MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR As we head into the final weeks of the 2014-2015 season, there are still many wonderful performances to anticipate. After Nobu’s wonderful performances here in the past, I am looking forward to hearing him perform Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. I also look forward to watching The Circus. Charlie Chaplin’s films are presented at their best with a live performance by the WSO. I am also intrigued by the dance performances we will be able to see. Rusalka’s performances are always a treat and we hear very good things about the Ballroom with a Twist program. By now you have seen the brochure for the 2015-2016 season, and you have doubtlessly found many concerts that are appealing. The season offers a wonderful balance of exciting Pops concerts, great Classics, new music, Kid’s Concerts, exploratory SoundBytes concerts, Matinees and Specials. There is truly something to suit every taste. The benefits of purchasing before the Early Bird Deadline of May 29th include the best possible prices and the chance to win two tickets to any place in North America that Air Canada flies. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra continues to count on your support as ticket purchasers and donors to make it possible for the WSO to serve the community in so many ways. As you renew your subscription, consider adding a donation to help the WSO with its important work in our community. This spring if you make a donation of $100 or more, you will receive a special thank you gift from the WSO in addition to your full charitable receipt. Those of us who love our symphony orchestra want to ensure that this resource is available for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. We can do this by encouraging attendance at WSO concerts, by making annual donations, and by considering the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in our estate planning. By making the WSO a beneficiary of the remainder of an RRSP, life insurance policy, or simply by adding them to your will as a charitable beneficiary, you are expressing your desire to see this art form flourish in our community for the benefit of future generations.

Timothy E. Burt, CFA President and Chair of the Board Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra April – May 2015 I OVERTURE 3

CONDUCTORS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).

Following on from his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his ninth season as music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander led the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting masterclasses, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor In the fall of 2014, Julian Pellicano began his second season as resident conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, where he leads the orchestra in a wide variety of programs throughout the year. He has worked with the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. In addition, Julian conducted the premiere of Martin Bresnick’s critically acclaimed opera My Friend's Story at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and conducted at Carnegie Hall with the Yale Philharmonia Orchestra. Recognized for his work with living composers and transparent interpretations of contemporary works, he has premiered over 40 new pieces and as an artist in residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, he conducts the Norfolk Contemporary Ensemble. Julian has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, Carl St. Clair, L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award. Beyond his position with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Julian also serves as music director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Photographer: Nardella Photography Inc.

MTS RISING STARS CONCERT

Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra

Paul Williamson, piano

Founded in 1923, the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestras (WYO) are the oldest in Canada. The aim of our founding fathers was to provide young and aspiring musicians with the opportunity to play music in an orchestral setting.

Paul Williamson is a first year piano student studying under Dr. David Moroz in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Manitoba. He is an award winner at the Provincial and National level, recently receiving first prize in the piano division of the FCMF National Music Festival this past August. For the past three summers he has been chosen as one of six Canadian pianists to attend the Morningside Music Bridge program, held at Mt. Royal University in Calgary. Paul has had the opportunity to support and play for several outreach programs including the Bakerview Music Academy, Hope for Korah, and Communitas Supportive Care Society.

We offer an innovative and stimulating program to youth musicians between the ages of 9 and 21. The WYO are currently organized into three orchestral groups, the Youth Strings, Youth Concert Orchestra and Youth Symphony Orchestra based upon musical ability. A central part of the program is the annual tour and the two annual public concerts each year. We have close ties to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, which sees WSO musicians working together with our members and WYO students attending WSO concerts throughout the year. A recent addition to the program is an exchange weekend with the Thunder Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra. The result is a thriving organization with over 170 members.

Claire Ploughman, marimba Claire Ploughman is a Grade 12 student at Oak Park High school. She began playing percussion in Grade 6 school band, and has been studying with Victoria Sparks for the past 3.5 years. In 2012, as winner of the Young Soloist Competition, Claire very fortunately had the opportunity to play with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on a tour of Winnipeg high schools. She is thrilled to be able to play with them again, this time as winner of the Rising Stars Competition, and is very excited to play onstage at the Centennial Concert Hall.

Christina Thanisch-Smith, soprano Since the age of nine, Christina has loved to sing. She began voice lessons in 2006 with Phyllis Thomson, and has continued to grow and excel under her direction. Christina has won four trophies for outstanding performances in the Winnipeg Music Festival, as well as received the Gold Medal Award from the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest mark in Manitoba on her last three vocal examinations. She attends Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, where under the direction of Vic Pankratz, sings in three choral ensembles. In Fall 2015, Christina plans to attend the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Music and hopes to one day fulfill her dream of singing professionally. 8

OVERTURE I April – May 2015

Lynlee Wolstencroft, soprano Lynlee Wolstencroft obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in 2014 and is currently completing a Post Baccalaureate in Music Performance at the University of Manitoba, where she is enrolled in the Advanced Opera Studies program. She has worked with many local classical music institutions, including Manitoba Opera, Manitoba Underground Opera, and Canzona Baroque Choir.

Jillian Bonner, alto Jillian Bonner is a mezzo-soprano from Saint John, New Brunswick. She completed a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Dalhousie University in 2011, and will be graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Master of Music in Voice Performance in 2015. Upcoming roles include “Hansel” in Hansel & Gretel, with Little Opera Company.

Aaron Hutton, tenor In previous seasons, tenor Aaron Hutton has been a featured soloist with the WSO in Orff's Carmina Burana, two Musical Discoveries concerts, and in Send in the Clowns: the music of Stephen Sondheim. This summer, Aaron will be joining the cast of Les Misérables at Rainbow Stage, which will mark his tenth show with the theatre.

Paul Winkelmans, baritone Paul Winkelmans, baritone, is currently studying with Mel Braun at the University of Manitoba, pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. In addition to University of Manitoba productions, Paul also sings with chamber choir Camerata Nova and serves as a choral scholar at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

The Rat Pack is Back!

Lon Bronson, conductor

Drew Anthony, appearing as Dean Martin

Throughout his career, Lon Bronson has been one of the most highly sought after musicians in the country, functioning as musical director, conductor, arranger, orchestrator and composer for national TV, headline performers, production shows, and large scale corporate events. In 2006, he was nominated for an Emmy for Musical Direction. He has performed with: Sheena Easton, The Temptations, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Celine Dion, Jerry Lewis, The Four Tops, Gloria Estefan, David Foster, Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Frankie Valli, Bobby Vinton, Luther Vandross, Don Henley, Wayne Newton, Michael Amante and Diana Ross. He has guest conducted with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Concert Orchestra. Currently, Lon is the Musical Director and Band Leader for the Vegas production of The Rat Pack is Back!, having also worked with the companies in San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, and Atlantic City. The Lon Bronson All-Star Band currently holds the record for the longest running band in Las Vegas history.

Since he received his B.F.A. from the Mannes College of Music Jazz Division in New York City, Drew Anthony has established himself as one of the finest jazz singers in the Tri-State area. He has produced shows that have been successful on many stages ranging from the Shubert Theater, the Intermezzo Night Club in the Foxwoods Resort & Casino and the OpSail CT Tall Ship Event. He has recorded three CDs live, the first of which is entitled You Don’t Know Me, which includes blues pianist Junior Mance on the title song. He has studied jazz voice with internationally known jazz recording artists Sheila Jordan, Jackie Paris, and classically with Munich’s Bavarian State Opera tenor, John Kuhn.

Tom Wallek, appearing as Joey Bishop Tom Wallek is a Brooklyn born comedian, actor, and impressionist currently appearing in the long running Viva Las Vegas show at the Stratosphere hotel in Las Vegas. Voted the funniest in his high school class, he learned early on making people laugh was a lot of fun. After a four-year hitch in the US Navy, the comedy bug hit hard. Tom started performing at the world famous Comedy Store trying to build an act of jokes mixed with impressions. In 1984, Tom moved to Las Vegas where he met and became friends with Sandy Hackett, son of legendary comedian Buddy Hackett and host of a showcase at the Mint Hotel. Small clubs and venues followed. In 1991, Tom landed a part in Comedy Cabaret at the Maxim. From there he met the producer of Viva Las Vegas Dick Feeney, who cast Tom in the show. He has held it full time since. In May of 2005, Sandy asked Tom if he would be interested in the part of Joey Bishop in the Rat Pack is Back!. Tom being an impressionist, jumped into the role and has been performing it ever since. 12

OVERTURE I April – May 2015

Kyle Diamond, appearing as Sammy Davis, Jr. Kyle comes from a musical family. His father was a pianist who fronted his own band, his grandfather a guitarist, and his brother, Kenny Davis, is a very talented and respected musician who has played with some of the greats from the Motown era and toured with the Ellington band. As a teenager, Kyle co-founded what would become a very popular Cleveland area band, The Pacesetters, and later another group, Phantasy, which performed in nightclubs around the country. Most recently Kyle has found a home performing in the casinos of Las Vegas while continuing his love of songwriting. He is thrilled to join the company of The Rat Pack is Back!.

Brian Duprey, appearing as Frank Sinatra You’ve probably seen Brian Duprey on FOX TV’s Performing As. Brian won $20,000 portraying his idol, Frank Sinatra. Talent judge Damon Elliott (music producer of Mya, Beyoncé, and Jessica Simpson) was blown away the first time he saw Brian perform. It was like he was watching ‘Young Blue Eyes’ perform. Television viewers agreed and thousands flocked to FOX’s website to compliment his uncanny likeness to Sinatra’s own singing voice. Singing since the age of six and becoming captivated with Sinatra’s voice by age 13, Brian has always felt connected to the golden era of music. From his singing days in high school variety shows to doing stand-up comedy, it took Brian until he was an undergraduate at Fairfield University to really discover his passion for jazz and swing music. Today, Brian stands alone as the number one Frank Sinatra performer in the world. His singing and acting talents in Las Vegas and Performing Arts Theaters across the country sets the The Rat Pack Is Back! apart from the competition.

Yet the title really does capture the overall feeling of this great work, especially the grandly imposing presence of the piano writing stated right from the beginning and resoundingly affirmed throughout the first movement. What is your favourite piece of music to play? I'd have to say the Bach cello suites - at the moment, especially the 6th Sarabande. His writing is so clear and heartfelt that sometimes I feel like the music is just flowing right out of my own soul! What advice would you give to aspiring musicians? Listen to music as much as you can. There is more than a lifetime's supply of inspiring and exciting music out there. Who is your favourite composer? I think I'll have to go with good old J.S. Bach on this one. When attending a concert, what makes a great performance stand out? If you can tell that the performers are truly enjoying and appreciating the music to its full potential, I'll most likely be having a good time too.

What is your most memorable moment performing with the WSO? My first time playing at the Westman Centennial Auditorium in Brandon. I spent many years as a student going to hear the WSO play, and it was a really special moment to have achieved my dream and be on that same stage. What is your guilty pleasure? I started playing banjo and dobro in a bluegrass band last year called “Hay Fever.” It’s been really fun to learn to play some new instruments, and to discover a whole new genre of music. Where did you receive your musical training/education? I was lucky to have grown up in Brandon where they have a strong music program at the University. I continued my undergraduate studies in Brandon and later moved to Montreal where I did my graduate degree at McGill.
