt, CFA

We are finally in the home stretch before the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra goes to Carnegie Hall. What started as an experiment to see if our WSO programming ideas could attract the attention of the New York selection panel and the online voting community, turned into a full community engagement project that has generated a lot of enthusiasm and goodwill. Once we were advised that we had been selected for participation in the program, the board had to approve the WSO’s participation in the project. Did the WSO have the ability to gather enough funds to make the trip to New York? After some research, we decided to try an “Adopt-A-Musician Campaign” to cover the expenses of individual musicians and also link the musicians more closely to the community, and a program to encourage Manitobans to visit New York and cheer the WSO on at Carnegie Hall. Our community has generously supported this venture with companies and families adopting all of the WSO musicians, the three levels of government and arts councils supporting the project, and more than 500 Manitobans signing up to travel to New York with us. In so many ways, this has been another example of the wonderful spirit of adventure and generosity in Manitobans. It has been an interesting journey to observe the patterns of support and enthusiasm for the project. There is still time to become part of this adventure. Join us in New York City on May 8th, 2014 to cheer on our Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Timothy E. Burt, CFA President and Chair of the Board Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

CONDUCTORS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his eighth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring for Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra is the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander lead the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting master-classes, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall.

Photographer: Nardella Photography Inc.

Always looking for a fresh approach and creative ways of crossing musical genres, Alexander has collaborated with Iceland’s Bedroom Community, Wayne Shorter, Mark O’Connor, Belle and Sebastian, Jason Alexander, DJ P-Love, Canadian bands Waking Eyes, Liptonians and Dukhs. Alexander has conducted for the Queen of England, for former President Jimmy Carter, and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor Conductor Julian Pellicano has recently made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall performing with pianist Boris Berman and members of the Yale Philharmonia, he conducted premiere performances of a new opera by Martin Bresnick at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and made his South American debut with the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil). Other recent appearances include concerts with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony, and Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble. From 2009 - 2013, Julian served as Music Director of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra in Cambridge, MA (USA). At the Yale School of Music, Pellicano was Assistant Conductor of the Yale Philharmonia, assisting Music Director Shinik Hahm as well as guest conductors Sir Neville Marriner, Helmuth Rilling, Reinbert de Leeuw and Peter Oundjian. Recognized for his work with living composers and transparent interpretations of contemporary works, Julian has premiered over 40 new pieces and as an artist-in-residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival he conducts the Norfolk New Music Ensemble. He has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, Carl St. Clair, L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award.

PROGRAM NOTES by James Manishen

Metropolis It all started in Buenos Aires in 2008. The Metropolis restoration project, which attracted international attention, began with the surprise discovery of a longforgotten unique version of the film, including scenes that were previously believed lost. It is these new parts that sets Metropolis apart from the earlier, substantially shorter 1988 and 2001 versions. Against the breath-taking science fiction background, the human element has been given a more prominent role, adding a different slant to the storyline. The music plays a crucial role in the reconstructed montage of the premiere version, the primary source being the original score by Gottfried Huppertz. Political and economic power in Metropolis centres on one person: from the ‘New Tower of Babel,’ Joh Fredersen reigns like an absolute monarch over Upper Town and Lower Town. Perceiving himself as the ‘brain,’ the ruler considers people as mere ‘hands’ in the machinery. The human aspect - love and friendship, rebellion and revenge - is still powerful enough to shake the foundations of the futuristic city’s technological world.

Did you

Know...

The rich and powerful reside in Upper Town. If they are not playing sports in a gigantic stadium, their sons are being entertained by charming companions in the Eternal Gardens. This is the world where Freder lives, the ruler’s only son.

When Maria takes working children on a surprise visit to this paradise, Freder falls in love with her gentle beauty. He decides to see her world and the subterranean machinery seems a Moloch to him. Aghast, Freder appeals to his father, albeit without avail. Joh gets a ruthless henchman to tail Freder.

In the face of an imminent worker’s uprising, Fredersen consults the inventor Rotwang, his onetime rival. Rotwang shows him his secret creation, a robot he has built to replace Hel, Freder’s mother, which Rotwang had previously lost to Federsen. Fredersen makes a plan: the machine woman is to replace Maria and manipulate the workers. Rotwang pretends to agree but his real aim is revenge. He wants the fake Maria to destroy the city and Fredersen’s son. Rotwang kidnaps Maria and transfers her likeness to the machine person, making her into both a ruthless agitator and a lascivious seductress. The false Maria challenges Freder’s love and starts the cataclysmic worker’s rebellion. The heart machine is destroyed and the resulting flood threatens to drown the Lower Town. In the sweeping finale, Freder and the real Maria get back together and save the children from drowning. The mob goes after the machine woman and burns her at the stake. The scheming inventor also dies in the battle. Ruler Fredersen and foreman Groth seal the reconciliation between the workers and the ruling class with a handshake: ‘the heart must be the mediator between brain and hands.’

• Adjusting for inflation, the budget to create Metropolis would cost about $300 million today. • Over 37,000 extras were involved in the making of the film. • Metropolis was so influential on Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster that they named their character's city after it. • The robot of this film inspired the look for C-3PO in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).

PROGRAM NOTES by James Manishen

Requiem Giuseppe Verdi b. Roncole, nr Busseto, Italy / October 9 or 10, 1813 d. Milan / January 27, 1901 Composed: 1873-1874 First performance: May 22, 1874 (Milan), conducted by the composer Last WSO performance: 2008; Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor

The Mass was actually written but the premiere, scheduled on the first anniversary of Rossini’s death, was cancelled since the performers could not be secured. The first-ever performance took place September 11, 1988 in Stuttgart with Helmut Rilling conducting. The Rossini Mass is significant since Verdi’s Libera me had been discovered in 1871 by his respected friend Albert Mazzucato, a teacher at the Milan Conservatory who was so moved, he urged Verdi to compose a whole Mass of his own at some point in the future.

Poet, playwright and novelist Alessandro Manzoni was a hero to Verdi and a dominant figure in Giuseppe Verdi Alessandro Manzoni 19th-century Italy. His work galvanized the Italian soul, Throughout his life, Verdi was an especially through his historical impassioned patriot and ardent member novel I promessi sposi (The of the Risorgimento, the 19th-century Betrothed), which also became a de ideological and literary movement facto stylebook to unite the dedicated to arousing Italian pride in a country’s many dialects - similar to quest to free Italy from foreign domination Luther’s translation of the Bible and to unite the country politically. As for the linguistically chaotic times his life progressed Verdi quickly became in Germany. Verdi called a hero to the cause and, through his Manzoni’s novel “the finest in all operas, its most illustrious advocate. ages which has issued from the human mind.” Verdi’s early operas often ran afoul of the political censors who realized that Verdi and Manzoni met in 1868. opera could mobilize national pride, perhaps to subversion. Verdi’s Nabucco of Verdi wrote “I would have knelt before him if men worshipped 1842 contained a section that slipped through, going on to become a rallying men.” When Manzoni died at age 87 on May 22, 1873, Verdi was cry for Italy’s freedom fighters – the devastated, refusing in grief to famous Va, pensiero chorus of the leave his home. and the premiere, six weeks later, was an immediate success. A tour was then organized, in which seven performances in Paris in 1874, eight in London in 1875 and soldout performances in Vienna were all met with enthusiastic acclaim. Verdi was a man of the theatre and an agnostic. Though a much argued topic, the identification of the Manzoni Requiem as an operain-concert is a valid one, for Verdi infused the Requiem with all the resources and inspiration found in his greatest operas to produce a concert work more about patriotism and humanism than religious testament. As the language of the theatre was Verdi’s most natural gift, in the Requiem he seizes all the elements of musical potential within and outside of the texts to extract every trace of drama, as in the thundering Dies irae (Day of Wrath), the sensuous writing for solo voices, richly detailed orchestral scoring and vivid choral styles. In seven large movements, Verdi’s Requiem follows the texts closely as the work unfolds. The opening Requiem aeternam is serene and solemn, the longing chorus invoking departed souls leading on to the moving Kyrie eleison and its call for divine compassion. The brilliant Dies irae occupies one-third the work’s length. The Offertorio overflows with song in its swaying rhythm. The Sanctus explodes from the gate, leading to a striking fugue for divided chorus. The Lux aeterna contains some of Verdi’s most ethereal scoring, while the concluding Libera me is an unforgettable multi-part setting that seals this masterpiece, of which Brahms described his Italian colleague’s efforts as - “a work of genius.”
