VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ON TOUR

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Photographer: Leif Norman

This is the final concert programme for the 70th Anniversary Season of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and there are fine concerts all the way through to the end of the season. You will not want to miss the WSO playing live with the beloved and musically ground breaking film, The Wizard of Oz. This is followed by the WSO 70th Anniversary Gala, and the spellbinding spectacle of Cirque de la Symphonie. Our final Classics Series concerts of the season on May 11 and 12 features Richard Strauss’ epic and moving work, A Hero’s Life. This will be the final weekend of Classics performances with Alexander Mickelthwate serving as the WSO’s music director. This concert gives us all an opportunity to thank Alexander for his excellent service to the WSO and to the community as a whole. We thank Alexander for the energy and passion he brought to his work with the orchestra and for the wonderful way in which he engaged with our community. His contribution will have a lasting impact on the orchestra and on the community. Following the concert, each night, there will be an opportunity for audience members to meet and thank Alexander personally on the Piano Nobile. We close the WSO’s 70th Anniversary Season with a visit from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on tour to celebrate their 100th Anniversary Season. The VSO’s appearance in Winnipeg has a special connection and relevance for the WSO because it will be conducted by Maestro Bramwell Tovey, who was the WSO’s sixth music director. He was an important musical force in Winnipeg from 1989 to 2001, and he will be remembered as the founder of the WSO’s New Music Festival. Appearing with the orchestra is internationally acclaimed violinist James Ehnes, whose early professional career was supported and nurtured by the WSO. All of us at the WSO thank you for making the orchestra part of your life in this season. We encourage you to select your concerts for the coming season and take advantage of the Early Bird savings that are available until May 13th. The WSO also has an exciting summer season from June 16 to July 4, 2018. Visit wso.ca/1819 summer for full details. Have a wonderful summer, and we will see you in September for The Asper Foundation Opening Night Gala with Emanuel Ax.

CONDUCTORS AND COMPOSERS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his twelfth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual Winnipeg New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. Alexander will begin his role as Music Director of the Oklahoma Philharmonic for the 2018-2019 Season. Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor A conductor with expansive musical interests, Julian Pellicano is a formidable interpreter of the symphonic repertoire. The Winnipeg Free Press says of Pellicano,“His versatility is truly astonishing…”Marking his fifth season with the WSO, the 2017-2018 season includes appearances at the inaugural edition of the Ciclo de Música Contemporánea in Oviedo, Spain, a return to the Louisiana Philharmonic and his first appearance conducting the Royal Winnipeg Ballet among many other highlights. The creation, with Dr. Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique first brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. Conductor of the Norfolk Contemporary Ensemble since 2008, Pellicano is recognized for his transparent interpretations of contemporary music. He studied conducting as a fellow at the Yale School of Music. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without typical classical training, and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden and at the Yale School of Music and was a member of the critically acclaimed Yale Percussion Group. Pellicano also holds a degree in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University. Harry Stafylakis, Composer-in-Residence, WNMF Festival Director Harry Stafylakis (b. 1982) hails from Montreal and is now based in NYC. He is the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Composer-In-Residence and Festival Director of the WSO's Winnipeg New Music Festival. His works have been performed by the American Composers Orchestra, the Toronto,Winnipeg,Vancouver, Spokane, Stamford,Victoria, and PEI symphonies, McGill Chamber Orchestra, ICE, Contemporaneous, Mivos Quartet, Quatuor Bozzini, and Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, among others. Awards include the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the ASCAP Foundation’s Leonard Bernstein Award, four SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers, and grants from the Canada Council, NYSCA, and New Music USA. He is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the NYC composer collective ICEBERG New Music. Stafylakis holds degrees from McGill University and The Graduate Center, CUNY, and lectures at the City College of New York. After the 1936 purge he responded with his magnificent Fifth Symphony and soon became a world figure. But the 1948 censure was too much to bear, and he decided to withhold “Life’s most magical releasing any of his substantial works moments often rush by us hastily. We feel frustrated, as for a fair hearing until after Stalin was out of the picture. Violin Concerto No. 1

In the opening Nocturne, the solo violin grows continuously from the dark string melody underneath, the centre-piece of the movement a powerful statement leading to the return of the quieter opening material to close. The wild Scherzo couldn’t be more different, recalling the similar one in the Tenth Symphony, a work Shostakovich called “about Stalin.” The Passacaglia It was déjà vu for uses the ancient variation form of a Shostakovich in 1948 as he repeating theme layering increasingly composed his Violin Concerto elaborate material on top, with No.1. He had felt the purge in deeply moving results. The Finale is a 1936 when his opera Lady stunning virtuosic display that Macbeth of Mtsensk was called “muddle”by encapsulates previous material to Soviet officialdom. Again he was close this brilliant, complex yet most condemned in 1948 in the general purge accessible masterwork.

A Hero’s Life Richard Strauss b. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864 d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany / September 8, 1949 Composed: 1898 First performance: March 3, 1899 (Frankfurt) conducted by the composer Last WSO performance: 2006, Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) was the seventh of Strauss’orchestral tone poems. As the year 1898’s most talked-about composer, his latest offering was much anticipated by press and public alike, as his earlier showpieces (Don Juan,Also sprach Zarathustra and others) were imaginative and stunningly orchestrated works that carried programmatic orchestral music to heights not experienced since Berlioz. Strauss immodestly claimed that the story was not about material heroism but the kind of heroism describing the struggles in life that lead to elevation of the soul. What emerged though turned out to be a musical self-portrait in six parts. The first three parts portray the characters: the Hero (Strauss himself, with all his pride, moods and obstinacy), his Adversaries (the critics, though Strauss doesn’t directly say so), and his Companion (beloved yet complex and manipulative wife Pauline, depicted by the solo violin). The fourth section The Hero’s Battlefield is a vividly “modern” display of uproar.Through the sustaining inspiration of the Companion over all the clashing blades and general mayhem, a triumphant finish of victory closes this battlefield of music. The fifth section The Hero’s Works of Peace holds Strauss to a mirror as themes from some of his earlier works are recalled to elevate the soul in achievement. The closing section brings back the Adversaries again with the Hero battling it out. Anger subsides as the English horn gently brings back his theme, but more strife agitates him. As he becomes consoled by the solo violin, Peace descends on his spirit and the music rapturously closes.

PROGRAM NOTES Ancestral Voices Bramwell Tovey CM OM b. Essex, England / July 11, 1953 Preparing for the Canada150 celebrations, Bramwell Tovey chose to mark the occasion with a musical gift. For the final concert of the VSO’s 2016-2017 season, he created a fourmovement song cycle, titled Ancestral Voices, which could in some way address both the commemoration of the 1867 Confederation of the “Dominion of Canada,”as well as the impact of that proclamation on people who had already been living on those same lands for hundreds, if not thousands of years. With this work, Tovey offers his thoughts on a complicated part of our shared Canadian legacy: the fraught relationship between First Nations and subsequent arrivals. Before the première performance of the work, Bramwell Tovey spoke with David Gordon Duke of The Vancouver Sun, and explained,“I was very moved by the reconciliation commission that took place a few years ago. As a fairly new Canadian I didn’t live here when the residential schools existed, but I got interested in the politics, and what a terrible thing they were. I don’t like it when artists bang political drums, but I thought I might be able to create something that reflects, if you like, the shame of it all. I don’t want to get into the controversy of cultural appropriation, so there’s no replication of First Nations music — which I’m not even qualified to attempt anyway. I’ve decide to stick entirely with non-aboriginal language; everything is actually from my own cultural tradition, if you like.” While the music and texts stem from non-aboriginal sources,Tovey was careful to seek out the perspective and advice of someone with First Nations heritage. The songs were created for and written in consultation with mezzo-soprano soloist Marion Newman, who has Kwagiulth and _ Stó:lo First Nations roots. 24

OVERTURE I April – May 2018

The text of the first song is drawn from a work of the English Romantic poet John Keats (17951821), and describes Arcady, a pastoral paradise. It was written in 1819, when the western frontier of what would become Canada was just being opened up.
