wso.ca I 204-949-3999
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR November and December have a special energy and focus for many of us in this wonderful community. Somehow, these are two months when Winnipeggers are in Winnipeg – they are not at the lake, and not in the south, they are here and ready to participate in the wonderful array of activities and concerts available for their enjoyment. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra offers a strong program of concerts to take you through to the end of 2018. On November 9th and 10th we present In Remembrance, an opportunity to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The gorgeous music and stories from that time will prepare your heart and spirit for Remembrance Day. For an upbeat energizing concert, Swing is the Thing will remind you of the great music and performers that came out of Harlem’s musical golden era. In December, we have Harry Potter™ and the gang, the timeless glory of Handel’s Messiah, a wonderful Christmas concert with Manny Tuba for the whole family on December 9th, and The Celtic Tenors on December 14th, 15th, and 16th before the orchestra starts its Christmas tradition with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Nutcracker. There are so many options this season and also some marvellous opportunities to support the orchestra and your community through gift-giving options, donations to the WSO’s Share the Music program at concerts, or by purchasing a box of Morden’s Russian Mints in the lobby. We encourage you to give yourself a gift and travel to Amsterdam with the WSO in May 2020 for the concerts and special events during our first European tour. If the travel bug hits you earlier, our WSO Travel Club is taking a trip to Italy at the end of March 2019. This may be the spring trip you have been looking for. There is a reason that Italy is at the top of the list of places people dream of visiting, and this trip offers you a chance to have a trip with a special focus on the art, music, and cuisine of Rome, Florence, Milan, and Cremona. As I look at the brochure and write about this, I think I have just convinced myself into going on this trip. More than anything, the WSO wishes you every joy of the season as you celebrate and enjoy music and time together with family members and friends during the holidays. With best wishes for health and happiness for the holidays and for the coming year,
Trudy Schroeder Executive Director Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra November – December 2018 I OVERTURE 1

PROGRAM NOTES by James Manishen
Lament for Strings Frank Bridge b. Brighton, England / February 26, 1879 d. Friston, Sussex / January 10, 1941 Composed: 1915 First WSO performance Best known as the influential teacher of composer Benjamin Britten (from age 13), Frank Bridge has become known for music that is beautifully crafted inside a distinctive impressionistic framework, often recalling Ravel but also containing dustings of the peculiarly exotic style of Frederick Delius in its use of small motives synthesized to exotic harmonies and yearning expression. Lament was composed as an elegy to a 9-year-old girl named Catherine who, with her family, perished on May 7, 1915 when a German U-Boat sank the civilian ocean liner RMS Lusitania in the Atlantic. 1,195 people were lost and the incident caused an international furor. The family had been friends of Bridge’s, and this darkly beautiful work for strings became an outlet for his personal anguish, whose pacifism was driven by the loss of family and friends during this period. The constant motion and resolutions of the music’s rising and falling two-note figures make for an intensely affecting tribute.
Violin Concerto Benjamin Britten b. Lowestoft, England / November 22, 1913 d. Aldeburgh / December 4, 1976 Composed: 1938-1939 First performance: March 29, 1940 (New York), John Barbirolli, conductor; Antonio Brosa, soloist First WSO performance As with his teacher Frank Bridge, Benjamin Britten was a committed pacifist. Following Hitler’s annexation of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939, thus ending Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of “peace for our time,”the 26-year-old Britten followed his friends, poet W.H. Auden and novelist Christopher Isherwood to America to avoid the
coming war and find a fresh artistic start. With Britten was his life-long partner, tenor Peter Pears. Settling in Brooklyn and Amityville, Long Island, the two would return to England three years later.

Shostakovich’s response was a far more compact symphony in the new Ninth – full of biting wit, economy of gesture and pointed barbs of anger under its surface. The work was one of the main reasons Shostakovich was targeted as an Enemy of the People during Stalin’s second wave of repression in 1948.

Messiah George Frideric Handel b. Halle, Prussia / February 23, 1685 d. London, England / April 14, 1759 Composed: 1741. First performance: 1742 (Dublin). The most celebrated oratorio of all time, Messiah elicits almost an involuntary response of recognition at the mere mention of its name. It is the most loved of all oratorios and for all their estimable merits, neither the Passions of Bach nor Haydn’s Creation rival Messiah’s popularity, though Mendelssohn’s Elijah was, in the 19-century, considered its equal. One feels the urge to want to sing as with no other work of its genre, as imperial melody, invention and vision are presented with the matchless proportion of a theatrical master. And for the gift of Messiah, we literally have to thank inches, when, as a young man, Handel’s life was saved after a metal frock button deflected a sword point in a duel! Yet for all the visionary qualities in the music’s progression from dark to light, the dramatic strength of Messiah comes not from telling a story. Handel’s theatrical background was inbred when he composed Messiah, but his priority was contemplation of the sacred rather than the dramatic.“I should be sorry if I only entertained them,”Handel told an admirer.“I wished to make them better.”
Messiah is an anomaly among Handel’s two dozen oratorios in that, apart from Israel in Egypt, its entire text is drawn from the Bible and is his only oratorio based on the New Testament. Messiah was also the only oratorio presented in a consecrated space during his lifetime. Not intended as part of a devotional service, Handel intended it as a middle-class entertainment with pious leanings and just a step removed from the Italian operatic style ventures he had been having success with as London’s leading composer, impresario and producer of opera. But in 1740, Handel was having trouble keeping such ventures solvent. English public taste was moving away from continental influences towards more localized entertainments, spurred on by the success of the 1728 satirical romp The Beggar’s Opera by Gay and Pepusch. Rumors abounded that Handel was finished. Handel withdrew from public life in the early months of 1741 and seldom ventured out. But that summer, he came across a small book of Biblical texts assembled by Charles Jennens, a wealthy and pretentious type but a great admirer of the composer. Handel’s imagination lit up. Rumor has it that Handel confined himself to his room, completing Messiah on September 14, 1741 in just over three weeks, but evidence shows that the Lord Lieutenant of Dublin had visited Handel early in 1741 to propose a new work for a series of Dublin charity concerts.
Handel traveled to Dublin that November and after the disappointments of London, took much pleasure in being enthusiastically received by the Irish press. Preparations for the premiere went on throughout the winter of 1742. Choristers were recruited from Dublin churches and excitement elevated to fever pitch. The premiere on April 13th 1742 was a triumph. Handel couldn’t wait to take it home to London. In London however, it was felt that Messiah’s texts would be compromised by performances in theatres propagated by actors of questionable morals. Messiah received a few subsequent performances but had to wait until more liberal times arrived in 1750 when Handel staged a performance to benefit London’s Foundling Hospital, a charity for abandoned children. Such good will further ensured Messiah’s success, inspiring annual performances for the Foundling Hospital up until Handel’s death in 1759. It was the last work Handel directed, just eight days before his death and is the only major Baroque work that has an unbroken performance tradition from the time of its creation to the present day.

Mr. Mark, entertainer
Earl Lee, conductor
His real name is Mark Cameron, but he has been known to countless kids and their families as Mr. Mark, creator of wild and wonderful music for kids to sing and dance to. Armed with a truckload of enthusiasm and a truckload of instruments, his shows are always lively and engaging!
A newly appointed Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and former RBC Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Earl Lee is a renowned Korean-Canadian performer who creates powerful, emotional experiences for audiences worldwide. Earl’s passion for music is reflected in his diverse career as both a conductor and a cellist, appearing on major concert hall stages across the globe.
When he is not gallivanting around the world with Manny Tuba, the WSO’s greatest spokesperson, Mr. Mark is either busy performing at children’s festivals across Canada, or making orchestras out of junk with kids, as part of Manitoba Arts Council’s Artists in the School Program. If he’s not doing that, he is most likely at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, where he has been an accompanist and teacher since 1989.
Earl’s musical philosophy is centred around the power of emotional connections. Every aspect of his concerts - from programming to performance - are fine-tuned to connect with both musicians and audiences on a personal level. Earl’s close affinity for the emotions of his audience has made him a soughtafter performer across the world, with concerts in Canada, the United States, China, and South Korea.

An interview with Sistema Teacher, John Baron
John Baron is in his seventh year teaching with Sistema Winnipeg. Working out of Elwick School, John instructs three bass students and conducts both the Beethoven and Mozart orchestras, teaching over 40 students each year. What have you found is the biggest impact of having a daily teacher within Sistema Winnipeg? Students need structure. Students need repetition. Students need consistency. All three of these things are in place when the students know that there will be the same teacher there every single day. It helps the students develop a routine and gives them something they can count on. I feel like it also helps me just as much as it helps the kids. Getting to teach them every day, I am able to develop relationships with the students and most importantly, trust. These are all difficult things to build if a teacher is only around a couple days in a week. When I'm teaching as many kids as I do, I need to have as many of them on my side as possible (haha).
Can you describe the musical growth you’ve witnessed in your students? I've seen a lot of students from
square one. The growth is incredible. It's hard to see in the thick of things sometimes but when I've taken a moment to step back and think about where these students have come from, it's pretty amazing. From how to hold a violin to running their own chamber groups and sight reading orchestral pieces ... that's the spectrum within the time I've been with Sistema Winnipeg.
What is your favourite part of teaching within Sistema Winnipeg? My favourite part of teaching within Sistema Winnipeg is getting to see students experience success. It doesn't matter in what way or the size of the success. The minute you see a lightbulb go on in their head, where they've connected the dots on a concept or they prove themselves wrong by doing something they thought they couldn't do, that's why I'm still with the program. Getting to see these students discover their love for music, its challenges and its rewards really makes the job worth it.
What are you most looking forward to for the future of Sistema? Sistema is a growing program. The students who started the first year it came to Winnipeg are now in high school. They travel from their respective schools to rehearse and more importantly, to mentor the younger students. I believe this is the future of Sistema Winnipeg; a mentorship based program where students are teaching other students. This new chapter for Sistema Winnipeg is very new and very exciting.
Sistema Winnipeg cannot exist without your help. Please donate to keep this important program going. You may support the annual operations or the newly established Sistema Endowment Fund.
