MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we make our way through the musical season, I am always struck by the huge diversity in programs the WSO provides for the community. In this upcoming series of concerts we move through Strauss’ glorious Four Last Songs with soprano Joni Henson, to the full symphonic splendour of Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 in E-flat major (Romantic). This is a concert to satisfy the hearts of the most dedicated lovers of symphonic music, or for those that have an interest in the ultimate symphonic experience where the full orchestra is put through the most demanding of technical and expressive repertoire. As audience members, we can immerse ourselves in the rich glory of the music. You cannot help but be deeply moved by experiencing this music live. Then we move to a wonderful exploration of great music developed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Beyond the Score® series. This year’s presentation features Edward Elgar’s much loved Enigma Variations. The work is based on musical sketches of fourteen people in the composer’s life, and the wonderful material and research provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provides exceptional clarity and insight that adds immensely to the experience of the music. We continue our partnership with the Philharmonic Choir in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, and then we explore the musical genius of Rufus Wainwright. This is a marvellous opportunity to experience the great musical talent and extraordinary song writing that Rufus Wainwright brings to our stage. We move then to a world premiere of Larysa Kuzmenko’s Golden Harvest, an oratorio honouring the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. We welcome Andriana Chuchman, Manitoba’s globe-trotting opera star, back to her home orchestra, and also feature the ever popular Carmina Burana. We end this portion of the season with a delightful concert for children. It is indeed a journey of musical discovery to move through the year with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. During this year’s New Music Festival, I read a comment somewhere (I cannot remember the location or source) that “art decorates space, and music decorates time.”While I don’t think that “decorate” is quite the right word, I love the idea that through music, we are able to add colour, dimension, passion, and joy to the seconds, minutes, and hours of our lives. The WSO is pleased to provide these exceptional musical moments to add beauty to your life. Enjoy your WSO enhanced time.

CONDUCTORS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).

Following on from his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth season as music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander led the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting masterclasses, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall. Photographer: Grajewski Fotograph Inc.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano’s voracious musical appetite makes him a formidable interpreter of the symphonic repertoire. He is currently resident conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Artist-in-Residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music festival, and music director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Pellicano has built his career by following an unconventional path. The creation, with Dr. Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique first brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. From 2009 to 2013 he served as music director of the Longy School of Music Conservatory Orchestra where he established a rigorous and distinctive new orchestral program. Pellicano has conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony, The Kallisti Ensemble, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. He has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, and Carl St. Clair. As a young musician he played drums, percussion, organ, and accordion in rock, blues and jazz groups. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without any formal training. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award. He premiered Martin Bresnick’s critically acclaimed opera My Friend's Story at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and conducted at Carnegie Hall with the Yale Philharmonia Orchestra. PROGRAM NOTES by James Manishen

Four Last Songs Richard Strauss b. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864 d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany / September 8, 1949 Composed: 1948 First performance: May 22, 1950 (London) conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler with Kirsten Flagstad as soloist Last WSO performance: 1992; Lawrence Leighton Smith, conductor; Elizabeth Knighton Printy, soprano The bombing of Dresden and the loss of many friends weighed heavily on Richard Strauss during the war, even though he was shielded from its ravages at his villa in the Bavarian Alps where he had been living since 1935. Fearing the Denazification hearings that began in October 1945, Strauss and his wife Pauline decided to move to Switzerland where they remained for the next four years. Officially exonerated in June 1948, the increasingly frail composer stayed in Switzerland for medical treatment and returned to Bavaria in May 1949. His Four Last Songs date from this period that also included his Oboe Concerto and Duet Concertino for clarinet, bassoon and strings. The aging Strauss occupied his time in Switzerland reading Goethe, studying his score of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and reflecting on his long life as a guardian of German Romantic musical tradition and never apologized that he always had one foot in the previous century as a consistent traditionalist opposed to modernism, though with enough decorous irony to underscore his own time. Strauss had read Eichendorff’s poem Im Abendrot in 1946, in which an aging couple reflects on the lifetime they’ve spent together, viewing the setting sun and asking “Could this

perchance be death?”Soon after, Strauss read a collection of poems by Hermann Hesse and decided to make a five-song setting for soprano and orchestra concluding with the Eichendorff poem which he had set in May 1948. Completing the entire set by September less one Hesse song that was never finished, Four Last Songs became Strauss’ final work.

blanketed additions, deletions, orchestrations and responses before the work was premiered. Began January 2, 1874, just two days after finishing his Third Symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic read through the score a year later and deemed only the first movement fit for public performance, the rest “idiotic.”Deeply hurt yet busy enough with his teaching and organ The Four Last Songs metaphorically reflect performing commitments, Bruckner on death, looking back and ahead, waited until 1878 to persevere with worldly and wise rather than angry or the Fourth, completing it over a fearful. At the end of the rehearsal entire composing life. the sheepish composer pressed a coin into Richter’s hand and told Symphony No. 4 him to buy a beer “to my health.” Anton Bruckner b. Ansfelden / September 4, 1824 d.Vienna / October 11, 1896 Composed: 1874; revised in 1878-1881 and 1887-1888 First performance: February 20, 1881 (Vienna) conducted by Hans Richter Last WSO performance: 2001: Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, conductor

The music of Anton Bruckner is unique, and inexorably bonded to both its creator and his own Creator. Descended from generations of Catholic peasants, Bruckner lived in a seemingly religious ecstasy, sparing himself as he could from the necessities of everyday life with a guileless humility and in constant fear that God might condemn him for not using his time and talent to his fullest capacity.Wagner adored the simplicity of this extraordinary man, and Bruckner returned the favour with Wagner becoming his musical mentor. It took Bruckner 14 years to create the Fourth Symphony. Endless revisions, trials, tribulations and insecurities

The premiere on February 20, 1881 was an immediate success. Bruckner was called to the stage after every movement and the Scherzo had to be encored. For the first time in 25 years in Vienna, Bruckner was receiving his due. Richter wore the coin on his watch chain for the rest of his life as a memento of the rehearsal – “of a day when I wept,” he said. The Fourth Symphony is among Bruckner’s most fervently argued works, in both spirit and construction. As always in his music, one senses the “cathedral in sound” as popularly ascribed.Time, space, the long controlled climaxes, repetitions and occasional yet endearing stammering produce a matchless bonding of grandeur of expression to simplicity of outline. Those who take Bruckner on his own terms receive a special hour of a purity of discourse achieved by few others in the history of music.

church and its morals in favour of the lustiness of everyday life were found.Written by a band of presumed ecclesiastics, the poems depicted a vivid if likely literary view of medieval life set in an amorphous language with some primitive notation indicating that some were sung. Under the title of Carmina Burana (“Songs of Beuren”), the poems were published in 1847 by Johann Andreas Schmeller. When Orff discovered the lyrics in the 1930s he immediately saw its theatrical potential, originally figuring on a spectacle for the stage but with costumes sets and scenery stripped away. Philosophically, Orff wanted to fuse the intellect with the primal creative spirit of the poems, establishing a tension in the story to be felt through structural simplicity, primitive rhythmic energy and immediately impactful melody. Orff’s idea was to draw listeners to their instinctual awareness of “oneness with the universe.”The experience was to be viscerally felt, without any traces of Romantic symphonic argument or rich orchestral timbre. Whether a Medieval play on morals, a set of risqué songs, a philosophical statement or a blending of all of these, Carmina Burana is immensely entertaining. As the poems had no known associating music, Orff’s settings of the 24 he chose are all original. The work has a prologue and an epilogue that flank three large sections. While these sections proclaim the libidinous songs of lusty life, the prologue and epilogue (containing the same music) warn against indulgent living, the chorus standing as the bond to eternal morality at the outset and the close. As the wheel of fate turns (“Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi”), so too can it grind sensual pleasure to dust.
