HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE™ STRAUSS, RAVEL & MORE THE TENORS MESSIAH THE SNOWMAN

wso.ca I 204-949-3999

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR There is magic in the air at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and it is not just because we are looking forward to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone TM at the end of November. There are many magical moments coming up in concerts this November and December. This music will be part of the 2017 holiday celebrations of so many adults and children in Manitoba. These concerts transport us to different epochs in time and allow us to access the genius and beauty of music composed decades and even centuries ago. In mid-November, Five By Design takes us back to the Mad Men Era with exciting new arrangements of music by Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Wayne Newton, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. In early December, international conducting sensation Jun Märkl takes us on a journey to Vienna with the music of Strauss and Ravel. Holiday celebrations begin in earnest with the delightful presentation of The Snowman. A week later The Tenors deploy their mellow charms and wonderful voices to bring us fully into the holiday spirit. On Sunday, December 10th, we host the most traditional of Christmas Celebrations with a concert guaranteed to charm people of all ages. Steve Bell will join us on December 12th with a new and thoughtful take on the mystery and beauty of the Christmas story. Then the timeless texts and choruses from Handel’s Messiah inspire us anew with the true spirit of the season. There is something there to suit every musical taste for the holiday season. The WSO also takes the lovely Manitoba Hydro Holiday Tour to Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, and Brandon to spread some seasonal cheer to other parts of Manitoba. As you will notice in the centre pages of the Overture magazine this month, the WSO is launching a campaign to build endowment resources to provide long-term, stable support for Sistema Winnipeg. This program changes the lives of children and young people in Winnipeg and provides the seeds for a hopeful future. Gifts to the endowment campaign are eligible for matching from the Government of Canada, and we encourage you to join in making a generous gift to a program that works a magic of its own in the lives of Winnipeg inner city children and their families. All the best to you and your loved ones for a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year from all of us at the WSO.

CONDUCTORS AND COMPOSERS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual Winnipeg New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor A conductor with expansive musical interests, Julian Pellicano is a formidable interpreter of the symphonic repertoire. The Winnipeg Free Press says of Pellicano,“His versatility is truly astonishing…”Marking his fifth season with the WSO, the 2017-2018 season includes appearances at the inaugural edition of the Ciclo de Música Contemporánea in Oviedo, Spain, a return to the Louisiana Philharmonic and his first appearance conducting the Royal Winnipeg Ballet among many other highlights. The creation, with Dr. Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique first brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. Conductor of the Norfolk Contemporary Ensemble since 2008, Pellicano is recognized for his transparent interpretations of contemporary music. He studied conducting as a fellow at the Yale School of Music. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without typical classical training, and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden and at the Yale School of Music and was a member of the critically acclaimed Yale Percussion Group. Pellicano also holds a degree in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University. Harry Stafylakis, Composer-in-Residence, WNMF Festival Director Harry Stafylakis (b. 1982) hails from Montreal and is now based in NYC. He is the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Composer-In-Residence and Festival Director of the WSO's Winnipeg New Music Festival. His works have been performed by the American Composers Orchestra, the Toronto,Winnipeg,Vancouver, Spokane, Stamford,Victoria, and PEI symphonies, McGill Chamber Orchestra, ICE, Contemporaneous, Mivos Quartet, Quatuor Bozzini, and Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, among others. Awards include the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the ASCAP Foundation’s Leonard Bernstein Award, four SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers, and grants from the Canada Council, NYSCA, and New Music USA. He is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the NYC composer collective ICEBERG New Music. Stafylakis holds degrees from McGill University and The Graduate Center, CUNY, and lectures at the City College of New York. His doctoral research, supported by SSHRC, examines rhythm and meter in progressive metal. www.hstafylakis.com 4

Death and Transfiguration

Richard Strauss b. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864 d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany / September 8, 1949 Composed: 1888-1889 First performance: June 21, 1890 (Eisenach), conducted by the composer Last WSO performance: 1997; Bramwell Tovey, conductor Strauss was just 26 when he completed Death and Transfiguration, a time when composing was actually his avocation. By then he was a rising star as a conductor, assisting the famous Hans von Bülow at Meiningen, conducting in leading opera houses and cementing acclaim with a guest appearance conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the best orchestra of the time. During his first conducting post, Strauss met Alexander Ritter, a violinist, music maven and self-proclaimed poet who introduced Strauss to the incendiary Romanticism of Wagner. Strauss’father, an acclaimed horn player, did not want his son exploring Wagner and Liszt, preferring him to grow within the classical and early Romantic realms of Mozart and Beethoven respectively.Wagner was not only a revelation to Strauss Junior but a spark wherein a literary idea could inspire a vivid tone poem for orchestra. Death and Transfiguration was the third Strauss composed after this wake-up call, the others being Macbeth (1886) and Don Juan (1888). Strauss conceived his own story for Death and Transfiguration, depicting the final hours of a man (artist) who had spent his life searching for the highest ideals. Lying in bed breathing heavily, he dreams of his past quests, his childhood, goals and absence of perfection in his strivings, achievable by no man. At the fateful hour, his soul departs in serene comfort as the ideal finally arrives in the eternal cosmos.

OVERTURE I November – December 2017

It is an education program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in partnership with Seven Oaks School Division and Winnipeg School Division. Inspired by Venezuela’s music education system, El Sistema. Dedicated to enriching the lives of students in inner city schools. The WSO aspires to add students from other inner city schools subject to available funding. It launched in 2011 with 30 students. Today there are 160 children in the program, from age 6 to 14 and from grades 1 to 8. Children come to Sistema 3 hours a day, after regular school hours, 5 days a week, 10 months of the year. Students are taught by trained music educators and professional musicians, including members of the WSO. Daily schedules include nutritional snacks, group lessons (string, woodwind, brass), orchestra, choir, mentorship, music theory and dance.

Children start in the program in grade 1 and have the opportunity to continue to grade 12. Sistema Winnipeg does not charge participants. Currently it is wholly supported through an annual campaign with assistance from the WSO community. Sistema families may attend WSO family concerts without charge.

Michael Nozick and Family Donates $500,000 to Sistema Winnipeg Funds of this magnitude will support 16 children a year in the program, each and every year.

For the Michael Nozick family, a $500,000 donation to Sistema Winnipeg is a gift that will keep giving back. It’s the kind of investment that he knows will make a difference to Sistema students and their families, but will also have an impact to the broader community. “These kids come from high risk communities. When they have a program like this to give them structure and purpose, they flourish. The community benefits because we’re giving the students a foundation that will serve them throughout their lives,” says Mr. Nozick. Mr. Nozick’s donation is eligible for matching through the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund. Therefore his $500,000 has the potential to become $1,000,000.

“These kids come from high risk communities. When they have a program like this to give them structure and purpose, they flourish.” - Michael Nozick 28

OVERTURE I November – December 2017

More than that, these funds stabilize a program that was existing year to year having to raise every single dollar from donations. Now with the guaranteed income from this endowment fund, Mr. Nozick has helped to ensure that the program will continue to exist. “We are tremendously grateful to Michael Nozick and his family for this ground breaking gift to our Sistema Winnipeg program,” remarks WSO Executive Director, Trudy Schroeder. “Michael has been leading a campaign to help us raise sufficient endowment funds so that our Sistema program can continue, and he has shown his leadership with this first important gift to that campaign.”

I strongly encourage other engaged citizens of Winnipeg to support this campaign. - Michael Nozick

Tannis Richardson Boosts Sistema Winnipeg with a $500,000 Donation Tannis Richardson has been an ardent supporter of Sistema Winnipeg right from the very beginning. Her love of the program and the difference it is making to children in two of Winnipeg’s inner city schools has inspired her to donate $500,000 toward an endowment fund to support the program indefinitely. “El Sistema is one of the greatest gifts we can give these children,” says Mrs. Richardson. “Their grades improve, their self-esteem improves and their future prospects are made so much brighter.” Mrs. Richardson has been involved with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since its very first concert at the old Winnipeg Auditorium which she attended with her late husband, George. She hasn’t missed a WSO season since. She has been a strong supporter of the Sistema Winnipeg program

since it started seven years ago, regularly attending the winter and spring concerts and encouraging the students at every step. Mrs. Richardson’s gift will be eligible for matching funds from the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund, resulting in a potential $1,000,000 addition to the Sistema endowment fund. “The WSO owes so much gratitude to Tannis Richardson for her many years of support – 70 years to be exact. This latest gift to Sistema is truly a legacy gift, and will help ensure that the Sistema program exists for years to come,” says Trudy Schroeder, WSO Executive Director.“This kind of gift means the lives of children will be transformed. I can’t think of a better investment.”

November – December 2017 I OVERTURE 29

What impact does Sistema have? Sistema Winnipeg has been part of a University of Manitoba study since 2011. The study has found: Math and reading levels are improving compared to expected grade levels. School suspensions dropped from 10 to 1 in the first two years. Students are scoring high on tests for their own self-concept. Chronic absenteeism (missing at least 10% of school) dropped by 10% in first two years of Sistema. Students have a sense of belonging in their peer groups and school. 100% of parents believe their child is more confident. School administrations reports that families are choosing to stay in the neighbourhood to keep their child in Sistema. 98% of parents are more optimistic of their child’s future and the program GIVES its students a future of alternatives. Sistema students are exceeding expectations on comprehensive music testing. Our entire society benefits when youth in these core neighbourhoods flourish and become leaders in their communities.

To maintain the existing program through grade 12 and to reach targeted future student levels, the WSO intends/needs to establish a separate endowment fund dedicated to Sistema to supplement the annual campaign. The funded Initial Founder commitments of Tannis Richardson and the Michael Nozick family are given on the understanding that sufficient additional long-term endowment money will be raised from the public at large, and (as in other Canadian cities having Sistema programs) assistance in the form of both outright grants, matching funds and/or long-term committed support from Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments as well as continuing generosity from donors supporting the annual campaign.

What are Sistema’s immediate needs? Currently funded by an annual fundraising campaign plus WSO musicians’ time. Approximate current cost to add/maintain each student to the program is $3000/year. Target is to add 15-30 students per year through grade 12 (currently, seven years into the program, children are enrolled in grades 1 through 8.) Only 10 new students could be accommodated in 2017 due to limited funds. Without additional funding, the Sistema program may be unable to continue as planned.

Handel traveled to Dublin that November and after the disappointments of London, took much pleasure in being enthusiastically received by the Irish press. Preparations for the premiere went on throughout the winter of 1742. Choristers were recruited from Dublin churches and excitement elevated to fever pitch. The premiere on April 13, 1742 was a triumph. Handel couldn’t wait to take it home to London. In London however, it was felt that Messiah’s texts would be compromised by performances in theatres propagated by actors of questionable morals. Messiah received a few subsequent performances but had to wait until more liberal times arrived in 1750 when Handel staged a performance to benefit London’s Foundling Hospital, a charity for abandoned children. Such good will further ensured Messiah’s success, inspiring annual performances for the Foundling Hospital up until Handel’s death in 1759. It was the last work Handel directed, just eight days before his death and is the only major Baroque work that has an unbroken performance tradition from the time of its creation to the present day.

Jane Fingler, soprano

Peter John Buchan, tenor

Soprano Jane Fingler is quickly becoming a fixture on Winnipeg’s choral music scene. As a veteran member of Camerata Nova, Jane has performed music old and new, from Michael Praetorius’ Mass for Christmas Morning to newly commissioned works such as Partita by Caroline Shaw and last year’s Taken by Andrew Balfour. In Polycoro, she has performed a wide variety of early music as well as new music, including challenging works by Meredith Monk, Nicholas Gilbert and Morton Feldman. As a former member of Canzona, Jane is well versed in Handel, Bach, and other luminaries of the era. With a sweet, crystalline sound and flexibility perfectly suited to the demanding runs of Baroque composers, Jane’s voice truly shines in the music of this period. Equally at home as a soloist or as part of an ensemble, she is consistently winning praise and charming audiences wherever she performs. Jane studied voice at the U of M with Donna Fletcher and received a Bachelor of Music in 2014.

PJ Buchan – a native of Winnipeg – has been involved with choral and vocal music since he joined the men and boys choir at All Saint’s Church in 1979. He has appeared as a chorister and soloist with many of Winnipeg’s foremost ensembles, including the Winnipeg Singers, Camerata Nova, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, as well as for CBC national broadcast.

Daniel Peasgood, countertenor Daniel is thrilled to be singing with Polycoro and the WSO for this year's Messiah presentation. Dan has been singing and working in Winnipeg for the past 17 years. In this time, he has sung in numerous ensembles including The Winnipeg Singers, Camerata Nova, Canzona, The Canadian Chamber Choir, Antiphony, and, most recently, Polycoro. In 2015, Dan was part of Manitoba Underground Opera's presentation of Massenet's Cendrillon. He also had the opportunity to sing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in their presentation of Monteverdi's Vespers in 2017. Happy Holidays to all and peace on earth!

PJ has been a competitor for both the Rose Bowl and the Tudor Bowl at the Winnipeg Music Festival, has appeared as a soloist in London’s Millennium Centre and Prague’s St Vitus’s Cathedral, and was the guest soloist at the February 2005 Reykjavik Winter Festival. Recently, PJ has been involved in a number of opera productions with Winnipeg’s Musical Offering and Little Opera Company.

Kris Kornelsen, baritone Baritone Kris Kornelsen is no stranger to the music scene in Winnipeg. He has sung as both a soloist and chorister with The Winnipeg Singers and Canzona and has enjoyed guest appearances with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Mennonite Oratorio Choir and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. Kris has performed as soloist in performances of Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, and Bach’s St. John and St. Matthew’s Passions. He is known for his musicianship and ability to actively communicate with his audiences. He brings a refreshingly bright yet warm vocal quality marked by sensitive phrasing to his performances. Kris is also very active singing various styles of music, from classical to jazz, gospel and pop with the mixed vocal quartet, Encore.

Music by Howard Blake

In 1982, Raymond Briggs’classic picture book The Snowman was adapted as a 26-minute animated film by TVC, at the time the UK’s longest established animation studio, under the direction of Dianne Jackson.

The Snowman was first televised on 26 December 1982 and has since been shown every year on Channel 4.

Having spotted the potential for creating a unique and ground-breaking animation, John Coates instructed two trusted assistant animators, Hilary Audus and Joanna Harrison, to go and buy a dozen copies of the book for the purpose of dissecting it and storyboarding the very first animatic.

In keeping with the book, the film of The Snowman is wordless and free of dialogue, except for the now iconic,“Walking in the Air” which features as part of a now timeless musical score. Both song and score were written and composed by Howard Blake, who had written the melody some years before having been inspired by a walk on a Cornish beach.

This quickly turned into a hand-drawn animation bible which became the template for the final film. John Coates’passion for bringing the book to the screen quickly caught the attention of Sir Jeremy Issacs, former Chief Executive of Channel 4, who believed that it would be a fantastic piece for the channel and stand out from the rest of its schedule.

The score for the film was originally performed by the Sinfonia of London, with ‘Walking in the Air’being sung in the film by chorister Peter Auty, often cited as a famous case of mistaken identity, as three years later the song was famously re-recorded by Welsh chorister Aled Jones in a single which reached number five in the UK charts.

Whether it’s improving their grades, enhancing coordination skills for their athletic activities, or to learn the rewarding skill of playing the piano; MYC® is the first key to getting them there.

Teaching opportunities available! For more information, please contact: Marilyn Unrau, MYCC Regional Coordinator - Western Canada 1.877.603.3MYC m.unrau@myc.com
